“The Joker War” part five of six! Things have changed, as Batman realizes he can’t fight this war alone. He’s going to need help. Before he faces down The Joker, he must call up his trusty partner Dick Grayson! But can Dick reclaim his lost memories in time to join the battle?
Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.
Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.
This was a good filler, but a filler nonetheless. The art is still wonderful, I think Jimenez brings a lot of emotions with just a few looks from the characters and it's something I appreciate a lot. Plus, his background scenes are always stunning, he puts a lot of details into them and make them look intense without taking the spotlight away from the characters.
This issue also confirms that Tynion writes a great Harley. He manages to keep the voice Conner and Palmiotti gave her while respecting the tone of the story and I love it. Not to mention he gives her the best one-liners and nicknames (Punch Bag and Duckboy are my favourites so far).
The storyline as a whole feels a bit like every other titles had to scratch whatever they were doing to allow their characters to join this fight. It's a shame, and one of the reasons I hate crossover stories. The amount of "read issue whatever of title whatever" here is just annoying tbh.
Anyway. I can't wait for the clown killer kid to make an appearance next time. I wonder if they will have the guts to have him kill the Joker and take his place or something, but he's clearly looming around for something big.
Harley is the best, I loved her call-out! When did everyone meet up together? All these interlocking volumes have me confused tbh. I'm following an online reading guide, but catwoman happend before this instead of after? Inaccurate guide, I guess? There were some really cool artistic panels, but overall not much happened.
There's a lot that I could say about this issue, but instead, I'm going to focus on one thing. Harley Quinn, and that badass callout of hers. I feel like she verbalized a lot of what many of us have been thinking, and I adore her for it. Granted, she did it in the most Harley way possible, which is about right for her.
Ok! This wasn’t too bad. Not much action, mostly talking. Finally Batman has brought the family together to take back his city. Why did it take so long? He apologizes for not calling them in from the beginning and I appreciate the effort the writer is making to clean up the mess of his predecessor.
Here’s the thing though, I wonder how they’ll finish up this arc. Will they make the bold decision to do away with the Joker once and for all. Because, to be honest, Harley has a valid point about letting an anarchist like Joker run wild time and again.
If Batman must stick to his code, then let’s do away with Joker in some other way. Let him kill himself, accidentally die or let him get betrayed by someone he trusts. The Joker has to go. He’s not just hurting Batman, he’s hurting all of Gotham.
I’m not happy about Cat helping the villains, but I’m assuming she’s got some plans up her sleeves.
I love the colours in this issue. So vivid and vibrant. They drove home the comic book nature of this story, while not making it look too silly.
The art isn’t bad either, but the faces are too goofy. I did enjoy how the artist draws almost all the characters wearing super tight outfits. It was great to see how Dick, Jason and Tim all look like they’re about to burst out of their clothes, but not because of ridiculously disproportionate muscles. Equal opportunity tight clothes needs to be par for the course in comics. Now if we could do the same with plunging necklines and booty shorts, I’d pick up more titles.
I like the twist at the end, but I hope the series hasn’t already reached its crescendo.
Obviously a build up for the #100 issue. It had some very cool page from an artistic point of view. The story was always, but clearly a build-up like I said, not much happening, bunch of characters coming in, felt stretch a little, add some tension to it. It did it right because I'm clearly excited for the next one. Maybe not the best on itself, but at a good place in the series.
One of the best issues so far. I'm kinda sad that it's ending soon, but well... I enjoyed it a crazy lot while it lasted. Also, I got to read the Batfam in this one... and that last scene with Harls! I swear I could die for all these characters. Anywho, cannot wait to get my hands on the following comics!
Batman gets the gang back together, but nothing can prepare him for what's waiting in the ACE Chemicals building-- zombie Alfred and Batman Joker! It's a minor gripe just cuz she's barely in this ish, but I think Batgirl's costume from this era stinks.
Best ad: The Justice League tie-in issues for Dark Nights: Death Metal! I love a kooky alternate reality story!
OH MY GOSH!!! First off, Jorge Jimenez did such an amazing job with the art in this one. The city views, the full-page spreads, just amazing! Second and foremost, Tynion really is surpassing himself with this issue! Beautiful family moments, comedy, and ooohh that ending!
Day 182: More of a filler issue than actually advancing the story. I seriously hope Punchline is retired for a few issues after the next one. Given Joker’s hatred of failure from his lackeys, he should have killer her after she didn’t take out The Bat.
