A Heart Back Home

Rate this book
Clay Kartwell loses his job and gets a call from his estranged father asking for his help back on the family farm, all on the same day. Clay knows he has to return home, even though it’s the last thing he wants to do. Some things back home are best left unremembered.
Dell Warrington was Clay’s unrequited high school crush and the man he least wants to see. He’s everything Clay remembered and more, including the father of four-year-old Archie. But Dell hasn’t had it easy either, and not everything is as it seems.
Clay sets out to save the farm and bring in the crops with Dell’s help. Old assumptions fall to the side as the two men reconnect, and the second chance that Clay never knew he wanted seems within his grasp. But Clay left the farm for a reason, and reconciliation with his stoic father won’t be easy. When his city life offers a new opportunity, he must decide whether to accept what he knows, or follow his heart.

Kindle Reading #8

Another masterpiece by Andrew Grey!!!
OMG!! I love this new series by Andrew Grey. I can't wait to read the 2nd one and the 3rd one. Oh wait ... they are on the kindle and they are waiting for me.

PS: I can put a month to read one of his books (I read also other books) but I feel so good. No traslation mistakes made by translators. I am really so tired of them. I can't stand who ruin my favorite authors. As I said before I've reached my limit after I read Range #1 in Italian. Period.

A sweet novella set in Wisconsin, where Clay must go to help his injured father on the farm. Picking up his father's medicine, he sees Dell, his high school crush, who has a son. Things were friendly and the next day, Dell, 27, and Archie, 4 1/2 show up to help at the farm.
Everything on the farm is a mess and the corn crop needs to be harvested for the money the farm needs to survive. We get many talks and answers are given, and we see teamwork on chores, and more.

Clay's friend Alan comes to help and he's so lively and funny.
Dell and Clay's hearts are rekindled, the new projects are plain to see, and the cute little boy says the best things.

Clay and his father smooth their rough edges.
It's a novella with a big heart !
ENJOY !

Uggghh.. men! Especially stubborn farm ones! I loved the story, but I seriously wanted to slap both Clay and his dad.
One with his head so far up his ass he was oblivious to things right in front of him, and the other so stubborn and close lipped that felt as if his manhood was going to dry and fall off if he actually talked at all.
I loved Dell and Alan, so I'm gonna go and start Alan's story now.

I have a problem with Andrew Grey books.
I really like a lot of his story ideas and the blurbs sound great,
but unfortunately his writing hardly ever works for me.
Every time I think I should stop reading his books until I see another plot that sounds amazing.
City boy returns to his hometown to help his injured father on the family farm and meets his high school crush, who now has a 4 year old son he raises alone, after coming out 😍
Then the story evolves and it just doesn't work (for me).
The main characters are wooden and lifeless, side characters black and white, and the romance feels convenient rather than heartfelt.
The main characters feel like from a romance novel and not from real life, the way they talk and act is not genuine, it feels constructed.
So again this was a miss for me, a story that could have been wonderful, but at the end was really meh...
So, that's it, I swear no more AG books for me, hopefully I learned my lesson.
"A heart back home" gets 2.5 stars from me, if you like his stories go and read it anyway and just ignore me 😉

I really almost gave this book 2 stars. It was ok , but I just couldn’t really like Clay. He was just so wrapped up in himself that he couldn’t really relate to anyone else. I know his father had problems with him being gay, but he never really confronted him about it. Of course it all works out, but I just found him frustrating.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

This is a sweet and tender reconnection small-town romance. The headfirst fall into love seemed a bit quick, but Clay and Dell are not strangers, and their shared childhood infatuation only ignites in their close proximity now as single adults. Archie’s already build a bond with Clay’s dad, and it’s about a minute and a half before Clay falls for him, too. Clay waffles a bit regarding how to figure out his future, but Alan’s counsel, as lascivious as it is, points him in the only direction he can reasonably take. The angst is fairly low, with good pacing, a dash of yearning, and a bit of sexytimes. It’s a happy ever after for everyone.

Sweet, quick, easy read. Clay and Dell reconnect after Dell comes home to help his dad and things move really quickly from there. I liked Clay and I liked Dell, but the insta-love didn't quite work for me, particularly on Dell's side. Although that could be because we never got his point of view.
But it was a sweet story, and Archie was darling.

