Who do you trust when betrayal threatens to destroy everything you hold dear?

When Arionna Jacobs fled town in a desperate bid to save Dace Matthews, she never expected the chaos she would leave in her wake. Now her closest friend is dead, and another is missing, forcing Ari to return to face the devastating consequences of her actions and the broken boy she left behind.

Her problems are only just beginning.

Even as her bond with Dace grows stronger, Arionna finds herself weakening when Freki's cage shatters. Fighting the wolf for control is tearing her apart piece by piece. And at every turn, she finds that those she's put her faith in aren't who they seem, bringing her face to face with Sköll and Hati. As the depth of their betrayal is revealed, Freki spirals out of control, and Arionna must face her greatest fear: losing herself to the fierce wolf within.

The world balances on the edge of a blade, and one wrong move will destroy it all.

With few allies she can trust and few choices left, Arionna must decide between the lives of her friends and her own future with the alpha she loves. Will she be able to stand firm for the sake of the world, or will she falter in the face of defeat?

Lots happening in this third book. It starts with a terrible fight exposing a betrayal our friends weren’t expecting, with horrific consequences. Meanwhile, Arionna, Ronan and Fuki are travelling home, having learned that they are being followed. Close to town, they are ambushed and Arionna is abducted, while Ronan and Fuki are left injured.

The story in this third book of the saga deals with trust and betrayal, as well as the ongoing battle to prevent Ragnarök. Dace and Arionna learn more about the depth of their connection, which is nice to see. Their love is strong, but they worry if they’re strong enough to ward off Sköll and Hati.

Speaking of which, those identities are finally revealed, adding to the betrayal. They learn just how close their enemy has gotten, and it hurts. They realize they might be too far behind to make a difference, and don’t know who to trust outside their small circle. Still, they carry on valiantly, determined to try and stop Ragnarök no matter what.

Meanwhile, Arionna’s health takes a turn for the worse. She’s not sure if it’s a side effect from her earlier injury from being attacked by Hati, or the result of her continued efforts to connect with Freki. Her poor wolf has been trapped in her mind for who knows how long. I enjoyed the scenes where Arionna reaches out to her, getting to know her better.

Two warnings: there’s a scene with the wolves that’ll leave you bawling. I know I was hugging my own dog close during that scene. I felt so sorry for both Arionna and Fuki. There is also one hell of a cliffhanger that comes out of left field and will leave you eager for the next book.

I started reading this many months after Fall and so I did have to trawl my memory to remind who is who, who is good and bad, each time a name was mentioned. Of course I couldn't ever forget Arionna and Dace and their two kindred wolf spirit/souls Geri and Freki. Their evolving relationship between each other and between their wolves made such a huge impact on me emotionally and psychologically during the first two books Fade and Fall.
This book I think, after reading it, feels shorter than the previous two but each piece of drama and action is highly intense. Plus there is a strong focus on trust, loyalty, lies and secrets in this third book. Both between Dace and Arionna but also amongst their small group of friend and family, semi-human and shifter alike, but also amongst their enemies as hidden agendas and true identities are revealed - not least of all that of Hati and Skol - the eternal enemies of Geri and Freki.
The danger gets closer to Dace and Arionna than either had predicted and proves their worst fears - that there is no safety for either of them and that they are incredibly unprepared for defending let along attacking the enemy and preventing Ragnarok.
There is also danger on an individual level from within as Arionna struggles to form a bond with Freki to make her strong enough to survive any attack without relying on Dace and Geri. But her human health is compromised with each new connection, leaving her more vulnerable despite the cost.
In the end a two-pronged attack is launched by their pair and their few remaining allies and although a minor victory is won - the sacrifice required to gain is one the reader will never see coming.
It leaves an ending that isn't in fact the final conclusion and I for one sincerely hope that A K Morgen continues to write out this stunning piece of Norse fantasy. I just hope it doesn't take too long for Book 4 to appear as I will most certainly not take so long to read it with this jaw-dropping cliff-hanger leaving me gasping for more.

I don't know where to start with this. A little less of the recapping would have been good. Its awlays helpful inthe beginning of the following book but this just got a bit repetitive. I did like how more norse stories were involved and the suspense. I didn't predict who hati was so that was quite a turn. Can't wait for the 4th.

we rejoin the world of Dace, Ronan, the wolves, and Ari to of course more bloodshed and fighting the keep control. I'm ot going to lie. With such a huge gap between books it too me a while to get into it which surprised me with how much I loved the first two.

The characters are still the same strong characters and their abilities are growing now. I just struggled because there was such a time lapse between them.

This book is a great length with an interesting plot. I enjoyed the characters of Dace and Ronan and their continued strength and ability to fight, even through dreadful and extreme circumstances.

I'm really hoping there is a fourth book coming out, because Mr. Defendi, I have questions.

For me, this series keeps getting better. I think the first book was hard for me to understand because I don't play the types of games these books are based on, so a lot of things went over my head. Three books in, and the story isn't focused as much on the game play, which takes away most of my confusion.

The chapter openings crack me up. They are a story unto themselves, and I hope nobody ever skips them. I especially liked the addition of Candice who while seemingly out of place, just plays into the flow of game and reality mixing. Plus, it was just fun having the narrator freak out for a few chapters.

The Cat of Darkness side story sometimes seemed random, but it had its purpose in the end, and it was always great when one of the characters would notice the animals doing their training exercises. You almost forget that they are in the same place as the humans until someone comments on how strange the cat is acting, or the fact that all the animals seem to be moving in formation. Each animal has its own personality, which I appreciate. It made them more than just one-dimensional side characters.

I will admit, the whole Bil/Bill thing had me totally confused until the end when it was explained. I kept wondering if I was missing something. Also Damico joining the revolution. I kind of get it, but still in the back of my head it doesn't make complete sense. I appreciate the multiple times characters tried to explain it, I'm not as confused as I would have been.

Now, I'm just going to wait for another book in this series to hopefully come out, because questions, I have them. They need answers.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Almost quit reading when I learned , but I'm glad I persevered. An excellent continuation of the story, and glimmers of hope that Damico might somehow get word out about his murder.
