Ex On the Beach

Rate this book
I’m going to be starring in a movie with my ex-husband—a man who I am still desperately in love with.

A-list movie star and animal activist Kim Watterson has it all: a spectacular career, two amazing kids, and a growing animal sanctuary she manages in her spare time. Still, she’s better known for being half of Watterpless, a Hollywood super-couple who put Brangelina and Bennifer to shame—and whose divorce generated just as much gossip.

And that’s before the studio for the latest comic book adaptation she’s headlining announces a cross-over film featuring her character—where she’ll be playing the romantic lead opposite her ex-husband, Blake Pless.

Kim’s determined to do the film, even though she’s still in love with Blake, because the alternative is to let the studio replace her with a younger model. She’s sure she can keep her heart and her dignity intact—

But no plan survives contact with the enemy, especially when you’re filming with your ex on the beach.

Ex on the Beach is a full-length, standalone romantic comedy. It features R-rated sexual content and swearing, no cliff hanger, no cheating, and a swoon-worthy happily ever after.

Judging a book by its cover is one of my unfortunate prejudices, and if you judge this book by its cover you’d expect this to be light and fun romcom. But within its pages, you would find something much deeper than that. This is the story of a Hollywood couple who have been long divorced, when they are cast in a movie together they need to confront the truth of their split and their feelings for one another.

The thing I really love about this pair of authors is they write entirely relatable characters. Within a few pages you can put yourself right into the shoes of both main characters, even though they are quirky celebrities. We see the glamour of their lives but we also see beneath the facade where they have to deal with some serious mental health issues. I appreciated the delicacy with which this was handled.

As a child of divorce, I really valued the way that the two main characters took their children into account with all of their decisions. It’s nice to see a romcom with two characters who have their lives together as individuals and were looking for a healthy way to combine their lives.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book. All opinions above are my own.

Kim and Blake are two halves of an A-list movie star power couple whose divorce took the tabloids by storm. Years later, they've agreed to star in a movie together, and end up rekindling their relationship, which causes waves on set and with their pre-teen daughter.

One thing I particularly enjoyed about this book was that the blurb notes upfront that this is a rated-R romance with no cheating, no cliff-hanger, and an assured Happily-Ever-After. I don't normally enjoy divorcée romances or characters who cheat, but this one works because I was rooting for them to get back together and neither partner did anything particularly unsavory.

What surprised me about this book was that the rekindled romance isn't the ending of the book, it's the beginning. The bulk of the book deals with the aftermath of Kim and Blake's divorce and rehashing of their marriage, like issues of miscommunication and unhappiness, undiagnosed mental health issues, and the perils of parenting a sassy and rebellious pre-teen. The ending felt a bit rushed, but overall felt like a Hallmark movie in the making. While it's Book 11 in the Extra series, Ex on the Beach is a stand-alone romance in the same world as other characters from the Extra series. This was a great palate cleanser and I'll have to read some of the other books from the series soon!

5 stars for this beauty, loved the story, following two famous people who were once married, it delves into why the marriage broke down and this couple getting over that it does have a HEA, my favourite. It also has two children from the marriage one younger boy and a pre teens girl and the drama of having a pre teen, oh boy the joys of that, I remember it well with my own. There is humour but also the serious side of mental illness and being able to cope and move on with that.

I love the books in this series! This book was heartwrenching, funny and heartwarming. The characters were well developed. This was a second chance at love story.

Kim Watterson is divorced, an actress, a mother of two children - Ivy age 12 and Lucas age 7, and she suffers from OCD. She plays comic heroine Hemlock. She also runs an animal sanctuary at her ranch. She is still in love with him.

Blake Pless is divorced from Kim, an actor and is dyslexic. He plays comic hero Farpoint. He is still in love with her.

They are offered parts in a movie playing their comic characters. Their chemistry re-ignites during a kissing scene, they talk about their past and reunite. Their daughter is very against their reunion and acts out horribly. They go to therapy to try to work on their past issues so as not to repeat their failures. They get their HEA after a lot of chaos. Highly recommend.

Ex On A Beach by the dynamic Megan Walker and Janci Patterson has everything you want from your romantic comedy novel. A divorced couple still in love, laugh out loud scenes, heart tugging admissions of true feelings and flowing prose that puts you right in the middle of it all.

