★★★ One helluva ride! Unlike anything I've read. Loved it!"
★★★ A clever mash of X-files, Tombstone, and Dresden Files! ★★★
In 1885, President Grover Cleveland commissioned a special group of agents to investigate paranormal activities plaguing the nation. Unwilling to accept failure, he granted each the authority to operate outside the law. His directive was simple. No rules. No excuses. Just get it done.
Remy Kincaid and his cynical steed, Fable, head to the town of Wharton, Texas, to investigate the disappearance of several young children. As clues lead them from a decrepit old house to an abandoned silver mine, they soon learn that an ancient evil is trying to release itself upon the world.
★★★ If you enjoyed The Survivalist Series, you'll love The Watchman! ★★★
Events have made me who I am, neither a hardcore survivalist nor an all-trusting soul. I am a Boy Scout in the truest sense of the word—dedicated to family, country, and good citizenship. As you may already know, an enabling element of those ideals is being prepared.
It took the horrific events of 9/11 to wake me from my routine complacency. In one single moment, I came to realize that our world is not as safe as we would all like to believe. We have no guarantee of safety in this world. Disasters occur on an almost daily basis all around the globe. Major events in recent years have included the devastating tsunamis striking Japan and the coast of Sumatra, the rash of tornadoes that swept across the U.S. in 2011, Hurricane Katrina, the deadly earthquake in Haiti, and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to name just a few.
I believe with all my heart that we have a duty to prepare our families for the dangers they face. I started my preparation by reading nearly every disaster preparedness book currently available. If you check Amazon, you will see that I am the #1 reviewer for many of these books. Even with all the material out there, I could not find a single book that offered a complete, well-reasoned approach to practical preparedness. As a NASA engineer, I took up the challenge by conducting very careful research – disecting fact from folklore. Three years and many thousands of dollars later, I have finally released a handbook that offers well-researched advice that can be put into practice in the real world by normal families.
I wrote this handbook for my own family, but I would be honored to share it with yours. If you are not fully satisfied with the Handbook to Practical Disaster Preparedness for the Family, send it back, and I’ll refund your money, no questions asked.
I loved the premise and the writing was good enough. Some of the characters were great fun. However, the main characters' inability to keep it in his pants really hurts the story pacing at times. The fact that every single female in the story immediately wants into those chaps makes them seem shallower than they could have been otherwise.
I really enjoyed this book. Not post apocalyptic at all, just good old fashioned fantasy. The main character was very upfront about his faults, which made him even more endearing. And his horse Fable! What a fun creature. Really entertaining and can't wait to read the next in the series.
I love the simplicity of a good western, the idea that character matters and that we live in a lawless world but we stand for something.
Weird Western is the perfect genre because it gets at the crux of what makes a Western “good”, but allows us to step outside the deeply problematic Cowboys V Indians structure by giving the Horror over to actual Evil, not just people on a different side of the coin.
Weird Western has the lone hero fighting demons and monsters. It’s really the apex of the Western genre as far as I’m concerned and this is a very good example of what makes for a fantastic Weird Western.
When reviewing the Survivalist Series, I stated that it came along at just the right time to satiate my remorse at the end of Justified, the TV Show. Marshall Raines was much like Raylin Givens, smart, tough, and good with the ladies. Now comes Remy. A character with the same qualities combined with a moral code of how one should live their life, this time, set 100+ years ago in the Old West (for now) and the story is woven together with the supernatural. Wow! That was a cool twist! Thank you Mr Bradley for many hours of enjoyable reading and here's hoping Remy and Fable's next adventure is in the works.
Interesting plot and very well paced. The dialogue killed it for me, specifically any dialogue between the main character and basically any woman in the story. I don't regret reading it but it is very unlikely I will be picking up any potential sequels.
I read the authors "Survivalist" series which was entertaining and enjoyable but overall very straightforward. A kind of very good "Fast Food" story.
So i gave "The Watchman" a shot and did not expect anything more than from the first series.
Boy, was I surprised. It almost seems as somebody else has written this book.
The dialog is funny and original without being shallow, the characters are likeable.
The setting itself is a very good combination of "Supernatural", "Justified" and "Josey Wales".
You've got a "Clint Eastwood" kind of hero with all his flaws having a "carte blanche" to do whatever is necessary to battle supernatural evil. His horse to which he can talk (sounds crazy - but somehow...it works!!!),bad men, good men and women. And a completely new setting for such a "supernatural ghost hunter with a six shooter" setting.
I've never read a Western before, but this one really got to me.
You know you got a great story in your hands when you catch yourself thinking "Read slower, it ends much too soon...".
Hope the author is already finishing the next one.
Holy Crap!!!.....And I thought the Servivalist series was great!!!!!
