This was an unexpectedly delightful read. Unexpected mostly because the cover screams "I'm an amateur with no clue how to produce a book". So when I didn't find grammatical errors or editing mistakes, I was pleasantly surprised (note, it doesn't do to tell me there are some. I don't doubt there are. I don't tend to notice unless it's really bad but what I'm saying is that this one isn't bad. Probably). And when I liked the characters, found them engaging, believable, and fun? Well, that was just icing.

And maybe that's the strategy here? Like, set expectations so low that everything comes across as an unexpected delight? Possible, I suppose. But I wouldn't encourage imitating it if so because I very nearly didn't bite.

The hardest sell of this is Hannah. She's straight but pops out about having a girlfriend; to the relief of her family who have all thought she was secretly gay all this time and just didn't trust them to come out. Which was kind of hilarious even though it wasn't played for laughs. Indeed, Munro plays it very straight (ugh. How can you say that better? "commits to the device" just doesn't have the same flow) so that I still took her seriously enough to see how she got where she is. And Munro shows, with some skill, the internal landscape that lead to how that happened. And I particularly liked how she got there without trying to put any particular label on it because at this point, it's all about Hannah as a person and frankly, identifying exactly what category of not-straight Hannah is would have been the least interesting thing about her.

It doesn't hurt, to, that Ashley is so sweet. I loved how she was open and caring even though their relationship was (okay, started) fake. So she invited Hannah in for reasons that were perfectly adequate to be going on with, even though she was appropriately guarded about becoming too entangled. So it was easy to see how Hannah would totally fall for Ashley because she is so very awesome.

Throw in some great banter and a couple warm, but meddlesome, family dynamics and you have a great story, I think. Or, at least, one I'm happy to give all five stars and my gratitude for a fun time.

A note about the author: I'm tempted to hit Munro's backlog, but there's a bit of a troubling break in her writing and this book represents a return after a long dry spell. The afterword addresses that, some, and contributes to my reluctance to go spelunking. I will pick up the next story she writes, however, and with some eagerness.

A note about Steamy: There are one and a half explicit sex scenes keeping this on the low end of my steam tolerance. And this is another area where Munro's skill shines because it was exactly what it needed to be.

Funny witty Scottish banter, meddlesome mothers and a straight girl pretending to be gay, but what happens when it's not really an act?

Hannah doesn't want a relationship, she's perfectly happy being single thanks! Any boyfriend she has had left her unfulfilled and she never felt true love or attraction for any of them. But she insists she's not gay. But the rest of her family thinks she is. So do some of her friends and acquaintances. She simply triggers their 'GayDart' and doesn't know why.

Exhausted by her mothers efforts to set her up with boys, she jokes about a date with a woman - her mother who had apparently joined and been an active part of a local LGBT family group club (like PFLAG) is simply thrilled her daughter is FINALLY coming out, and sets her up with one of the fellow mothers from the groups daughters to date.

Ashley is out and proud, but gunshy with relationships. She had been through the ringer with bullying and homophobia in school and had similar with her fathers behaviour before he passed away. She also had been in a closeted relationship with a woman who was full of denial and self hatred and would never admit the relationship, only to leave her high and dry for a man. So Ashley has sworn off relationships, especially with 'straight' girls wanting to 'experiment'.

They meet and Hannah is honest about the ruse, but they find they get along well as friends. They get drunk and create a pact to keep their meddling mothers at bay by 'pretending' to be girlfriends to attend functions.

As weeks and months go by, real friendship turns into real attraction, and Hannah finds herself confused along with Ashley, neither wanting to hurt the other. Ashley being especially sensitive, and Hannah simply not wanting to admit things about herself that she didn't even know, yet was so obvious to everyone else.

The depth of their emotion and care for eachother is clear, as is their attraction. It all works out in the end after a bit of drama and angst, but nothing too intensive. So we get our HEA and epilogue and I couldn't stop grinning.

