Tearmoon Empire Light Novel #3

Tearmoon Empire: Volume 3

Rate this book
Half a year has passed since the Remno revolution ended. Spring has rolled around again, bringing with it what Mia considers to be one of the most important occasions of the year — spring break. Freed from the duties of school and station, she’s ready to seize the day! By which she means, of course, do absolutely nothing productive and lounge around in bed all day.

Her indolent plans are cut short, however, when her own granddaughter, Bel, is whisked backwards through time and deposited in front of her. Just when she thought she was finally done with worrying about the guillotine, she learns of the grisly future awaiting her, in which a war of succession rends the empire in two. Mia herself has been killed by poison, and Bel narrowly avoided execution by leaping through time.

As if that wasn’t enough, she discovers that this terrible chain of events can be traced back to Rafina’s tragic transformation into a dictator. Altering the course of history will, of all things, require her to defeat Rafina in the upcoming election for student council president!

Underprepared, polling abysmally, and trailed by a granddaughter who inherited all her, erm, Mia-est bits, she once again finds herself at a historical turning point... without the faintest clue of what she's supposed to do!

The authorial snark is on point in this volume, which is much closer to the fun of the first book. The fact that everyone is seeing Mia through their own assumptions instead of for who she is is both very funny and quite possibly the most realistic part of a fantasy novel about redoing doomed lives. Bel is largely there just for window-dressing (the exception being the story about Dion at the end), but it's looking like that'll change in the next book.

The third volume of Tearmoon Empire continues to maintain the fun and adventurous tone of the story. While Mia has successfully avoided the guillotine, she's now facing a new possible future of herself dying to poison while the entire world is thrown into chaos. Since the bloody diary has vanished, she receives new guidance in the form of Miabel, her granddaughter who traveled back in time. That being said, Miabel actually plays very little role in altering the path leading to the bleak future. At least in this volume. Miabel is mainly there to be a lovable little sister role for Mia, only going through her memories of the future every now and then.

After the trip to Remno in the previous book, this volume marks Mia's return to the academy and focuses on the student council presidential election. I like how not only this event is directly tied to the alternate future Miabel came from, but also fleshes Rafina out nicely. Her devoted and religious nature can easily evolve into something sinister, which no one would ever see coming until it's too late. Due to her personality and social standing, she's actually a very lonely person who needs a friend she can trust… and this book gives her one. There's plenty of character development, and the plot moves along nicely even if the story takes place in Saint-Noel Academy again. You could say this is the start of a new story arc, which I think is done pretty nicely.

Despite the light-hearted nature of the book, however, there's a short story about Dion in the alternate future that is rather heartbreaking. Miabel really likes him, and for a very good reason. Up until the end, Dion knows that he's a soldier who will meet his end in the battlefield, yet it doesn't stop him from imagining a more peaceful end for himself. While I have no doubt Mia will avoid that future, I can't help but hope that by doing so, she will also guide Dion to a better ending. Even though the main appeal of the series is the fun it delivers, I really like how the writing really conveys that bittersweet feeling from these "bad endings" too.

Based on how this book ends, it's heavily hinted that the academy Mia is building in Tearmoon is facing some problems and that we're going to see it in the next volume.

Having finished the anime season, and the anime season basically covering books 1 and 2, i wanted to go into uncharted territory in book 3. And, gotta say, i still had fun with it. I don't think 3 was as good as 1 or 2, but, it was still very good.

So essentially, after she lost her magical diary in the previous volume, she now doesn't have any way to look into the future to avoid bad things. However, that is until her granddaughter Bel from the future shows up and basically tells her that she gets poisoned when she's a grandma and the whole country goes to hell. So it's up to her once again to change her future.

This book doesn't have as many adorable "accidentally making amazing decisions" as books 1 or 2 so that left me feeling a little lacking, and i wasn't completely sold on the "Student council election" between her and Rafina. One thing that i found very interesting about this book was, for bringing a granddaughter to the past, they sure didn't utilize her a lot. i was actually kind of shocked about that. not that i'm saying it's a bad thing because Bel's the kind of character that can get annoying in large doses, but i'm actually surprised they held back as much as they did.

I would say for her introduction book, she was only in about 1/4 of it. Which surprised me quite a bit.

Overall, this volume still had a lot of the charm, wit, and silliness the other two had, and we're learning about a new threat coming to the kingdom, but it was just a LITTLE lacking from the previous volumes. Still liked it a lot and want to see where this is going absolutely, but it's not a perfect 5 like the others were. Still though, very good and I still think Mia is amazing.

Solid 4 out of 5.

The story continues much like volume 1 and 2, now with a bit of a more mundane problem of her granddaughter appearing out of nowhere and telling her Mia needs to become the next school president instead of Rafina. Mia really does not want to antagonize Rafina, but she has no choice, or she will die a horrible death. Misunderstandings abound. Just like volume 1 and 2, the story is funny, and there is some character growth (however small). I just not entirely sure about the delivery of the warning, changing from the diary into her granddaughter. It is stretching my suspension a bit even if the character herself is entertaining. I am also not a big fan of the trope. The whole misunderstandings lead to great things is funny, should not come as a surprise 3 volumes in, but it is a tad extreme and is losing a bit of its shine to be honest. All in all, an entertaining read, but it is not drawing me in as much as the earlier volumes.

