Wounded in war. Captured by the enemy. Sold as a slave.
Despite his situation, Paaten believes his future is not in the enemy land of Hatti. As Paaten struggles to find his way back to his homeland of Egypt, he encounters a Hittite woman and finds himself in an unforeseen battle, waging the biggest war yet: that of his heart...
Will Paaten's perceived enemy ensnare his love and loyalty, or will he return to Egypt to fulfill his destiny and oath to Pharaoh?
Paaten's War is the third prequel of Lauren Lee Merewether's debut series, The Lost Pharaoh Chronicles, a resurrection of an erased time that follows the five kings of Egypt who were lost to history for over three millennia. The prequel collection continues with The Fifth Prophet and the series begins with book one, Salvation in the Sun.

Paaten's War was a wonderful addition to the third book in the Lost Pharoah Chronicles prequel series. As with the first two books, I binged read this in just a few short days. What I liked most was that the main character was a male for the first time in the series. This brought a whole new aspect of trials and obstacles to overcome that were different than the female main characters dealt with. Paaten had to endure a lot of physical/demeaning punishment of being held captive that tested him emotionally, physically and mentally. While also facing hard decisions and testing his loyalty to his Pharoah's army that he made a life oath of loyalty to. This book was engaging, exciting and well written. I really enjoy reading Lauren's books and have not been disappointed by any of her work. Definitely recommend!
Amazing characters and compelling story. I am a sucker for good historical fiction. Paaten's War did not disappoint. In fact, this whole series has been delightful reading and I'm looking forward to the next book. If historical fiction is your thing, read Ms. Merewether's Paaten's War and all of this series.
This is the third book of the “A Lost Pharaoh Chronicles Prequel” series by Lauren Lee Merewether. She published four books in the series so far and perhaps a few more are planned. This series is followed by a four-book series “The Lost Pharaoh Chronicles” by the same author. In the books of the “A Lost Pharaoh Chronicles Prequel” series, the author is introducing and developing the main characters which she uses in her next series books.
The story backdrop is during the reign of powerful New Kingdom 18th Dynasty Pharaoh Amenhotep-III (1390-1352 BC).
The story introduces an Egyptian military Troop Commander Paaten belonging to the army of Amenhotep-III. He gets wounded and captured in war by enemy Hittite and is sold as a slave to a Governor. The story goes on as captured Paaten travels through the enemy land and is tortured and humiliated by his various captors. He refuses to break down and give up and looks for opportunity to escape. He finally manages to escape and very near to the border of Egypt gets injured by the attack of wild bear and is helped by a Hittite civilian woman. He, while staying with her to recover from his wounds falls in love with her and decides to come with her to neighboring friendly country Cannan (Levant region of present-day Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Israel) and settles her. But Paaten is devoted to his pharaoh, the call of duty brings him to Egypt, and he joins the army back as a Commander.
I've read several of this author's previous books, based in ancient Egypt. This latest one is another prequel. Unlike the last two, which dealt with domestic life, the new plot focuses on Paaten, a Troop Commander in Pharoah's army.
Wounded and taken prisoner after a battle with the Hittites (not a spoiler, this happens right at the start of the book), Paaten faces captivity and possible death in the land of Egypt's mortal enemy.
I always appreciate this author's attention to detail and obvious love for her material. This brings an impressive level of authenticity to each of her works. One tiny quibble: at various points different characters are said to hum, sometimes in the middle of a conversation. I found this a bit odd, humming a tune or murmuring continuously out of the blue.
Overall, another colorful tale of life in ancient Egypt. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction.
It seemed a bit strange that a fairly high ranking solder in Pharaoh's army would be as "disturbed" as Paaten is about how women are treated in other countries or in war or as slaves. It also seemed like most of the book was spent on him mentally debating what plan of action he should take. Then in the last few pages, he makes his plan and poof, the end. I assume this was done because this is a prequel to a later story, but Paaten seems very naive for his place in Pharaoh's army. As I really hope to get more information about the Lost Pharaohs, I will continue reading the prequels and the series.
This is another illuminating prequel to The Lost Pharoah Chronicles. Like the others, it is a story set among different social classes, beautifully conceived and vividly described – the story of Paaten, the Hittites, and Niwa. The author is a master at guiding her readers to feel as much passion for her characters and their setting as she does, and I am very much looking forward to reading the next one, The Fifth Prophet.
Fascinating story based on Egypt’s known historical knowledge and embellished with fiction. Once you start reading you are hooked by the complex twisting of story and characters. Learning of various customs within different country’s . Learning the worth of women in society based on elements that could not be controlled at times. Still have more “Prequel’s” to read and then on to the “Compliments’s”. …😊
Book focuses on Paaten, captured in a skirmish between Egyptian forces and the Hittites. The bulk relates Paaten’s struggles to survive capture, torture, and escape to return to Egypt so that he can fulfill his vow to Pharaoh and his gods. This is the third book in the Prequel series that I’ve read. So far, I haven’t found them as mesmerizing as Pauline Gedge’s works,
What another wonderful book by Lauren Lee Merewether! The story of Paaten’s tenacity as a prisoner of war, his allegiance to his beloved Egypt, and the kindness and love he had for a Hittite widow was beautifully unfolded. I read it in one day because I just couldn’t put it down! I highly recommend reading this book!
I'm reading all the books in this series. Her writing brings ancient Egypt alive. Having read many non fiction books on Egypt and the Pharoahs, there is a such a great joy in reading these. I'm feeling as though l know these people. Wow.
Read it. LOVED IT! Thought I was too old to fall in love w/ a fictional character, but nope. Love Paaten, and will definitely pay more attention to him when I read the main series again.
Not as good as the first two. Mostly a romance and oodles of internal monolog. I did finish it and will go on to book 4 but I don't think it would matter too much if you skipped it.
