The Noah Reid Action Thriller Series Books 1-3 by bestselling author Wes Lowe have left readers across the globe breathless and craving for more. If you like crime action thrillers tinged with Asian mysticism, gritty action and heart-pounding suspense, then you will love the Noah Reid series.
My work is infused with relentless furious action and/or paranormal charismata. Contemporary worlds infused with mysticism. Breathless, brain-twisting plots. High stakes suspense that churns the psyche.
But ultimately it is knowing and experiencing the lives of people that provide the impetus of Stories that Grip the Soul.
I've made music with Kainai First Nations, helped save Russian refugees from deportation, hung with Martial Arts Grandmasters, counseled WWII vets on their deathbeds. Not to mention deep Chinese, cultural participation,
Wesley Robert Lowe is an award-winning writer, filmmaker and composer (including four seasons on Sesame St.).
I have purchased, read and reviewed the first three books in the Noah Reid series. When Mr. Lowe assembled a boxset for these books, he sent an ARC and asked for an honest review, so this is my summary for it.
Master Wu, Grandmaster of Hung Gar Shaolin martial arts, had left the monastic life, and settled in Hong Kong, hoping to encourage more men to join the group. His best early students included Garret Southam (British), Tommy Sung (Chinese) and Chin Chee Fok (also Chinese). Chin was drawn away to a high-roller lifestyle financed by easy money that could be made illegally and convinced Garret and Tommy to join him.
Noah Reid’s parents were missionaries who ran the Good Shepherd School, a free school in their shabby fifth-floor tenement in a poverty-stricken Hong Kong district. Their hearts of gold would not permit them to turn away anyone who needed help, and Noah inherited that trait.
Master Wu did not have a head for business. His early success in martial arts training waned, and he eventually lost everything, winding up in the streets. Noah happened to find him and took him home; his parents took him in, and Master Wu insisted on training Noah in martial arts to pay for his keep. He was a hard taskmaster, insisting on perfection and Noah excelled in his training.
Chin was not a businessman; he needed and trusted Garret and Tommy to run his operations and keep up the appearance of legitimacy in the books. They wanted out, so Chin killed their wives to keep them in line. They vowed to do everything they could to bring Chin down and began embezzling money and eventually stashed billions secretly to set up their daughters for life. Chin couldn’t tell that anything was amiss. When they were ready to leave the operation, they consulted Master Wu, who advised them to wait for the proper time: when Noah would be ready to tackle the job.
Chin had planned for, named and trained his children to specifically represent the 5 traditional animals of the Shaolin: Duke, the only child who worked alongside his father was the Tiger. His son King was the Snake, daughter Queenie was the Crane, Prince was the Leopard, and Prez was the Dragon.
When the embezzlement became known, Chin narrowly escaped death in a fiery confrontation with Garret Southam and Noah Reid, which claimed Garret’s life. Chin was severely burned over his entire body, so he was unable to carry on the mission to eliminate Master Wu and Noah and reclaim the billions that Garret and Tommy Sung (also killed by Chin’s cohorts) had stolen from him. Chin’s son Duke, the Tiger, was killed in a one-on-one battle with Noah. Chin gathered his 4 remaining children to engage them in his revenge. The 4 hated their father, but he held power over them, which he had no qualms about using as needed.
King, the Snake, had the most immediate need for cash, so he took on his father’s quest. He led a gang that smuggled illegals and heroin onto the West Coast of North America. He had spent a fortune researching and developing select species of snakes and special snake venoms for causing untraceable sickness and deaths. The second book follows his efforts to capture Master Wu and Noah.
Garret’s daughter Olivia (who had been romantically involved with Noah Reid) and Tommy’s daughter Abby, would not accept the blood money and agreed that Noah should take it and run a foundation to help disadvantaged children, and then left Hong Kong for New York to pursue a music career.
Chin now pressed Queenie (“Crane”) to do his dirty work. She had many enemies and was deeply in debt, so she desperately needed money quickly. She devised a plan to link up with Olivia and Abby to lure Noah to New York to fund an artist school for gifted needy kids.
These books are all well-written with a complicated plot, strong characters and descriptions that made me feel like I was on the street with them. There is a lot of action, (some of which is very graphic violence and sexuality) and a very intriguing story which made it very hard to put down, meaning I lost a fair amount of sleep. If you like thrillers with martial arts fighting and twisting, turning plots, this is for you! I enjoyed these books and will certainly read more of Mr. Lowe’s writing.
Noah Reid writes some of the best mystery thrillers you could ever want. This box set is a really cheap way to get some of his best books. You will not be sorry and reading the books in order will give you a better understanding of the rest of the books. Jeez some great characters.
Each one of the novels is filled with action. Fury Unleased, Manipulate and Venomous. Chin sends his children to avenge Noah Reid and get his ill gotten money back. Each novel will keep you entertained. Page turning thrillers.
Three well written books. Fast and furious action from start to finish. Lots of martial arts, lots of different characters, good and evil. Need to know what happens in the next two books.
