Awakening: Book One

Rate this book
Alora Dennison is an orphaned child from a shamed bloodline, surviving in her family's old pack.

On the dawn of her transition pushing her into adulthood, in an unexpected turn of fate, she imprints on the mate she will be bonded to for eternity. Only he isn't the man of her dreams. He is the only one in the entire state she would never have wanted to bond to.

Colton Santo is the arrogant, dominant son of the Alpha from a rival pack, which is set to unite the packs and reign in one kingdom. In years gone by, his disdain for her and any from her bloodline has been prominent. Her treatment by his pack has pushed her to live in near isolation, fearful for her existence. And now, on the dawn of her awakening, before all those assembled, they see her imprint on their future leader.

Fate has decreed it, but everyone around her is about to try and stop it. Fate isn't about to make it easy on her either, as a long-forgotten war erupts in their lands, bringing an age-old enemy with a thirst for blood back into the forefront of Lycanthrope life.

Will she survive long enough to ever find out why she has borne a black mark on her lineage her entire life? And why Colton's father is so eager to see her dead.

Will Colton step up and honor the bond, or will he be the one to deliver the final blow?

Might be the worse couple in book history

This is going to be a long review. I'm giving this a 3 stars because when it's all said and done, I had to finish the story and see the outcome, color me intrigued I just had to know! Now I can honestly say I did not like this book, it's a book written in-depth of everything and nothing at the same time! and that's pretty much why is a long book, some might actually like this, I on the other hand did not. It was way to much crap I just didn't really care for, and was really unnecessary. I was skimming through the ridiculous amounts of information begging for us to get to the God damn point. Another issue are the characters, I cared for none of them, not the main, supportive, none we're even worth reading about. Our fmc is a dimwit, I didn't think I could physically loathe a character as much as I did with her. Every other page is of her freaking out, nauseous, stomach in knots, self loathing, feeling sick, crying! And just down right dramatic. She imprints on the alphas son and future alpha Colton, these two are the worse couple in book history, and I've read over a thousand books. Colton is the saddest soon to be alpha with whiplash of wanting aloha, and not on every other page to please his daddy. There was nothing appealing at the way he treated aloha, and I honestly think he was irredeemable with the head games he played. I really couldn't stand the guy, and it had its affects on aloha, nothing like ur true mate wanting you one min, then the next he's telling you he's gotta be with another women! It was pretty much the whole book! And the times he did want seemed because he thought she might have strong powers instead of wanting her for just her. Now even though we can see why our fmc is a sobbing mess, I think what was really the kicker is that she plays doormat each and every time, gets hurt once again, says she's gonna be strong, and does the same song and dance once again! I'm sorry but the author doesn't even try to make aloha strong in any sense, she creates a whiney, cry baby, I'm just a reject, sorry for herself all around loser with no self preservation to become more! Too show them she's strong, it's a sad long read of just the most ridiculous love story ever! I also hated how when something of importance was explained to her she was like no, that's not true, I kept saying "shit up already" Jesus just listen! Stop being freaking annoying. Now I want to mention something that bothered me deeply, now I know the author didn't mean for it to read the way it did, but meadow speaks Spanish words, and she's kinda a badass, strong character who owns it, and in one sentence aloha says how "she's so hood" and I gotta ask, where the hell did that comment come from? And why is she hood? Because she's a Latin Spanish speaking women? not gonna lie but it kinda read stereotypical. With all this it should have been a one star, but I'm giving it a three since it was still engaging enough for me to hold on for a outcome, left on cliffhanger, but I wasn't impressed, won't move on to next book

Too wordy...

This was a painful skipped readings just to finish. Didn't care for the mc being mistreated and the h having a girlfriend whom he chose at first. The mc was poor, weak, abused, alienated, and alone supposedly with no friends. The writing was hard to follow with too much information dumped at every page and a lot of telling and not enough showing. If the mc was shown stronger and not degraded or rejected that didn't stick, with less information details about the characters self dialogue and the surrounding and instead show characters development earlier than at the end, this could be a great book. Editing might be needed maybe.