Clay left home five years before without looking back. He and his father have an estranged relationship only talking briefly on holidays. He gets laid off from his job and his father calls needing help. Knowing it has to be bad for his father to actually ask him for help he reluctantly goes back. He meets his highschool crush and sees why he got such mixed signals when he meets Dell's son.

Dell made a mistake back then but now is seizing the opportunity to win Clay's heart.

A Heart Back Home is a short and sweet second chance romance. All of the characters are likable. Archie the four and a half-year-old is so cute and throw in Rex the lab mix and what more could you want? How about a funny best friend from the city coming to help?

There is charm, humor, and of course a sweet sexy romance! (Now please give us Alan's story!)

So this was more of a 3.5 ⭐️ rating.

The premise is a story we have all heard before, however the way Andrew Grey tells it make it feel like it is the first time hearing it. He has a wonderful writing style and can write dialogue that feels natural. I really liked the characters a lot. You felt close to them and really cared for them.

This story was romantic and so warming. There was a touch of smut but that’s it, like the characters in the book you’re left wanting more.

So my biggest complaint was that I wanted so much more. Andrew left so much to desire. It was almost like building a house with a strong foundation good bones and a beautiful exterior. Then you walk into that house and it’s not finished. This story could have benefited from another 50+ pages.

Clay had known he was gay since he was a teenager with the biggest crush ever on school hunk Dell. But then Clay’s mother died, his relationship with his father grew beyond surly and Dell blew hot and cold, confusing the hell out of Clay. When school finished, Clay had had enough and left for the bright lights of the town, determined not to return. Five years later, however, Clay finds himself between jobs and his father calls, urgently needing Clay’s help on the farm for a few weeks. When Clay returns, Dell is one of the first people he bumps into and Clay discovers he isn’t the only one who has grown up since school finished.

I really enjoyed this emotional and well written small town romance. I absolutely loved that while Clay had left and grown into a young man during his stint in the city, he didn’t pretend to know everything or act like being in the city had made him better or more worldly or anything like that. At heart Clay was just a more mature version of the small-town boy he had always been. I also really like the fact that even though Dell has a small son and had been confused about his sexuality during their high school years, he didn’t let his popularity with the ladies get to his head or his ego. Basically, while there were understandable small problems with both Clay and Dell – and the fact there was a massive amount of baggage to be fixed between them – they were both good, solid, reliable men and characters who I could root for from pretty much the beginning. This made the book a lot more palatable to me.

I admit that I felt the conflict and tension between Clay and his father was just a little overdrawn. I was pleased that this was where much of the plot tension resided and in general felt it was well handled, but at times it felt like there was just a little too much mis-communication and mis-understandings between Clay and his dad. I can totally appreciate the older gent was a stubborn farmer and well set in his ways – and communication is often not a strong suit with these types of men, so it was logical and realistic. I also appreciated how in this singular instance Clay didn’t shine brightly – he was expecting the worst in many respects from his dad and made his own assumptions and generalizations, so it was nice to see that Clay was not perfect. I just couldn’t help but feel this side of the plot was a little overdrawn for my personal tastes.

I was thrilled with the depth to both Clay and Dell’s characters, these were interesting and layered men who I enjoyed getting to know and in particular who I enjoyed watching them re-learn each other both personally and physically. I thoroughly enjoyed there was a small but important cast of secondary characters – Dell’s son Archie, Clay’s dad and Clay’s best friend Alan. The characters and the emotion of Clay and Dell reconnecting and learning to trust and love each other was delightful to read and I was so pleased the author didn’t rush through this part of the process between them. While there is some deliciously hot sex between them, I found this to be a deeply emotional book and one that focused on the relationship and connections between the men – not just their sizzle in the bedroom.

Hot and wonderful, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am eager to read the next in the series.

Awwww this is author Andrew Grey at his best...at least for me it is.

I adored this sweet story. The wonderful man who starred but also the wonderful people who co-starred! I mean you can only love Archie as he is absolutely adorable. I loved grumpy dad and let's not forget best friend Alan! I mean we are going to get his story right?