The writing and translation are functional, but this doesn't feel like a complete novel. In spite of assurances that bad things will happen if Mia loses the election, there are no real stakes, and the main new character, Mia's time-traveling daughter Miabel, doesn't really *do* anything. At the end of the novel, the threat that caused everything to go south in Miabel's future isn't actually resolved, and everyone's on a carriage going to check out a seemingly unrelated problem somewhere else, which was introduced in the last chapter.

I do like how nice these books have been so far. There's a whole cottage industry of deeply unpleasant webnovels and comics with the same basic plot of "person is betrayed, dies, is reborn, and wreaks bloody vengeance on everyone." In any of those, a bit character like Sapphias would meet a ghastly fate for the crime of being a shitty teen while the audience (presumably) cheers his downfall; the humanism of this series ensures that nothing of the sort occurs here.

Like the calm before the storm

As like previous volumes, this is a story filled with extreme case of misunderstandings in a very good and comical way possible. It is quite clear that the author try to start another world building that is quite separate to the previous books, which is quite vanilla compared to the previous arc. This whole volume might feels a bit like a filler story but you know something big is coming. Most of the names are gathered and really looking forward to the next part!

Another great addition!

This feels like a hard divergence from the last book's serious tone. Despite the subject matter itself being pretty serious, the book remains lighthearted until the very end, when we start to see foreshadowing left, right, and center. For those who hate ending on an incomplete note, this book very much does. In my opinion it comes off as part one of a larger volume.

Despite my criticisms, I did love the introduction of Miabel!! And I look forward to the next book.

Mia being Mia...and the Empire Will Fall?

Mia makes the big mistake of seeking another guide like her bloodied diary did upon her reawakening. This one, talks and walks and looks a lot like...Mia. A great volume launching Part 2 of the Tearmoon Sage. You will laugh and even cry, and turn the page rapidly as you follow the Princess who always fails upward on her march to destiny.

Seriously, few characters are as funny to follow as dear Mia...I mean, Saint Mia? Wait, really? How far can she fail upwards?

Gal who's only seen Sailor Moon R: Getting a lot of Sailor Moon R vibes from this.

On a seriouser note, granddaughter from the future played a lesser role in story than I was expecting. Way less secret keeping shenanigans

too slow - skip or skim to next volume
Mia seems to go out of way to avoid reducing her issues - she becomes lazy but not lazy enough to use her cheat tool to make things safer for herself. Thankfully the next volumes are better

Seems like a good series and I'm sure a lot of people enjoy it, but wasn't quite for me. I wouldn't mind reading a cliff notes of the story though.

Sometimes you're emotionally exhausted and just have to read 11 volumes of a selfish princess learning to be a better person resulting in increasingly funny and wholesome events🤷🏻‍♀️

It's amazing how Mia went from being luckless in her first live-through to having plot armor luck in this new life.

This series is really good.

3 very good books into this series, and I'm bummed because the 4th book is 3 and a half months away!
The introduction of Bel to the stories was a good idea. I only wonder if she's going to have to back go get original timeline at some point, or if she's here to stay?

What can I say about Volume 3 that I haven't said about the previous Volumes? The characters we already know and love continue to be endearing and the misunderstandings continue to be ridiculous but PERFECT in their execution. Every character that is added to the plot or developed from side character to slightly more important prove to be just what the story needed, as they have in the previous updates. Volume 3 never fails to deliver what the reader wants (wants gained from the expectations of previous volumes). The writing is great, masterfully funny and sad when the situation calls for it. And yet, even though this Volume does everything the previous Volumes did, I'd go so far as to say it's better than the previous ones.

For example I LOVE how the relationships between characters are progressing. You'd think with all the misunderstandings surrounding Mia that the relationships wouldn't progress in a positive way, but they DO and it's UNDERSTANDABLE! For example Anne discovering Mia's not good at studying and instead of Mia's loyal maid/best friend doubting her, she works hard to help Mia improve. Or Sion thinking Mia is gullible, but not letting that overshadow her accomplishments and thinking it's sweet that Mia is not as perfect as he thinks her to be (of course, we as the reader know she isn't perfect at all, but that's not here nor there).

I think Volume 3 continues to do everything the previous Volumes did great, but also adds more to the story. This world Mia lives in is expanding and so is her social circles and the amount of people she has to reluctantly/unknowingly save. I can't wait for the next Volume and hope we get more relationship and plot progress as we did in this Volume.

P.S. I think Mia-syndrome might be contagious. I read that Mia goes to bed at 8 and my first thought was: WHAT A ROLE MODEL!

This was a great volume, and it took the series in several very interesting directions. I'm really curious to see how the world expands and thing shift due to This volume was very funny, with well done character development and interesting plot developments. There were also a couple of great flashbacks to alternate timelines in between the events of main plot. I always appreciate the poignancy those add to the story! At any rate, I greatly enjoyed this volume and would definitely recommend it if you at all enjoyed the first two. 5 stars!

Reread February 20th-May 13th, 2022 (in Japanese)
This volume of the series was markedly easier than the first two - it felt way more like extensive than intensive reading to me, which was nice, Japanese-wise. Content-wise, this is one of my favorites of the entire series (my favorite being volume 7, which blows the usual awesomeness out of the water), and the humor is as on point as the twists, turns, and misunderstandings of the plot. In all seriousness, though, I tell everyone I know about this series - it's that good. 5 stars!
