"A girl gets kissed a few times and then left a mysterious card with a windmill on it, she gets kinda curious." — Candy
Your reaction to this will very much depend on how you like your RH. There are two main types of reverse harem smut driven or emotion/plot-driven. For me, this and most of Krista Wolf's are driven by the intimacy between characters. The plot is essentially there to string them together. There is a plot there in this case one lonely house sitting young women meets three best friends rather than simply dating one by one they all agree to share. The rest of the overarching plot is actually a fun story to do with saving and renovating a bed and breakfast.
What I liked was the communication. Discussion's of Candy's limits (though arguably that was moot to a degree), their financial situations. I appreciated the different love languages, shown consciously or not. We don't really see Tristan's but Soren and Lucus express their love and affection for Candy in different ways. And finally the setting. There is just enough Halloween fun in this to mark it as a spooptober book but it's not in your face all the time. These are some of the best Halloween costumes I've seen in fiction for a while, they're punny and cute. But damn it now I want to watch Legends of the Fall again and that always ends in tears. The man is typified as Vikings, really? Good lord I'm so in that is possibly part of what sold me on that, I never said I wasn't shallow (what? they're hot).
What I disliked. There was little discussion of safe sex or protection. Yeah, I know fiction but small things. Some of the writing was minorly frustrating. The smallest of the issues is an inconsistent nickname that I wish was used more (Soren calling Candy Milady) The intimacy kinda got repetitive. Tristan is an ass man and yes Candy likes it but most of the time that is all we see. The whole scene in the graveyard is needless and kinda cringe. This is all very much personal taste and I am aware of that.
I stated that your reaction will depend on you RH tastes, well mine usually run more plot-driven (Sienna Blake is my queen). This suited my needs, I wanted a book for the spoopy season I could read in a day. But I am less than likely to read it again. I'm rating it a 3.5 rounding it up to 4 because goodreads.
“Our situation, I mean. Soren. Tristan. The three of us, sharing you the way we have been. But you need to know that it’s only strange in theory — not in practice. For me, it feels as normal as doing anything else with my best friends. The relationship seems natural, as strange as that sounds.” — Lucas
