Something terrible happened to Clarinda Braxton 200 years ago. Recently widowed Sylvie Andrus is determined to find out what, even if she has to collaborate with ghosts. Her young son Jason tries to stop her, but Sylvie persists until she nearly loses him.

I’ll be honest. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a novel like this, two different eras with paranormal elements. But, Fite has done a wonderful job in creating a captivating novel. One that’s filled with a story line that will keep you hooked, guessing and wanting more. One that has characters that work their way into your heart and don’t want to leave. This alternate timeline story is unique and beautifully written. The emotions of the characters are felt by the reader, the pages turn fast and before you know it, you’re at the end of the book, thinking, reflecting and wanting more. I loved the way Fite captured this one and turned it out for her readers. I can’t wait to read more just like it!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Author/Publisher and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or negative.*
Have I mentioned lately how much I love ghost stories? Because I really do. There’s something about them that just lures me in. And Possession is one of those stories that swiftly lures you in, switching between two different perspectives and times to deliver the whole of the story.
What really makes this story so haunting and enjoyable are the characters. We get to learn so much about them and become invested in what is happening to their lives. Or what happened. And this book is short enough that the sharp focus on the characters is really what drives the story. And for me that’s what I like to see in a ghost story. I just feel like it makes the haunting aspect of the story that much more impactful.
I really enjoyed this new ghost story and getting a glimpse into these characters lives. It’s also a really fast read so you can easily devour it in one sitting. And I also want to just point out how well everything flowed in this book! Which can be difficult with a book set up like this.
You can view my full review on my blog! I also post about a lot of different types of books!
A ghost story with heart. Sylvie recently lost her husband and the father of her son Jason and is compelled by a postcard he left to move to a small town where she finds she needs to solve a murder that happened in 1794 in order to truly move on with her life. Soon after moving in to their new home Sylvie is visited by the ghost of her husband Ned who then helps her discover what happened all this year's ago. Obsessed with the case Sylvie soon finds herself possessed by the ghost who Jason tries to convince her is not his father and means then harm. Told from multiple POV's and alternating between the 1790's and 2015 this story weaves a compelling story I thoroughly enjoyed. My heart went out to Sylvie as she yearned for her dead husband and Jason who wants to play and make friends but is frightened by what is happening to his mom. I found this story to be well written, direct and concise and evenly paced. A short book, coming in at just over 200 pages, it can easily be read in one sitting. . Thank you to Ginny Fite, Milford House Press and Suzy Approved Book Tours for the gifted copy and including me on this tour.
I really enjoyed this book. Not many authors can transition smoothly to two different timelines but this book was done seamlessly. I truly enjoyed the story and the writing style. Perfect amount of paranormal without being overly done.
I’m featuring 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 by award-winning writer Ginny Fite as part of @suzyapprovedbooktours today. A multi-voiced paranormal story set in several time periods, 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 tells the story of people obsessed by the mystery of long-buried murders and how that possession changes them. 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
Recently widowed Sylvie Andrus moves with her young son, Jason, to a small river town, and discovers she must solve a two-century old mystery to rid herself of the ghost who haunts her. Still grieving, she finds the ghost of her husband, Ned, waiting in her new home to seduce her. At first, she resists his overtures, but soon she surrenders, and they begin to collaborate on a book about Clarinda Braxton, a Revolutionary Era painter who disappeared without a trace in 1794. Sylvie becomes obsessed by the task she’s set herself. Distressed by his mother’s behavior, nine-year-old Jason isn’t deceived by the ghost’s appearance. He knows this creature is not his father. Jason warns Sylvie the ghost is evil but, swept up by her yearning for her husband and determined to reveal what happened to Clarinda, she delays telling the ghost to leave. Only when she knows the truth about Clarinda will she be able to move forward with her own life. My thanks to @suzyapprovedbooktours , @ginnyfite and Milford House Press for the gifted copy of this book. It is available now to purchase at @amazon.
There are many things which I enjoyed about the story. Firstly, I loved the supernatural concept of Possession. The highlight of the plot for me was watching Ned re-appear in Sylvie’s life after she moves! The author wonderfully spins the storyline, especially once Jason starts interacting with Ned too!
