Margo Lewis is taking her first vacation in years, having won a week-long stay at a campground where she will be glamping in style. Unfortunately her relaxation is cut short, when fate decides to throw her old flame Conner Anderson into the cabin next door. And as if that weren't enough of a gut punch, her controlling family, complete with wicked stepmother, Jean, decide to infiltrate the peace and quiet of the campground in a desperate attempt to bring Margo back under their control. Can Margo and Connor, with the help of the bestest boy Scout (a sweet lab Connor inherited from his brother) rekindle their high school romance, or will Jean and her meddling ways get the upper hand once again?
This was a super-cute romcom which had some of my favorite things: witty banter, a fun setting, and a canine companion. I enjoyed the laidback atmosphere of the book and it really made me want to go on vacation... though preferably without Jean and co, which is why this book was a 4.5, but I rounded up because Carrie is great. However, Jean was just SO unlikeable it was borderline uncomfortable in places. And while we had glimmers of Margo standing up for herself, there was never really a moment where I felt like Margo had vanquished Jean for good, and that was sad. I did appreciate that the author didn't put in a reconciliation scene between the two that had Jean in a blubbery mess where the two had it out and all was forgiven, because, well... families are messy, and life doesn't always work like that... but I wanted a little bit more from Margo and for Jean to go away just a little bit faster. But overall, I really enjoyed this second novel in the Hickory Hollow novels!
