With just over seventy people in the life rafts who had survived the EMP on Rose of the Sea, their drifting had finally seen them arrive at an island. But much to their dismay it was completely deserted, so their struggles to live continued. With Gunner depressed, in pain from his injury and in no condition to lead, the abrasive, brash and overly confident Zon took over. Zon was a good fisherman which was fortunate as there was very little in the way of food left. He was also strong but had a great way of alienating those around him.
As their numbers dwindled and a nearby island beckoned, it proved to be a better prospect. There was much to find, but also dangers to the unwary. Gabby and Max continued to care for their two children, plus the little orphan, Jennifer. Gladys was stoic but always willing to give advice and medical treatment – as much as she was able. And Gunner’s second in command, Sykes, was forever loyal. But would it all be enough? With just over forty survivors left, Gunner knew they needed to do something to find help; it wasn’t coming to them, so they needed to find their own way to America, decimated as it may be. Could they?
Feral Fate is the 2nd in the Waves of Fate trilogy by Aussie author Kendall Talbot and once again I needed to strap myself down for the ride, suspend my disbelief and fly through the pages. After I finished this episode, I was trying to think of who the most likeable character is – I’m pretty sure it’s Gladys. This is one trilogy which MUST be read in order. Reading out of order will take away the enjoyment, and you will have no idea who the characters are, or what happened to get them in the place they’re in. Recommended.
With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Feral Fate picks up immediately after First Fate finishes. The survivors have made it to a small island somewhere in the Pacific hoping to find civilisation, rescue and hot showers, but they are not yet safe. The deaths continue to mount as they settle into some sort of routine and using skills to fish, gather fruit, find water and build shelters. They are also made to realise the truth. The USA probably doesn’t exist as they know it anymore. The deadly EMP event, that knocked out all communications and electronics on their cruise ship has certainly done the same in the US and maybe the rest of the Earth. It would have caused mass panic, complete loss of life necessities, mass deaths and food shortages. The doomsday preppers are having the last laugh in their bunkers now!
A wrecked yacht gives a chance for a few survivors to set sail to try and find help - will they find some? Will anyone be left alive alive if they make it back?
Another edge of the seat story, the pace set in the first book continues without rest in this the second. I’m not sure I’m game to breathe until the final book comes out. It’s a little bit of the TV show ‘Lost’ (but not as stupid) with a smidgen of Lord of the Flies with Cast Away mixed in. I love how the MCs each propel the story along - and are ALL flawed. But the most flawed character is actually becoming nicer - well sometimes - when it suits him.
Can’t wait to see who makes it through to the end - and what the end will actually look like.
What happens when passengers and ship’s crew are at sea on a cruise ship when someone fires off an EMP bomb overhead? How do people used to tech and convenience learn to survive on a few skills, a few materials and food, and the wild nature of the world in the middle of a vast ocean? An adventure of epic proportions where only the strong and lucky will survive.
Feral Fate is the second high-adrenaline segment of the Waves of Fate trilogy of tightly connected books.
Rather than summarize this second segment and potentially spoiler the series for those who might be interested in starting the series, I will restrict my remarks to a little recap from the first book and talk a bit about the characters, tone of the books, and my thoughts on the writing and over all plot.
As I said in the opening, the passengers and crew of a cruise ship have their lives forever disrupted when suddenly all power is gone- ship power, personal items, communications, pacemakers… everything. They are alone and stranded at sea, but that is just the beginning. A plane slams into the side when it loses power and falls out of the sky. Another ship. And, another EMP bomb. Yes, they figure that much out even as a ship of over a thousand souls is reduced to under a hundred battered, shocked, and starving survivors who must find a way to get to safety and learn how to live in a powerless world that is likely at war. Someone hit the US and America might be in chaos, but that is home and where they want to get.
