Humanity's descendants face certain annihilation as a nightmarish alien race carves a bloody path of destruction through the Frontier. One man must assume the mantel of absolute power if any are to survive.
The Kaiyos Imperium introduces its readers to a brand-new universe set in the far distant future. The story weaves together fully fleshed out and immersive world building with fast paced action and intrigue in the best traditions of the space opera and military sci-fi genres.
Betrayed by his leaders and sent to die defending a distant planet, Praetor Gaius Aurelius Marcellus finds his most ruthless adversaries are not the genocidal aliens he's been sent to fight, but rather his erstwhile leaders, who will do whatever it takes to maintain their tenuous grip on power, even as their civilization burns around them.
While navigating a lethal labyrinth of political intrigue, he uncovers an ominous secret, kept hidden from the public for a secret that promises to forever change the face of the galaxy, if he can live long enough to take advantage of it.
As the situation grows ever graver, Marcellus must decide how far he’d go to ensure the safety of his people, and who he’d sacrifice to achieve his goals.
In the end, he discovers the galaxy is more complex and treacherous than he could possibly imagine, or hope to prevail against.
The is a very well written alien invasion story and the author does a fantastic job in character development. I like the way the action part of the plot and the political and treacherous parts work together.
My main criticism is that the space-based maneuvering of the ships is extremely unrealistic. Large ships on our oceans can't maneuver quickly, and that's when they have the friction of the water to push against. In space it's much, much more difficult to change directions quickly, so when someone says "move us there NOW," it's pretty unrealistic. Inertia, gravity, and orbital mechanics are almost completely ignored.
However, in spite of that, I really enjoyed reading this story and have given it 4 stars.
Obviously based on the Roman Republic this was an excellent adventure .Great world building, can almost see the cities and architecture. Complex political twists ,The characters were well developed .So this was great, loved the people ,action and aliens ,bad aliens,we don't like the bad aliens. This is one of those books were you really want to know howlives of the characters develop as a result, when is the sequal? I want to meet the real bad guys, find new allies and see how Giaus married Miri.
The book felt like an amateur Heinlein / Card fan tried to give it a shot, and failed. Lacked originality, details, and continuity. This could easily have been turned into a series if it had been paced properly. Instead it’s like a movie script in some parts and space opera in others. I can picture a 60’s TOS Trek like vibe. Fun in parts, but low budget basic throughout.
I really enjoyed this one. I had no idea he was going to bring it together or get out of some of those situations but he did. I did have a problem with the names for a while but that was probably just me. This was entirely different from other things I've read and I would recommend it highly.
This book has interesting characters and an intriguing storyline. With lots of action and suspense as well as a great insight into the ethics of those who fight for their people instead of their greed and need for power it will keep you wanting more.
This is an excellent story with many changes and increasing intrigue. It’s not just one story but more like 3-4 in sequence. The good guys are truly exceptional and heroic. There are moral lessons and lots of action to boot. I might even buy a sequel!
Such a good story. Very detailed. I took my time reading it. There are lots of characters . When I come across a story this detailed, I write a list of the characters and their jobs, so then I can refer back through the list as read through the book.
What a tome! A fantastic book with excellent storyline, would have been 5 stars but it wandered at times. That said highly recommended, interesting plot line, good characters if you can get past the Roman Empire thing in space.
An enthralling epic space adventure with great characterisation. Fast paced with never a dull moment. Looking forward to reading any further sequels. Very highly recommended. Thank you 🙏 Bernard Lang
Very few grammatical errors. The author shows a good deal of foresight into their writing. Very imaginative. Keep upbthe good work. I would read more from this author.
Best space wars book I have read. Not just the action but the strategy , logistics etc. give the big picture. Well rounded characters with believable interactions. Will have to look for other books by Bernard Lang.
This is a great military SF series. The author provides a superb integration of the Roman Empire in space. It has outstanding characters and plot. I highly recommend.
