"If the love doesn't feel like '90s R&B, I don't want it!"
To avoid being let down Toni Riley doesn’t ever make birthday plans, but a once in a lifetime private lesson with famed artist Arlan Parks just might be worth breaking the rules for.
‘90s Kinda Love is an R&B inspired, erotic romance novella series that takes some of our favorite songs from our favorite decade and gives a whole new meaning to going “behind the music”.

"I am a writer that creates stories and characters for black girls and women who never got to see themselves as the protagonist. Whether you were told that your skin was too dark, your hair was too nappy, your body was too big or too tall or all of the above, I’m here to tell you it was all a lie and I have something written just for you. For us."
I've had my eyes on the 90s Kind of Love series for a minute. This year I'm super focused on making sure that I use my Kindle Unlimited service to the fullest extent. Lay Your Head On My Pillow was one of the first books I had queued up on my KU check outs. This specific book in series focuses on counselor Toni and artist Arlan who have a brief encounter at the school while Arlan is working a mural. After some interesting conversations, the two agree to have dinner for Toni's birthday. This was a cute and quick read. I was really surprised when I learned the story behind Arlan's attraction to Toni, but it worked in the overall context of the story. I would have rated this higher; however, it took me a while to adjust to Glover's writing style. There were some parts of the story that were written awkwardly and didn't flow very well. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the story and I'm looking forward to checking out more of Glover's works.
I wish I liked this more, but it was just okay. To me the characters didn't really have chemistry even though we had some cute scenes between them. And it was so short that there was no time to get to know Arlan and Toni.
I normally don't like age gaps where the woman is the older one, but I didn't really mind it here so that's a plus.
There's this one scene though where Arlan is a bit stalker-y? Yeah I didn't like that.
This was a cute short read/listen about an artist that has a crush on a young lady a little older than he is....unbeknownst to her, she has become is muse....inspiring expensive art....14 years later, he finally has an opportunity to finally meet her and tell her how he has always felt about her....quick cute story. A new narrator for me, and she wasn’t bad at all.
Why only 100pages and I’m still all the way in my feelings!! Arlan was to damn cute and sweet for words!!! I think older woman age gap secret crush is my new favorite thing I never knew I needed! I am about to eat this whole series up!!!
Let me run to the art supply store and buy some paint because Arlan and Toni has made being messy so much fun and sexy. I can't wait to get more of this couple. Nothing was standing in Arlan's way of securing his dream woman. Definitely can't wait to dive into the rest of this series
This is a very short story by new to me author and narrator. Tanzania did a great job writing a very compressed story. I just wished it was longer so the characters get more of a chance to develop. The main characters, Toni and Arlan, have a little age gap where Toni is 7 years older. They are both attracted to each other and have one night to explore their feelings. Robyn Isaacs surprised me with her narration. She's new to me and I think she did a great job narrating both female and male voices.
Short, sweet, and sexy! This was such a fun story, and I mean…just look at that cover! Soo beautiful!👏🏿🖤 I’m so excited to read the other stories about more beautiful Black couples!🤩
Lay Your Head on My Pillow by Tanzania Glover about high school guidance counselor Toni Riley & artist Arlan Parks. Arlan has been creating a mural at her school, on the day of Toni’s Birthday her best friend pushes her to go on a date with Arlan. She has a plan, dinner, Arlan and body paint! Arlan has an even better 😏 Arlan is such a sweetheart and so secure in who is! Toni couldn’t turn the young man down!
This was truly a beautiful love story. Dreaming of a specific love for more than half your life & then have em in they most intimate way, is truly beautiful. Age was definitely not a factor with the connection that was made. A short story that made a huge impact! This author wows me with her originality!
The playlist was a wonderful experience while reading as well! Great job Tanzania! 🥰💯🤗
This wasn't great, but it wasn't awful either. I was a bit disappointed by the romance, calling it a 90s kind of love is a reach. The spice was pretty mediocre too :(
I will say, the playlist that is included was on point! Where the story fell short, the playlist picked up for me.
I also really liked our FMC, Toni. She was honest about who she was, the portrayal of 35 & single felt so real.
Anyway, not my favorite, but I will definitely be trying more from the author.
I was really looking forward to read this novella and now that I’ve read it, I don’t regret. This was about Toni, a 35 years old guidance counsellor, who was set up in a date by her best friend with one of her co-worker. who happens to have a crush on her. I found the novella cute and easy to read. The writing was good, avoiding a rushed storyline, though I wished for a bit more length. Toni stood out to me for her authenticity and clear desires, while Arlan's maturity and secure way of handling emotions made him appreciate him a lot.
This was a cute love story. This novella had well-developed characters and a nice backstory. The main characters were intriguing and entertaining. This story definitely reminded me of one of the old school 90’s movies featuring black love.
I’d recommend this novella to fans of Glover’s fairytale series. Her writing never disappoints.
This is my first read by this author. I liked it. I don't prefer novellas usually, but if an author can write a short that feels complete it's a winner for me.
I always like reading the older woman/younger man stories. We have so many stories that have the opposite, as if a women over 30 is washed up or something. So I liked that element.
I really enjoyed this short story among Toni and Arlan! The names of the character, Toni in particular is spot on as this is based off 90’s R&B! I was all in. This was sexy, straight to the point and has me wishing I had a date night like this!
This is my first read from this author and I really liked this book. Both Toni and Arlan found a way in getting to know one another outside of the school setting. I will say I like how Toni eventually let her guard down. She even called out of work the next day which told me she like Arlan more than she tried not to in the beginning.
Toni and Arlan were a good amount of cheesy cute and sexy. I really loved the idea that he had a crush on Toni since he was in H.S. It made their relationship even more adorable. It was a cute and fun read 😍
Cute short story that had me in the edge of my seat. I felt like I was there and can see everything that was happening. I know this is one out of five books in this series. I’m curious to find out if some of the characters mentioned in this book will make its way in the next.
I feel like such a cohesive story was told in only a few pages. A talent not many have. But there's more to explore with this story and i would like to read it
This should definitely be longer, but I loved how you got so much frim such a short, invigorating story. Passionate, sexual, and heart thumping. Highly recommend it.
3.5 stars. Let me first say I adore this dear author. I’m a fan for life! If you happen to purchase this book off amazon ensure you git the most updated version. The first one I got was full of typos and missing pages. Our dear author sent me a personal message after my initial review and informed me about the update....seriously could she be any more awesome! Anyway this hook was nice. I’m not the biggest fan of short stories but again I adore the author so I was game no matter what. I encourage anyone to Check out the book and I’m excited to see the next installment in the series.
Arlen had the cutest crush for a very long time but it goes to show you that when you know you know. Just one look and he knew Toni was it, just a live story that just gives you goosebumps
I was really looking forward to starting this series. This first book did not do it for me. There was no chemistry between the couple. The writing and the storyline were elementary. The longtime crush that Arlan had for Toni came off as more stalkerish than cute. He sounded unstable to me.
