Wow! I LOVED THIS! It had me hooked from the very start! Alex has an accident in the very beginning-he severely injured his hip & he loses his ability to play sports. BUT, he seems to have gained the ability to see & hear ghosts. He wants life to go back to the way it was before the accident-he was happy, popular, an athlete, & not struggling w/loss. But when a malevolent spirit starts haunting him, he must accept his unwanted psychic powers & work w/his best friend(Jason), his paranormal investigator cousin(Hannah), & 2 friendly spirits(Mr. Thomas & Mrs. Wilson)to solve the mystery of the bones in the wall & put the vicious ghost to rest. If he fails, he’ll lose his family & friends to a gruesome fate. This was so engrossing! I can’t believe how fast I read this! & that evil ghost totally creeped me out! I got the heebie jeebies so many times! Loved it! The alternate reality the author has created where ghosts were released into the world in 1900 by accident is amazing! So creative, & detailed! She even put a glossary in the back for all the terms. It was so easy to follow & I never got confused. This is not only a terrific paranormal fantasy mystery adventure, but it has a huge focus on friendships, & purpose, & grief to just name a view. Alex doesn’t like his new gift at 1st-psychics are hated my most Untouched(people who can’t see ghosts)b/c they caused the problem in 1900 to begin w/. Plus, his dad is 1 that hates all things paranormal, & usually when psychics are his age(normally younger, his age is rare)they’re sent away, & he doesn’t want that. He’s dealing w/grief & loss-for his old life & for who he lost..So it was beautiful to see him learn more about his gift, & learn to accept it & appreciate it. This helped him so much w/that loss b/c he found a new purpose. The friendship dynamic b/n Alex & Jason is fantastic, & as they brought Hannah into it, it grew even more terrific. The characters are superb! The story is gripping & fascinating. Mr. Thomas & Mrs. Wilson have my heart. The book builds up so nicely to the big ending-& what an ending! Amazing! Also, Kirkus Reviews selected it for their new “Indies Worth Discovering” publication & Barnes & Noble selected book 2-Ghost Hunters: Pirates’ Curse as a “Top 100 Indie New Release”! How awesome is that? Can’t wait to continue on w/book 2! Highly recommend! Beautiful cover by Bill Ferguson too! 💜

Bones in the Wall
(Ghost Hunters #1)
by Susan McCauley
This is a middle grade fantasy/paranormal book that adults will enjoy reading. No teen angst, no childish behavior either. This is a great story with heartfelt emotions, friendships, discovery of yourself after loss, making new connections, and then there is the ghost thing😉! After a terrifying accident, Alex is able to see and hear the dead. This isn't a world like we know it, spiritualist opened something they shouldn't have and in 1900, ghost now are everywhere. Only some can see and hear them and all kids are tested at age ten. Alex is older than that and he was negative before and no one has ever received powers after that!
He goes with his Aunt, cousin, and a Class A psychic to a house to test his cousin's ghost hunting equipment. He can hear and know where the woman is and the murderer in ghost form is there too! But that is not the last Alex sees of him!
It's suspenseful with the evil ghost but very touching with different ghosts. Alex grows in his belief in himself, meanwhile this reader was cheering him on and loving ever minute! Definitely want to read the next book! Yes, I am an adult but it's that good!
I want to thank the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read the book!

*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

This was so much fun. Spooky but not too spooky. I didn't walk into it expecting it to be urban fantasy, so that was a nice surprise. If you're wondering what the world set-up was like, think The Screaming Staircase but modern. And I loved that. A very unique and fun twist on a regular old ghost tale.

The characters, especially the protagonist, were likeable and compelling. And the dynamics between them all improved throughout the book. Really, it was a fantastic set up for the rest of the series which I can't wait to read!

Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall is a middle grade (aimed at roughly ages 10-14) novel. The story features a sort of alternate reality in which the spiritualists of world caused “The Great Unleashing” in the year 1900. Since then, ghosts have overrun the world. Children are tattooed with protective symbols at young ages, and parents worry over whether their kids will show psychic abilities (seen as bad, very bad) before their obligatory testing at age ten. School includes classes like Occult History and elementary students are taught to draw protective wards and sigils. Doors and windows and even all electronics are covered in these protective symbols. Because the ghosts must be kept out. Out of your home, out of your car, out of your head.

