Sufism & Good Character

Rate this book
Translated by Faraz Rabbani. The Prophet Muhammad (upon him be peace) said, "On the Day of Resurrection, nothing will weigh heavier upon the Scales than good character" (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi). The scholars of the science of Sufism explained the way to live the guidance of the beloved Messenger of Allah (saw), outwardly and inwardly, and guided people toward the perfection of good character and spiritual realization. In this work, Imam Zafar Uthmani presents key Prophetic sayings related to good character and explains their implications for those seeking the spiritual way. To further the benefit of the book, commentary on many of the ¡adiths has been added from the classic works of Mulla Ali al-Qari and Mawlana Ahmad Diya' al-Din al-Kumushkhanawi.

To be honest nothing in here is specific to Sufism but I appreciate Sufis put a lot of emphasis on the inner purification and remembrance of Allah. I felt this book was a good one to end Ramadan with. The author discusses the importance of remembering Allah through dua, acts of worship, repetition of phrases and words and most importantly reading the Quran.

He highlights how Sufis take mundane permissible acts and mentally make the intention to use it to please Allah, these acts then become a form of worship. This has been a game changer for me as it's helped me fill my empty mundane tasks with meaning. For example, the 1.5 hour round trip of dropping my kids to the mosque has had an intention shift of me making that journey so my children can learn more about their relationship with Allah paired with swapping the news on the radio for quiet tasbih or practicing my kids' hifdh. You may argue, surely that's common sense, why was I not doing this already? But motherhood and life in general has a way of exhausting you to the point where you welcome empty entertainment or laziness.

The book also addresses the characteristics expected in a Muslim and the bad habits and characteristics to avoid. Again, it held nothing different to other books targeted to the wider Muslim community as it is Quran and hadith based but I find constantly reminding myself of these helps me to better identify problems within myself. As a home ed mum who can't schedule in time to attend sisters circles, books like these provide the feeling of being around role model muslims and we all know how that has a positive influence on us. Another reason I enjoy reading books on muslim characteristics is because it helps to reaffirm and strengthen those specific traits and their value. When you live in the West and all you see is mainstream norms and them seeping into the Muslim community it's easy to adopt those traits without even realising it. Whilst repetitive, it is important for me to constantly revisit the topic of muslim characteristics to reaffirm my belief in them and to reflect on whether I'm living upto them.

A blessed work. Short and simple, but heavy. May God Allow its reader to benefit and bless the author and translator!

The essence of Taṣawwuf is outlined in this book. It may be short, but each page has a great amount of guidance.