Just a nice light hearted lovely romance with a bit of fake relationship trope, and a bit of 'straight girl' drama that isn't really that straight. Also a bit of friends to lovers, really, too. I enjoyed the banter and exploration of the relationship that came about in such a wily way!

A kindle unlimited read.

Super cute fauxmance that was executed really well.

Hannah, a seemingly straight woman and Ashley, a lesbian, end up in a fake relationship to keep their mothers off their backs. It's not a new premise but the author did a superb job fleshing it out.

Some takeaways are that Hannah and Ashley actually communicate (for the most part) and I felt like both of them behaved in a mature manner. And Hannah, though attractive in her own way, doesn't seem to be the supermodel type.

Munro did a good job both with building the intimacy between Ashley and Hannah through consistent and witty interactions with each other but also giving believability to Hannah's arc in coming to terms with her sexual orientation epiphany.

With the story taking place in Scotland it also adds a unique flavor to the read.

Overall, this was a fun, sweet, and entertaining romance.

SO GREAT! This was a truly fun romance, very sweet and hiLARious, and yes I may be biased because it is set in my favourite city in the world and knew a ton of the places the MCs wandered to. This had a Clare Ashton flare to it with the quick, dry wit and fantastic side characters which fed the story at a lovely pace. I truly enjoyed the story even though there was nothing new about it, but for the first time in a long time, I kept thinking about it after I put it down and looked forward to continuing it. Well done, HP Munro! 4.5/5.

5 Stars - so fun and funny just 100% enjoyable read - one of the few books getting added to my "re-read" list

This book is GREAT! Many, many laugh out loud moments. The MCs are super likable. Their friends are fairly well fleshed out and are just the type of friends you'd want to have yourself. The angst is understandable. The romance is super sweet without being saccharin. I loved this book! Thank you CLAR and Annmaree for your great reviews that convinced me to move this to the top of my to-read pile.

If you are in the mood for a funny and sweet fauxmance that will have you laughing and ends with a big ass smile on your face, this is your next read.

Very good book, with strong Scottish flavor, with two admirable main characters. Tt was easy to fall in love with Hannah or Ashley or with both. I would have awarded this book with the 5-stars-trophy if not for the ending. Not a bad ending, not at all, but I feel it could have been better.

I really, really enjoyed this book and read it at warp speed (for me). I wasn't going to read it at first because the cover put me off - for some reason it looks like it would be a YA/teen book? So, yes, I was wrong and I'm very happy about that! AND THE FAUXMANCE TROPE IS MY FAVORITE.

This might be a controversial opinion, but I enjoyed this more than Wrong Number, Right Woman (I can just imagine all the Jae fans coming at me with pitchforks, but I did love that book too - just not as much as this one!) I kept thinking back to that book and how the 'straight' main in that one dealt with her sexual awakening versus how it was done in this book. I liked that Munro didn't draw it out and make SUCH a big deal about it- the length of time it took felt realistic to me and I was really happy with the ending.

I found the story overall refreshing and kept thinking of Downton Abbey (not that it's set in that period, mind you) and the fact that I should be reading the book with a cup of tea and chocolate digestives.

I loved both main characters - stylish, but clumsy, Hannah and too-hot-for-you, firefighter Ashley both had plenty of redeeming qualities and I was smitten by them (especially Ashley). The scenario they found themselves in was unique I thought for this type of fauxmance.

Happily recommend this to anyone in the mood for a "I'm straight, pretending to be gay and in a relationship, but wait, I may not be straight after all" type of book. :)

Wow, there wasn't a single thing I disliked about this book! I'm definitely going to check out the authors other works.

I loved Hannah and Ashley. They had unique voices and I was rooting for both! They were relatable and I enjoyed both their POV's.

I loved the little hints sprinkles in that Hannah was gay but just hadn't realised it. I was so happy when the penny finally dropped for her.

All the side characters seemed real too, from the meddling mothers to Hannah's awful brother.

I want to read it all over again!

