Otter Bay #2

Grinding

Rate this book
Two childhood best friends. One accidental fake engagement. One Labrador puppy. One week to fall in love.

When Harvey runs into his childhood best friend—literally—on the way into Otter Bay for his cousin's wedding, he doesn't plan to end up playing the part of the guy's fiancé. But one trip to the hospital and one tiny white lie later, and the whole town knows he's engaged to Iggy Beaumont, everyone's favourite barista and all-round sweetheart.

After being left at the altar by the guy Harvey once told him wasn't good enough for him, Iggy's heart still hasn't mended. He's not ready to date yet, but when Harvey offers him a no-strings-attached deal, he jumps at the chance for risk-free affection from someone he trusts.

All they have to do is avoid falling in love. How hard can that be?

They're only each other's first ever crush, after all...

Grinding is the second book in the Otter Bay series, but can absolutely be read alone. It ends on a HEA, with no cliffhanger, and contains: a chocolate Labrador puppy called Theobromine (Theo for short), an accidental fake engagement, coffee, lots of makeout sessions, a sword fight, steamy scenes, goats, a fairytale wedding gone wrong, and true love conquering all.

This was cute story. Harvey and Iggy were good together. It just took a little while for them to figure it out.

The way everything came together was really sweet. Once they got their acts together, and realized what they both truly wanted, everything worked out beautifully. There’s an epilogue that was so sweet it made this old girl almost cry like a big baby. I’m a sucker for romance. Sean Ashcroft does an excellent job of never failing to bring out my sappy side.

I also found myself cracking up a few times. Poor Seth and his fairy tale wedding. :)

Overall, a sweet, funny, and sexy read.

Just as sweet as the first book in the series but nowhere near as good as the first book. I had really high expectations of this book since Melting is my absolute favorite of Ashcroft's books. Maybe my expectations were too high.

I love Sean Ashcroft's writing. I can always trust this author to give me a feel good story to cheer me up. However in this book, it fell a little flat. I wanted more. More flesh to the characters. More background. More of everything. The epilogue was swoony though.

Decided to revisit Otter Bay after a dud read, and after finishing the book, I was left wondering whether I really liked it or it was just OK.

First off, the story was uncomplicated. So uncomplicated that it just swung right into things with barely any muss or fuss, and at times I felt like I was missing a huge chunk of the story, especially given the history between Harvey and Iggy. I kept hoping for a glimpse of the past and the angst of teenage passion to be, at the very least, touched upon, but we just get the bare minimum grazing, which left me wanting. The best-friends to fake fiance to lovers storyline was handled pretty well though, and I enjoyed watching the feelings get rekindled and the love and lust blossoming.

Harvey and Iggy were totally likeable MCs, and the ease and familiarity of their relationship is apparent from the start, and it was like watching events unfolding between two people you actually know. There was no drama, no complicated emotions and no unnecessary misunderstandings and whatnots. It was simple and sweet, and actually believable that they were and are best friends.

The writing and pacing was good, and the romance sweet and sticky just like the first book in the series. Unlike the first book though, I actually felt that at times, it was way too cloying and saccharine. I get that this is probably the way the author prefers to write, and that it is a romance after all, but I would have preferred that it be sprinkled sparingly instead. I actually came away from this thinking I need to seriously brace myself if/when I do next revisit Otter Bay.

♡🌟(¸.•♥´🌟He'd grown up into the perfect boyfriend.

This was one of the best friends to lovers books I have read in a long time. These two were like magic. You could basically feel the heat of passion rolling off of Iggy and Harvey. You ever had that one friend with whom you had not spoken to for weeks or even years and the instant you got back together, it felt like it was just yesterday? This was the feeling I got from these two and their love scenes were hot!

I felt all the feels with this book. Warm and cozy, like coming home to a comfortable bed with a thick blanket. Izzy and Harvey deserved each other. A lifetime of friendship lost on foolish actions, but rebuilt with everything that they'd been denying.

I can read this book over and over again. And had I not have other books vying for my attention, I would. It was good running into the cast of Otter Bay. If you have not read Wes and Hayden's story, grab Melting. But even better, watch these two fall in love in their own special way. I am excited for more from Sean Ashcroft in this world. Especially Dante's and Liam's story. One click and enjoy.