No kid has ever developed psychic powers after the age of ten…until Alex comes along. A horrible car accident, a painful injury, and a close brush with death leave him with the sudden ability to both see and talk to ghosts at the ripe old age of twelve.

Add to this the fact that his mother’s just died, his father hates psychics, his aunt and cousin who live next door are kooky wanna-be ghost hunters, and he’ll never play his favorite sport, ghostball, again. Things are rough for Alex.

An unexpected encounter with a trapped ghost and her vengeful tormentor cause even more problems for Alex, and when the evil ghost follows him home…well, now we’ve got trouble. Alex must come to terms with his new abilities, think fast, learn on the run, and realize the power of true friendship and self-acceptance in order to deal with the BONES IN THE WALL.

A good read, perfectly paced, with funny moments and scary ones. This book does include the use of real sigils, prayers, and objects in dealing with the ghosts so if parents are averse to that kind of thing then this book may not be a good fit for their kids. Otherwise clear of profanity, drug or alcohol use, and anything remotely sexual.

I know I would have devoured this book in middle school. For that matter, I devoured it as an adult. Four out of five stars.

I received a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

BONES IN THE WALL by Susan McCauley is book 1 in the Ghost Hunters series - and this is a series that hit the ground running and will continue ramping up with each new installment! The story follows a young boy who suffers a tremendous loss and life change only to realize he now has these new "gifts." This is a world full of ghosts, sigils, wards, psychics, and more! Bones in the Wall is a great example of middle grade/paranormal horror that shows how it's important not to give up on yourself or others. There is definitely some suspense in this book and I am glad it does not get muddled down by any sort of trope-y teen angst but instead gets lifted up by friendships and a mystery! Susan McCauley has laid out the framework for what will be a series we can expect to keep seeing in the future!

I loved Susan's book The Devil Tree so I couldn't wait to start reading this one. Ghost Hunters - Bones in the wall is young adult horror that is at times scary due to the spirits that twelve-year-old Alex begins to see following a car accident that kills him mother and leaves him unable to play sports again.

There is a lot in this version of our world that has happened, spirits have been released and the untouched (people who can't see spirits) blame the Psychics for the state of things, everyone needs to have charms and sigils of protection to ward off spirits, I would have loved more on the history of all this came about, but this book had my attention from the start.

Once Alex begins to realise he can see spirits the ones he encounters first are nice and harmless but it becomes apparent to his aunt that he is a Class A Psychic (the highest there can be) when he attends a paranormal investigation with her - the spirit he encounters here is malevolent and follows Alex home.

There are several jumpy moments that will give the YA reading this goosebumps, and I for one loved them. I know this is middle grade young adult but at times you forget the characters ages especially when they are exorcising ghosts! This was a great start to the series and I can't wait to read more of Alex and watch his psychic abilities grow with the help of his aunt.

I received this book as part of an ARC review. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in this series. The world in the book seems based on the psychic craze in the early 1900's and the ghosts over running things. People adapted and use protections of sigils and amulets. Despite the knowledge that psychics caused The Problem, the untouched rely on them. The three classes of psychics with A being the highest work overtime to move spirits on. Unfortunately psychics are too few to deal with everything. Alex is in a car accident with his mother where she dies and he is gravely injured. Most psychics are identified at ten and Alex is twelve. Despite not wanting it, Alex becomes a strong psychic, a class A. Alex was an untouched before. While his first three contacts with spirits are good, the next one is not. Alex ends up fighting an evil spirit who tries to kill him with next to no training when the spirit takes out the ones with him. Luckily Frank agrees to take him on as an apprentice so he doesn't get shipped away to a psychic boarding school. Even his dad accepts him being a psychic despite his deep mistrust of them. I look forward to reading more about Alex as he trains with Frank and his Aunt Elena.

