Earth Healer

Rate this book
A curse on the land. A kidnapped healer. A laird who doesn’t trust magic, not even his own.

Angeline, a healer and earth elemental, wants nothing more than to stay safe in her cottage, practicing her herbal magic away from the critical eye of the village that ostracized her. Nothing can make her leave until a laird in need pays her a visit.

Damien, Laird of Fenris Keep, creatively leads his people despite the curse on his land. But he doesn’t trust those who wield magic power so easily. Angeline shows him the true power of magic. And when they decide to work together, a prophecy is fulfilled.

But when the curse on the land becomes a curse on the water, can they work together to find a solution? Will they be able to integrate Fenris back into the Omnos Island community? And how will they discover who is behind it all?

My favourite parts of Earth Healer were the magic and witchcraft elements. Odette writes so skilfully about elemental magic (earth in particular). I could have read an entire book about Angeline’s garden, Tonia’s solar, and Maude simply being Maude. I found the portrayal of these witches and their personal worlds to be original, witty and inventive – I was entranced.
As the lead character, Angeline is charming, and I liked her best whenever she was in her own element, so to speak, holding her own and hitting her stride.

This tale is definitely driven by romance, more than I was expecting. I spent the first section pretty much loathing Damien and wishing Angeline would just run away with Robert already! (I am very happy to hear that Odette has written a further tale focusing on Robert’s story.) [SPOILER ALERT]
But then Odette accomplished something surprising by genuinely redeeming Damien in a layered and self-reflective way. It was interesting how he had to confront issues within him that had not previously surfaced in his general behaviour and treatment of others. And he knew it.

I hope that the series continues with more from the strong character and magic elements of these ladies: Angeline, Tonia and Maude (they seem to create a world within a world) - and that the mysteries of what is going on magically with Omnos island itself continues to build.