Oh. And did I forget this one hits my top 20 of 2020? There you go.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.

5 out of 5 stars
This book is about two best friends when they were children and now a fake engagement. This is the 2nd book in the Otter Bay series. I enjoyed them both and I have read and reviewed about 10 books by Sean and I enjoyed all of them. This is a stand-alone, contemporary m/m romance with a HEA ending and no cliffhanger or cheating. Although I was not fond of the main characters' names I sure loved the story. Another great sweet romance by this author.

Second chance\best friends to lovers MM Romance

3 stars!

This was an interesting story with lots of curve balls. I really liked the main MCs and the small town setting.

I found that everything was really predictable but it was kind of nice to just read some marshmallow fluff story where it was predictable.

This story is best for those who love a sickeningly sweet romance.

I thought book 1 was the sweetest I’d read, but nope! These two are just adorable and this was easy and fluffy on a day when I was feeling crummy. Don’t know if all the author’s book are like this but I know where to look when I need a sweet fix!

Absolutely loved this book

Iggy and Harv finally get together in this sweet, yet steamy story of love that took a decade to come to fruition. The secondary characters of Dante, Liam and Reggie are funny and perfect. I am going to continue through the Otter Bay series and I hope whoever reads this is as hooked as I am. Highly recommended.

DNF @ 46%

Coming off of how much I enjoyed the first book into a DNF for the next one feels really bad, but this story was literally just all fluff. At least the first book had some sort of conflict that threatened Wes and Hayden's relationship even if it was still fluffy, this one has less stakes than a vegan restaurant.

Iggy and Harvey's relationship was too easy. They apparently left on bad terms when they were kids, but none of that really mattered because they just picked up being friends immediately. There's this fake tension around them agreeing to be pretend fiances which would've been fine if they actually started off not being attracted to each other, because then there could've been tension around will they/won't they? but since they've already established mutual attraction, the only conflict is Harvey's impending return to work (which isn't compelling enough because nothing's realistically stopping him from just quitting and staying)

There are parallels here with Wes and Hayden's story. Harvey and Hayden both come to Otter Bay and expect to leave at the end, but the key differences really make things so much more interesting despite both stories being fluffy and low angst.

Wes and Hayden didn't know each other before the story started, so part of the intro was them getting to know each other. Then there was the small part where they both weren't sure if the other person was into them, so we had a little bit of tension (even though it was very small)

Iggy and Harvey already knew each other. And despite not staying in contact and having not seen each other for a long time, them immediately falling back into friendship takes away from the story. Like I understand the author's commitment to communicating like adults, but having Harvey hide or not say that he was gay to Iggy could've added some much needed conflict even if it would end up being a little odd. Then they just immediately accept being fake fiances and proceed to kiss and have sex without even any real sort of simmer period. Outside of the one time Harvey rejected Iggy's kiss, which didn't do anything to the relationship btw because they talked about it like adults, everything was just smooth sailing. I mean even seeing Iggy's ex (who left him at the altar) wasn't a point of conflict.

TL;DR Waay too fluffy, absolutely no conflict. I don't want to read a perfect story about a perfect couple.

Reading this book, I felt like a copy editor who had been stuck in a corner cubicle, working on manuscripts with too many errors ALL DAY LONG.
My mind was continuously pulled away from the story to take note of the errors that popped up regularly- missing words, incorrect word choice such as confusing further and farther, using adverbs when the sentences needed adjectives, awkward phrasing, repeated use of the same phrases, contradicting statements about the main characters.
Here are just a few examples: one of the main character saying he wished he had done a particular thing when he was younger and then later saying that character had actually taken that action(I’m keeping it vague to avoid any spoilers), both MCs emphasizing *several times* that MC1 didn’t really care for dogs but a few chapters later, we learn that he’s always wanted dog, conflicting descriptions of the mattress.
I could go on, truly. For quite a while. In great detail. But I won’t.
The main characters were cute and sweet but I couldn’t enjoy them as I wanted because the words used to describe them were so distracting.
This book was truly frustrating because, buried under all of those errors, was a story about a great connection between two men who always belonged together, even when they didn’t allow themselves to realize it.
I really connected with all the characters and I want to know about their lives but I don’t know if I can subject myself to another experience like this one, in order to do that.

