Loyalty and love are pitted against each other when a cursed man is forced to choose between family obligation and the possibility of happiness.
Dumped, robbed, and heartbroken, Violet pawns her engagement ring and heads south to be the maid of honor at her best friend’s wedding. When Julien interrupts a moment of private agony to comfort her, she finds herself drawn to the unusual man.
Punished for a crime he never committed, and trapped for one hundred years in the same house with his brothers, Julien Dalcour is a bitter shadow of his former self. However, when he meets Violet, his desire to break his ghostly affliction is rekindled.
But someone must pay for the crimes committed by the Dalcour family, and that someone has no intention of accepting punishment. When Julien vanishes, Violet is left to defend herself against a sinister force who intends to write her into this tragic supernatural tale.
An intriguing blend of paranormal romance and human nature, which leaves the reader longing for their own ghostly encounter.

This is book six of the Paranormal Tales from Firefly Island series and the main character is Violet, who finds out when she tries to buy a plane ticket to her best friend’s wedding, that her bank account has been completely emptied! The only person with access to her account, is the man who asked her to marry her the previous night, her boyfriend now fiancé, who it turns out has emptied her account and even her house, before leaving her with no notice! She doesn’t even know where he is, nor whether the name he gave her is really his actual name, and she can’t get her money back as she allowed him to have access to her account. She pawns the ring Roland gave her and that gives her enough money to get to her friend Chloe’s wedding in time.
She arrives at Chloe’s fiancé Mason’s family home and is told she won’t need to find a hotel, as there is no way Chloe would let her out of her sight before the wedding. She wants to look out for Vi and have her involved in everything that’s going on. Roland was supposed to walk Vi down the aisle in the wedding ceremony, but now Chloe wants to try and set her up with another single guest, about the last thing Vi wants! They give her a room at the front of the house and sets her bags there, warning her it is an old home and that there might be some odd noises in the night. They need to dress for dinner, but Vi doesn’t have anything, so Chloe lends her a dress and tells her to meet them downstairs in an hour. Vi shuts the door and finally breaks down and starts to cry. A knock at the balcony door surprises her and she opens it to find a handsome stranger, who looks a bit like Mason, there. He introduces himself as Julien Dalcour and she asks if he is going to be her escort the next day. Someone who is not too attractive and isn’t looking for a relationship! He makes a joke of her reply and the fact she tried to say she didn’t find her attractive, when her body tells him otherwise!
He arranges to be available later that night, just to talk, but kisses her. As he does that, strange things happen in the room, with a chair falling over and a curtain tangling up in it. He leaves for what he calls a prior engagement and after she gets changed, she makes her way downstairs. As she passes through the library, she sees portraits of mason’s ancestors and is shocked to find one of Julien Dalcour 1821 – 1843! Julien and his brothers were thought murdered, Henri, Julien, and Beau, and they haunt the house to this day. Their cousin Oliver was also thought killed, but he has never haunted the house. They were all punished for a crime one of them was accused of doing. None of them owned up, so they were cursed and trapped in the house for the last hundred years. Until one of them admits what they did, the rest will continue to pay. When Julien meets Violet, he wants to end his ghostly life and have a life again in the past. Chloe is annoyed, as she has never met any of mason’s ghostly family, while Violet meets someone on her first ever visit.
The ghosts like to play tricks on the household, but they also have their own likes and dislikes and can be cruel as well. Henri especially, can be harsh in his treatment of others and always seems the angriest of the three. Violet spends a night with Julien for company and begins to fall for him. She knows there can be no future together, but would like to help him end his painful existence as a ghost, so offers to help break the curse. Only problem is, that the person who should have been cursed and didn’t want to own up to their actions all those years ago, still isn’t willing to admit to anything. The other brothers and their cousin have had to suffer for over a hundred years, all for the selfish actions of the other. Violet will not find it quite as easy as she thought to help Julien and in his absence, after he spent so much energy trying to stay with her in a solid state, he can’t come back to stop her being hurt at all. A lovely tale of love in impossible circumstances and a ghostly setting! I can’t wait to read some more and catch up with the other tales in the series. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