I am a huge fan of the authors' rom com series The Extra. This book is a stand alone novel with a few of their past characters making some cameo appearances.

Kim Watterson and Blake Pless were a super movie star couple back in the day. They even rated a couple name on social media: Watterpless.

They have now gone the way of Bradgelina and are divorced with two kids. Kim also runs an animal sanctuary.

When they are forced to work together in a big block buster comic book movie their worlds are turned upside down for our amusement and I love it.

What makes this rom com special are two elements. First is the very well researched and thought out addition of a main character's mental illness. The whole plot line is handled with pure honesty and heart. Second is the absolute love Kim and Blake have for their family. As in most rom coms there is a great deal of miscommunication and assumptions but there is always an underlying feeling of love and respect. I appreciate that the story is told without any real animosity toward one another.

Treat yourself to this very special unique
romantic comedy. We all need a little romance now and then

Ex on the Beach and When We Fell by Megan Walker and Janci Patterson was such a cute and different read than I am used to. I loved both the novella and the book!

5/5 stars for both!

When We Fell is a novella prequel just before Ex on the Beach, I highly recommend checking it out first. It is the story of how our two main characters Kim and Blake fell in love, and how that love fell apart. The prequel was so adorable, so much fun to read, and such a good intro!

Our characters Blake and Kim were two very unique characters. Kim seemed to be very uptight, had a rough time with words despite being an actress, and was the “strict parent”. Blake was loveable, outgoing, a natural actor, and the “fun parent”. Both were very different, and the definition of opposites attract.

The setting of filming a superhero movie honestly made it that much more incredible. Being able to see behind the sides, the comic con mentions, the fellow cast mates and the assitants was a treat. I really enjoyed the setting.

The plot was very slow moving, but it was easy to read and most of all, it was enjoyable. Both ladies writing styles form a cohesive storyline, I didn’t even notice that it was written by two separate people.

If you like cute romcoms, with some semi steamy sex scenes, I highly recommend this one! (Especially if you’re wanting to start reading them. This is a perfect intro to that genre!)

Trigger warnings:

This does deal with mental health, and the word rape is mentioned. It also has marijuana mentioned in it.

Disclaimer: I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sometimes a book takes you by surprise. I expected to read an excellent second chance love story, and I got that. I got so much more as well.

The main protagonists are a divorced couple, both Hollywood superstars, who find themselves working together on a movie. The inevitable sparks fly, and off we go with a good, sweet, love story. It is believable and compelling. Complications from family, professional, and social issues keep it interesting till the end.

There is a lot more. I cannot figure out a way to talk about it without revealing crucial plot points. So, spoilers below.

One of the things that lead to the dissolution of their marriage was an undiagnosed mental health issue. Now diagnosed this issue plays an important role in driving the story. It is clear a great deal of research of personal knowledge was involved. The descriptions and consequences are believable and treated with dignity. There is a clear subtext about the value of having the strength to seek help in life was both noted and appreciated. More so, the subtle way it was done made it more powerful.

I enjoyed this book more than I expected and now plan on reading more work by these authors, I had not heard of them before this, but they are on my watchlist now.

a second chance novel that’s is just too good to put down

Kim and Blake are back, six years after their divorce. They are cast in the same film, playing their super hero characters they got known for separately.

They are both nervous. The divorce broke them, and Kim has since learned a lot about herself and why things happened the way they did and is not the same person she was.

Blake just dated a whole slew of Kim-look-alike, never finding the same magic he felt when he was with Kim.

Working closely together forces them to acknowledge the past and the fact they still deeply love each other.

But there is also their children to think about, and what effect it will have on them should they give it another go.

I loved this book! The characters are so well-written, and the story so well researched. It was like reading my own feelings and more. The authors deal with the topic of mental health problems, relationship flaws and self-doubt in a brutally honest but still genuine and sensitive way. No skimming over the ugly, no bugging it up either. Just human.

Can’t wait to read the next one!

He's not just her comic book hero

Ex on the Beach is the eleventh book in The Extra series and is yet another funny but also emotional story by writing duo Janci Patterson and Megan Walker. This is a second chance at love and the Hollywood HEA ending with a divorced one name movie star couple. When Kim Watterson and Blake Pless are forced to work together on a big budget comic book movie, like the world doesn't have enough of those, things are about to get interesting between these two. You see, they never actually fell out of love with each other really and they also know each other really well and share a couple kids. So add a couple kids into the mix of the family drama and they have a lot at stake, not the least of which are their hearts, with a potential reigniting of their love.