1 and some change.
I had to force myself to finish it.
I couldn't connect with any of the characters. Spice is non-existent for those who care.
For new readers, there's a descriptive, painful, first turn that goes on for awhile for whatever reason, and descriptive SA by the "mate/love interest", for a specific reason, but thought you should know(also goes on for awhile). Don't remember a TW.
This reminded me of why I don't like reading books with young FMC. They believe themselves to be mature and adult but are constantly proving that they, in fact, aren't. Don't get me wrong, there are some books out there that are a bit realistic in how they portray 18-20 year olds, but this isn't one of them. It felt like a grown person writing a severely "hormonal" female lead that is surrounded by yes-men. Could tell me Alora is a severely spoiled 14 year old emotionally/mentally, and I'd believe you.
Don't get me started on how badly it was arranged, either. It's on a pay-to-read app(Tapon), and it doesn't appear to have been edited other than to insert chapter images that are only there for pause. Not thematically because it immediately just gets back into it as if there wasn't any sort of pause, but mostly to cut runoff conversations/paragraphs/scenes. I could think of a few places where a pause would've been thematically good, but they were nowhere in sight.
Anyways.
The FMC started out fine, a typical sad girl with tragic backstory, so it was a bit understandable in her constant need to cry... 😒
However, as the story progresses, SHE believes herself to be stronger/tougher/doesn't need a man, and yet... almost on every other page, there's a paragraph of how she feels like crying or throwing up(?) or can't forgive/forget him. I'm not joking, I have them tagged, and it's more frequent as the story progresses. Which is horrible because at some point, in this 400+ page book, she's supposed to come into herself. She doesn't. She believes she has, but as a reader, we get insight into her emotions and thoughts, and they have only gotten worse and more childish.
Her inability to just TALK is absolutely astounding. She has a habit of assuming absolutely everything and being horrible to those around her, and then when finding out the truth, she ONCE AGAIN feels like crying/throwing up or becoming so childishly infuriated that she ONCE AGAIN takes it out on anyone around her.
I've seen her seriously apologize once.
Just the one.
And it was because she, unsurprisingly, assumed something, and instead of asking or talking about it initially, she got gross.
The worst part is she realizes she's being "hormonal"... I'd say a bitch, but it doesn't stop her nor prevent her from ultimately taking it out on someone eventually. There are many notes and highlights where I wrote "this isn't about you shuuut uuuuupppp" for this very reason. She's also gets into the habit of comparing herself and at one point compares her and Cole's relationship with someone else's. Someone that did something absolutely horrible to their mate and thinks that Cole did the same to her and gets ONCE AGAIN in her feelings and takes it out on him. When...???? What he did is absolutely nothing compared to what the other did. Other than THAT.
I get it, Cole was a constant hot and cold, seeking approval from his father, and was willing to drop her for the good of the pack. However, again, she found out the truth, saw how genuinely horrible and hard that decision was, said she understood even tho it hurt, and didn't blame him. Can ya guess what she did... of course, AFTER wanting to cry and throw up and taking it out on someone around her? She blamed him for absolutely EVERYTHING and... AGAIN... instead of talking it out/ASKING, she assumed and became insufferable.
Something happens where Cole asks her to give him a minute to process THIS VERY SERIOUS LIFE CHANGING THING, and she basically says, "F that. You don't get your time. I don't like you being silent."
HUUUUHHHH?!
She wanted and got her time, but apparently, he isn't allowed that. We see some growth in Cole, but not Alora. Who we're supposed to be rooting for.
Also, Meds...Mads.. whatever, just seemed very stereotypical. Specifically, the "loud latina bff that's always cursing" stereotype. It's weird. It makes me feel icky and cringe, especially when Alora starts saying "skanky puta" because she heard it from her the first time they met??? I don't have to be latina to feel this way, but I am, and it's hitting something in the brain.
Absolutely returning this. I don't understand the high praise, but to each their own.

Tl;dr
No. Extremely childish FMC.
Writing is not great, and whole ass "chapters" felt like filler. A lot of them did.
Only reason it got any stars is because the plot and world could've been amazing in a more polished series, but because of how it's written/arranged it all feels like an info dump without actually informing you of anything and the FMC is insufferable.

That wasn't what I was expecting! In a good way! It was empowering, sad, happy, angsty, magical, lovely, filled with anger and hatred, and so much more.

