I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this volume.
I guess I just wasn't prepared for this to be the end of this part of the story if you know what I mean?

description

I did really love the explanations we got as to who/what Machinekind was, and why they originally attacked everyone.

Tim's role in the way everything played out was less satisfying to me, but still not badly done.

description

And while I wasn't exactly prepared for this to be over with, I was thrilled to learn that this wasn't the end.

In this volume we get a backstory that sheds some light on the origin of sentient inorganic beings in the universe and just who--of humans and robots--created whom! A long six volume series of arcs completed, in one surprising way, with some smaller arcs completed in pretty satisfying ways, such as those of Telsa, Andy and Effie, Driller. . . . So the final confrontation between organic and inorganic life—The Descenders—is here at last, though it is mostly a series of resolutions that take place in talk, not a lot of action, no big war.

We find that the conclusion of The Descenders is just a part of a larger story that will continue with. . . . Ascenders! In many ways this is a low key, unsurprising ending to the series, a 3 star read, but I will rate this 4 stars because it features Dustin Nguyen’s amazing art, which is the highlight of the series, for sure.

Extraordinary artwork in aquarelle as always compelling, gripping story and the conclusion to the first cycle in the Descender, Vol. 6: The Machine War series.

Our favorite characters are finally teamed up on this final showdown between AI and humans. The story is literally explosive and very satisfying with stupendous artwork as always. Fortunately, the story continues in the new cycle Ascender, Vol. 1: The Haunted Galaxy

So this was the last volume. At least of Descender. And what an epic ending. I didn't actually expect a resetting of the clocks but then again, how else could this story end?

Tim-21 is with the old professor and his ancestor but when they contact the machines that sent the harvesters, the response is not what they expected. Let's just say that the guys aren't exactly pacifists.
Driller is still around somewhere with that weird being he encountered on the planet that had "magic" and we finally find out a little more about what that means.
Meanwhile, Nagoki also reveals why he wants/needs Tim-21, the Gnishians show how truly mad they are, and Tim-21 himself comes into his own (sort of) by making a fateful choice.

To say more is to ruin a wonderful ending to a great little comicbook series that I enjoyed tremendously. Apparently, the author didn't intend for it to end this way initially but then changed his mind. Organic progression so to speak. We'll never know what the original ending was, I guess, but this one is really good as anyone can choose for themselves if they want to stop here or continue when they publish the follow-up story that will be called Ascender.

Once again, the art stole the show. This time not only when showing relatively familiar set-ups

but also with the truly stunning colours used to convey just how epic the harvesters are and what's happening in the galaxy.

True, this volume wasn't as strong as some previous onces but I still loved it.

That’s it. It’s over. I’m sad.

The last volume in this beautiful series begins with some waywaybackstory.

description

We learn some interesting things about Machinekind and the Harvesters. About the Descenders. Did these machines make us? Good question, my friend. Interesting.

Then we go back to the conflict at hand. Quite exciting. It’s war after all. And our heroes play a big role in it all.

description

The tactics of the Descenders are somewhat questionable, though. There‘s either a fairly big plot hole here, or some serious lack in communication skills on their part.

Anyways, in the last two issues things come to a head and there’s also still a bit of time for some deep feelings.

description

And the big reunion everybody was waiting for. Awww!

And then that ending. Wow! I’m sad. And so ready for Ascender now. Yes, it doesn’t end here. Because it can’t. And still it does. That’s it (for Descender). I’m sad. But I loved it.

This was a buddy-read with Cathy. A quite spontaneous one. Okay, to be honest, I kinda stalked her, saw that she was reading the book and then just began reading it myself. Buddy-stalker pro level. Muahahaha! Okay, now you think I’m some kind of sicko. Well…

I'm caught between loving it and hating certain aspects of this.

It's the END of the comic but not the ongoing story. The end of Descender, however, was rather... abrupt.

For the most part, this volume did a great job with more buildup and continuing action, but RIGHT when we were about to have the reckoning... it happened. Just. Next, please! Sigh.

Well, at the very least, I can say the end did one thing very well. It made me want to pick up the new series continuing 10 years down the line. Ascender. I can't have things end like this, you know?

All in all, the comic has its strong point and weak points. Mostly, however, the strong far outweigh the bad. I can't say this is the end-all to comics, but I did enjoy myself.

We finally get some answers about The Descenders, as the first 2 issues are kind of a history that indirectly explained what happened with the Harvestors. Then all of these myriad of plots head to the same place as war boils over. I have to say I didn't see things unfolding the way they did. And it turns out that Descender is just the first arc in a larger story. Now on to Ascender which comes out in a few weeks.

I absolutely loved volume 1 of Descender. It was my first dive into Lemire's work and in meantime he has become one of my favourite comicbook writers. While series series maintained quality it never reached same height as volume one or as some other Lemire's work but I'm glad it ends on high note. I loved the twist and unexpected ending. It gives even stronger flavour to what is already pretty unusual series and I liked setup for the new series. Ascender in now one my most anticipated series.

Another fantastic volume which reminded me why I consider Descender to be one of my favourite graphic novel series. There were so many exciting plot development in this one, including some important backstory reveals. And what a bold ending! I highly recommend this science fiction series!

Decender is DONE~!

Man oh man there's so many fucked up moments here. You thought this would end happy? You're reading the wrong book. This series is filled with misery and when the Decenders decide they've had enough of mankind, well...we're pretty much fucked. Years and years of being chased and killed they strike back but who will survive the final blow to humans?