In book 11, Ex On The Beach, we get to meet Kim and Blake. Divorced movie stars who share custody of their two kids. They each get offered a great movie part but there is one big catch- they have to star opposite each other again. Kim negotiates down to one kissing scene but when that scene happens...all bets are off!

We want to thank the incredibly talented authors Janci Patterson and Megan Walker for gifting us these books. I save their books for a day that I have completely open because I know that once I start reading one I WON’T BE ABLE TO STOP!!! Seriously! I read both of these books in the same day! They are sooo entertaining!!! You do not have to read these in order either. They are great stand alone books as well! I laughed, I swooned, I cried...

By chapter 2, I was already in serious like with Kim and Blake. I love how they deal with real-life problems as well as purely "Hollywood drama." Ivy brings lots of pre-teen attitude to the table, and Luke is simply a hoot!

And extra kudos for tackling a topic like mental health in a rom-com! I appreciate how the authors handle both the issues Kim and Blake are struggling with as well as the way the couple is seeking help dealing with them.
My heart is breaking for the two of them, but it makes me immensely happy that both of them are willing to be open and work on their own issues - and that they learn to recognize when they are falling into the patterns that made them split up in the first place.

Ex On The Beach is a fun read that I couldn't help but enjoy. As always Megan Walker and Janci Patterson have another great book to add to The Extra series. This book is basically a standalone with appearances from other and ends happily.

Take Two Hollywood stars who are divorced but both still loves the other. When a movie comes up in which they both will be starring in together, sparks fly on the set and off.

This second chance romance also deals with some mental illness issues. This is one thing I will commend these authors on. They deal with the problems in a realistic way...not judging but just stating what is. When these characters face their issues all ends well. A great romantic comedy that I recommend.

Another very interesting story in this series. The lack of real communication between a couple leads to all kinds of misunderstandings and unnecessary fights instead of searching for help they grow apart. It´s such an easy story to relate to, how many of us haven´t done that at least once in our lives. Living under the spotlight may also make these symptoms stronger and when you are surrounded by evil people it becomes insufferable, especially with a young teenager around! Again this is all so relatable! A most enjoyable reading!

"We're going to make this work."

For whatever reason, this book took me forever to get through, even though I loved it and the characters as much as every other Janci and Megan collaboration novel.

I just kept getting distracted by other books. 😉 What a great problem to have.

I love how Janci and Megan connect all their books in the series and then each book is like an overly extended epilogue of the previous book and one of the characters.

🥰

I truly appreciated the tender, raw, truths in this book about mental health, struggles with parenting l, and the complexes of working out promlein marriages and learning to trust and communicate.

This is a great book and brought tears my eyes.

An interesting look into what I assume is a somewhat accurate depiction of a celebrities life on set of a movie. The idea of a second chance romance with two popular actors now playing opposite each other on a major movie is such a great concept… I just couldn’t get into it. The mental health aspect of this book was a good idea, and I think some of the repetitiveness of the conversations between the two characters is to align with OCD. But it makes it a hard read to continue to go through the same conversations over and over again.
I also wish the troubles with the daughter had escalated earlier on as that was what drew my attention enough to actually finish this book.

Decent book with great characters

I liked this. The characters were well developed and I think the backstory integrated well. It was a little more maudlin than I typically want in romance novels, but I like the way the authors keep moving the series forward and weaving in moments from the previous books so we can revisit with the previous stories without rehashing them. It makes the characters feel more real and makes me as the reader more invested in the story.

I have read this whole series and they are fun, light reads. This book can be read as a stand alone, although there are some references to characters from the other books in the series, but I like getting an update on the previous characters. I really liked the characters in this book and would highly recommend this whole series!!!

I received this book as an ARC in return for my honest opinion. Sometimes you read a book that reminds you of why you fell in love with the person you did. This book is that. It was written so well that I laughed and cried. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Megan and Janci though. I loved everything about this book and I’m stoked that it’s part of a series because that means more books!

I love this book. I can relate to the way Kim's mind works since I also have those anxious thoughts and I never thought it would have anything to do with being OCD. I like the fact that the characters are more mature than the other books because it shows how love endures amidst the hardships and difficulties of a marriage.
