“They were as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire.”
Elsie Crenshaw of Gobbler's Knob, West Virginia, runs from a cruel stepfather to take refuge with a widow who introduces her to a successful matchmaker. Elsie, having no family, feels the need of a protector after what she endured from her stepfather. Elsie gives the matchmaking ad a try.
Dr. Conner Van Beauregard Van Gates the IV, has lost his wife during childbirth. He lost his successful practice in Missouri and moves to Hays City, Kansas. After two years, he finds himself lonely and needing help running his clinic. His faithful housekeeper talks him into trying the matchmaking service.
How could either Elsie or Conner know a naughty cat messed up all the matchmaker’s matches? How could Conner put up with such a contrary bride? How do bank robbers and the evil stepfather bring them to realize opposites can attract?
Barbara Masci Goss is now just Barbara Goss. I live in Western New York State and have three grown sons, two step daughters and 10 grandchildren. I wrote my books in the early '90's and now that I'm retired I have obtained the book rights and am converting them to Kindle. That's exciting for me because I don't read paper books at all anymore. I have designed new covers with a new author name: Barbara Goss. My first two books "Captured Heart" and "Forbidden Legacy" went to a second printing in the mid '90's and the publisher added my name as Barbara Masci-Goss, but I now prefer to keep it short and sweet.
From Author Website:
I'm from Western New York, and I live with my husband and two cats, Mandy and Molly.
I wrote these books in the early 1990's in paperback. My publishers were Fleming Revell and Baker Book House.
Now, I have the rights and have put them out on E-Books so people can still enjoy them.
My goal in writing these books is to provide clean but still romantic and adventurous novels for all ages. I've always felt that we needed more clean, wholesome books. When I wrote these books there were but a handful of Christian romance writers. Now, thankfully there are more. My biggest influence in writing was Grace Livingston Hill. Enjoy.
The Matchmaker’s Mix-Up series can be read in any order. Each book is a clean western historical tale of mail-order brides and their matched grooms. With Agatha Sinclair’s illness, only one problem is her granddaughter, Maggie, doing the matching. Throw in a naughty kitty, Cleo, and things are about to get interesting.
After the death during childbirth of Dr. Connor Van Gate’s wife and child, the town has ostracized him, and he finds a new town in Hays City, Kansas, that will gladly take on the doctor. So Connor and his housekeeper/assistant move to begin a new life. But for Bertie, trying to keep house, cook meals, and assist has become too much, and she suggests using a matchmaker to find a wife. Begrudgingly, Connor does—yet when his intended shows up, she isn’t a single thing like he was expecting.
Elsie Crenshaw of Gobbler's Knob, West Virginia, needs safety, and with the help of an older woman in town, she will apply to become a mail-order bride and is matched up with a man in Hays City, Kansas. Elsie wants to marry and have a large family—but what a shock to learn that Connor doesn’t. Surely the distance will protect her from her evil step-father.
The story’s plot will bring mismatched people together. Connor needs a wife to assist him in his medical office, and Elsie faints at the sight of blood. While they marry immediately, they keep the marriage unconsummated, needing to get to know each other first. What a shock to discover that these two are opposites in what they want. Will secrets and surprises interfere in this marriage?
Elsie: Had everything in her life happened in order for her to reach this point? Connor: You want to know what I think, Elsie? I think God put us together for a reason.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. Connor and Elsie are opposites, yet a connection forms between them. While she doesn’t believe in God, Connor relies on God and his faith. These two seem to butt heads but eventually find a solution. When evil threatens them, love wins and saves the day. Sometimes, opposites attract, and they discover the chemistry in the middle.
Connor: You know, we haven’t disagreed much lately. Elsie: I think, we’re finally a perfect match.
This was a quick and easy read that I kept coming back to after watching Youtube videos. I liked getting to know Conner, Elsie, and Bertie and hope to come across them again in other books by this author.
Have I mentioned that I LOVE mail order brides books lately? Because I DO. There's something about a couple meeting for the first time, getting married, and falling in love with each other slowly as they get to know each other.
...maybe that's why I loved that reality show series Married At First Sight.
There are a couple of things that bothered me about this book, though.
