“Telepath” is the fourth in a series of stories featuring the members of the Hyllis family. After a plague induced apocalypse collapsed civilization back to iron and horsepower, the Hyllises developed a genetic tendency to inherit “talents.” Eva Hyllis and her ancestors became healers because their talents let them feel inside their patients. This helps them diagnose the underlying causes of many illnesses. Having made a diagnosis, sometimes they can do something. Unfortunately, often they cannot. However, Eva’s children Tarc and Daussie have inherited telekinetic and teleportation talents. Telekinetic pressure can stop bleeding and teleportation can remove stones and arterial plaques. In this book, they realize their young cousin Kazy’s a telepath! Tarc realizes his girlfriend Lizeth’s a precog… just before she breaks up with him. Now they’re rapidly finding more and more medical conditions their talents allow them to treat. And, they discover an ancient, undisturbed medical facility which promises more equipment and knowledge. Perhaps Eva’s long held dream to teach and practice medicine full time might become possible?
I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.
I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at http://laury.dahners.com/ if you like.

I continue to like this series. I am finding little tidbits about the story/writing that I must comment about. These are just things that I noticed. These are not things that I like or dislike about the story, just things that I noticed. The first is that I don't believe the world would end up the way it was described based on the setup. The story is written like there was a zombie apocalypse or a nuclear war. In those cased I can see how technology would no longer work. Having 97% of the population killed off by a virus, doesn't explain why all old technology has been lost though. Why would people forget what bacteria or a virus is? This is just something I thought about and I am not upset by it. This is the story the author wanted to tell and I am okay with the fact the setup doesn't perfectly match the outcome. The author is a doctor and done a good job of bringing his old occupation to this new one. Even though writing is very difficult he has made it much easier on himself by picking topics he knows so much about. I am in medicine myself so it is an interesting blend of science with fantasy. He also makes it easier on himself by going over the same things in every book. In this book, the cousin is found to be a telepath. The same conversation is had with her that was had with Tarc in the first book and the sister in the second book.
Another thing that I noticed is how men are written in this world. Tarc is written about like a saint. He is the deadliest person in the story and yet at the same time uses his abilities to heal without any regard for himself. He rescues people all the time and treats every woman he meets with respect. Basically the perfect guy. Everyone else is pretty much a rapist. The family can't move 10 feet without running into another bandit or rapist. Every man (except Tarc) has lewd thoughts about Daussie and Kazy. It also seems a little odd that everyone seems to know what the "Ancients" used to do, but everyone also has forgotten how it was done? Again, not very realistic considered the setup, but again, this is the story the author wanted to tell and I don't begrudge him that. I was hesitant to write those things down because people want to go to extremes. If I say something or write something people either see praise of criticism. Sometimes it's neither, just interesting aspects.
I really like Tarc and the rest of the characters, though I wasn't a huge fan of Lizeth and never have been. She only seemed to like Tarc because he was so dangerous, not because he was a good person. She knew he was a good person in the last book but was still with Sam until she found out that Tarc was the one to rescue Sam and not the other way around. I also am not a great fan of Eva. She makes decisions that affect the whole family without taking into account their feelings. She continued to heal in the last book despite everyone telling her not to and put her family in real danger. In this book she makes a decision to leave the caravan and settle down in new town despite her husbands objections and the risks involved. For Eva if it help her healing, any price is worth it, even if it is bad for the family. She might be written like that because the author is a doctor. It is not spoken of out loud a lot, but for a physician the work tends to come first and everything else comes second. You can't work that hard and that long and say that family comes first no matter how much you love them.
I enjoyed this book A lot and had been hoping Me Dahners would come back to this series. The characters are good and they continue to evolve into more interesting people. The pacing was good and the action scenes are fun as well. Overall it was a excellent book.
I love Laurence's What If series, especially this post-apocalyptic one. Unlike many of this genre, Laurance does not work in the immediate aftermath of disaster. Rather, we see a society far enough beyond apocalypse to have 'stabilized', yet near enough to the incident to still have a few precious books and some sturdier items from the past. Into this landscape come the remarkable Hyllis family with their 'abilities' such as telekinesis, brought about from the very virus that nearly killed off all humanity. Their accomplishments are all the more remarkable because the author posits small improvements rather than superhuman differences. Using ingenuity with what they were gifted, this family does more than survive, they help others and work to bring knowledge back from the past. The result is a thoroughly entertaining read that leaves you feeling good about what people can do when they try.
If you have never read any of Dr. Dahners' novels please start with this series. Thus far, this book is the fourth in the series and, in my opinion, one of his best. The plot line follows a family in a post apocolyptic world where the disease that wiped out most of the population also passes along some amazing skills among a small portion of the survivors. Dr. Dahners uses his medical knowledge to spin a realistic novel but don't think that he skimped on the action because that alone abounds. You may have noticed that Dr. Dahners kindly gave me credit for helping on the cover design. Please understand I was a fan long before becoming involved in the design work and I firmly believe that you will soon be.