This book was really great! It did have a lot of typos and grammatical errors, and it did have a lot of filler in it, but I loved it! Parts were predictable, and others you couldn't see coming.

The storyline was awesome, and a bit different from other wolf/shifter books that I have read!

The main characters Colton and Alora were great. Both were really well rounded characters, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. They got a bit annoying in times of their woes, but that's to be expected!

I hope we get more of the sub-pack in the next book, because there are some real legends in that group!

Definitely worth a read if you love shifter books!

Good read

I liked this book a lot! I read it in like 24 hrs I was soo hooked. The only thing I would say is that although the fmc is supposed to be this strong female character as reiterated in the book, she comes off as yet another weak, low confidence, low self esteem female because of her internal thoughts of herself, her situation and of course all the crying. I felt like she cried in every chapter. She seemed to lack a lot of control over her emotions which completely goes against the strong female narrative. I really want would love to see her become that in the next book!

This was a rare DNF for me...I skimmed through to the end, but even with just skimming I found it wordy, and unnecessarily so. I felt like the long paragraphs were very repetitive, especially when it came to Alora’s internal thought process of do I/don’t I when it comes to Colton. She also came across as weak and whiny, even after her “growth.” I think the storyline itself had potential, it was just hard to get past the wordiness for me. I also had trouble connecting to the characters, they came across as flat and immature.

Oh my gosh, this book gave me a major headache while reading it, then realizing there's book 2 that will continue their story, Huhhuh Nooo wayyy, I'm totally washed out by that mindless writing.

I have to admit this book was different from the other shifter novels, as it has that FAE related stories' vibe, where there's a major villain behind everything and the heroine is the One who'll be their 'Savior, who's more powerful than anyone' and all that stuff. But yeah, the storyline was unique, has a depth to it and I would say it was engrossing too, if not for that writing.
I think this book was the first time where I took about a week to finish. Cuz that writing damn, it was so messy, so excruciating to get through each chapter. Again, the plot was decent but it kept on dragging with absolute word vomit. It's like the author thought if the book was long, and filled with lengthy inner monologue, repeated descriptive observations that it would be impressive. But how completely wrong she was, if the book could have reduced by atleast 100 pages, it would have been better. Especially that betrayal accusation heroine kept on dragging throughout the book without any solid backup was there for nothing, but for utter crap of drama, cuz it's so obvious that that was not the case, but it was dragged until the last chapter. Phew!

So the story's about a 18yr old girl named Alora, who along other few teenagers were deemed and shunned as cursed rejects by their pack, goes through her awakening process where she turns into her wolf form for the first time & learns that her wolf was different from others, but it didn't stop there as she mate bonds with the mighty Alpha's son Colton, and her entire life and what she knew so far completely changes from that moment onward.
Alora, who was shy, naive, subjugated by their pack was in for one wild ride, where she was instantly hated by their alpha Juan Santo but his son, her mate instantly falls for her despite him having a gf, such powerful and irresistible was their mate bond. But odds were stacked against them and fates play a major role in their lives, where they have to find their inner strength and grow into the person they were born to be for them to be together.

▪️Alora, seemed like a character who grew from meek, feeble girl into a strong willed, compelling woman who learns that she has immense potential with which she could make a change. But just because of that rueful writing I couldn't like or appreciate her.

▪️Colton, was a nice, warm hearted person despite him presenting a cold, arrogant appearance. But he was such a daddy's little boy who wants his approval and hence appears weak and take stupid decisions but yes, finally he grows into his own alpha man.

▪️Also this book is in a dire need of some major editing.

Overall this was a book I desperately wanted to finish, not because the story was great or anything, it's just that I'm stubborn and stupid like that sometimes even when the book makes you want to 'bang your head against something hard' 😉. But here I am, as I successfully completed book 1 against all odds and promising myself to abstain from book 2.

Great Story- Needs a new editor

Excellent plot line. Author makes a few contradicting plot points and the timeline gets foggy in some places. There are a terrible amount of editing mistakes regarding run-on sentences. This makes it a little bit challenging to overlook and enjoy as a whole.

Disregarding the grammatical errors and editing mistakes this is a great novel that sets up what I’m sure to be an interesting series. I do wish we got some insight in this novel to Colton’s character development from his point of view. The book is told from the narration of our protagonist/main character Alora.

