'There's a fierce beast in my heart, and the reins are in you hands'
It wasn't my plan to read this novel yet because I was reading SCI at that moment and I only tried the first three chapters to see if I'm going to like it. I didn't expect that I was going to get hooked that early!
This is my very first Unlimited Flow novel that I've read without the 'real death' into it. Yeah, this novel includes survival instances and stuff but the casualty level in those instances is zero. That makes this novel so refreshing.
Our MC, Wu Jin/Little Witch, is one of the most likeable characters I've ever read, in my opinion. He was so energetic and bouncy but gentle and obedient at the same time. I didn't expect that Little Witch could trigger my maternal instinct. Even in the novel, he has more mother fans than girlfriend fans. He was also like a kid who was forced to hold weapons and was thrown in the crowd of rowdy and muscled men. He was an absolute newbie without any knowledge about weapons, guns, tactical maneuver and survival at all, but he was clever af! He was actually considered as the brain of the their team, and there are times when some contestants even 'copied his homework'. I love reading how Little Witch grows little by little. Oh, and I almost forgot! I also love his small curls so much. It was like his curls has its own personality. His curls absolutely defined his moods and it was also some sort of big boss radar LMAO
On the other hand, our ML, Wei Shi, is the definition of a god! He was basically a human weapon and a very overpowered character. But him being an OP character has some twist into it, because he deliberately wasn't showing his real strength. Except for Little Witch, nobody even remembered he existed as a contestant. He has that skill in scouting that can help him hide his presence. He is Little Witch's big boss and a very doting lover. I actually wished a couple of times to have a boyfriend like him. He is not too domineering and what I liked about him the most is he respects and supports Little Witch's decisions so much, especially in those important life situations. He never forced his own choices onto his lover like some typical overbearing partner. He lets Little Witch do whatever he wants but the big boss always make sure that he's right there if anything goes out of control. He helped Little Witch to train but when it comes to the competition, he lets him improve his skills on his own. I really respect his character so much. And did I mention how much he dotes his lover?! Like he sponsored a single elimination round to let Little Witch show the fruit of his efforts, but without abusing his authority at all.
The part that I also loved about this novel aside from the humor is the supporting characters. Little Witch and Wei Shi have a competitive relationship with the other contestants but outside the elimination rounds, they are all good friends. I adore all of their interactions so much! And also, this is the first time I've seen a couple raising a menagerie. Little Witch and Big Boss literally raised a rabbit, a cat, a pterosaur and a flamingo as their pets, and they almost raised an alpaca too (which was a pity they didn't get to own it).
In my opinion, this is a very unique survival novel and it was very worthy of having so many chapters. There are also some twists that you would never expect. I highly recommend this novel so much, especially for those who loved UF novels.
This was such an entertaining, hilarious, and informative book! The elimination rounds were varied and interesting, especially beginning with the tarot card round. I didn't expect to learn so much about the eras leading up to the evolution of dinosaurs or about the drama and politics about major players during during King Louis XIV - King Louis XVI's reign in France.
Wu Jin and Wei Shi definitely made the book better. I loved their relationship and how they grew together. Wu Jin's enthusiasm and fighting spirit and sheer awe of Wei Shi at the beginning was super cute and hilarious. Wei Shi's laidback and hands-off but doting behavior was also super cute and hilarious. I love the POV shifts that go from action! fighting! gunshots! to taking the rabbit out for a walk and getting rid of pests in the way lmao.
The side characters were also great. I loved the White Moonlight family. The overprotective Zoe, the level-headed Wen Lin, and the all-brawns, no brain Caesar made their interactions so fun during the competition. Caesar alone was such a fun character. He had that goofy, muscle-headed older bro type that got along with similar people like a house on fire. The best quote that described him was from his captain: Caesar was a single-celled creature, wasn’t he? What was his girlfriend thinking? Dating an amoeba? lmaooo
In between all of the elimination rounds that can start tiring you out, there's actually plot! And it's so good! All of the foreshadowing came out, and the plot twist was so good! The extras also tied up a lot of loose ends and were pretty fluffy, which I really enjoyed.
Mad respect for the author for the amount of research and effort put into devising the complex games. Great characters, great descriptive writing, smooth integration of various mathematical theories, Tarot card reading, dinosaurs, history and art. A well balanced love story. Brilliant execution.
This book is called "Surprise! The Supposed Talent Show Was Actually–?!" in English.
It took me a couple chapters to really get into this novel. I thought it was going to be a typical quick transmitigation novel, but the arcs were actually quite integrated. They were either mini-logical puzzles, or pieces in the larger, overarching puzzle. Every arc was usually another round of the survival game, with a different theme and sometimes different teams. I feel like the author starts out slowly, setting up the context and main characters. When the author really gets rolling though, the story is amazing.