This book imagines an alternate reality in which ghosts were released into the world in a cataclysmic accident back in 1900. Because of this, people regularly ward themselves against ghosts, which are a normal, if unpleasant, fact of life. Some people are spiritualists who can detect supernatural activity in various ways, but these people are looked at suspiciously or with downright hostility because they were the ones who caused the ghosts to be released in the first place (even though it was hundreds of years ago, the prejudices still exist). Alex, the MC of the book, knows he’s not a spiritualist since kids develop their powers by the age of 10, and he’s 12. So, when he starts seeing and hearing ghosts, he thinks he’s gone crazy. This book will especially appeal to fans of Supernatural because the ghost-hunting aspects of the book mirror that show pretty closely—sigils and salt and such. (I’m not implying that the author stole those elements from the show since they’re all based on “real” ghost-hunter lore.) And the whole story is told with great middle-grade appeal!

***Disclosure: I received this book from the publisher in order to read it for the Cybils Awards. No other compensation was given and all opinions are my own.***

It's been a busy week, so I almost completely forgot about reading Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall until yesterday. I spent the majority of my morning reading this book while sipping on a cup of coffee.

Like most books I've been reading lately, I didn't read the blurb. I only signed up to review the book based on its cover, which I thought the plot was going to be an adult horror story. However upon reading, I quickly learned this a middle school story. (FYI: I do like reading kids' books!)

Ghost Hunters centers around Alex, a twelve-year-old who gets a "sixth sense" after being in a horrible car accident. He now can see and communicate with the dead. With the help of his best friend, Jason, and his weird cousin, Hannah, Alex must solve a mystery and stop a vengeful ghost.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall. It's a fast-paced, well-written story with likable characters. The story has a nice Goosebumps vibe! Readers of all ages will have a blast reading it.

Alex is twelve years old and has a bright future ahead of him, beginning with the Louisiana State Ghostball championships. However, on the journey to the big game, a fateful car accident steals nearly everything from Alex, including his ability to play. When Alex returns home, he finds his possessions exactly as he left them, but everything else seems to be different—including the fact that he can now see ghosts. Ghostball may be a thing of the past for young Alex, but a brave new world has opened up to him and he must do what he can to understand his supernatural sensitivity now that his entire world has changed.

This high octane novel introduces readers to both Alex and the world in which he lives: one that is strikingly familiar to reality while being steeped in the paranormal. Though the narrative does not make the backdrop of Alex’s reality tremendously easy to understand, it more than makes up for this deficit by the action that begins about halfway through the book. Once Alex has come to terms with his abilities and what they mean, he begins to embrace his unique skills in order to help the spirits he can to pass on. Action-packed sequences of adventure, danger, and horror pepper the later parts of this narrative, and readers will be hard pressed to put the book down until the final resolution has occurred.

Written for an upper middle grade audience, this book is accessibly presented using larger than average font, short chapters, and sufficient white space. Well-crafted characters—both living and dead—surround Alex throughout this story, and readers will easily connect with the souls in Alex’s world. The first in its series, this book helps readers understand Alex’s origin story as a psychic and provides a solid point from which to launch into subsequent ghostly tales. Fans of Goosebumps who are ready for a more complex narrative that contains a satisfying number of thrills and chills will tear through this book, especially once the action really begins. This is a spooky and enjoyable story for upper middle grade readers.

I received a copy of this book from the author and I chose to leave this review.

To be honest this was my first horror read and I absolutely loved it. And now I'm eager to read more of her works.

The story revolves around Alex, a 12 year old who lived in the a city where living among ghosts was a normal thing. He was a champion in playing ghostball for his school team until he had a car accident, which changed his life forever. After the accident he suffered severe hip injuries but gained a rare power of seeing & hearing ghosts. Not believing in his new ability , he tried to ignore them. But after a malevolent ghost tried to hurt him, he had to accept his psychic powers. In order to get himself rid of the evil spirit, he with the help of his best friend, his cousin and his paranormal investigator Aunt went on the eerie path of solving the mystery behind the bones in the walls.

Will he be able to free the evil spirit?

" No matter what you've done or what you fear, spirit your place to stay is no longer here. Your life & time is now complete.Move into the light that shines before you, then in time you'll be cleansed."

I loved reading this book. Some of the parts were scary and gave me chills but the humour element was what I adored the most. The setup was amazing and I loved how the author explained all the symbols & words she used which pertains to the ghostly world. The characters were well developed and my favourite was Alex's best friend- Jason. He is the person everyone needs as a friend in life. The book is well paced and the narration is good too. The language is easy and understandable.