*****Spoiler alert*****
In order for Alora to truly forgive Colton at the end of the novel I feel as though we as the reader should have been given chapters from the point of view of each of them while they were separated. As a reader I expected to get Colton’s point of view after Alora ran, I wanted to see his character development too. Especially to root for them as a couple.

Overall I did very much enjoy the story and could barely put it down once I started it. I looks forward to reading the next book in the series to understand some loose ends not yet tied up.

I was brought to this book because I watched the shorts drama based on this novel. I could not understand why the drama ended the way it did. I ran to find the novel and realized it was part of a series. I’ve always preferred the books to the movie or tv counterparts. As I watched the shorts drama in full first I imagined the characters as the actors. I was fully immersed in the twists of this story and given small details about characters left out or not given as much of a role in the drama.

I LOVED THE STORYLINE!
I really loved the book however, there was alot about it that I didn't like. Each book is entirely too long. There's too much repetition and the inner monologue drags on and on. This series wouldn't have been nearly as long if the editor would've cut out alot of the useless information. It really made the book drag on. It took me 3 days to read the series, but, I did like the story. At times I was crying hard and at times I was laughing. I loved the characters but I think Meadow is my favorite. She's a sassy little spitfire that isn't afraid to speak her mind. Carmen's character was the type you love to hate and hate to love. She's tough but she's like the bossy stuck up cheerleader I hated in school. She's suffered through alot and at times I did feel sorry for her. I loved Alora's strength but I hated how the Author drug out her learning to use her gifts and a just to her new life. Colton is a strong alpha but he is too afraid to stand up to his father and ends up chasing Alora away, breaking both their hearts but something good does come out of it. At times the suspense is so intense and so exciting. It was fun getting to know all the characters but there are some I'd liked to have gotten to know more about and were more involved. There is just the right amount of angst and fantasy. I enjoyed the ending but I would've liked for alittle more on life after the twins are born. I do recommend this book but prepare for a long drawn out read.

Now I should start off saying shifter books are my guilty pleasure; I blooming love them, so obviously if they’re not your thing you may not feel the same.
This was different from most shifter stories that I’ve read in the past, and that’s absolutely a good thing. The storyline was really interesting and some parts were actually really surprising too.. I don’t mean that condescendingly; it’s just that I’ve found a lot of shifter books tend to have the same narrative, and it gets old. This one was refreshing and quite captivating. I wasn’t really a big fan of the two main characters.. I wanted to give them both a shake.. but they begun to redeem themselves in the latter half. I’m holding out for the second book before I pass too much judgement on them. One thing I do want to say is that there was a lot of spelling mistakes, typos, grammatical errors and also just incorrect sayings such as “full proof” instead of ‘fool proof’ which is a shame, because other parts of it were so well written. I also felt a little disappointment when the author dipped into certain stereotypes. But over all I enjoyed this book and I’m waiting (a little impatiently) for book 2.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it

I actually started this book last year, but gave up. For some reason I decided to pick it back up. I think the story had a lot of potential, I just had a hard time connecting to any of the characters. While they do have the typical wolf shifter hierarchical structure, this story has a bit of a departure from that. There is "the pack" and within the pack there are "sub-packs" each with their own alpha and beta. Personally, I would think having that many alphas in a single pack would have some serious infighting.

This is another FMC that I just wanted to slap. She felt like a bobber just floating along with the tide. I will give her props though for having the courage to run away. I'll be honest and say that the rejection scene really did kinda shred my heart.

In some ways the story just crept along and probably could have been condensed more with a good editor. If someone asked me for a recommendation, I would say, "it's ok."

2.5 ⭐️ rounded down to 2⭐️ because giving it a 3 would be misleading on my part.

The book is interesting enough for me to want to read the second book as the premise is interesting.

What I don’t appreciate is how much time was spent describing the FMCs inner monologue in between external dialogue. This made it hard to remember what was actually being discussed and threw me in for a loop as I had to go back a couple of pages and remind myself what was being talked about.

Another thing I didn’t appreciate was the way the Santo pack was stereotyped. Yes they are Latino and in trying to be inclusive and bringing in racial inclusivity, it wasn’t well executed and had the opposite effect.