This is a emotional payoff in a lot of aspects. Tons of major characters die, new ones live in a world I'm excited to explore, and consequences to earlier actions display in some fucked up moments here. I really loved the ending and so excited to read its sequel Acender.

A 5 out of 5.

All the pieces are in place, and the war is about to begin. With Tim-21 and his friends trapped in the middle, only the littlest robot can save the day and stop humanity from being wiped from the universe. But a far more sinister, far more far-reaching plot is also coming to fruition as The Descenders finally make themselves known.

It's all been leading to this - it's cliché, but it's true. Jeff Lemire's intergalactic epic has been building and building to this final confrontation between organic life and machines, which is a confrontation that most definitely feels like we've gotten to this place together. However, there's something off about this final arc which is evident from the first issue - we spend almost two issues without even seeing our main characters, as Lemire sets up a new storyline in the background that gives us the background of everything that's been going on.

In other stories, this isn't a bad thing. But it all feels like it comes out of nowhere with Descender - we've always known that the Harvesters weren't acting alone, but building up this entire narrative about the Descenders and their goals in an issue and a half feels like an info dump rather than an actual plot development.

What makes it worse is that what happens next was likely going to happen whether Tim and his friends were there or not. They have almost no agency in the final conclusion of the story, which cheapens everything they've done to get here. And then we get a teaser at the end that sets up Lemire and Nguyen's new series, Ascender, set ten years later. It's almost like a bait and switch, and that's almost never a good narrative device to use.

It's as if Descender was gearing up for a big finale, only for the curtain to be drawn back on an even larger story, which would be fine if there was even a slight inclination that this might be what was going to happen. It's disappointing, in all honesty, and I don't like having to say that.

There are good things going on here as well though - some characters arcs come to a nice ending, like Telsa, and Andy & Effie, while Driller's companion finally seems to make sense in context. Nguyen's art remains wonderful as ever, and his use of white space instead of traditional panels always impresses.

Descender's ending is flawed in many ways, and it's a shame about that. Hopefully Ascender can justify derailing said ending - but it'll have a lot of work to do.

Read these as single issues. A little disappointed with the ending. I understand that this wasnt the intended ending as the story changed as it progressed. Looking forward to 2019 with what this team brings. Hopefully it builds on this amazing world they've created.

The beginning of this last volume starts with major backstory. We find out, how the humans discovered the tech to start building bots, drones et cetera.

Switching back to the present day, the plot does not fully make sense to me. Why did machinekind warn humans ten years ago, but then not follow through? That‘s a fairly big plot hole right there. Regardless, it was a good volume.

I liked the ending. Was it a great ending? Did the story develop in a satisfying way? I am not actually sure. It all worked, loose ends were tied, there was suspense and excitement and sorrow, it definitely had its moments...

Excellent art.

P.S.: Did anyone else feel the reawakening of the Force?

Se é bom ter respostas, a sua execução também pode diminuir a qualidade global pela natureza das mesmas. E nem a melhor execução artística e a promessa de spin-off aliviam o sentimento de incumprimento parcial.

One of my many projects for 2024 is finally finishing series I let fall into limbo. Six years ago, I set this one aside, noting for volume five, "I should only read this series when it is completed because I find these middle volumes to be filled with so much thumb twiddling." And the creative team had just announced there was going to be a whole sequel series called Ascender, which I now see wrapped up three years ago, so let's plow on through to the end of this sci-fi saga of man vs. machine . . . or man embracing machine . . . or machine forgiving man . . . or whatever the hell it is.

It didn't take me long to get back up to speed for the series. Grand Moff Tarkin has a new Death Star ready, but he needs Luke Skywalker to be the pilot so he's sent his stormtroopers to get him. But the emperor, the droids, the Jedi, and Han Solo are all angry about it and converge for a big fight.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are now over. Onto Return of the Jedi!

Descender has never really disappointed me. With this final volume, it proves once again why it's one of the best graphic novel series to have ever been written and illustrated, but beyond that, told and painted, because Descender is not your average comic series.

The great climax that I have been yearning and dreading is finally upon us, and it's both explosive and emotional. But this destruction births a new world, and a new hope. Unlike the sci-fi world of robots and technology, we are entering a new fantastical era of magic. Hats off to Lemire and Nguyen for being able to pivot the series like this and changing things up.

So with that, I bid farewell to Descender. Bring on Ascender!

What a great series!!!

Admittedly after 6 volumes it's kind of lost it's 'wow' factor, but hey this is still a damn good story, and I am highly anticipating Ascenders, which will be hitting the shelves in tpb sometime this year.

At last the origins of the harvester/hrmmns first interactions are explained, and ya as it turns out the first attack ten years prior to volume 1 was just a warm up. Most things are resolved, but the ending is kind of devastating. I was sad to see it all go down like that, but there is still hope in the galaxy

Mannnnn that was so epic! I love this series so much!
This wasn't as gut-punchy as some past volumes, but still hit the feels and was an insane conclusion.

Side Bar: so hyped that there is going to be a sequel series, Ascender. What?! I'm so excited, and the first issue comes out in a couple of weeks, I had no idea!

This series didn't do much for me. There was always one issue per volume that I enjoyed more, and I loved Driller. I didn't really care what happened to any of the other characters. I'd give the series as a whole 2.5 stars. Not my thing.

Wow, what a conclusion. I absolutely loved this series overall and cannot wait for the sequel, Ascender to start! Jeff Lemire has definitely become one of my favorite comic writers of all time (I loved Sweet Tooth!) and Dustin Nguyen's watercolor-like art style brought the sci-fi elements to life super well and made the emotional beats pack an extra punch. All the stars to this space opera!