When I read all the survivalist books...and the series ended,Dr. Bradley ended the series so superbly.....that it always stayed with me on how Great a series it was!!! But when I discovered THE WATCHMAN book just two days ago....and just finished it,....I was blown away!!! I don't give out many five 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 star ratings! All I can say is READ IT! When I read the book description on it being a hmmmm 'supernatural western?'...I was a bit put off to try it. Well ladies and gents .....I am extremely glad I did read it! Don't get me wrong....I LOVE a good western. The combination of the genres was superb! And when he wrote at the end that there will be more!!!!....well sh#@ fire!!!!....I CAN'T WAIT!!! Recommended to all who love a good yarn! Oh,and his horse Fable is a character all unto herself! Please write more sir!!! John in California.
Gonna miss Mason and Tanner. But this book sure gives me a lot of hope for some great stories with Remy and Fable over the next couple years (hopefully we still exist as a nation that have the time for leisurely reads over the next couple years...) I love the genre change. Maybe you can get totally insane in the future with a weird mutant goo survivalist/ watchman crossover... that might be fun. Anyway if Mr Bradley sees this, keep up the good work! And for anyone trying to decide... READ THIS BOOK!
I read the Survivalist Series and became an instant fan of Arthur Bradley, so I knew that The Watchman would be great and it was! Very pleased to hear that this was just the first book and that the Watchman story will continue. Can't wait until the next one. Dr Bradley paints such a vivid picture for his readers in all his books, you'll never want the story to end. I'm a big fan that became an even bigger fan after reading this book.
A wonderful read and every bit as good as The Survivalist series. Great characters, fun story and super natural all the way. Its well written, easy to read and very worth while. I got lucky with The Survivalist and found that series with 7 books already written. I peeled through all 7 in short time. They were a grand series with lots of great little snipets of information about surviving out in the world away from population. Highly recommended.
A very well written story set in the wild west with a great paranormal aspect. Sort of a one man version of The Wild Wild West without the gadgets or the train. This is the best thing I've read since Faith Hunter's last book! An excellent view of life in the wild west, I even know how to play Faro now. I look forward to Rey's next adventure.
This book reminded me of the westerns that I read when I was younger. The story has plenty of action and mystery which kept me reading until I could not keep my eyes open any longer. If you have not read the Mr Bradley's Survivalist series then you are missing out on another treat. I can't wait for the next Watchman book.
Don’t open this book expecting your run of the mill Western. You will be both disappointed (it’s not your typical Western) and very pleasantly surprised. Watchman is a very well crafted story that happens to be set in Cowboy territory. It is I hope the start of a very entertaining series!
Mr. Bradley continues the fine writing of his Survivalist series of which I have read 11 of the 12. This book requires a bit of acceptance of the premise. I was initially perplexed but continued reading. I was able to get past my initial WTH's and enjoyed the book.
After finishing the Survivalist series, I wanted to sample some more of Bradley's sense of adventure. One thing he always does is create friendships among characters that we empathize with to move the story forward and share his wry sense of humor. I hope he has more to come in this Watchman series.
I'd of given it a 4, but in the beginning you're lead to believe he'd find whatever happened to his father. But nothing else was said about him the rest of the story. Also some more backstory would've been cool. But good enough to read more of the Watchman
I read all the survivalist series and couldn’t wait to try this one out. Worth the sleepless nights to read it. Can’t wait to see what Remy and Fable have going on in the next book.
This is an amazing book and the beginning of a incredible series that I can't wait to dive into and see more of the Watchman world. This is a book unlike anything else I have read. Great Work Arthur Bradley you have outdone yourself.
Nice to visit a different time and era in this genre of book types. While not a western novel reader, this gave me something new to look forward to and enjoy. Good characters and a good story like.
Once started reading, I could not stop. Even though a fiction novel, it is nice to feel there may be good people in the world to do the hard job of making things right regardless of the cost, as I'm sure there are.
Bradley skillfully turns a man of questionable character into a superhero cowboy. The Watchman is a cross between a Texas ranger and a monster hunter with a little Deadpool sprinkled in. A fun and unpredictable read.
It was (is) an entertaining book, but though I had a nice time reading it, found the characters without any personality, hollow and lacking positive interest. Even the horse non-horse was silly. Gave it four stars because it is entertaining and easy to read, but won't be following the series. Too simple for my taste.
This book was completely different from the survivor series. I think I actually prefer the lone ranger and his horse to the multiple principles in the other series. Looking forward to reading more
This novel is the first I have read by this author. It is a mixture of the supernatural and a western. I think it was a good change of pace read for me, as I try not to read the same genre repeatedly.
I have read the entire Survivalist series and it was great so found this and decided to read it. Remy reminds me of two characters in the other series that I liked a lot. Hope there are more soon in this series.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has a unique way of smoothly flowing the story from beginning to end in all of his books. Highly recommend for an enjoyable read.
Fable steals the show! Love the premise and can see many more books in this series. Remy the MC is a bit short on compassion but when dealing with the supernatural you might need to be careful and make sure your act of kindness doesn’t kill you.
I’ve read all of the “survivalist books and thoroughly enjoyed every one. Since then I have been reading western horror so I was definitely happy to find that one of my favorite authors and genres have come together!