Definitely Recommended!

On his way to the championship game, Alex and his mother are in a terrible car accident, and he is severely injured. When he wakes up in the hospital, his mother is there holding his hand. They talk briefly, then she gives him her amulet and leaves the room. But later, his father tearfully explains that his mother was killed in the accident. Alex first dismisses it as a dream or delirium from the accident, but then later at home he sees a kindly ghost named Mrs. Wilson, and then the ghost of a former janitor at school. Eventually he is forced to admit that he has somehow gained psychic powers. But, that's not the worst of it! Somehow, he has managed to anger an evil spirit that has attached itself to Alex and neither Alex nor anyone around him is safe.

Set in an alternate reality where ghosts are commonplace and everyone relies on charms and amulets for protection, this is a fun and age-appropriate ghost story. A bit scary and suspenseful at times, but nothing too graphic or overwhelming for most kids aged 9-13. I could have done without the alternate reality, I didn't feel it added anything to the story, but that's probably just a matter of preference. I loved the kindly Mrs. Wilson, who provides somewhat of a surrogate mother figure for Alex.

Received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A middle school story that's like an alternate universe similar to our own except ghosts, spirits, and the Unknown run rampant after an accident years earlier. Alex is an average kid until the fateful car accident that leaves him with psychic abilities, which is supposed to be *rare* in the first place!

I really devoured this in one sitting...it's really entertaining and I love the alternate universe concept. Imagine having to take a class on how to create proper sigils that keep spirits away! The characters were all fleshed out well and felt natural to the story. The dad will REALLY piss you off, though, he gets better.

I was also happy that Alex wasn't that frustrating of a protagonist, he felt very human and I appreciated that he was grieving in his own way and it felt realistic. His friend and cousin were entertaining and it'll be fun to see them fleshed out in later books. Will definitely be keeping up with this spooky series!

Even though it's got horror elements it's got the typical amount as any story with dead people, ha. No adult elements, just the concept of death and the afterlife, for any parents concerned. Typical macabre dark stuff, y'know.

For anyone who loves Cirque Du Freak as much as I do this is up your alley! (No vampires though, just spooky supernatural/horror elements)

Thank you to NetGalley and author Susan McCauley for the ebook copy to read and review.

I really loved the concept of this book, that everyone was living in a world where ghosts are present constantly but only a few see them and that they have to use protective sigils around them so the spirits cannot get to them. It was so original and so innovative.

For me personally I didn’t care for the protagonist he really annoyed me, however I really liked what he could do I liked the speed he learnt it all and overcame everything in his own time. It was fascinating getting to read about him learning to deal with the ghost he’d never seen before and then becoming more powerful than he thought he would would be. It was really cool.

It was a very fun and fascinating horror book, it was written well, it had a lot of education in this field for anyone that’s interested in learning about spirits and ghost hunting. It wasn’t too scary, it had a fun element of mystery behind it having to solve what happened to the spirits and how to remove them.

Overall this book was good fun, and great to read something paranormal with a new take on it.

Alex was a typical middle-schooler until an accident binds him to a wheelchair. When he woke up in the hospital with a mangled leg, he discovers that he could see ghosts. And the first one he saw was his mom, who died in the car crash that broke him.

Though it started off with a human touch, I thought this story was sort of weird. Like Harry Potter going to wizardry school, Alex went to a psychic school, except he wasn’t a psychic (I guess, now he was.) He had classed in Occult History and played a weird sport called GhostBall. What the heck is GhostBall? The author did not explain that at all. Yes, I get that this was something she just made up, but she should’ve at least enlightened us a bit here.

Alex was too whiny and obsessive about the accident and his mom’s death. I didn’t feel that there was much on seeing the ghosts and hunting them. When were we going to get there? It just dawdled way too much. I get that this was a magical story, which I’m certainly into, but this was just too dumb for my taste.

I received an advance reader copy of this book through Net Galley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

When sixth-grader Alex breaks his hip and loses his mother in an auto accident, he gains psychic abilities. In a world a lot like ours where ghosts and malevolent spirits threaten the peace on regular basis, but are often kept at bay by the frequent use of mystical wards and sigils. When the wards and sigils don’t work, the psychics get called in.