I loved the book because it was such a fluffy romance, but intellectual at the same time. While I found myself laughing uproariously every couple chapters, the author also manages to tackle some heavy themes. The author covers everything from the ethics of genetics research, to nature vs nurture, to the dark stories behind French royal mistresses, to highlighting obscure facts about fairy tales. I found myself going down more than one wiki-rabbit-hole thanks to the translators and readers' wonderful references.
I also enjoyed how evenly the author handles all the characters. Most of the characters are richly imagined, with more depth than I expected. It was wonderful how we got to watch Wu grow and mature into a strong fighter, but retain his core personality. At the same time, we see Wei slowly show some weaknesses despite being completely overpowered (eg: when we visit his youth). And unlike most gongs, Wei doesn't use his power to pave the way for his lover regardless of his lover's opinion. This is perhaps one of the most mature representations of a relationship that I've seen in a romance. Wei is not condescending, and does not act overbearing. Instead, he respects his lover's desire to stand on his own. His role is not to act for his lover, but to provide a safe haven for Wu to recharge. Because of this, the relationship becomes one of equals rather than one between a leech and a big boss. I also particularly love how most of the side couples are paired up by the end (even the supposed villain!)
Overall, this is a great book to read -- I found it funny and thought-provoking and educational and gripping. It has one of the most healthy depictions of love I've seen in these types of books. Unfortunately, most of the wonder will be in the first read, I'm not sure it's as entrancing upon a re-read; but then again, few mystery-based books are.

It's been a while since I read a book this long, which is why I took longer than I normally would to finish it. Even though this book is 3000+ pages long, I enjoyed it so much. It's such a fun and hilarious story with some really lovable characters.
I love Wu Jin (MC), he's actually my son. I'm just like all his mama fans, rooting for him as he leveled up in the Crosson program. The development of the story through the Crosson program was impressive and it's clear that the author put in a lot of research in order to write all these different instances. Every instance was different and incorporated so much information, some of which I even had to search up in Google because I couldn't imagine the scene otherwise. The plot and pacing are solid and I don't have any complaints about either. Like initially I thought this was a unlimited flow/transmigration story but that subplot involving WJ's background was kind of a surprise but it also explained a lot of things about WJ and his relationship with WS.
It was truly a fun experience reading about all the team battles and worlds created by the author, and the plot was also vital to the development of the characters as they experienced wins and losses.
I also really like Wei Shi (ML) and how doting and supoortive he is of WJ. Even before his emotional locks were removed, he was always supporting WJ whether directly or indirectly. And although they were 7 years apart, WS treated WJ as his equal and they had a healthy relationship built on respect, understanding and trust. I loved the development of their relationship a lot and WS was much more romantic than I thought he would be. Through this relationship, they both grew and changed as individuals and also due to each other's influence. Once they officially got together and eventually married, they were so sweet and cute, like I didn't mind eating dog food BECAUSE it was them.
Not only that, I really liked the supporting characters too: the White Moonlight team members consisting of Zoe, Caesar and Wen Lin, the Floating City characters consisting of Red, Researcher Song, Mao Dongqing and Zhou Nan, and others such as Wei Yan, Ming Yao, Zuo Botang, Thin Fire and even Shao Yu. All of them had significant screen times and some of them even became a couple towards the end of the story, which I was happy about because most authors don't bother with creating side couples. They all had their own distinct characteristics which helped to enrich and enliven the story, and their interactions definitely added a lot of humour to the story. And there were a lot of crack-ish scenes in the novel that made me literally burst into laughter, especially scenes that involved Caesar and Red, those two were so chaotic all the time.
I also really liked the found family trope in this story because WJ started out alone but by the end of the story, he had a family and a big supportive group of friends. This was such a wholesome story honestly, and I was glad with how the author gave every character a happy ending.
The only thing that I was meh about is how frequently the author described WJ as a little rabbit or him having a milky smell. LMAO I definitely needed some time to get used to it, not gonna lie. It was just so ??? like I was baffled. Usually, one would use those descriptions for animals or babies, not 19 year olds. But then again, these descriptions mostly showed up through WS's thoughts so.. heh.

——“I said it before, even a monkey can kill people with this gun. This gun has an automatic aiming function, and I pulled the trigger for you.”
——“Big brother, what was my role, then! ”
——“You are the monkey.”
I thought that this was just a survival show unlimited flow type novel, I did not expect the plot to be like this. I ended up having to max out my brain cells once again *sigh. I feel like this should definitely have a sci-fi tag okay?
