Summaries Keep Improving

I have written a number of reviews of the summaries written by this company. I find some to be good while others are problematic. Overall, this one was an improvement over several of the other ones that fell victim to the trap of “Mr. Author then said…” that so often appears in summaries and adds nothing to what should be concise text. I like, too, that the author included more front matter than is typically seen in summaries, including her own personal take on the book and an admission of the difficulty of summarizing such a technical book, fact-laden with lots of references. Despite these good points, the book also had a few issues. For instance, the author sometimes used initialisms but didn't say what they stood for when they were first used; She did do this later. Some words used don't seem quite right. For instance, I think when she says “referrals,” she means “references.” The grammar, punctuation, and usage were also problematic at times, including at least one comma splice. I found, too, that the summarizer was perhaps too concise at times, not quite giving enough information for clarity, like in the section discussing damage data normalization. I definitely feel like the author skipped important information at times as the topics of the chapter names weren't always a part of what was actually summarized. (Perhaps the author didn’t mean them to be literal, too.) Despite these flaws, I felt like I was able to take away some good information about what the book was about and help me determine whether I wanted to read it or not—which is one function of a summary like this.

I received a free copy of this summary, but that did not affect my review.