Mr Grey did an outstanding job in getting you involved in the lives of these men.

The writing flows so well that it's easy to get pulled in to this story. I found myself wanting to continue reading not so much because of anxiousness of waiting to see what would happen but just because it was wonderful to bask in a nice comfortable small town romance.

It's a story about coming home in more than one sense of the word.

This story has low angst. There are some minor struggles but the emphasis is on self-exploration. It's focused on finding out what you want and settling things that have happened and never been addressed properly. This goes for both Clay and Dell as well as for Clay and Dad.

Yes there are some little issues, like the almost instant feelings that are there. Where from Clay's perspective they have been there for a long time, it feels a bit rushed coming from Dell. I would have liked to have seen some more development there.

It doesn't take anything away from the story though, it only says it could have been even more. I could have read definitely a couple more chapters so to speak. The development of Dell's feelings, the interaction between Clay and his dad, even the romantic/sexual development between Clay and Dell would have been much appreciated! And hey, more Archie would have been a bonus of course.

The story starts when Clay looses his job and at almost the same time gets a call for help from his dad who he has been estranged from for 5 years. That call brings him back to his hometown and the farm, but also to the boy he loved from an early age, Dell.

Both men feel like this is a second chance in their own way and the story progresses as they find out about each other . Its about working their way through things and finding out what they want.

Overall I can definitely recommend this heartwarming novella to anyone who wants a low-angst sweet contemporary story. I definitely did.

A Heart Back Home
Heart, Home, Family, Book 1
By: Andrew Grey
Narrated by: Joshua Macrae

I enjoyed this book immensely, you could feel how much heart Andrew Grey put into this story as the emotions pour off the pages and into your heart. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they are likable and easy to care about too. When Clay Kartwell left home, he was not on the best of terms with his father, he has been on his own for a while and made a decent life for himself. Then he gets a call from his estranged father asking him to come home that he needs the help on the farm just after losing his job. He agrees to help him out until he is back on his feet after an injury. Back in his home town he sees the one he had a crush on, Dell Warrington, who now has a young son, Archie, but Clay knew he never stood a chance with Dell since he thought he was straight. Clay’s relationship with his father is still rocky, but when they finally communicate, he has some eye-opening moments. The same with Dell, I thought the two were great together and for each other, it took Clay a bit to realize the same. And Archie, the scene stealer, was absolutely adorable. I loved how everything played out in book, it is a beautifully written and plotted story with plenty of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions and a wonderful romance. Andrew Grey, thank you for this fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, Joshua Macrae is a talented narrator and a versatile voice artist. He had a complete understanding of the character he portrayed, gives each a voice that fits the character’s persona perfectly, sounding believable in each role he played. You could hear how much heart he put into his work as he captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into his performance and had you feeling every single one. Macrae is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen.

Thoughts: This is a romantic novella (short, quick read) about two men who loved, lost, and found love again. The characters are realistic, especially Clay. He had issues with his father, left the farm for the big city and barely spoke to the old man for five years. But when his dad calls for help, he’s there. Okay, so it helped that he lost his job and had nothing else to do, but he did go back home. And Dell is a sweet love interest for him. Because it’s a novella, there isn’t a lot of room to develop a long story line, but there’s enough for Clay to grow and change. As does his father. Dell, not as much, but it is there. I loved Alan as sort of Clay’s conscience. I wish we could have seen more of him, but as a minor character, he was great.

What I liked: Alan. He was a hoot. And the conflict between Clay and his father, and Clay and Dell, and Clay and… you get the picture. Clay was a very conflicted character who grows a lot and changes into a better person by the end. I loved that he did come home to help and worked hard to “save the farm”. And I loved how he reacted with Archie, Dell’s son.

What I didn’t like: very little. It was a nicely written story with a satisfying ending. A standard Andrew Grey story of love. Definitely pick this one up.

I really loved this book, it was sweet and loving and everything I was in the mood for. It's got that second chance feel to it as Clay and Dell finally get to truly express their feelings and be themselves. It's a story about finding what home really means.

