Autorii au de transmis un mesaj simplu (chit că o fac în 400 de pagini): echilibrul global al puterii militare se schimbă și SUA pierd din dominație; tehnologia schimbă caracterul războiului, oferind avantaje adversarilor; NATO trebuie reformat pentru o apărarea colectivă și descurajare mai eficiente, pentru întreg palierul de amenințări, în toate spațiile de luptă; și, cel mai important, Europa trebuie să fie conștientă că SUA nu vor fi mereu disponibile să sară în ajutor, mai ales dacă va fi nevoită să lupte în mai multe locuri de pe glob în același timp, astfel că europenii trebuie să investească masiv în apărare, în tehnologii de ultimă generație și în armament, ca să nu fie prinși pe picior greșit și să poată face față unui război. Întreaga carte e o încercare de a trezi europenii din modul în care s-au raportat la apărare și la (im)posibilitatea unui război în Europa (cartea este scrisă înainte de războiul început de ruși în Ucraina), fiind comozi și mereu sub umbrela de securitate a NATO (adică a americanilor, spun autorii). Autorii încep cu un scenariu pesimist pentru două războaie, începute simultan de Rusia și China, prin 2029-2030, în care europenii și NATO, nepregătiți, neinvestind în apărare, în eficientizarea comenzii și controlului, în tehnologiile de ultimă generație, și neavându-i alături pe americani, care trebuie să lupte și cu China în același timp, sunt învinși foarte rapid. La final, apare și scenariul pozitiv, tot în 2029-2030 europenii sunt pregătiți să facă față Rusiei (China și-a normalizat relațiile cu SUA între timp, astfel că americanii nu trebuie să se mai împartă în două direcții, deci cumva și SUA au ceva de făcut, nu doar Europa) și Putin este nevoit să dea înapoi și să-și recunoască greșeala de calcul strategic. Între cele două scenarii: nouă capitole mari și late care ne spun că Europa nu investește destul în apărare, în achiziții de armament, în cercetare și dezvoltare, în adaptarea NATO pentru războiul prezentului.

Toate cele 400 de pagini puteau fi rezumate într-un policy paper sau într-un dosar de recomandări, pentru că oricum cartea nu este pentru un cititor de rând, având în mod evident un public țintă mult mai restrâns. Multe idei sunt reluate la nesfârșit, limbajul este mult prea tehnic. Autorii, în mod evident, sunt militari, nu scriitori. Și nimic nu este mai enervant decât atunci când fiecare al doilea capitol sau subcapitol începe cu o întrebare (semi)retorică formată dintr-un cuvânt/două sau când se încheie așa.

An example when the authors, firstly, with all the accurate information can come up with flawed conclusions and, secondly, utilize the new developing situation to outline old, already numerously voiced dated opinions. E.g., COVID-19 pandemic impact on the future developments was exaggerated, totally flawed forecast WRT the characteristics of a future war (probability of the something like Russian unprovoked large scale invasion in Ukraine is not even in the margins), the role of the US in the future European security architecture, etc.

Pvz., COVID-19 pandemijos poveikis ateičiai gerai pervertintas, visai neadekvatus būsimų karų bruožų prognozavimas (apie kažką pnašaus į Rusijos neišprovokuotos didelio masto invazijos į Ukrainą tikimybę net neužsimenama), JAV vaidmuo būsimojoje Europos saugumo architektūroje, ir t.t., ir pan.

I expect these types of books to have a biased perspective, but for me, this one gave a balanced perspective on the very near future. Scary but also eye-opening, a very interesting book aimed at both specialists in the field as well as the general public interested in a better understanding of the world we live in

Very good analysis of the current situation in Europe. Considering that this was written shortly before Putin‘s attack on Ukraine, it contains a remarkable estimation of that dictator‘s ambitions.

Future War is a 360-degree analysis of the state of European defense. The three US-american authors take a cold, hard look at the troubling status quo and make some suggestions as to how we could improve the situation.

The structure of the book is very interesting if somewhat sensationalist. It opens with a war scenario in which Europe continues to neglect its defense in the years to come. China and Russia coordinate attacks against NATO and unleash a hyperware at various places around the world and across the complete tactical spectrum. The scenario ends in the defeat of the western allies.

Over the next 300 pages, they elaborate on the threats Europe faces and its shortcomings as well as ways to address them. Unfortunately, the authors don‘t manage to formulate a concise „thread“ that a laymen reader can follow besides „Russia and China bad but strong, Europe good but weak and naive, US good and strong“. While I agree with many of their suggestions and think Europe has been dangerously neglecting its defense, the authors arguing in favor of European interventionism abroad reflects their own „goggles“ as Americans and not objective judgment. Also, the authors focus almost exclusively on the issues, make barely any concrete recommendations and don‘t manage to show how they can be implemented in the European political landscape.

The book ends with a scenario in which corrective measures habe been taken before the attack takes place, and NATO comes out victorious. 

I recommend every European to read this book or similar ones to understand that we need to take defense more seriously. While the Russian attack on Ukraine has changed some minds and policies on the continent, whether it will result in a long-term strategic improvement remains to be seen.

Gli autori Tentano di descrivere le sorti della difesa dell’Europa, sulla scorta dello schock sistemico causato dalla pandemia da Covid-19. Strutturato in maniera originale, ovvero con due scenari, uno introduttivo e catastrofico ed uno finale e salvifico. Nel primo scenario l’Europa non sa reagire ad una guerra convenzionale poiché impreparata e troppo dipendente dagli Stati Uniti. Nel secondo l’Europa reagisce e riesce a superare con successo la prossima guerra. Passando attraverso l’analisi delle conseguenze del Covid 19, sulla struttura difensiva europea, attraverso l’analisi di quelle che gli autori ritengono essere le principali minacce per il vecchio continente, il tema ricorrente (troppo spesso!) è: non date per garantito il supporto americano. Del libro Salvo alcuni dettagli tecnici descritti con grande profondità delle strutture militari russe e cinesi. Salvo anche l’analisi sullo stato di salute della NATO, la descrizione storica della sua evoluzione. Accetto il rimprovero generale e in gran parte giusto, relativamente allo stato delle forze armate dei pesi europei. Tuttavia, l’assunto di partenza rende il libro inaccettabile, specie se chi scrive e’ gente del calibro dei tre autori: l’Europa (senza mai chiarire cosa gli autori intendano con il concetto di Europa…il continente? L’unione Europea?) è interpretata nel testo come un attore geopolitico unitario. Grave scivolone. Al termine della lettura, mi sono chiesto un paio di domande, una sarcastica una provocatoria. La prima: gli autori hanno mai trascorso del tempo e magari viaggiato per l’Europa? La seconda: siamo tutti certi che la ricetta proposta sia davvero qualcosa di desiderabile per la strategia USA? In altri termini, cosa accadrebbe se l’Europa (senza definizione…) diventasse davvero un attore geopolitico unitario?

The central message of this book is compelling: European countries need to spend and innovate far more on their own defense. The problem is that the book is awfully repetitive and redundant. They could have done a better job organizing and editing it so that the same points are not made repeatedly.

Es sieht schlecht aus und das wissen wir schon lange. Die Zukunftsprognose des Buches hat sich auf etwas andere Weise mittlerweile selbst eingeholt und bestätigt sich jeden Tag etwas mehr. Nur die Umsetzung des Handlungsbedarfs lässt zu wünschen übrig...

well writen and presents interesting scenarios. However it is outdated as it was writen before the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. the world is a very different one today, than the one presented in the book.