Alex is hesitant to acknowledge his new skills, but ends up drawing the attention of a malicious poltergeist and has to rely on his loyal best friend, his paranormal investigator cousin, and a few new acquaintances to help him learn how to use his newfound abilities.

I gave Bones in the Wall five stars on Goodreads. It’s well written, and provides an absolutely perfect amount of scares for its middle grade audience. I’m already well into the second volume of the Ghost Hunters series, Pirates’ Curse.

Bones in the Wall is a great start to Susan McCauley’s series, Ghost Hunters. Readers will be introduced to twelve year old Alex, who has experienced the loss of being able to play sports again and being a normal kid. However, he gains the ability to speak to ghosts and spirits. He finds himself having to find a way to save others from an evil being. I was entertained throughout the story and could not wait to find out how it would all end. It was a really good read.

I am giving Bones in the Wall four and a half stars. I recommend it for readers who are between the ages of eight and fourteen and who enjoy reading ghost and scary stories. I look forward to reading the next book from the Ghost Hunters series, Pirates’ Curse.

I received a paperback copy of Bones in the Wall from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.

The book started off jumping right into the world fully built. I usually prefer world building and lots of groundwork before charging into the plot. But the author did a pretty good job of filling in the holes as I read early enough on that I didn't feel lost as I read. There is a very interesting concept here that sets up the world that Alex lives in. I would love to read more about the history of "the Problem" and the 100+ years that occurs and changes against our own because of it.

The only real frustration I had was with Alex's dad. But I think this is because I very recently read The Owls Have Come to Take us Away by Ronald L. Smith which also contained a fairly unsupportive and gaslighting father. I just wanted to shake his Alex's father through the last half of the book.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bones in the Wall and am eagerly awaiting the next in the series! Alex is a kid who has gone through an unbelievably hard moment in his life, and is struggling with his 'new norm.' Only his new norm happens to be seeing, hearing, and feeling ghosts!

This story was everything I wanted it to be. Supernatural sleuth? Check. Coming of Age story? Check. Spooky moments followed by humor? Check. Fantabulous writing? Double check!

Ghost Hunters Pirates Curse was a great middle-grade YA book about a teen psychic and his latest job involving a pirates curse. I thought the story was really solid. I enjoyed the psychic stuff and loved hearing about the different sigils and charms involved in the business. The characters were well-written and the setting was perfect. New Orleans during a hurricane is a great setting for a spooky pirates tale. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Alex after being in a car accident discovers that he has psychic abilities. The entire community in which he lives uses wards and sigils to keep ghost out of their homes, cars, etc.
Alex once understooding his gift must help with some lost ghost that have not crossed over yet. Alex must accept his powers and learn how it use them

This book is one of those middle grade horror stories much like a combination of Lockwood & Co but sets in the US. So, it’s also a little bit like Goosebumps. I honestly can’t put down the book and finished it in just 2 days! I think the character development and the storytelling are great. It is engaging and fun and scary all at the same time. I just wish the action is more ‘bad-ass’ like Lockwood’s and less ‘exorcist-like’, But overall this is an amazing read and I recommend it if you are a fan of fast-paced ghost stories.

I rated this 4.5/5.

Ghost Hunters: Bones in the wall, follows the story of 12 year old Alex, who was involved in a terrible accident that cost him his future career in sports. After waking up, however, Alex starts to notice that he has gained the ability to talk to ghosts! In the universe Susan McCauley has created, ghosts are no simple fictional creatures, but are common knowledge throughout the world. In this fresh take on a haunted tale, wards against ghosts are common practice and monitored by the government, psychic’s are practically a part of the police department, and 101: on how to prevent a haunting is essentially part of the school curriculum!
This book is an excellent introduction to this new middle grade paranormal series. The characters are entertaining and relatable, and there are heartwarming relationships developed throughout. It is an excellent story for new young readers who want to branch out into the paranormal genre. The ghosts are extremely well written and described, and the development of Alex’s new abilities are very well realised. I honestly had such fun reading this book, I literally could not put it down once I had started, and finished it in one sitting.

Conclusion: I would 100% recommend this book to all ages, not just middle grade. I adored the fresh take on how ghosts are perceived throughout the world. I have honestly not read a book like it before and I cannot wait to pick up the rest of the series!