Clay left the farm to start life on his own after his mother died and his relationship with his dad became strained. He thinks he's doing just fine, he has friends and a job and then all in one bad day he loses his job and gets the call that his dad needs help on the farm. He reluctantly returns with the idea of fixing what needs to be fixed and getting back to his life in the city. He doesn't expect Dell, the guy he's loved since he was in high school to show up and be everything he ever wanted and more, and to top it off, Dell wants Clay.

There was so much to love about this book! It's not an angsty read, but more of a loving, healing book. Dell and his cute little boy are so very loveable and just fit with Clay so very perfectly. This truly is a couple that is just meant to be. I really liked how these two finally open up to each other and find the love that they so deserve. I also really liked how Clay and his father repair their relationship. It may take some time for them, but it's so worth it! Add in Clay's best friend Alan, and it's fantastic, and I am really hoping that we get his story too! Overall, a wonderful, heartwarming read that I completely fell in love with!

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-
Away-book like
‘Jesse's Smile' or ‚Joey’ from Angelique Jurd,
‘Save the kids' series from EM Leya,
‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or
'Liberty' from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a
WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises
(like most of Andrew Grey books and
Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few
times a year (most romances where you can
enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader,
maybe 2-3 times a year. It’s like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-
reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but
it was ok). It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too
many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an
absolut NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole
line, dismissed, repeat the class

This was a really great story.

I loved the country setting, I loved the dad and his meddling ways. In short, I loved how cute this was.

When Clay left home, he never really looked back. He and his dad don’t know how to communicate. And the small-town life left him looking for the anonymity and options of a big city. He’s forgotten what he’s left behind.

Dell has stayed. He has a son, and he plans on raising him surrounded by friends and family. He’s a town folk through and through. Offering a helping hand whenever needed. Including Clay’s dad.

I enjoyed watching these two reconnect. Dell saw and opportunity that he thought he’d never get, while Clay saw the torture of something he would never be able to have. It made for some great push and pull, and for some really sweet moments.

I quite enjoyed narrator Joshua Macrae, this was my first audiobook by him, and I would gladly listen to more of his work.

Coming home story

Clay and Dell

Clay loses his job at the very beginning of the book. His dad calls bc he's hurt and needs help on his farm just as he's leaving his office after being laid off. Clay goes home and almost immediately runs into his HS crush Dell who had send mixed messages to him all through school.

I was okay with this book but not in love with it. Honestly I found a lot of it just so un-realistic on the relationships front from both his dad and Dell. Which kinda blow my mind bc I LOVE Andrew Gray books especially when he writes farm boys. But this one missed the mark for me. It was a good way to pass some time though. Will be reading book 2 if it's as short as this one.

Clay returns to the family farm after his father injures himself and needs help bringing in the crop...or he'll lose the farm. The father who has barely spoken to him since he told his parents he was gay, and long after his mother has died. Clay leaves his job in Chicago with plans to return as soon as he finishes the harvest.

Dell lives nearby with his four year old son, Archie. Clay had had a crush on Dell growing up, but never acted on it. Now they both admit to the attraction they felt for each other.

But what can change enough for Clay to stay?

Is it the promise of a family of his own? The forgiveness from his father. Or the love of Archie?

Maybe none of the above, or all of the above, blended together. Especially when the romance begins!

Charming romance!

I loved how this story was written. Although it’s a short book, it didn’t feel rushed. I liked how the story just jumps right in mixing in a little of the drama here and there so that we get the entire backstory. The chemistry between the characters was hot, as well as the single dad storyline.
The narration was good, but took a minute to get used to. There were some long pauses in between here and there but it wasn’t too bad. Some of the character voices were a sexy kinda of whisper that were HAF 🔥 moments. That said, I would love to try this narrator & author again, both are new to me.
This is book 1 with an HEA and can be read as a standalone.

I enjoyed this story, a bit of a second chance/reunion. Clay came home from the big city to help his father despite their differences. He helped fix up the farm, then couldn't decide what to do next. He was a bit defensive about his choices but definitely hard working and caring. He ran into Dell who had been helping Clay's father for the last while. Dell was confused but beginning to realize what truly made him happy. He loved his son with his whole being and was so considerate and helpful with Clay and his father that I fell in love. These two complemented each other and made this a good read.

