De twintigjarige Aaron spendeert zijn zomer thuis. Hij moet voor zijn herexamens studeren, maar heeft andere dingen aan het hoofd. Hij worstelt met zijn gevoelens en begrijpt zichzelf niet. In de geborgenheid van zijn kamer lijkt hij geen antwoorden te vinden, en zijn superheldenstrips helpen hem niet langer om te ontsnappen aan de dagelijkse onrust. Wanneer hij beslist om naar buiten te gaan, verandert zijn innerlijke worsteling in een maalstroom. Hij ontdekt wat hij ontkent, en ontkent wat hij ontdekt.

Ben Gijsemans maakte (ondertussen al 7 jaar geleden) veel indruk bij mij met zijn debuut ‘Hubert’. Hij presenteert met deze ‘Aaron’ het tweede deel van wat een trilogie moet worden over “met zichzelf worstelende individuen die zich door persoonlijke kwesties moeilijk met hun omgeving kunnen verbinden en zich, in een poging hun dagelijkse onrust verteerbaarder te maken, storten op escapisme”.
Het is trage lectuur, er gebeurt niet veel, soms gebeurt er niks op de pagina’s. Maar ondertussen voel je als lezer steeds harder de onrust die onder Aarons huid borrelt. Het trage tempo zorgt ervoor dat je als lezer medeleven krijgt, hoe ongemakkelijk je je ook voelt bij hetgeen we te lezen krijgen. Het leest een beetje als een auteursfilm waarbij één stilstaande camera alles zeer natuurlijk vastlegt. Het leven zoals het is...
Tussendoor krijg je pagina’s uit Aarons nostalgische superhelden-strips voorgeschoteld. Ik snap de bedoeling hiervan maar voor mij kwamen die pagina’s op den duur wat als tijd -en bladverspilling over, hoe vaardig de auteur ook is in het nabootsen van dergelijke oude comics. Ik zie mezelf deze bij een herlezing overslaan.
Gijsemans etaleert opnieuw een enorm grafisch talent. Zijn 2 beeldverhalen (en waarschijnlijk ook zijn volgende) maken je niet happy maar persoonlijk hou ik wel enorm van kunst die diep snijdt (zoals het leven vaak ook geen pretje is).

Een traag verhaal – geregeld verschilt het beeld amper van het vorige – maar stilaan dringt het bij de lezer én de hoofdpersoon door dat zijn verliefdheid onmogelijk is. Ook de superhelden in zijn comics kunnen hem niet te hulp snellen.
Prachtig en consequent opgebouwd. De monotone bladspiegel en zachte tinten, afgewisseld met fellere kleuren voor de fragmenten uit de superheldencomics, dwongen me naar de details te kijken.

Wist me niet echt te overtuigen, al was ik wel fan van de realistische acties en dialogen. Er waren desalniettemin iets te veel kleine dingetjes waaraan ik mij stoorde.

Dès les premières cases, on pressent la gravité du sujet, le drame larvé qui se dévoile au compte-goutte et étreint le lecteur autant que le personnage d'Aaron – profondément seul et désemparé, attachant. Le malaise augmente au fil du récit, dont le rythme singulier (répétitif et lent, inexorable) illustre parfaitement le cheminement intérieur du protagoniste.
Le dessin sensible et détaillé, le choix de couleurs délicates, presque délavées, et l'insertion de pages de comics aux intrigues simplistes et interchangeables, permettent une certaine distanciation – on est glacé mais aussi touché et peiné pour ce garçon tourmenté qu'on aimerait secourir.

An unexpected way to talk about an unexpected topic.

I'm not sure how to talk about this book. On one hand, it's probably best read going in cold. But it's also definitely a book that needs a trigger warning..

I'll just beat around the bush and say that it deals with a very (and, in a way, rightfully so) stigmatised mental disorder that rarely gets talked about.

It does so by trying to humanize the main character, who slowly discovers that he suffers from said disorder, and has to deal with the psychological ramifications of that realisation

It's truly slice of life. Most of the book is just him hanging out, studying for his exams and reading comics. And it's weirdly compelling

The art is gorgeous. I'm not sure how to define it. It's got kind of a Chris Ware thing going on, but leaning more towards realistic characters. There's also sequences emulating golden age comics interspersed that break up both the narrative and the esthetic

A fascinating book through and through, that I had to sit with and talk about with people more knowledgeable than me to fully realize how important it truly is

An introverted young man spends his summer living with his parents, preparing to resit some exams. At first that seems to be all there is to this comic, but gradually it becomes apparent that below its mundane surface, the titular protagonist is going through grave mental torment.

The storytelling is incredibly powerful, calling to mind the likes of Chris Ware, Nick Drnaso and Seth in its ability to communicate monotony, ennui, angst, loneliness and self-loathing. Despite not much actually happening, the whole thing is electric with tension, imparted deftly through repetitive wordless sequences, claustrophobic panelling, and the characters' subtle, muted expressions of their feelings.

