Beneath New York City’s streets, the Runners’ Syndicate lures the unwary to run for cash in virtual reality environments, satisfying everyone’s desires.
One month into his contract, Victor falls for fellow Runner, Victoria. He needs money but can’t recall why, and Victoria wants a new life of financial freedom. They support each other through their trials, but people from Victor’s past bring chaos to their harmony.
Capricious Players control the virtual worlds to assist or torment the Runners. Meanwhile, the Syndicate’s imperious avatar presides over every move and offers temptations to lure the Runners into transgressions.
As his life unravels, Victor witnesses the horrifying ordeal of a roommate's Harvesting. With no obvious means of escape, can he and Victoria outsmart the avatar to avoid the ultimate fate?
Mike has been punctual all his life, but came late to writing. However, those much delayed concepts and ideas have spilled from his mind to the page, and the first of those is told in Runners: Sins and Lovers, the opening book from the Tales of the Runner's Syndicate series.
If you have a strong moral compass and clearly know right from wrong, or alternatively want to try everything before you die no matter the consequences, you might end up in the Runners' Syndicate taking your chances.
Very enjoyable read with runners competing in a virtual world. As time goes on the reader realises that all is not as it seems in the real world though and a far darker force is at play. Tantalising hints through-out had me guessing at what was really happening making this a page turner. Excellent first book - look forward to seeing where the story will go in book 2.
I split my reading between old favourites and new authors, you don't get any newer than a debut novel so I thought I'd give it a go.
Great storyline with a slowly unfolding dark plot which keeps you turning the pages to the end. Well worth a go if you are temped by something out of the ordinary.
This novel successfully crosses genres and I would say it's a must for lovers of sci-fi. It is a fast paced but still very thought-provoking read. I thoroughly enjoyed every word.
Runners is a brilliant read. A real page turner, the twists and turns of the plot had me hooked and I was fully invested in each character’s point of view. I really enjoyed the word games and discovering the dark secrets of the Syndicate through each of Cyndi’s chapters. Looking forward to seeing where this series takes us next!