The story has four primary narrators: Gunnar who was next in command when the captain collapsed dead from his failed pacemaker. Gunnar never wanted to lead and after a brutal time and hesitant decisions manages to get a very few to temporary safety. He is living in his head, in misery, doubt and guilt. He can’t seem to pull himself together so loses leadership of the survivors. But, an unlikely person gives him a kick in the butt about getting back in the game because he can be a difference-maker.
Madeline who was a ship’s entertainer with a secret past of being kidnapped and brutalized and then having her story exploited by her mother and journalists when she gets rescued. The ship was anonymity for her until it was nearly the death of her. Who knew surviving a sadistic captor would prep her for surviving disaster and somehow finding love in the middle of it.
Zon who was a bayou living gator hunter who grew up abused and with very little which toughened him up and gave him skills that make him suddenly a hero to a bunch of pampered citified types that he sneers at even as he gladly fills the vacuum of leadership that the sniveling Gunnar seems to have abdicated. Meanwhile, for the first time in his life, people look up to him and one is a gorgeous Prepper girl who gets a lot of what he is about and respects his skills and tenacity.
Gabby finds herself stripped from her star journalist status and her designer fashions and discovers she hasn’t got much beneath the veneer as a wife, parent, or even a help to the group of survivors. As devastating as everything is, finding out who she truly is when stripped down to the bare may be just what she needs to rebuild into a better person and a strong member of the team. Because, when there is a chance of going for a rescue effort, she has to be someone to be counted on.
The pace of the story doesn’t let up from nature still out to get them, weird secrets on an island, struggling as a group, and find a way to get creative with the resources and survive. While the plot is a definite adventure, it is the sort of adventure that takes these people on a journey of self-discovery as well. Nothing like losing everything and enduring hardship to the breaking point to figure out what you and those around you are really made of. Along with the exterior and inner conflicts, there is the amazing details of life in just such a situation. Finding food, water, how to use available resources, medical needs, and even mental health needs. Learning to read the skies, the tide, the nature around them as much as they used to read their phones and computers. And, that’s just the survivors who now are figuring out that even if they manage to get home that home won’t ever be the same when it is set back fifty years and possibility a world of anarchy by now. It was all as fascinating as the group dynamics, relationships, and adventures as well as times of loss and grief as more survivors are lost in the struggle.
All in all, this middle leg of the story kept up what was started in book one and did its job to set up for the final book. Things are left in an interesting place and the world is now a scary inhospitable place and mostly because the disaster that happened is not all that far-fetched. I can highly recommend this series for those who love survival adventures, disaster stories, and post-apocalyptic situations.
This is the follow-up book to First Fate which I just loved and had me rethinking about ever taking a cruise again. I had high hopes for this book and it did not disappoint.
In this book, the small number of survivors from the cruise ship end up on an island. Sadly, the island is deserted which means they have to use all of their skills to stay alive. Thankfully, there are several in the group that have the skills needed to find food, water, shelter, etc. There is tension between some of the survivors and Zon is definitely a loose cannon. He was in the first book and he doesn't change his tune in this book. The only thing that keeps him going and assisting everyone else is another survivor, Jessie. Perhaps she is using her feminine wiles on him, or maybe she really does like him.
While a lot of the book seems to focus on Zon, we do have more insight into the other main characters. I am still on the fence about Gabby. She is more concerned about herself and the kids than everyone else especially when her husband, Mac, wants to jump in and help everyone else. It is his calling and she doesn't quite seem to understand that. However, she does have a redeeming moment when she realizes that perhaps she is not pulling her weight the way she should.
Gunner is still a leader at heart and he has learned how to manipulate everyone to help make sure everyone survives. I use the word manipulate, but not in a bad way. He can read people and understands what makes them tick and how he needs to approach them to ensure that everything is handled as situations arise.
The death count continues to rise on the island and the discovery of a small yacht gives them hope that perhaps they can still be rescued. No one knows what is going on anywhere else in the world as the EMP has knocked out all communications and even the discovery of HAM radios doesn't raise anyone to find out what is going on in the world. I am amazed at the hope that everyone has that they will still be rescued.