Rather than face his problems head-on, the protagonist buries himself in superhero comics. At various points, Gijsemans shows these comics directly: deliberately hokey pastiches drawn in a pleasingly fuzzy retro style. This is an interesting device, taking the reader directly into the protagonist's escapism, and providing light relief from the otherwise very bleak narrative. However, I have to say that these go on a bit too long, altogether taking up about a tenth of the page count. At some points they're fun, but they're not nearly as compelling as the real story.

Despite that one complaint, this is an excellent comic, exhibiting that golden combination of formal mastery with having something worthwhile to say. I'm now very keen to read more from this author.

Wie nähert man sich dem Tabuthema Pädophilie? Ben Gijsemans wagt den unaufgeregten, emotional erdrückenden Weg in seiner Graphic Novel «Aaron» und macht damit alles richtig.

Hast du eine Fantasie, eine Lust oder eine Neigung, die dich begleitet, aber du mit niemandem Teilen kannst? Ein Verlangen, das dich bedrückt und dich isoliert? Der 20-jährige Schüler Aaron kennt diese Situation und wird in den Urlaubstagen nicht nur vom Lernen für die Nachprüfungen geplagt, sondern von dem Anblick eines kleinen Jungen. Was passiert da mit ihm?

mijn favoriete beeldroman allertijden. Tempo, spanningsboog, rust. microexpressies en stiltes maken de kleinste stukjes tekst zo betekenisvol. Ik heb het gevoel het personage persoonlijk te kennen, iets dat het onderwerp des te heftiger, maar dus ook begrijpelijker maakt. Het zou je maar gebeuren. Verschrikkelijk, om zonder liefde door het leven te gaan, omdat sex in de regel gelijk aan verkrachting zal staan. Ondertussen de superhelden pulp fragmenten tussendoor, zijn geniaal. Dit boek is literair, gelaagd en complex. Ik heb nog niets beters gezien in het medium.

Credi che ci siano tanti cattivi?

Raccontare il quasi indicibile senza giudizio, limitandosi a uno slice of life ripetitivo e alienante.
I pochi scorci d’altro sono rappresentati da fumetti superomistici che imitano la Golden age e da frammenti di socialità che non riescono però a distrarre il lettore da quella cosa.
La tensione è onnipervasiva e non si arriva mai a un climax: non si sa se tirare un sospiro di sollievo o se restare impietriti e boccheggiare nel timore di quello che potrebbe succedere.

Deze graphic novel heeft een diepe indruk nagelaten.
Ik ben heel blij dat ik het gewoon besteld heb zonder ook maar enige info op te zoeken.
Maw wist ik niet wat het verhaal ging brengen.

Ik kan alleen maar zeggen, gewoon kopen.
Als je dacht dat je eenzaamheid begreep lees dit boek dan, it's a whole other level.

3.5 Ik had op voorhand niets opgezocht en het onderwerp was dan ook een pak zwaarder dan verwacht. Het verlopen van de tijd en de stijl van de strip spraken me aan. De super hero comic-achtige delen, hoewel nuttig en terecht geïntegreerd, waren minder mijn ding en haalden me iets te veel uit het hoofdverhaal.

Scimmiotta male Drnaso e lo fa non toccandola piano, ma cercando di fare breccia in un tema delicatissimo.
Il risultato è che non sono riuscito per nulla a empatizzare con il protagonista. Carina l'idea delle strisce di supereroi in cui le storie sono convolute all'inverosimile, forse metafora della psiche o lotta interna del protagonista. Però anche questa esaurisce presto la sua novità.

Deed bij wijlen aan Chris ware denken. Het repetitieve wekte eerst wat ergernis op, maar ging daarna al snel werken.
De stukken ‘comic’ heb ik overgeslagen. Dat is wellicht erg slecht van me, maar die kinderachtige, over-the-top manier van praten en actie kon er even niet in.

What a tough read this has been.

I cannot imagine a better way to talk and portray such a tremendously horrible condition.

You suffer for Aaron, but cannot help but despising him too.

I understand now why I was told by the comic book owner that this would never get translated to English.

In plaats van voor zijn herexamens te studeren, verliest Aaron zich in zijn stripcollectie, waarin superhelden alles vlotjes voor elkaar krijgen. Zowat het tegengestelde van antiheld Aaron dus. Een trage graphic novel met wel wat lege gesprekken en bijna-stillevens van soms een pagina lang. Deed meteen sterk aan de Noorse roman ‘Naïef. Super’ van Erlend Loe denken: het sociale isolement, de bal, het buurjongetje, de oudere broer, het (schijnbaar) lege bestaan.
