A Glorious Enemy

Rate this book
An American privateer runs afoul of a fiery Englishwoman when the United States of America declares war on the British Empire.

-

June, 1812. The British Royal Navy has been crimping sailors off American vessels for far too long.

Griffin Anderson is eager for a reckoning with the British. He's waited years to get back some of what was stolen from him, and from the nation that birthed him. A nation he's sworn a personal oath and allegiance to. But in his first action as a privateer, he discovers the unlikeliest of enemies waiting for him...

Lady Constance Pickmore has come to the Bahamas for a final grand tour of her family's holdings, before she enters her first official season, courting within le bon ton, the Upper Ten Thousand. She desires more than anything to aid her family's mercantile interests and recover their losses from Napoleon Bonaparte's fleets. Until she discovers that Tiddy-Doll's ships aren't the only privateers on the waters any longer...

While war rages across the Atlantic and over two continents, two souls discover the first tethers of passion awaiting them... but they're on the wrong side.

And when loyalty and love collide... who wins?

If I could choose one word to describe A Glorious Enemy, it would be epic. It's long, one of the longest books I've read in awhile. But it's worth it. It has a wide cast of characters and takes place over an extended period of time. Everything about this book is epic.

First of all, Fero's attention to detail is immaculate. He has clearly done hours and hours of research for the time period and it shows through in every page. I also want to applaud the editing done on this book. The ebook comes in at 541 pages and I can honestly say that I didn't notice a single spelling mistake or grammatical error. That alone is incredible, for any book. I also LOVED Fero's writing style. Again, the details and love he has for his characters is obvious and a true pleasure to read.

As for the characters and plot, I am impressed. The plot was fast-paced and the characters were easy to root for, even if I didn't always agree with their choices. They are human, they make mistakes, and they are amazing.

I highly recommend this book for all fans of historical fiction. I am a huge lover of anything historical, but I have to say The War of 1812 is one subject I knew very little about before beginning this adventure with Griffin and Connie. I look forward to learning more in the second book!

This book is suitably named - it really is Glorious. It's an epic tale, told with wit and humour, knowledge, intelligence and understanding. Mr Fero obviously has a passion for his subject matter, and for his characters, as they come alive on the page, as do the locations, whether they be on land or at sea.

I can't believe that this is the first published (self or otherwise) book that Mr Fero has - it is an accomplished piece of work that will stand the test of time. You can imagine it as a film on the big screen, or a series on Netflix (those of you who are fans of Bridgerton can imagine the outfits and sets, but also picture sailing ships a la HMS Victory and you get the picture)

After purchasing the book on kindle, I ordered the paperback as it's a book I want to own, retain and re-read - it really is *that* good. I await the sequel with baited breath.

PS Yes, I read it in one day (and night)

Epic, steamy, and addictive!

It's been years since I've read a book this large and I finished it in a week! With well-developed characters and a thoroughly engaging plot, 'A Glorious Enemy' is hard to put down. I loved the way the story unfolded, the historical details, and how distinctly believable all the characters are. And oooh Constance and Griffin...the chemistry between those two is *chef's kiss*.

I really can't wait for the next book in the series!

I just couldn't get past the pages of exposition. The first chapter was a data dump on Constance's family. It was too much information without moving the story along. The quality of the writing was good. It was obvious that the author spent a good amount of time crafting the sentences. There was a teeny bit of action with Constance on her family's ship. The captain suggests she go belowdecks because it looks like they are about to be boarded by a hostile ship. Constance wants to stay on deck and ends up shooting the captain of the enemy ship in the arm. Great stuff. If the family information had been cut away and only inserted as it was needed for the story - or better yet shown as needed instead of told - I'd happily have read the whole thing. I think.

Anyway, I will probably give this book another try a little later. I strongly encourage the author to employ an editor who can help the book focus on the story rather than data dumps. I think you've got something here.

Exceptionally Good

Well-written Character driven historical fiction… does not begin to describe this early 19th Century thrill ride.

The large amount of period detail reminds me of the Hornblower and Aubrey series… but written with more balance… there’s love making, poetry… revenge… treachery… and conflicted loyalties.

I recommend this book without reservation.

I have not read this book. But I would not be surprised to see that the “glorious enemy” the title alludes to would be women. The way this author takes to his socials to rant about women at any given opportunity is truly deranged. Anyway, buyer beware, I guess. 🤷‍♀️

Very well written and plotted. You can feel the care the author has for the events.
I should preface by saying that historical fictions are not my favorite, and I think that contributed most to my lessened enjoyment. It also felt a bit too long and dragged a bit for my taste.
I think historical fans will enjoy this, especially if they’re fans of Pirates of the Caribbean