4.5 * This author has fast become a favourite for me. I enjoyed this one with two childhood friends who reconnect with a bang, when Harvey hits Iggy with his car. He tells the hospital that he's his fiance so he can stay with him and they decide to keep up the charade for the wedding Harvey is there for. Before long they are both a bit too into it and remembering how they were best friends.

I like this author's books because the characters are so nice. I don't mean that negatively and they aren't all perfect (Iggy has issues after being dumped at the alter and Harvey is essentially homeless for his job and just stays in company apartments with no home) but they are people you would want to know and hang out with. They have an innate joy in life, good friends without being interfering, even if things aren't perfect and while of course you know there is going to be a challenge to true love, it doesn't get drawn out and they tend to resolve it pretty quickly. Even the ex who had dumped Iggy had a good core and there were good reasons, he wasn't an evil guy who purposely broke Iggy's heart.

They just make you feel so good when you finish.

Another fun, sweet, uncomplicated read with the adorable boys from Otter Bay. If you loved Wes and Hayden in Melting, you will fall in love with Iggy and Harvey. Lots of adorableness, hot boys, laughs, and sexy times.

Harvey is coming into town to be best man at his cousin Seth's wedding. When he accidently runs into his old best friend Iggy--literally. To ensure he can accompany Iggy to the ER, Harvey tells a little white lie that he's Iggy's fiancé and in a small town, news travels fast. To save face and to explore feelings they've had for each other since they were kids, they allow themselves to play pretend. Quickly, pretend starts to feel very real.

This was predictable and sweet and completely uncomplicated. Definitely a fun read. I'm just a little sad we never got Seth and Mark's story. Or maybe it's in another series? Either way, if you are looking for something easy and that leaves you feeling warm and happy, this is definitely for you.

Ok

I wanted to like this book more then I did. In fact I want to like this author more then I do. The stories are always cute romances with a solid backbone but with details left out or changed from one chapter to the next and a writing style that really annoys me sometimes.

Details: Harvey wanted to kiss Iggy at 13 but then forgot he actually kissed him at 14.
Harvey never liked dogs but thinks Theo is cute and then later always wanted a dog.

Writing style: There always seems to be parts missing. I always am rereading sections thinking I missed sentences. Ex: Iggy's first time topping there was legit no scene for it. He's never done it and then bam it's over with. Where was his thoughts, actions, what was going on theough his head the whole time.
Ex: Harvey always wanted to be a baker and when he does the first time at Iggy's store to help him out there was no details about how it went. Yes, later everyone loves his brownies and there is a line out the door but not enough details for me.

Solid backbone but lacking depth.

Nice story, sweet characters, quick read. There were parts that I was bored by and parts I found to be too sweet, but I liked that the start to their relationship wasn't dragged out, and I liked that there were no real "bad" guys in it. (A.K.A. exes who are evil douchebags.) There were some strange contradictions within the story, but I did like that there was no unnecessary conflict thrown in at the end purely for the sake of drama. It was all pretty emotionally consistent. But because there was no real struggle or friction at all, in either of the two MCs personal lives or between any of the characters, or even really in the few past glimpses we caught of them, the story felt a bit flat to me throughout. It could have used just a bit more depth.

Love, love, love this book!

I seriously love, love, love this book! It was exactly what I needed while my real world is full of stress and not fun stuff. This book is about the sweetest couple who were best friends who lost touch for a decade before reuniting for a friend/cousin's wedding. They were able to fall right back into their friendship before realizing it was really more than that. I loved how the story was so low angst with the challenges only coming from Harvey's job travel. Honestly, I wish I had 10 more books like this. If you're looking for a light, sweet read, this is the one for you.

Harvey is home for his cousin Seth’s wedding, and he makes up with Iggy, his best friend from childhood, whom he argued with 10 years previous.

Iggy has missed his best friend, and they are both pleased to be able to spend time together. Due to iggys ex, they agree to play at being engaged, which allows them to have some fun with no strings.