Moreover, I enjoyed how the author kept the story fresh by alternating between the two timelines. It was interesting to see the Trelawneys and the Braxtons. Elizabeth shares a beautiful relationship with Clarinda in the past timeline, and James is a conniving character that you love to hate. Similarly, Annabelle and Sylvie also have a sweet friendship. Moreover, I loved Annabelle in the supporting role. She came across as a quirky historian and town gossip and was very entertaining. Also, as the story progresses, the author seamlessly connects the two timelines’ characters beautifully. Some of the characters, like Daniel, also had an aura of mystery around them.
However, probably the only thing that threw me off a bit was Ned and Sylvie’s relationship. The author narrates the way they meet, fall in love, and build a family in one chapter’s span in the beginning. I would have liked if the author spread their relationship just a little bit to adjust to them initially. Moreover, even Ned’s death and their move to the new house felt very fast as the story speeds up in the beginning. The pacing became perfect once Sylvie and Jason settle in their new home.
Overall, Possession was a charming supernatural tale with a touch of historical fiction and was a fun book to read! I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
GENRE: Ghost 👻Fiction; Mystery & Detective/ Women Sleuths; Thrillers/ Suspense.
57 chapters, 250 pages.
Does the name "Annabelle" ring a bell? Do you like, a bit of spookiness, in your reads❓ ______ 📌The story begins in 1794. The story of CLARINDA TRELAWNEY BRAXTON. In parallel, a story of SYLVIE ANDRUS & her 9 year old son JASON is also running, in the year 2001. Both the stories run in consecutive chapters till they amalgamate together to end in the year 2015.
But how? And why❓ ______ The town of RIVERTON holds many mysteries in its womb. Slyvie is trying to settle down with Jason, after loss of Ned. She misses NED ANDRUS, her husband. The ghost in her current house, exploits this emotion for his motive. He masks himself as Ned & she just cannot resist the familiarity & comfort.
Who is this ghost & what does he want❓ ___ Sylvie is writing a book, on Clarinda, on her sudden, mysterious disappearance.. A painter, an artist, an enigma, a beauty..of the bygone era.
How does the ghost relate to all this❓ ___ Jason fears the ghost & is not fooled by him. In fact he fights for his life, when he gets almost drowned. But Sylvie doesnot listen. It's as if, she's POSSESSED.
As if, someone is whispering something in her ears & she's typing like a robot.. ___ Is this ghost harmful❓Are all of them related somehow❓Does this story have a higher purpose/ ending, than what it seems now❓
Read 📖on & you will be pleasantly surprised. The ending sure leaves you satiated & relieved & happy.
P. S. : You sure get some lessons to ward away ghosts, on the way!
This was my first paranormal book and quite a captivating one. The book alternates between today and 1700s Riverton, Maryland. In today's world we have Sylvie who moves to Riverton after her husband Ned's death. She has a 9 year old son, Jason. In Riverton we have the town's famous librarian/historian Annabelle who becomes a very close friend of Sylvie.
In the 1700s we have Clarinda who is married to James Braxton. James is a member of the first Congress. He is someone you will hate throughout the book. Clarinda's best friend Elizabeth runs her father's business. 200 years ago something happened to the Braxtons. There is no record of their death. They disappeared without a trace. When Sylvie moves to Riverton she is set on finding the truth.
I loved reading about the woman friendships in the book. Whether it is between Clarinda and Elizabeth or Sylvie and Annabelle, these friendships become their support system. Their encouragement and love towards each other is beautifully portrayed. I also loved Jason. He is such an understanding kid. My favorite part was his monologue and his observations of elders particularly his mom.
The only thing that didn't work for me was the beginning. Ned and Sylvie's relationship was rushed. One page they met and on the next they were married. I couldn't wrap my head around that. Other than that the book progresses at a good pace.
I am a scaredy-cat so I don't read ghosts stories. But here the ghosts are not that scary. I found Verity and Whisper Man more eerie. So don't let that keep you from reading this book. If you enjoy history and detective novels this one is perfect.