Reread edit: This was just as good as I remember! I did notice more typos and grammar errors, but they didn't lessen my enjoyment at all. Highly recommend!

This is the first book I've read by this author.

This is a two POV book involving the two leads in this book: Ashley West, dark skinned firefighter, and Hannah Melville, straight light skinned clothing designer (and shop owner). Both have Scotsmen fathers, though Ashley's mother is French (specifically from French Martinique, an island in the Caribbean).

Ashley and Hannah meet (as in actually meet as opposed to see each other from a distance but not recognizing each other) when their mothers set them up on a date. Ashley, you see, is a lesbian. Though, as she notes immediately when the two meet, she's not interested in a relationship, and before she can say more, Hannah notes that she is straight. Neither want to disappoint their mothers, and Hannah has "accidentally" came out to her family.

It took a little bit of time, it wasn't a quick thing on eithers part, but the two agree to pretend to be in a relationship with each other. And, as happens, the two develop feelings.

I really enjoyed both main characters, and I loved their interactions, both humorous and not. And I rather liked how the book unfolded.

Last notes: book takes place in Edinburgh Scotland. COVID is not an issue. There's a huge dog involved.

What a fun read! This is the first book I've read by H.P. Munro, and it's got me wanting to read more of her works. I friggin' loved the humor here! The dialogues weren't just hilarious, they were also witty. I wanted to share snippets of it here on GR, but it would've been impossible to appreciate the jokes without knowing the contexts—and explaining the contexts would've taken away some of the fun in the experience of reading this book anyway, so you're just gonna have to take my word for it when I say, you'll be laughing your ass off while reading this book. It's currently the #1 on my list of enjoyable reads this year. It's definitely a book I'd gladly reread when I need some cheering up.

The MCs were both likable and sweet without giving you a toothache.

The story's toaster oven romance done right.

Love fake relationships? Then this book's a no-brainer.

Overall, my mental health high-fived me for reading this one. I give it two thumbs up! 👍🏻👍🏻

This was a very cute comeback for Ms. Munro. Fake-relationships can be a favorite trope of mine if done correctly and this one was!
Ashely and Hannah are set up on a blind date by their mothers after Hannah tries to get her mom to leave her love life alone by saying she’s gay. They then decide to fake a relationship so their mothers will stop meddling. As you might suspect, it backfires.
‘Mutual Benefits’ was filled with humor and wonderful characters. My only complaint was, as other people have noticed in other works, the drama doesn’t happen until the 90% mark. It made for a quick ending, although the epilogue helped.
Definitely recommend for a mostly fun, romantic comedy.

Hahaha... I can’t help laughing and grinning away while reading Mutual Benefits. I don’t believe I’ve read anything quite like it, I meant the theme. Straight Hannah, pretending to be gay (who realised as we moved along the book that she ain’t that straight after all) agreed to a pretend/fake relationship with Firefighter Ashley (who is biracial and model personified)... just so they both can get out of their mum’s hair... What follows are great witty banters and chemistry between the two lovely ladies and new words for me to add to my own urban dictionary.... A really enjoyable read 😀

This was my first book by this author, and although it wasn't as laugh-out-loud funny as I anticipated (humour is subjective) I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

I did find myself smiling often, and I loved the Brit terminology, so similar to here in New Zealand.

Oh, and Philip is the boom! Everyone should have a best friend like him.

Oh yeah... this was fantastic. Both Hannah and Ashley are such great characters that I was rooting for them from the start. Their friendship to me, made their relationship that much more enticing. The story just flowed and there were no boring bits for me.

I love me my faux romance stories and this one got me in the feels.

Now this is what les-rom is all about. Super story, well told, excellent back characters, good bit of angst thrown in - love the anti-parent vib when they know all along, cracking. And set in the streets of Edinburgh where I've stayed. Excellent.
PS: love the cover.