I don't want to divulge too much, but the ending....oh my goodness! It definitely helps fill in a few blanks and leaves you hanging for the last book in this series. I cannot wait to read that one and see how this all ends.
I stayed up late reading this book and could not put it down. I have to give it 5 paws up and highly recommend this series.
Book two in this dystopian trilogy begins with the sighting of an island by the few cruise passengers who have been in lifeboat-pods for all too long. There are numerous obstacles to overcome as the group works together to deal with life as they have never known it before. Survival continues to be the major factor for all as they do their best to provide for their basic needs.
What I liked: * The insight into the main characters thoughts * The family and personal dynamics in Gabby and Max’s family * Gunner’s ups and downs as he works to lead the group of castaways * Zon’s growth as he begins to find his place with the group – he is still a bit of a selfish guy but he has redeeming qualities * The romance that builds between Zon and Jessie * The description of what is necessary to survive * The unflinching look at what it would be like to be stranded on an island * The “preppers” that happened to be there and aware of what might be happening in the world * The positive outlook of some even during difficult days * Thinking about what it must have been like to be on that island and what part I would play if I were there. * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Hmm…having to wait for book three :)
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read the conclusion/other books by this author? Definitely
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
Kendall Talbot, you are killing me. The suspense is so great. The death count continues to grow and the survivors of the cruise ship are no closer to being rescued than they ever were, or so it seems. Then one of the elderly survivors confronts the captain about his responsibilities to her and the other survivors. He does a complete turn around, from being suicidal to getting his act together and developing a plan for a rescue Prior to that there'd been little to look forward to for over a hundred days following the floundering of the cruise ship. The highlight of their existence was the washing ashore of a Maersk shipping container. Even then, they didn't know whether to celebrate or not until they managed to break into it. The deaths that dog them, day after day, are almost incomprehensible. Who would have thought a multi thousand group of souls on the cruise ship could be decimated to fewer than a hundred? Some good things come to the group. Budding love affairs touch a few. Reconciliations touch some family members. New life skills are attained. An appreciation for nature, food, drink and friendship is cultivated. Many characters who had few redeeming characteristics are developing into healthier humans. I Voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Seventy-two survivors left The Rose of the Sea cruise ship after it was disabled by an EMT strike. Landing on a deserted island, they struggled to find food. While Gunner, the captain, suffers guild over the loss of passengers and crew and doubts his abilities after losing a hand, Zon, who seeks control, attempts to take over as leader. Each of the survivors brings something to the group, but they are unprepared for the dangers and their numbers begin to dwindle through poisonous bites, violent storms and drowning.
While Gunner is determined to get back to his family, he has to face the possibility that life back in the US has changed drastically. The EMP strikes suggest an attack on America. The results would be chaos as shortages of food and medicines occurred. When a damaged yacht drifts close enough to retrieve, it provides a way for Gunner and three of the others to attempt to find help. Now leaving thirty-five survivors behind, they set off in hope of a rescue but their worst fears are realized when they finally encounter another yacht and learn the truth, that America is at war.
This is the second of three books and Kendall Talbot continues to provide a roller coaster of a ride. Amid the lush forest and blue waters, danger lurks at every turn. It is a book that is difficult to put down once you start reading. I received this book from the author and look forward to his final book in the series.
This is book 2 in the Fate series. I do recommend you start with book 1, you won't be disappointed. The read book 2 and the roller-coaster ride continues. This book shows just how fragile life can be if the things you depend on no longer work and you have to cope with doing everything yourself. Once you are ship-wrecked on a deserted island, can you back to civilisation, if indeed there is any of that left anywhere. Kendall Talbot once again has us on the edges of our seat willing the people to win against terrible odds. I can't wait for Book 3.
