Alex Heart wakes up one morning to have her entire world turned upside down.
Announcing they are going on a trip without her father, Alex's mom swiftly takes Alex away from her home and the boy she has loved all her life, Nix.
With this sudden news of Alex leaving, Nix does something he has been wanting to do for years-- he kisses her. Realizing now is her chance with her crush across the street, Alex vows to tell Nix about her feelings when they return from their trip.
Only, this isn't a vacation. It turns out Alex is on the run with her mother. But she has no idea from who. Now, she learns that she is a magic being! Finding herself back in her hometown of Cliffhaven, the journey to discovering who she really is begins and also a romance with the boy, who is a man now.
But he has his own demons and he can't forgive himself for the man he became as he grieved her. But Alex refuses to accept that he isn't good for her. As they reconnect, Alex falls for an evil plan and her life is in danger. As her family tries to save her, secrets and truths are revealed and the happily ever after for so many seems like it may or may not be obtainable.
With heartbreak, mystery, and betrayal around every corner, Alex must fight for her life...and those she loves.
Mary Dean's writing is such a refreshing escape from reality. I adore the fast paced dialogue between Alex and Nix as they get to know each other again after being separated for years.
Family forgiveness is a key theme as is finding yourself. Alex's mother's love drives her to live a life on the road, running away from the people who may harm her. But now, Alex has to come to terms as to who she is, realizing she, and her family, have magical powers.
A love story at its core with a coming of age plot as a spine, this was a delightful beginning to The Cliffhaven Coven series!
Alex was taken away from her home by her mother as she was getting ready to start high school with her best friend Nix. Moving every six months and living under a fake name, the bad guys her mom was hiding her from find them. She runs and gets captured again to be saved by her dad, best friend and his family, who all believed she was dead. She finally learns why her mom tried to keep her hidden. Vincent is still after her. Somehow he manages to stay one step ahead until Alex is captured again. Can Nix and everyone save the woman he loves?
I enjoyed reading about Nix and Alex. It was well written. Has a good storyline. It has some mystery and twists and turns. Had me hooked from the first chapter. It was a heartfelt and touching story. I enjoyed all the characters. I look forward to the next book.
I dropped this book 20% in. It’s very clingy and the time line doesn’t make sense. I thought I could handle it since it’s only ~95 pages but I was wrong.
Writing was good but this book wasn’t for me props to the author as she does really well writing. Wish I would have read the description before I got this book.