Little Witch is the cutest! If I got transmitted into this novel then I would be one of Little Witches mama fans! \(´,,•ω•,,`)♡ Sometimes Little Witch annoys me by being to nice! He turned from being the weakest to one of the strongest, I'm not sure if that's called character development or if that's just cuz Lil Witch was made to OP. Also his curls depict his mood, so if you're ever confused(which I doubt you'll be) just look at his soft, fluffy curls\(¯▽¯)/
Wei Shi was OP from start to finish, he's strong and smart(plus he's hot!!) They mention multiple times that Little Witch is smart af but, during the Crosson Show, most of the time it was Wei Shi guiding Little Witch from behind the scenes and giving him clues. The author made Little Witch more and more OP with each passing minute, by downgrading Wei Shi relentlessly. At the start, Wei Shi could practically kill Lil Witch with a flick of his wrists but at the end, White Moonlight(Lil Witches team) was said to have defeated the Floating City team(Wei Shi's team) in the Azure Competition. To be fair it was a team battle, not 1v1, but... Yeah
From start to finish, I don't think that the author ever even showed us even the tip of the peak of Wei Shi's strength. The reason why? It was because Wei Shi kept respecting all of Little Witches requests and desires, Little Witch wanted to stand on his own two feet, without relying on Wei Shi's power, wealth or fame. So, there was no need for Wei shi to show his true strength.
I WANT MORE JINGYI DOUBLE CP SCREENTIME AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH show more of my JingYi double CP pls (ಥ﹏ಥ) ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I repeat, Zuo Botang and Ming Yao need more screentime ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Speaking of screentime, where my Zoe x Wen Lin side, side ship??????????? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Zoe being the overprotective mama and Wen Lin being the father that allows you to indulge in sweet romance. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (╥﹏╥)
Anywho, I love EVERY CHARACTER in this novel(even Shao Yu)!!!!! At least, I think I like every character??? Speaking of Shao Yu, him being a teacher was a great redemption and why do I ship him with that level S guy???????? 😂🤣😂🤣🤣😂
Caesar x Mao Qiukui(Red) whennnnnn??? 😂🤣🤣 We could even try Caesar x Thin Fire too 🤣🤣🤣
Mao Dongqing x Little Orange when?????
I kinda wanna see more of Wei yan, Qin Jinbao etc but you I guess you can't have everything
(Secretary Qu in the AU extra would be me ngl UnU)

I would go so far to say that this novel deserves to be up there with [The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation] and [The Husky and His White Cat Shizun] in terms of recognition of excellence. It started off by getting me to lower my guard and even making me a little disdainful by upfrontedly combining isekai, futuristic sci-fi, entertainment circle, and battle royale into one seemingly clunky and trope-y story, but then it cheerfully blind-sided me with outstanding worldbuilding, a fascinating main plot aided by equally exciting subplots, and then smacked me with a plot-twist so good, I had to put my phone down and do a lap around my room.
Usually, I don't like plot-twists, because in recent years writers have churned them out by just laying entirely false trails and then pulling the rug from under you by revealing that the truth was actually something they didn't hint at at all and made up just so no one could see it coming. In this story, though, the clues are actually there, but you don't realize there's a mystery to solve until the scene where all those clues come together and turn a fact the reader accepted at face-value on its head.
I don't know how to explain without writing a 20k-word thesis how this story is just leaps ahead of so many of its contempories in the genres it fits into. East Asian webnovels are like Spanish telenovelas in terms of exaggerated characterization, outlandish plots, and cartoonish conflicts. Tropes are often not just loose framework for their stories but central structual support that readers have to lean into suspended-disbelief for or else they'll realize that what their reading sounds like a script from an alien that's still learning how humans behave in reality. And yet despite grabbing onto multiple tropes that could have clashed horribly had it been any other webnovel, Surprise! delivers a fleshed-out story you would never think possible when picking up a silly, feel-good BL.
I would give this 5 stars if it didn't have the common problem I find in East Asian webnovels -- the lack of setting development. Despite how much I love this, it still has the prevalent quirk of just . . . not giving much detail about what's around the characters. Rooms feel too empty, spaces feel too open and unoccupied, everywhere feels like like the color has been drained out. Granted, this novel does a much better job of adding details to the background than others in the same category, but it's giving me minialism when I want maximalism. Rather than reading a book, it feels more like watching scenes of a play being staged with far too little background props. The author clearly did so much research and outlining; it's a shame not enough of that attention went into scene descriptions.
Amazingly entertaining and surprisingly heart-warming read that really helps focus on the growth of the main character as a person and with the love interest. No spoilers, but I was a little hesitant to read it considering that the synopsis made it out to be some isekai story, but everything is worked out and explained in the end.