But the ties between them are much stronger than either of them is aware, and they fall in love, but don’t think the other person wants them.

Harv finally takes a chance on creating a life with Iggy, a home, when he’s never really had one.

Sweet story, with lots of lightness between the characters and nice moments.

Beautiful love

I am still swooning! I can't even gather my thoughts to describe how much I truly loved Harvey and Iggy.
The childhood memories, the making of new memories, old true love evolving into new true love. They're both seriously so unbelievably precious and perfect for one another.
Not only do you fall in love with them, the side characters will work themselves into your heart as well.
Their story is so sweet it'll hurt your teeth in the best way. The added comedy is hilarious.

Harvey & Iggy were best friends since they were little. Inseperable when Harvey came for the summers. Of course, everyone grows, separates but some things never die. Harvey comes back to Otter Bay for his cousin Sean's wedding. Accidents happen & he runs in to Iggy, they resume their friendship as if it never ended. Join them in their adventures of finding out what was once a deep friendship had actually turned nto a deeper love for each other. *I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book for an honest opinion*

so sweet!

Sometimes you just need a break from everything in an almost perfect world where the ending is always happy and the angst is super low. Whether it's a break from life or from the more angsty books I like to read, Sean Ashcroft is an awesome go-to, low/no angst author.

Harvey and Iggy are just so effing sweet! Childhood best friends that didn't take the leap finally get their chance after a crazy "run in/run over?" involving a cute puppy. Also, Seth's wedding fiascos were hilarious! Definitely recommend this book and this series.

A Caffeine and Sugar Rush! (And that's a good thing!)

It's been a while since I had an opportunity to read one of Sean's books. This one reminded me why I love them so much. His comedic writing style is a huge hook for me, with just enough pathos and drama to keep me engaged. There are plot twists right up til the end. Now that I've been introduced to the Otter Bay gang, I'll need to catch/keep up with then. As always, Sean, keep up.the great work!

I just love Sean Ashcroft’s books! This one is a wonderful story in Otter Bay. I read the first one a while back and this one was, I think, even better. I loved both Harvey and Iggy. The story was cute, the writing spot-on and the supporting characters were really good too. I liked Liam as well. He gave up Iggy because he know that he would always be second with him to Harvey. I really liked that and hope that his story is coming soon!

The Perfect Escape

Another palpable hit from Sean Ashcroft and he's provided the perfect escape from what's turned into a grim year. His characters are engaging, fun, lovable and gorgeous. There were moments when I was so engaged by Iggy and Harvey that it brought a tear to my eye even as I had a smile on my face. I shall so look forward to another visit to Otter Bay!

Awe!!!!!

These two are a match from the skies above for sure!!! They’ve loved each other since childhood but never admitted it. When they have an unlikely run in, their lie of being engaged causes the feelings to rush back quadrupled in size. I loved their story and hope to see Andre’s story soon

Wonderful book and great story

I enjoyed this book through the end of the story. Each chapter was exciting and showed two people finding themselves after many years apart. There are some twists and ways they found out the best way to find each other in a town reunion of friends attending a wedding of friends in the town. Only if a hometown could be so acceptable of gay people

Love of a Lifetime

I really enjoyed the story of two boys who have loved each other since they were seven. Perhaps our author might write a prequel about the high school years. The romance was genuine - these two guys really loved each other. There is a lesson here, too - communicate with the potential loves out there. They just might get away.

Oh So Sweet

Like the first book in the series I had a tough time deciding who was on the cover because neither Iggy nor Harvey is really described physically above the neck. But as I went on I figured out it's Iggy, and from there on this sweet, totally angst-free book entertained me no end.

That's because the story of childhood best friends Iggy and Harvey matched the blurb extremely well, and the relationship they develop when Harvey returns for his cousin's wedding is full of love, promise, and very hot bedroom activity.

I am sort of caught up in the Otter Bay community and am eagerly awaiting the next one, whomever might be involved. Meanwhile, get your kicks with this one.

So wonderful

I really loved Harvey and Igs story. Friends to true love. It was funny, romantic, sexy, poignant and best of all low angst if any. I look forward to more in the series. This was really the read I needed this week. Thank you for this Sean Ashcroft.