Dahners, Laurence E. Telepath. Hyllis Family 4. Kindle, 201. Laurence Dahners is one of those writers who should not be picked up in mid series, despite what he says in his prologues. In the postapocalyptic world of the Hyllis family stories, our protagonists are the beneficiaries of a genetic mutation that gives them several extrasensory abilities. In Telepath a Hyllis cousin is discovered to have telepathic and hypnotic abilities. In typical Dahners fashion, the characters are most interested in the abilities medical uses for telepathy. Diagnosis and anesthesiology come in for the most attention. But it also is useful in espionage. As usual, Dahners tells a good story but never strays from his expected formula. 3.5 stars.
An awesome story! I listened to the audiobook which was generally a great experience. Now that I'm several books into the series I've noticed a small issue that I've also noticed with other writers. The issue is repeatedly using the same word to describe how people are talking. This is much more obvious to me when I listen to audiobooks and I know there are only so many words for this application so I feel for authors- especially of long series. Nevertheless, the author (and narrator) have used the word "snorted" one million times. I don't like this word and wouldn't care if I never heard it again after these books.
So far, this is my favorite of the series. It's probably because there's more a sense of world building since the family is staying put for a while. Also, relationships are steadied and the talented ones are becoming more established in their abilities while continuing to expand on them. Love that this book ended with Eva getting one of her greatest dreams realized.
Really hope the sheriff isn't a redo of earlier schmucky characters. Just sayin' ...
Yep, another Amazon review. Bring on those author perks! 😻
Laurence Dahners is one of the best Science Fiction authors writing today. All of his books are exceptional, but the Hyllis family novels are the very best. The only problem is, we have to wait so long inbetween books. Dr. Dahners I feel your Science fiction fans need you more than you medical patients do. There are more outstanding orthopaedic surgeons, than they are great authors such as yourself.
Another solid installment of the Hyllis family. The author gives new powers not yet seen before, which keeps things fresh, and a new town. Although the new town has a significant stain against it that makes the reader question why the Hyllis family would consider residing there, the author provides the secret reasoning, with an unknown bounty drawing them in. I look forward to seeing if the family will stay or be forced to leave in the next book.
Once again Laury has written a fascinating story to continue the Hyllis saga. To further expand the imagination with the possibilities of mental abilities and expanding our feel of the world as it has become. I very much enjoyed this book and will eagerly await the next one in line. Thank Laury
This what if story of a group of people with abilities was hard for me to remember the previous books and I almost had to reread. The current story soon took over by itself and I was able to enjoy. I thought the porting ability was the only too far fetch ability and belong to the El D series.
He has done it again. Another five star book. Thank you Dr. Dahners for this story.
The story begins where the last ended but does not need to read in order to be enjoyed. The science faction of this book is very believable and we'll organized. The characters are all well written and believable. This is a fun read that I found hard to put down.
Congratulations to Lawrence Dahners for this amazing series. It’s hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
Great new characters and story lines woven seamlessly into a story that will not let you stop reading. I have greatly enjoyed every book in the Hollis family story. Can’t wait for another!
I’ve been hooked on this series since the first book and am hoping for more in the series. It’s a nice change of pace from typical over powered comic book style powers.
Do I need to say anymore??? Hope you continue expanding this series. So different than other PAW fiction. I like that you focus on medicine and lost knowledge, rather than the difficulties of survival
I love this series and all the books this author has written. They are all very well written and the characters make you want to see what is going to happen next can’t wait for the next story.
Mr Dahners consistently produces books that are a joy to read. And I have read every single one that I can lay my hands on. All that is left is for me to urge Mr Dahners to write quickly. Please
I found the story to be fairly straight forward, and definitely full of feel good problem solving. Sometimes it is nice to just have things go well for the main characters.
Another good story! Is the next book the one that the local baron gets after them? Absolute rulers get crazy when stuff happens that they don't understand. Which is everything outside of gold or soft kittys.
With great power comes great problems. Here they are, working their butts off, and all it looks like is that they are "just" looking at the patient . The gifts they have would be much appreciated in the here and now.
But!!! I've read all these books and when I got it again and downloaded it, there seems to be a problem. It's like the first half of each chapter is there but the second half is missing! Big disappointment. So much of the story just vanished!
I really like this story line, its a very interesting take on a post apocalyptic world. Very well scripted plot and interesting characters. Well worth the read. Big thumbs up.
There's hardly any story here, only updates about lives of the protagonist. There is no escalation of issues, no resolution. This typically happens in in any one or more of 4th to 6th book in all Dahners' series. I must say though, you do not lose interest till end.