1. There is talk about attempted rape that borders on being almost graphic. 2. Conner doesn't want to get Elsie pregnant, so he utilizes a natural family planning method and is a bit graphically talked about
The first should have been labeled as a trigger warning for readers sensitive to rape talk, and as this is a Christian novella, I just found the graphic talk mentioned in item two to be a bit...much.
Regardless, I did enjoy this book and enjoyed the Bible passages found in it.
Connor- widower left JC Mo to KS to start new. Elsie- has an abusive stepfather I enjoyed reading this captivating story that is well written with lovable characters. This story is opposite attract in a witty with some drama involved. Their story has a wonderfully sweet and complete HEA!
Elsie and Conner both signed up with a highly regarded matchmaker. Sadly, said matchmaker fell ill and her unskilled daughter attempted to match couples.
Elsie is fleeing an abusive stepfather, and Conner is a widowed doctor. His wife died in childbirth.
Elsie is exactly opposite of what Conner expected in a bride. But something about her smile hooks him and he marries her. But keeps it in name only as she's not a believer.
In the meantime, there's bandits to deal with along with an angry, revengeful step father that shows up.
Later, when Elsie does give her heart to the Lord, Conner is ready to consummate the marriage. However when she mentions children, his old fears spring up.
**possible spoilers** While I enjoyed this book, the act of consummating the marriage was all they talked about and thought of for so much of the story... for a Christian book, that surprised me. Also, when Conner rescued Elsie from Frank - she just rubbed her wrists and smiled?? After facing what almost occurred, she should have been traumatized! And some of the phrases were too modern for the time period. People didn't say "seriously" in the same manner that we do nowadays. And Elsie seemed to have lost her WV accent shortly after appearing on the scene. But otherwise, it was a very good story! Just my opinions 😉
What a conundrum! All of the perfectly matched couples are mixed up and the matchmakers niece must make this right. She does the best she can, but not quite getting it right. Dr. Connor Beauregard Van Gates the IV, needs to find a wife. He lost his wife and newborn at birth and has been alone ever since. Elsie Crenshaw, from Gobblers Knob, West Virginia is the woman he is sent. With the questionnaires all mixed up, Connor and Elsie soon discover they have almost nothing in common! They decide honesty and communication will be their best asset. They discuss their hopes, dreams, their pasts, and everything that they feel will be important to having a successful marriage. The one thing Elsie is not good at is compromise. At first she feels that nothing will go her way, and that Connor is forcing his wills upon her. But little by little they learn how to teach each other the way to a happy union is to meet in the middle and trust in faith. Even the faith and belief in God is a struggle for them at first. Danger, Drama and Love. This book has it all. Fantastic start to a new Series!
Barbara Goss always has a release just when I need to refresh my ears. Every book is always a good story with a wonderful message and this one is no exception. Conner's Contrary Bride is the result of the matchmaker's mix up! When all the forms are mixed up the cat, the matchmaker's niece does her best to reorganize. When Conner and Elsie find themselves matched together, they are ready to take the plunge. But now they are finding out just how different they really are. Will they be able to figure out a way to be together? Will the matchmaker's mistake work out in the end? I love this town, the characters and the story! Elsie has a troubled past, Conner has an unbearable loss and together these two learn hope, faith, love and compromise can build the best relationships. I love the premise of this series, showing that things may not always be as they seem and life's unusual turns may be for the best! Love, love, love it!
J Scott Bennett brings it all to life. He is such a fantastic storyteller. He creates the perfect voice for each character and finds the nuances to make each one so realistic. I love his performances and always watch for his releases.
I have long enjoyed the wonderful imagination of Barbara Goss as she increases the population of the West with brides and grooms. In this case, the Matchmaker's carefully chosen selections become cat fodder and the granddaughter's attempts to put the files back in order create chaos of their own. He lives in the middle of cattle country and she doesn't eat beef; he's a city doctor and she wants to live in the country; he's a Christian and she's a non-believer. Almost any subject which has two choices sees the two of them on the opposite side of the question. How on Earth did the Matchmaker put them together? But this tale does not consist primarily of domestic quarrels. We have an evil stepfather and a gang of bank robbers dropped into the mix to make things exciting. All the cross-purposes seemed like a first class "I Love Lucy" episode as I laughed my way through the entire story, listening to J. Scott Bennett enacting the various characters in the audio version.