Thank you @suzyapprovedbooktours for my review copy and for including me on this tour.
Ginny Fite, the author of “Possession” has written a suspenseful and intriguing ghost novel with historical background. The genres for this novel ghost story, historical ghost story, mystery and suspense, and fiction. The timelines for the story are set in the author’s present and goes two centuries back in time when it pertains to the characters or events. The author vividly describes the characters, landscapes, and events. There is a mystical and spooky feel to this story. The author describes her characters as complex, complicated, dysfunctional, obsessed, and possessed.
Sylvie Andrus is recently widowed and is obsessed to find a new start with her son Jason in a river town. After finding a note from her deceased beloved husband Ned, mentioning a woman named Clarinda from 1794 who disappeared, Sylvie is determined to find out what happened to her. Also missing from history is Clarinda's abusive husband. Somehow, Sylvie is being driven to write this story and investigate by suspicious action. Sylvie feels and sees Ned, her deceased husband. Jason, her young son senses great danger and an evil presence.
The story is narrated between two timelines that do connect, but there is great danger, threats and murder. I would highly recommend this novel for readers who enjoy a “ghostly” novel.
When Sylvie is going through her dead husband, Ned’s books, she finds a postcard portrait of Clarinda Braxton. She remembers Ned’s favorite saying “There are no accidents” and off begins a journey for Sylvie and her 9 year old son, Jason, as they move from New York to Riverton as Sylvie is drawn inexplicably to find out what happened to Clarinda.(PS- there were creepy chill bump moments for me in this one.)
The Past-(1794)Clarinda (who was a painter) and her husband,James, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence both disappear and the mystery of what happened to them has never been solved. The Present- (2015) Sylvie is compelled to write a book about Clarinda but Is Ned haunting her? Jason feels like it’s something more sinister. Why is a stranger following Sylvie and Jason? My thoughts- This book is so much more than a ghost story or a mystery in the past that needs solving. For me it was a deeply moving story dealing with loss, sadness and the need to grasp happiness. A character of note- For me, it was Annabelle Lee. In the story from the start, she is a waitress that Ned encounters and then reappears as the town librarian when Clarinda and Jason move to Riverton.
What an interesting book! I remember reading the synopsis, thinking "let's give it a go," as I am pretty finicky about books that have historical fiction in them and paranormal activity in them (I think that is what ghosts are categized as). When I began reading this book, I thought it might be a DNF book for me as I felt the book was SO slow to get started. However, once the story got started, boy did it pack a punch!! And it ended up being a page-turner for me! I really enjoyed hearing not only Clarinda's story but the story of Sylvie and Jason as well. While this book was set in 2 different time periods, it was easy to follow what was happening in each of them, and both time periods really held my attention. Ginny Fite writes a beautifully sad story about 2 different families both affected by death and the effects the deaths have both in the hear and now and in the afterlife. I ended up really enjoying this book. It was not the story that I expected, and I am pleased to say the story was better than what I was expecting! I hope to read more by Ginny Fite in the future!
Possession is written in two different timelines. Clarinda in 1794 and Sylvie along with Jason, her 9-year-old, in 2001. Sylvie decided to move to a new home in Riverton with her son after Ned's death. Only to find out that her new house is haunted by a ghost. As we go through the story we find more connection between the ghost and Clarinda who was mysteriously disappeared. Sylvie finds comfort in the ghost's existence and believes it's Ned's ghost, while Jason fears the ghost. the choice of characters was really good in this story. At times I wanted to shake Sylvie and make her understand .I also felt very sorry for Jason and everything he had to go through. This story is recommended for those who enjoy Paranormal stories.
In the 1700s, Clarinda Braxton disappears from Riverton without a trace. In the 2000s, after her husband dies, Sylvie Andrus uproots her life in New York and moves with her son to Riverton. Once there, some unknown pull drives her to dig into the disappearance of Clarinda all those years ago. She quickly becomes obsessed with finding out what happened... but... is she actually possessed?