This series is very intense. Such a good read. The characters are well developed and as you read what they think and do you love and hate them. Against all horrible odds these survivors have to deal with survival, death and relationships with total strangers who have to work together. I am reading the final book in the series and am actually afraid of what will happen to the remaining survivors. What a tribute to this author for such an engaging story line.
The second entry into the Waves of Fate series does not disappoint. The group have made it to a small island and the problems never stop, from an insect bite death to bombs going off while walking. Don't want to give away any spoilers but this book is action packed edge of your seat nail biting.....you don't know what will happen next. You'll cheer and weep right along with the amazing characters portrayed in this book. Buy it, you won't be disappointed. I just can't wait until the next installment is ready for reading. Great job Kendall!
So after they make it to land, things are not quite as they seem. Kendall continues to build her characters and the story. What is hard for me is too stay up all night to finish the second book and then having to wait for her 3rd book. Kendall is a tremendous author and someone you will never be sorry you read.
Book 2 was not a disappointment in any way. I felt as though I was right there with the survivors, feeling their struggles and accomplishments. I can’t wait to read the final installment!
I couldn't put it down. I'm rooting for the characters and hoping for the best. I am hooked. If you like 'end of the world as we know it stories' read this and Waves of Fate#1. Thank you.
Solid 4.5 star They are all finally on solid ground but the survivors are basically out of the frying pan and into the flame, just because they don't have to worry about massive storms and other ships crashing into them it doesn't mean life is any easier. There are still losses to be had, small wins and hope, while relationships fracture and build and they hold on to a sliver of hope to keep them going. I have to say I felt really bad drinking water and easting while reading this!! 🤣
Wow. Just wow! What a mind-blowing rollercoaster of emotions that was!!! I had high expectations for this (as I LOVED First Fate) and Feral Fate did not disappoint! The hits just kept coming! What will Final Fate bring??? Can't wait!!!
Book two blows it out of the water literally! It was a fantastic read! The characters have developed well, I found myself groaning at their mistakes , cheering at their accomplishments and cringing at missed opportunities! This series is only getting started!
Good story, rough language if that’s important to you, it is to me. Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2025 I I borrowed the book from the library. I read book 1 and thought it fantastically good. I’m disappointed a bit in book two. Zoe is a character to hate, and for good reason. His mind is filthy, his attitude is filthy and he is a disgusting person. I can see the author changing him into good because of love. But realistically that rarely really happens. I was a lot put off by the language in this book. It wasn’t present much in book one and didn’t need to be so prevalent in book two. I almost put the book down. The story line is very good. I think it can be told without the filth. I’m holding back 2 stars because of the unneeded disgusting filthy language and gross portrayals of Zons thoughts.
While I am not a keen apocalyptic survival adventure reader, I do love adventure books. Yet now I feel that The Waves of Fate Series by Kendall Talbot has set a high, high standard for any of the apocalyptic books to meet. Starting exactly where the first book ended, Feral Fate the second book where land is seen but not yet walked upon. Oh, the naive hope.
From the first book there are the characters that you have come to love and those that you love to hate too. All are still trying to survive while making the decisions that directly affect others. The hopefulness and the hopelessness are like clouds that spread over the survivors. Written so that you feel as if you ae there going through the ordeals and unrest as they do. It is impossible not to have understanding and empathy as Gunner works for redemption from a past secret even after a debilitating injury. Then there are others for whom it is difficult to have any empathic thoughts.
Life on the island is not the civil world that these people left behind when they embarked on the cruise ship, and yet in some ways, life moves on. Events happen that I could never imagine but are entirely plausible and convincingly likely to happen. What a great creative mind the author has.
I wrote about First Fate that, “The story is unbelievable believable so that it is both hopeful and scary at the same time.” Also still true in this book as the few survivors fight to find some type of normalcy. However, now instead of scary it is horrific. Named correctly Feral Fate with an emphasis at times on feral.