Perfect Match In this story we have an easy going, caring man, a Doctor by the name of Conner who lost his wife during childbirth and who now needs companionship. And then we have Elsie who is very contrary in nature and who can also be quite fiery. She is running away from her step-father's amorous intentions. Both apply to the Matchmaker and due to a mischievous cat are mismatched - or are they? I was totally entertained by the goings on between Connor and his new bride. There were so many issues and disagreements which they had to work out so that they could live together. I guess that is what happen if one marries quickly without knowing anything about one's spouse. This story has many home truths woven into it. It is also well written, easy to read and it is my pleasure to recommend it. J. Scott Bennett as narrator was perfect. My review above is voluntary and unbiased written after listening to the audiobook.
I listened to the audio version of this book. The narration by J. Scott Bennett was perfect for this type of book and extremely well done. I love these stories by Barbara Goss. They are not what I usually read, but they are such an escape from anything from this time that they really take me away for awhile. I loved the way this one started out. The matchmaker's matched cards got mixed up and when her granddaughter tries to help, things aren't quite right--which Elsie and Connor soon discover. One is religious, the other isn't. Connor wants help with his medical practice, but Elsie passes out at the sight of blood. The differences are many, and so more important than others. As they spend more time together, neither is sure of loving the other. Will they overcome their differences and follow the fork in the road to love? I was given a complimentary copy of this audio book. All thoughts are my own.
Love the premise of this series! I think they will be fun books. However, I didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped to. Conner is a Doctor out west. His housekeeper pushes him to apply for a wife through a matchmaker even though Conner doesn't want to remarry. Elsie arrives and it feels like Conner's life will never be peaceful again. They disagree about EVERYTHING! It was frustrating and annoying. Elsie wanting everything her way doesn't seem to fit with her hard upbringing....she didn't even care to ask Conner for his preference on so many things! Conner was a great guy and so patient. But Elsie was overly annoying. It was fairly preachy. I also didn't like the housekeeper's advice to cause a fight to clear the air..... so I didn't really like this book. But I'm looking forward to trying more books in the series as they are released!
True to form, Barb Goss has penned a great book to start a new series about MOB mixups. This is the story of Elsie, who needs to flee from an evil stepfather, and Conner, who lost his wife two years ago. The matchup they get from the matchmaker is totally opposite from what each of them requested and it seems they are as different as night and day. With the help of God and a mischievous cat, the couple begin to discover that maybe they are not so different after all and "opposites do attract". You will enjoy this story filled with humor, warmth, misunderstandings, mishaps and love. I highly recommend this book...it is delightful.
Elsie flees from her harsh stepfather and finds shelter with a woman who presents her to a matchmaker. Elsie needs someone to love and look out for her wellbeing, for she has endured great hardship. Dr. Conner Van Beauregard Van Gates, the IV has dealt with much adversity, especially his wife dying and losing his practice. He is downhearted and in need of someone to aid him in running his practice. Connor and Elsie are brought together but quickly learn they match nearly zero in relatability. However, when conditions get chaotic, and peril arrives, both understand they were there to rescue each other—lovely, encouraging tale....with a beautiful message of mercy and grace.
When God chooses who he wants to be your spouse, you just have to trust that He really does know best. When Conner prayed for the right bride after the death of his first wife, he never expected for it to be someone with completely opposite ways. When Elsie was praying for a way to get out of town and away from her murderous step father, she never expected that her life would change so much. You'll enjoy reading all about how these two mismatched people, find God's will in their union. This was such a delightful story!
I listened to the audio book of this book. What happens when Agatha, the Matchmaker, steps away from her desk after putting all her matches together. Her cat destroys it. Her niece must make sense of it after Agatha gets sick, she hopes she has it right. The first matched couple is Connor and Elsie and from the beginning, you can see that they are not a perfect match, and nobody can understand why. There are funny times, serious discussions, but with the good Lord watching over them, will they become a perfect match. Enjoyable and great narration.
What a fun book to listen to! Conner and Elsie are puzzled at how different they are having gone through a matchmaker, filling out the form with all of their wishes for a match. So entertaining to watch all they go through as they strive to make their marriage work. The journey is sometimes sad, but mostly amusing.
