Moregan, warrior princess of Lysia, faces her worst nightmare. Her kingdom has fallen, her lover has fled, her family is gone and she has been taken as the slave bride of the very man who brought her life to ruin.
With honor a distant memory Moregan has no choice but to find new ways to fight. The sword has failed her but she will learn that a woman has other weapons. The problem now is swallowing her pride to put them to use and enduring pains and pleasures she never dreamed she'd experience. Of course that's not so great a mountain to climb. It's not like princess Moregan could ever fall in love with her enemies. Could she?

This seems to be a good author but the book was not at all what I was expecting. A warrior princess taken as tribute after losing a brutal war has all the plot potential that I love. Unfortunately, this didn't live up to that blurb or premise. Moregan, although set up as a fierce warrior, was ineffective and emotional and immature through most of the book. Her plotting was pretty good but everyone around her still seemed to always be one step ahead. Even the sexual aspect was tame as she was seduced or coaxed into the various m/f and f/f acts.
It wasn't a bad book but based on the blurb, I was disappointed.
This is another of my standalone books that does not relate to my Brooke's Hollow shared universe. Unlike the lighthearted comedy of Lust Fairy or the new adult drama of Whispers, however, this story has more of a Game of Thrones flare (and yes, I admit I named a character after one of the wolves in GoT. I thought it suited her).
By Right of Conquest follows a tomboy princess as she's taken prisoner by the people who conquered her kingdom (Lysia). She's a warrior, tough and rebellious, who spent more time training with the cavalry than wearing dresses. Not that either skill will help her much. Doran, the man leading the armies of the Shadow (that seemingly silly name gets explained) admires her strength but he's always a step ahead of her. As part of a deal struck between Moregan's father and Doran she is to become the conqueror's bride in exchange for sparring the lives of all those Lysians who were not in the military. That he already has a fiance is hardly an issue (he's allowed more than one wife) but the fact that she too has an interest in Moregan disturbs our young princess...at first. Marriage and slavery are very similar in this savage culture but no one said marriage had to be between 1 man and 1 woman in this place. Nymeria, Doran's other fiance, certainly wouldn't abide such a rule anyway, if it had existed.
The story centers on Moregan seeking some way to regain her honor and strike back against her conquerors. She learns about these people and their ways, follows the intrigue between Doran and her brother and sinks into her new life as a collared sex slave destined for the marriage bed. Along the way she'll be trailed by another Lysian slave who finds herself the property of Nymeria, she'll learn the fate of her secret lover from her father's cavalry and she'll meet two slavegirls who will act as surrogate ladies in waiting. Each character has their own motives and intentions as they move through a story that will see Moregan evolve through her struggles in surprising ways.
This is a much darker tale than my other works. It's a brutal world (inspired by the Gor books but without the supernatural elements) and features certain acts and practices that may seem harsh to modern sensibilities. That may intimidate some but Doran is an interesting character. Although born in a culture that conquers nations, takes slaves, impales their enemies and does all sorts of other horrible things he has a touch of nobility in him. He refuses to take Moregan until she consents and defends her when threatened. It may not be love, as we understand it today, but there is a bond that forms between Doran and Moregan that I feel sets the stage for the more tender erotic scenes.
There is a lot of bondage and experimentation in this story, however. Moregan is rarely clothed and is constantly aware of the threats from the men around her. In that regard the story is reminiscent of Claiming Sleeping Beauty by Anne Rice. Chained damsels, lewd touches, humiliating exposure its well beyond beginner BDSM fantasy.
Game of Thrones, The Gorean Saga, Claiming Sleeping Beauty there are a lot of inspirations here but it's a unique and empowering story that subverts expectations and arouses with every new encounter. Possibly my sexiest book to date it will make you yearn for the days when men lived by and under the sword...and the Shadow.
An excellently paced and enjoyable read, this book offers the intrigue of Game of Thrones with kinky sex taking the place of battles. In some way a throwback to the classic bodice ripper genre, this book takes the kink seriously and the sex is well intigrated into the plot and the desires of the characters. A warning that this book contains fantasy depictions of non consent. The world depicted is harsh and executions are not uncommon. If a defeated warrior princess using sex to manipulate those who destroyed her kingdom sounds appealing, this is the book for you.
Having read two other books by Shawna Hunter, I was very interested to read her again but in a slightly different, well, setting. Her last two books were erotic superhero adventures; this one was more erotica fantasy. If you read this book, I recommend both of the Mistress Domination books, which are more light-hearted and fun while also being sexy.
In this novel, our heroine, the princess and future queen of a peaceful land, is captured when a neighboring nation makes war on her kingdom. She is taken as a prize, a prisoner, a slave, and a future wife of the man who toppled her whole world. What's left for her to do but to submit to her new lord and master? And when I say submit, I mean submit. It's gradual, and I think Shawna Hunter does that well, although sometimes I'm not sure if she totally pulls off the angry queen eager to kill her new master. Our queen is confused, uncertain about what to do, bitter about what's happened to her kingdom and her father, and she says she wants to destroy her enemy, but you can see she's also intrigued and a little excited by being taken as a slave. Eventually, as one would expect, she surrenders to her new life and finds peace with what's happened.
Still, it doesn't quite come off. It felt the whole time like there was something missing, some little thing that made the transition click into place. Honestly, as a writer myself, I couldn't figure it out. I couldn't decide if our queen was supposed to be more bloodthirsty and the bad guys more brutal, or not. They aren't brutal; they aren't the brutes she always believed they were. Or at least her new master isn't. Her new master, and future husband, is considerably more gentle than she, or I, expected, and perhaps the goal here was to win her over with a soft approach.
Regardless, it does come together very well over time, and in the end, the transition from bitter captive to willing queen feels right. Our heroine has accepted her role and realized that she's much better off as a part of this new kingdom. Not because she's beaten down, but because our author has done such a great job of changing her perspective and giving the characters around her the right moves to win her over to this new view. In the end, she place in the world felt right.
By Right of Conquest is a good book. It's a good fantasy focused on political intrigue and complex personal relationships, and it's got a very solid erotica feel with some very hot scenes. It's definitely worth the read. I read it on Kindle, and it was a fast, easy read. You'll want to go on to the next chapter, even though you should be sleeping.