DNF %30

Excessive and repetitive inner dialogues. Over explaining EVERYTHING. Mc constantly crying, crumbling down on a touch. MMC is a coward, a joke really. He has no redeeming qualities, just as whinny little daddy’s boy. I guess their actions kinda matches their ages, which is why I usually prefer to read books with mature MCs.

Despite everything i hated about this book, It gets a solid 2.5 ⭐️ because of the initial sihfting and imprinting scenes. They were executed brilliantly and portrayed the core conflicting pain of Alora meeting her wolf for the first time and getting rejected just as she’s found her soul-fated connection.

Great story but...

I absolutely loved this story. The plot was well thought out and was consistently good. There were no parts that felt dull or felt like it was added for fill. However, the amount of spelling and grammar errors made me have to double read a lot of sentences because they wouldn’t make sense initially. I’m still looking forward for Book 2 because I’m invested in the story line at this point. Hopefully, the next book(s) will be reviewed for grammar and spelling errors.

Pretty good character development over shadowed by poor editing

The author does a good job of investing in the characters of the story. The plot keeps your interest. The downside is the poor grammar and multiple typos, which often cause delays in reading, as the reader has to stop and figure out what the sentence is trying to say. There is some lack of attention to detail that is annoying. For example, the bear the heroine tangles with is initially identified as a black bear, and in just a few sentences later is referred to as a grizzly bear.

1,5 * I didn't connect to any of the characters and consequently didn't care what happened to them. By the half of the book I was bored by the internal monologue of Alora, because she repeated herself so much. I felt like the author just wrote the same things over and over again to fill out the book. And also Alora is quite dense in order to prolong the conflict, which I didn't enjoy.
However the plot of the book was interesting and I would like the book more if the focus was on it and not on Alora's repetitive feelings.

I listened to this on FreeFM app that I pay yearly for (you can listen for free while watching ads too). I’m never looking for anything great when listening to audiobooks, just something to listen to when I’m cleaning or in the car and can’t physically read. This app is the best I found so far for this because I can switch from reading to listening and it has the best set up price wise. All that being said, I’m not looking for the best book I’ve ever read just something to pass the time, but this was pleasantly surprising. I really enjoyed this story and recommend it.

A good start

Was a huge of this author with the Carrero series, was a bit surprised with the change of genre. But it worked, i had trouble putting it down. Some unique differences with the wolves, it took a while to get used to, especially with their ages, they don't live much longer than humans compared to other paranormal books and their wolf size! Blummin massive lol.
The scene is now set for an explosive series and can't wait to get the next one

Loved it

The storyline & characters were brilliantly written.

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read the next in the series. I noticed was there were a few grammar and punctuation mistakes, which occasionally ruined the flow of the book for me, but overall I didn’t really mind too much. Could definitely do with some proper editing, to make the whole of the complete. Still loved it though! 😁

If you like supernatural books roller-coaster lives, twists, turns, love hate, heartbreak and wtf moments this book is for you.
Thrown together by the fates An alpha heir and an outcast shunned by the pack seemingly because her family failed in the war but things are not all what they seem.

3.75-4 stars.

Stumbled upon this book on tiktok and I was apprehensive at first since tiktok recommendations are a hit or miss. But this one’s good! It can be a bit draggy at some parts of the story and minus points for not being dual POVs. I love when they have the pov of the mmc but this one doesn’t unfortunately.

Overall, story was really interesting. A lot of plot to it and questions. Kept me on the edge and I couldn’t put this book down. Not bad for a werewolf fantasy romance.

Good story line but.....

So wordy, if you’re not a fan of obsessive, and potentially redundant inner monologue, then this is for you... I skipped a lot of the inner stuff, and focused on the story line. The story has great promise and can’t wait for the next to see what happens! I just hope it’s a little less inner and more outer!

DNF at 85%

Narrated in Single POV (female).

The book had nice plot and interesting theories but its unnecessary long length was its huge -ve point as it made it difficult to finish it.

I tried really hard to finish reading it but couldn't. If it would've been short in length it could've been much better.

Good Story

This a good story. The plot is great but there is so much unnecessary parts that it almost made me DNF it. I’m afraid to read part two because I’m dreading the drawn out mess of unnecessary words that will be included but equally excited to see what happens. It’s honestly a great story just be read for it to be drawn out.
