Holtes and Sietsma have written an action-packed story, filled with operational details related to both ‘good guy’ and ‘bad guy’ activities. The detail describes and uses the highest level of technology related to data processing and analysis, telecommunications and facial recognition; much of it invented for the story.

The story is a clash to the death of a multi-billion-dollar criminal organization referred to the “spider web” and a multi-billion dollar extra-juridical organization that remains unnamed. The spider web specializes in extortion, murder, black-mail and drugs. He seems to specialize in political black mail and has collected immense power in countries around the world. With all this, he senses the protagonist is getting closer and plans a car bomb intended to kill its prime operator. The police force used most in this book is the United Nations Bureau of Investigation. While UNBI is a sound police force, it has a mole. All other police forces maintain their national focus and leak like a sieve.

The protagonist is run by a very rich, mobile phone and whiskey magnate. Operations are run by an extraordinary woman, Saundra, who is always seen on a screen but never in real life. Saundra uses a suite of artificial intelligence and facial identification apps to help clear the confusion surrounding the criminal activities and to help predict the next activities. Saundra never has to be told and always seems to know what is happening and how to take control.

The book is written in an unusual format. The reader rarely hears characters, rather we hear what the characters hear and say, and we hear what they think. We also see what they see. This makes everything look narrow. Most of the police forces are made to appear incompetent. Two or three of the protagonist group have dark itchy swaths across the palm of their right hand. These characters all appear to have unusual mystery regarding their parentage and heritage. The story gives this heritage more mystery than this characteristic would warrant. This aspect of their physiology seems to be the only aspect of the story that seems suitable for growth and a Book Two and Book Three.

A lot of bad guys die or get arrested by various local police forces. In fact, they get captured by the protagonists and handed over to local police who have not been able to capture them without the help.

Setting aside its unusual format, the story is still interesting. Three Stars