J. Scott Bennett is not my favorite narrator, but the stories he narrates by Barbara Goss make up for any deficit in the narrations.
I requested this audio book from Audiobooks Unleashed and have voluntarily left this review.
I received a free copy of this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed in exchange for an honest review. Sadly, Dr. Conner Van Gates searches for a wife after his dies in childbirth. A seasoned matchmaker is called in and falls ill causing her important paperwork to become switched. The unlikely pairing is the premise to this story. Set in the mid-west Elise Crenshaw travels to his small town and brings plenty of baggage. Her hopes and dreams are opposite to his and forms the foundation of this story. The narration was good.
I love when God has a different plan than we do. Three page questionnaire to make matching Dr. Conner Van Gates with his perfectly matched mail order bride. Well, God seemed to have a different idea as to what makes perfect. Elsie is the opposite of every answer he gave. Barbara Goss gives us the expected romance, but we also get danger, villains and humor. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Conner and Elsie work their way through the mismatch.
Fabulous characters that your immediately drawn to. I loved this twist on mail order bride, so fun. So much not in common but the story that gets woven around this is excellent. Some action with bad guys that kept me on the edge of my seat and rooting for Connor. The author does a fantastic job with a book that touches the readers heart and keeps you smiling until the end! Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
I went back and forth between my ebook and my audiobook versions. I loved both, but I preferred the audiobook! The story Barb wrote was wonderful and full of surprises! And, I loved Scott's narration! His voice is definitely better than my head voice and had just the right sound for a Western! These two make the perfect book creating combination! I think I'm really going to enjoy this series!
This faith based romance is clean and wholesome, and there are some fun plot lines to keep the story going. It is the writing that I couldn't get past. I found myself bored and unable to connect. It is written toward a much younger audience than the subject matter would be appropriate. If you enjoy middle school books and a clean, faith based romance, this might be the book for you.
"I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntarily left this review."
Due to a health issue, a cat and a granddaughter who wanted to be helpful, the match that was put together for Connor was the exact opposite of everything he thought he wanted in a wife. For Elsie, Connor seemed to be the opposite of what she was expecting in a husband, too. First of, Elsie didn't believe in God but Connor did. Eventually, even with their differences, each started making compromises. I guess opposites do attract.
This is a cute funny mail order bride love story written by Barbara Goss and it was all started by a cat. Well, it was really started by Conner’s bride request to the matchmaker. They are very much opposites. He is a pleaser and she is stubborn and contrary. You will enjoy discovering how Conner, and Elise, with the occasional help from the housekeeper, find their happily ever after.
A unique mail-order bride story in which the bride and groom have nothing in common. They disagree on just about everything. It’s a good book with a touch of romance, fear, unforgiveness, treachery, faith, and ultimately love. Although it’s rather short, the characters are well-developed. If you like stories about mail-order brides in the American west, I think you’ll enjoy this book. The Audible narrator is equally good.
A wonderful start to a new series! Elsie and Conner's story was an absolute joy to read. This is an inspirational read and has just enough twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. I loved it! I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Conner's Contrary Bride is the first book in the Matchmaker's Mix-Up series. I adored this book! I have been counting the days until it's release. Barbara Goss has written another wonderful story about two people who marry and discover they have absolutely nothing in common! I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the entire series!
I was sorry to read the matchmaker was ill but her cat did what cats do best. The book pulls you in fast. This is one of those you don't want to put down until it is finished. I am looking forward to this series with a great line up of writers and a mischievous confusing up the matches.
I had an audio book of this story and it was a fun listen. The narrator did a nice job differentiating voices so that you could easily keep track of who is who and what is going on. I enjoyed the way the author approached the story and the characters in her story were well written. This was a great opener to a new series.
This was a fun read with suspense throughout. I thought the characters were well developed and believable as was the story line. That being said, this story didn't grab me as much as others from this author have.
The narrative was well done.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this review.
This was such a good book! I loved all the characters and it had a great plot. Conner and Elsie ended up being a great couple, even though they were so different from each other. A sweet love story that had just enough drama and suspense to keep me turning pages. If you like sweet historical romance, I recommend you read this book.
What a good start to a new series... Can't wait for the next one...so happy to find a new book by this author.... This author just does not disappoint... Just could not put this boom down.....
