The story wasn't too bad, until the authors got bored of it, then wrapped the whole thing up in a few sentences... Risible... Considering the inch by inch progress of the bulk of the narrative, they finished the book as though they either had somewhere else to be, the house was burning down, or they just got plain tired of it. And it really was 1/2 a page to wrap everything, everyone that needed to, got their comeuppance in 1/2 a sentence, barley more. What a lazy way to end a book! What a terrible way to treat your readers! There is no way I could recommend this until/unless they gave a proper ending to everyone. Main characters from other series by the authors get bumped off so quickly, you blink and you've missed it. It's been a long time since I came across such a disparity between most of the rest of the 9 volumes and the conclusion. The conclusion looks more like a rough outline of how we'll finish up the story that readers have been slogging through, but then decided it wasn't worth their effort to elevate it beyond rough notes... This does not induce me to try any other offerings from these authors. And the title? "Memories of Old Earth"? It is so vaguely incidental as to make one think they decided over having several beers, "yeah, that'll do"... I just can't believe they think this is good writing.
Highly recommend not to even bother starting. You'll be looking for missing/unwritten pages when you get to the "end" with a "Huh? that's it"? "Really"? "I mean, really?" "that can't possibly be it.." " not after everything I have lived through with the various characters. The demise of the villains is as unsatisfying as the "heroes" victories... Really, don't bother... I'd give this several minuses if I could...
Wow! Talk about non-stop action. Empire policeman Lt. Anders Corsigon just wants to protect the good guys and stop the bad guys. But his attempt to solve a series of murders leads to unexpected consequences and he finds himself pitted against the empire he serves, in a mad race to save the galaxy. It's one step forward, two steps back as he acquires allies and faces one challenge after another. The main characters (and many minor ones), including the villains, are well-drawn complex individuals. The frequent fight scenes involving individuals, armies, and spaceships are all beautifully choreographed, and the world-building is realistic. This is the best sort of writing, that kind that makes you forget you're reading as you just experience the story.
First the protagonists aren't characters you really care about. Adding extra worlds and people doesn't help if they are all throwaways. The writers repeat the same things so many times the number of books should be at least a third less. There are typos throughout the books to the point I had to read several things repeatedly to figure out what they meant. The main "hero" should have died so many times along with his crew it got boring. Finally made to the end to find one of the most simplistic ever. After all the writing they finished the book in about 2 sentences. But if you just need something to do there are worse out there.
I cadqrc n't believe I read the whole thing; all 9 volumes!
I didn't think I would actually read all of these books, but I'm glad I did. To me the stories improved as the end of the series neared. I really liked the whole idea of the 500 year-old empress who wanted to control the entire universe (with the use of terrorist methods). I have to say that the best characte-r was the elf-girl (Dahlia) . She knew how to use all kinds of weapons, could fly any type of space-craft and was the all-around good person. Pace was young but was good with equipment. I wanted to choke Jake most of the time but I knew he couldn't help what happened to him. But to me the real pain in the neck was the policeman (who had formerly been a Palace Marine) who had quit so he could help the common people. That's OK but does have to tell everyone about it all the time? All in all I have enjoyed the series; and most of the other books by this author.
Prior to starting this series, I'd suffered through some truly terrible stories and writing in the SF genre. I was a little gunshy to commit to a 9-book series, but took the plunge.
I'm glad I did. The characters were fun, the story moved along. I think there could have been an Epilogue at the end of book 9 to tie up some loose ends with Black Rose and the three main protagonists, but otherwise this is an enjoyable way to spend several hours without worrying what book you need to read next.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading this series. However I wasn’t disappointed. There are characters you will love and hate. It is a romp going from one adventure to another. I wouldn’t call it brilliant but it kept me engaged. And I give it four stars for that reason.
Excellent characters with heart and drive. Action and intrigue enough for anyone to enjoy. Enjoyed seeing how the actions of a few can have far reaching effect. Recommend this series to anyone looking to add to their library. Great read!
The stories encompass the tenants of good sci-fi. Entertain, and release the readers imagination. The e editing and proofing needs a bit of refinement, but what you read will not distract you from the story.
You have created another series of books that kept me reading as fast as I could to get to the end of the story. I've read most of what you've written so far and look forward to reading about the next adventures you are working on. Don't make me wait too long
Stick with it. It is a lot of reading. But you will enjoy the interaction of Anders, Dalia, Patch, and Jake. Finally the meeting with LOHIU brings it together in a great story.
Quite a story. Told with consideration and expression at the same time. Detailed in its telling, but also exciting to be carried along with. I liked it a lot and hope the author produces another space extravaganza of similar style again, soon.
This book really wasn’t hard to write. All the authors had to do was suspend any thought of internal consistency and type away. At least the book was mostly grammatically correct.
Rebellious heroes, evil bad guys, trusting fools, lots of battles, great tech stuff, action galore, a surprise in every chapter… loved this book. It started out slowly, but hang in there. No sex, no innuendo, just non-stop space adventures.
Within the first 20 pages I was intrigued. The author James David Victor has written another Master Series, nonstop action, packed with plenty of suspense, harrowing escapes, strange twists you won't see coming. EXCELLENT story telling.
Very entertaining and creative storyline with unconquerable and dangerous major characters. The central character keeps his objective in mind as everyone in the galaxy around him is in chaos.
Good read, flows well and has good characters. It's an interesting galaxy and situation. Here's the problem; as with sooo many other series, the editing falls way off and screws the flow badly! I really don't understand this, but it happens a lot!
Let me start by saying I enjoyed this series. My criticism is that it tries to do too much. Lots of great action but at the cost of real character development.
Thoroughly enjoyed this series and highly recommend you try it. Great characters, great story, great space battles, truly evil villains and great writing.