This was both a love story and a ghost story. What Sylvie sees as a labor of love, figuring out what happened to Clarinda, the reader has a front-row seat as her possession takes place. This was also a story about grief, family, and support systems, and Sylvie had a great support system, even though she couldn't see it at times... but, let's not forget, she was possessed. In terms of the ghost scenes, this was very mildly tempered, so, if you enjoy a ghost story that won't have you up at night, scared over every sound, this book is for you!
Possession is a paranormal mystery that takes place over two time periods, the present and the late 1700s. When we are in the present we are with Sylvie and Jason as Sylvie becomes more and more obsessed with the book she is writing on Clarinda’s disappearance, and we go back in the past to see Clarainda’s life in Riverton and what happened to her and her husband (also missing) and meet her best friend (possibly more...?) Elizabeth. As the story winds back and forth over the chapters until it comes together and we learn the truth about everyone, past and present. This was a fairly quick read at about 250 pages and something you could enjoy in an afternoon. I am not normally one for paranormal stories, ghosts just aren’t my thing, but I did enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes the genre.
I give this 3.5 of 5 stars and thank Suzy’s Approved Book Tours and author Ginny Fite for the review copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to @suzyapprovedbooktours for my copy of Possession by Ginny Fire in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed this quick read. It was well written and kept a great flow. This novel does have a paranormal element which is a bit out of my norm but overall I really enjoyed it.
Sylvie finds herself widowed and looking for a new start she and her son relocate to a new town. She finds herself determined to solve a mystery from the Revolution of a painter gone missing. However the ghost of her husband warns her that she may be putting the life of her little family in danger.
I loved the way this story crossed two timelines in the quest to solve the mystery. This was a fun novel and I would definitely recommend this historical fiction meets ghost story.
Possession is a story about a long lost murder and what Sylvie needed to do to remove the ghost that was living in her house that reminded her of her recently deceased husband. But first she needs to solve the centuries old murder so she can move on with her own life.
I really enjoyed the fictional town of Riverton, set along the Chesapeake Bay. It reminded me of all of the wonderful little towns I enjoyed exploring in college. I liked the dual timeline aspect of the book going between the present and colonial era. While I don't normally gravitate towards paranormal, this book reminded me a little bit of the Karen White - Tradd Street series
Possession is out now and is available on Kindle Unlimited.
Sylvie and her son have moved into an old house in a quaint little River town. She is recently widowed and struggling to overcome her recent loss. Little does she know she is being possessed by a ghost, Clarinda Braxton. And Sylvie must solve her murder to get her to go away. And to complicate matters even more, the ghost of her husband shows up.
I love a good ghost story and this one is wonderful. Plus, it is a little different than the normal ghost story. It has tons of history and mystery. This makes for a fast paced thriller you do not want to miss. As a matter of fact you could probably read it in one sitting. It is told in two different time periods but the characters are fascinating and you just can’t stop!
I received this novel from the author for a honest review.
Possession by Ginny Fite is a ghost story with a twist.
The characters are quirky and interesting. The timeline alternates between the late 1700's and 2015 and this works well.
The multiple point of views work really well especially where the historical information is woven into the story line.
Sylvie Andrus is a new widow and has moved to a new town with her son to start over. She discovers a note from her husband about a woman who had gone missing in the late 1700's. Sylvie is on a mission to find out what happened to this woman.
This is a well written suspenseful ghost story but so much more. I really enjoyed the historical pieces woven into the mystery.
If you like mystery, the paranormal, or historical fiction you will love this book. Ginny Fite masterfully weaves all three into a captivating novel. I could have lived without the few 2001 timeline chapters in the beginning of the book so if you are reading those and aren’t sure if you want to continue, please do because once we get to the house in Virginia the book is one you will not want to put down. Getting ready for the winter storm…get this book it would be an awesome storm day read!!
Special thanks to Suzy Approved Book Tours for our gifted review copy!
I couldn't put this book down! It's a short & suspenseful read. Lots of twists & turns & I couldn't flip the pages fast enough. Read this if you're looking for a spooky story filled with mystery & intrigue.