I received a copy of this story through Book Obsessed Chicks Review, and this is my unsolicited review.

HEART BACK HOME by @andrewgreybooks

When I first found my love for MM Romance books, I began my journey by finding a series offered at my library by Andrew Grey. I devoured it. Now deep into my love of MM Romance I rediscovered him and I’m so glad! This book, though a novella, packed so much story in it that it felt like a full length read. Clay and Dell’s second chance felt honest and real. The turmoil of family acceptance also felt very raw and honest. Really well done! Going to read Alan’s story next (I loved him!).

Going Back home & finding love

Clay goes home after years being gone when hos dad calls for help. He needs help save the farm. There is also the matter of realizing the guy he crushed on is available to be with if he can get his self in gear.

Dell finally came out years back to the ones that mattered and now that Clay is back he's hoping he'll stay and give them a real chance at something. He just has to consider his and his son Archie's hearts if doesn't go well.

Thankfully it does by the end. Clay did drive me bot mad at times back and forth on his stay and go. I loved Alan his friend and was relieved his dad came around and was actually concerned he would hurt Dell.

A wonderful read. I came across Andrew Grey novels by accident and I certainly wasn’t disappointed reading this, my first of his books. When Clay came back from Chicago to help his injured dad following an accident, he was scared he was taking a backwards step. He left the family farm five years ago after what he felt was a turbulent relationship with his father. I couldn’t put the book down, it was a wonderful storyline, reminded me of country life I endured in the last century, and yes, romance. I now look forward to reading many more of Grey’s books

A quick read

It’s well written and a short, quick read. Two reasons I didn’t give it a better rating. Both MCs didn’t bother to reach out for five years but they exchanged the L word within a few weeks’ time after Clay’s return. Ok so maybe it’s my problem that I’m not a romantic. But I was so mad when everyone tried to guilt trip Clay into staying at the farm. The guy wanted to go back to Chicago, so let him go! Anyway, Alan was a hoot so I’m looking forward to his book.

I listened to this one and I think I liked the story more than I actually liked the audio.

Clay doesn't have the best relationship with his father, so as soon as he can, he leaves home for the "big city - Chicago". He's been gone years, but when his dad calls and needs him to come home to help with the season's harvest, he's there. When he returns how, he runs into the guy (Dell) he crushed on as a teen. Basically, it's a sweet second chance romance. No big thrills or crazy drama. Just a short, sweet, country love story. Maybe 3.5 stars.

After looking at some of the comments I feel like this might be a case of “it’s me, not the book”. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, so it could be I’m just not used to their writing either.

I found I had a very hard time getting into the story and the characters didn’t seem very believable to me. I didn’t feel invested in Dell and Clays relationship as it seemed forced.

However, the concept of the story was great. If you are looking for a small town “second-chance” romance this might work for you. You never know until you give it a try!

3.5 - I am usually a fan of Andrew Grey and this story had a lot of potential but for some reason I just didn’t connect with it like I usually do his books. Lots of good ingredients, and this author is good at writing cute kids. The short length didn’t bother me either as quite a bit was crammed in. I felt it needed better editing, and although it sounds very picky basic spelling mistakes and incorrect words being used really bug me. I’m giving the 2nd book a try as I want to know more about Alan.

I've always love Andrew's work, City meets Small Town.
This one is no exception, I got a little frustrated with Clay and his father's attitudes. But I got over it fast.
This is a short but sweet story about two men, Clay who returned to help his father out on the farm and Dell, father to a 4 year old. Clay has had a crush on him from since high school. Returning home thing changed fast. And I love the conclusion of their story.
Looking forward to reading book 2.

Meh. More of a 2.5 rounded up.

I like he plot well enough - it kind of reads like a Hallmark movie and, for as much as I dislike actual Hallmark movies, I like these times of plots when they are made queer. The only problem is that I find Clay kind of unlikable. Pretty much the only drama and conflict is him not being able to get out of his own way about anything. (Romance OR family.) Definitely made it not the most enjoyable thing to read.