Scottish banter in a fauxmance, I loved it. Gays pretending to be straight is something that happens all the time, but the other way around? That’s a fresh approach. Funny how the family reacts as well. This is just a fun and enjoyable read. The big drama comes a bit late, but I do love the resolution. Thinking about it I think the last 20% of the book is what let’s it down a little, there is too much that comes into play and I don’t think all of it is necessary.

Still overall a fun read that I could recommend to anyone who enjoys fauxmances.

This is such a good book to get me back into reading! I've heard good things about Mutual Benefits and it certainly did not disappoint! The story is simple and pretty straightforward, but I loved every bit of it. I liked both main characters, Hannah and Ashley, as well as the supporting characters. I also appreciate that there was diversity in this book as one of the main characters is biracial; it's a breath of fresh air as most books have overly white characters. Another thing that I loved was that the author did not try to overcomplicate the plot and just gave us an enjoyable read.

While this book will definitely benefit from some editing and proofreading, the issues were minor and they would not affect the reader's overall enjoyment of the book. I would give this book a 3.8, rounded up to 4. :)

It is indeed humorous this book. The 2 main characters, i like how they interact with each other. Even if they were in fake relationship but their interaction was natural, sweet and funny at the same time. With all the muddling families and friends, they also became close friends than lover...

my review getting lamer and lamer... 🥲

All in all i enjoy this book!

Hannah Melville has always felt like the odd one out in her family. While the rest of her family (parents, twin siblings – sister and brother) are all into science one way or another, Hannah is a dress designer. She is successful enough but still feels defensive. As the oldest child, she’s also been something of a conformist and is chafing a bit under always being responsible and predictable. At a family dinner with her parents, when her mother turns the conversation towards Hannah’s love life – again, she decides rock the boat and announces she is gay. Only, instead of the shock and negative reaction that she anticipated her parents celebrate her “coming out” saying they suspected it all along. And the next thing Hannah knows is that her mother has set her up on a blind date – with a woman.

✔Sapphic Book Bingo Challenge 2023 🌈✨: Main board - Blind date

4 stars. Well, that was fun. I love Munro’s writing style. My only gripe was that the humor didn’t land for me. None of it. But that’s really a me thing. I’m kind of a bitch and it’s hard to make me laugh in books. Other than that the romance between Hannah and Ashley was really good. They are set up on a blind date after Hannah comes out to her mother even though she isn’t gay. Ashley is gay and the two hit it off right away and start to fake date and it was so cute. While I really liked both characters a lot it was Ashley for me. What a babe. She’s a flirt, self assured, and a firefighter. Like, I’m obsessed with her. This was a very light and fluffy read with some drama thrown in at the end but I wasn’t even mad at it. I liked how it all played out. A great read and I’d recommend it if you want something cute and romantic.

Fake relationships are a trope. Mutual Benefits changed that story right around. With interfering parents, Hannah is loath to attend family dinners. She's single and happy. She's got a successful boutique clothing shop. She might not be the doctor or teacher like her other family members. She feels like an outsider. Her friend Philip laughingly suggests that she say she's dating a woman. Hannah does and the whirlwind begins. Her parents always thought she was a lesbian. Instead of rejection, she is met with support. That's great except she's not a lesbian.

Hannah's mom sets her up with Ashley, a firefighter who also has a meddling mother. Ashely and Hannah discover they get along well. Why not pretend they are dating? What could go wrong?

This story was fun, sexy, and charming.

Edited to add, (2024) just reread this, without rereading the synopsis. I laughed as much as the first time. Wonderful turns of phrase and plot turns. I still love it! Go on, you deserve this!

I love all HP’s books. This is no exception. The humour had me reading it with a grin on my face and I literally laughed out loud many times. If you only buy two books this year, buy two copies of this in case something happens to one of your copies.

One might expect this to be a dull read based on the frequent portrayal of 'fake dating' in romance books but I liked this story very much. I enjoyed the dialogue and thought this was well-written, though more unique at the beginning rather than the end with crisis and poor communication with the two mains.

This was the first book in a while which I looked forward to reading and finishing.