The sci-fi aspect of the novel was written well and helped me imagine every little aspect of the world that Yan BaiBai envisioned. The "instances" of each stage in the survival show were wonderfully complex and were all explained well. I did not feel confused for a second and was even able to learn much about the different subjects covered by the novel as it inspired me to research on my own.
Though I will say that if the main character and love interest's stereotypical character traits bother you, you might not be able to enjoy the novel as much. Despite this, the reasons given for their particular personalities are explained a bit later into the novel, especially for the main character. I personally enjoyed their personalities and dynamic, even if it feels a little cliché. Other than that, the two felt generally well-rounded and distinctly human with the struggles both go through.
My only real complaint is that there isn't more for me to read, especially of the side characters. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this read and I will definitely be rereading this.
I made a Goodreads account simply to give this novel a five star rating. Words simply cannot describe how well-written and elaborate this novel is. Maybe I’m biased, but you don’t get novels like this everyday. Not only is the plot well-researched and exciting, none of the side characters are any less than perfect. You literally fall in love with how well the characters interact with each other and how smart the main character has to be to escape and survive so many scenarios. I have an aversion to MCs that exist righteously and kindly because many times that’s all there is to their character, but Wu Jin is so three-dimensional and so human that it’s hard not to root for him during the entire novel. It’s hard not to be put on your toes, breathing hard, clenching your teeth to the absolute thrill and exhilaration you feel when he succeeds—when any character succeeds. My heart is pumping right now just thinking of this novel. Truly a piece of literature that is for the thrill-seekers and adventure nuts. Please give this a try! Totally worth more than five stars.
I enjoyed this a lot. The translation was excellent, able to explain a lot of technical, scientific and military terms smoothly. I love both main characters, especially Little Witch. The side characters are hilarious, including the ever-growing pet collection. The survival games were fun and it was great to have a main character who had both brains and brawn, though the brawn was developed slowly over time. The twist was also excellent, explained a lot of things about the circumstances of the plot.
Weak-to-strong protag with well written progression arcs (even by the end, MC is never truly OP like the ML is). The puzzles in each round are well researched and cleverly written. My favorite arc was the dinosaur one. The side characters really shine and I often found myself wanting more content of the side CPs. MC starts with that helpless, soft bunny, ML does everything for them characterizations, but grows out of that over time so I was never annoyed by it. Really wished the little pterosaur got more screen time.
I expected a comedic adventure as boy band trainee Wu Jin figures out how to compete in futuristic survival games, and I did get that. What I didn't expect was how cute and fluffy (sometimes literally) the story was too. Wu Jin is adorable. His relationship with Wei Shi is adorable. His bunny is adorable. Aahhhh! I also really liked the intermittent input from the fan forums, and the Crosson Show's obsession with advertising absolutely anything it could, which kept the survival show elements fresh. The combat and action scenes were really well written too.
pros: honestly great characters (both main characters and side characters), pretty good plot and a good balance between plot and romance, pretty good later plot twists and explanations for why the mc transmigrated, sweet extras and nice relationship dynamic, nice character development to see
cons: age gap (wu jin 19, wei shi 27), a bit too long for my personal taste where the instances got a bit exhausting to read
Finally finished after 2 months? Like it but I'm just in for the CP. Main CP, side CP, gay CP or straight CP, just gimme all of themmmm! Wanna know more about jingyi, caesar and that female instructor tho.. what happened to her fiance a.k.a bff turn fiance???
The story is not repetitive, good. So many game arc.. some people will like it, some people will not. I am the latter. Like i said, I'm just in for the CP.
This novel is not bad at all and the characters are really great. There’s just something about how easy it is to get bored reading this story. Like I don’t shy away from hundreds of chapters and arcs- but this was a first for me where I struggled so much to keep reading.
The story become so bland and repetitive and before you can enjoy any kind of character interaction or growth, your fast forward and back into another puzzle. It’s interesting the first two times, but by the 3rd time you’re kind of over it.
The main story is so deeply hidden between game arcs that you kind of lose interest in the main characters. There’s no consistent feeling of wanting to keep reading.
I tried my level best to finish this but 2 months down the line and a meagre 3 chapters per night, still couldn’t drive me to see Little Witch’s end.
Maybe in future I may pick it up to finish the last 70 chapters.
Still one of my favorites. The idea is super unique and bothe the MC and ML are adorable. The absolute best thing about the entire story though, is the world-building. The different challenges are intense, fun to figure out, and lead you into the new modern world the protagonist has found himself in while also keeping a very grounded sense humanity (also the dinosaurs, I adore the dinosaurs).
