Geen idee of ik dit boek écht heb uitgelezen. Dat doet er ook niet toe. Ik las af en aan dit boek tijdens mijn lunch, elke keer een willekeurig lemma. En het was heerlijk. Geschiedenis is voor mij, samen met natuurkunde, het domein waarin ik héél even dénk de wereld te begrijpen. Oh, zat het zo met Carthago. Oh, zat het zo met het Habsburgse rijk. Oh, zat het zo met het communisme. Oh, zat het zo met de verspreiding van alle volken. Fijne kaarten erbij, leuke foto's, alles.

Nu, ruim een jaar later (dit boek bleef maar op currently reading staan, maar het is gewoon uit, heb ik besloten), weet ik er natuurlijk allegans niets meer van. God, was ik maar in staat om dit soort kennis ergens in te integreren zodat ik ook daadwerkelijk zou onthouden wie de magna carta had verzonnen (en überhaupt bij welk koninkrijk (Engeland?) dat hoorde), of hoe het confucianisme opkwam in China (klopt dit?), of waarom het Griekse rijk in elkaar is gestort, of hoe de Turken bij de poorten van Wenen gestopt zijn. Ik weet het niet meer.

Ik weet van dit boek alleen nog maar dat de wereldgeschiedenis een absoluut fascinerend fenomeen is wat ik nog vaak vol verbazing hoop te vernemen. En wat ook kan, omdat ik elke keer weer vergeet hoe het ook alweer in elkaar zat. Dit boek helpt daarbij, op dezelfde manier dat A Short History of Nearly Everything dat doet voor, nouja, alles. Heerlijk dus.

Bought this at our library's biannual book sale for $2, and it's definitely one of the year's best bargains. Combining world history and maps (two of my nerd passions), this is an excellent addition to my general reference bookshelf. Yay!

The original title of this book is Atlas of World History.
I'm very happy I bought this. It won't tell you anything you haven’t heard before if you read about history a lot, but it gives a synthesis of a wide range of cultures, significant people and events. Instead of focusing only on European and American history, and only mentioning Africa, South-America, Asia and Oceania when they’re being colonized, the book covers all these continents, various cultures on them. I also liked that Zheng He’s travels were discussed.
If there’s a history-geek child in your family, you’d probably make him/her very happy with this book.

Voor iemand die weinig kennis heeft van geschiedenis (le me) is dit een zeer goed en vrij allesomvattend boek.

Uiteraard kan men niet zeer diep ingaan op alle onderwerpen maar het geeft een zeer grondige samenvatting en het smaakt naar meer.

Vooral de wereldoorlogen en de tijdsperiode vanaf pakweg de middeleeuwen interesseren me, voornamelijk Europa en Amerika.

Ingedeeld in tijdperken. Op zich goed geschreven. Soms iets te simplistisch, maar daar ontkom je misschien niet aan voor ern overzicht. Wel veel herhaling in alinea’s, alsof elke alunea op zichzelf moet kunnen worden gelezen wat een beetje zot is omdat de hoifdstukken zelf al heel behapbaar zijn.

Als geschiedenis leerkracht heb ik het boek vaak gebruikt om lessen voor te bereiden. De beknopte samenvattingen van historische gebeurtenissen, kaarten, afbeeldingen en zelfs cijfergegevens zijn zeer mooi weergegeven en goed inzetbaar in geschiedenislessen.

I bought this book with the hopes of filling out my world history in a very general way and because I really like looking at maps. I was, unfortunately, disappointed. Most of what was written in this book is in fact so general, in fact, that it only gave me a gist of certain regions of the world and certain parts of history. It is mostly Euro-centric, especially towards the end, and everything is explained in rather boring language. And, on top of that, the maps are horrible! Many times important features aren't labeled, the color markings are so similar that it's difficult to tell them apart, or there just aren't enough of them. For a book titled "Atlas of World History," one would assume there would be a ton of maps. Not here though...

Das Buch versucht die Weltgeschichte von den ersten Großreichen bis heute in einem Band darzustellen - dazu noch mit etlichen Karten.

Dies ist in einigen Bereichen recht gut gelungen, in denen die maßgeblichen Ereignisse und Personen knapp, aber gut dargestellt wurden.

In vielen Bereichen aber wirkte sich der knappe Platz doch sehr ungünstig aus, und manches wurde arg verkürzt dargestellt. Manches wurde auch ausgelassen - man kann darüber streiten, ob das wichtig wäre oder nicht.

Hinzu kommt eine erkleckliche Anzahl von Druckfehlern, leider auch des öfteren bei den Jahreszahlen, was doch manchmal Irritationen auslöst.

Mein Fazit also: Als knappe Übersicht zu gebrauchen (viele der Karten sind recht gut gemacht und geben gute Überblicke), aber halt teilweise etwas zu knapp.

It's a fairly comprehensive yet summarized glance at history with some pretty cool maps included. One thing that irked me every now and then, however, was the constant jumping back and forth from British date stamps to American date-stamps whenever giving any sort of historic (day) event. Not enough to make me frown upon the book in any way, just more of a simple nuisance that I vaguely grew aware of as I read on and sort of made me chuckle. I guess Editing didn't catch that one.

This is an exceptional introduction to human history, one of the best I've encountered. Impressive given the scope of the project, this book manages to be an easy and compelling read, with each page introducing a new topic or thing to think about.

It manages not to get distracted going down tangents while still being dense with information and intriguing. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Quite interesting. From the beginning, all the way up to today. It explains the history of the world. From the wars, to the locations of these wars. The location of the countries even.