As for the ending, very few answers that make sense are given but many more questions are asked. Have those four found a savior or the devil himself? What of the others behind? Their letters are so symbolic; their lives and hope cannot be forgotten. The conclusion leaving you handing so that you are begging for the third book in the trilogy to be released soon or better yet right now. I don’t think I have ever wanted to read a book as much as I want to read the next and last book in The Waves of Fate.
The publisher/author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“Feral Fate” is the ADVENTURE that Book 1 promised to be, yet fell flat in so many ways. This second chapter of the story is fast-paced, surprising, offers a great sense of anticipation, interesting “action” scenes, & has reached its potential as a semi-gritty apocalyptic novel - not simply a ho-hum, “romantic travel tale,” like last time around. I took a chance & figured I’d read a little bit of Book 2, yet NEVER imagined I’d finish it, let alone love it! What made it especially great is the author trimmed down some of her writing - repetitively - about the character’s traumatic pasts. The author did this to a fair degree with almost all of the characters; it’s more balanced out this time, so not totally in your face constantly. Yet it’s still annoying & frustrating to reread the same basic sentences time & again. Except for one character. And you already know who it is if you read Book 1. Her plot last time around was 30% new material as the book moved forward & 70% regurgitating the same stories (from when she was a child) over & over. In Book 2, it’s probably 40/60. She’s one of THE MOST annoying characters ever. It’s a shame too. As the author may have wanted her to be perceived as an, “extra strong” survivor, or serve as an inspirational type person. When all she really comes across as is a victim still actively living in her past trauma/never healed for a moment. Cannot have a healthy relationship with either gender. Trusts no one, including herself. Etc…. And if she does indeed fall from a boat & goes missing, will anyone truly miss her? Readers included? (Personally, I’d be relieved. Her chapters- urgh. It’s like Groundhog Day X 2 books!) So! On to Book 3! As well as edit my Book 1 review. It’s worth the slog through that 1st part of the series to get to this book. My fingers are crossed the author kept up the realism & momentum for Book 3!
Ok, so I've read all 3 of this Trilogy now and I couldn't put these books down! They were absolutely thrilling and quite a nail-biting experience. Each of the characters had their own stories going on in the background and had to deal with so much baggage from their pre-apocalypse lives while having to learn how to survive being literally thrown into a world with chaos & death all around them. The scariest part of these books is the thought in the back of your mind that these things could actually happen and the world, as most people know it, would be thrown into something so chaotic it's difficult to comprehend. It appears the author has done a LOT of research into the effects of EMP strikes on a world that wholly depends on electricity, communications, infrastructure, satellites & clean water. I absolutely loved the main characters and especially the Zon, whose personality changes completely as the story progresses. He really gave me some smiles throughout. It is absolutely edge of your seat reading and I totally would recommend these books for people that enjoy this type of story.
The Thriller Continues! After reading Book 1, First Fate, I couldn't imagine how book 2, Feral Fate, could possibly be as good -- but this author just keeps giving it, and Feral Fate is as good or better! It will take you to a place where even Angels fear to tread! Talbot's well defined & unique characters become so interesting, the reader gets to know them well, even amid deaths, destruction and chaos. Her extraordinary believable plot and writing style had me shaking in my boots! I was asking myself, could something like this actually happen in the not too distant future? I wasn't sure I wanted to know the answer! I can't help wondering how this horrifying apocalypse could end in book 3, Final Fate, but I can hardly wait to read how Talbot has handled that one! I'm still thinking this should be a movie or better yet, a TV Series! For me, these first two books add up to more than 5 stars each X 2 = way over 10 stars! P.S. Make sure you read these books in order - this series is just too good not to! Did I mention, I highly recommend it?
Feral Fate by Kendall Talbot is an over-the-top addition to Waves of Fate Trilogy
Kendall Talbot really delivered a nail-biting almost toxic adventure, intrigue and human interest novel in the first book of this amazing trilogy, First Fate. But she certainly didn't hold back with the followup entry, Feral Fate. Just when you thought things couldn't possibly get any worse for the the survivors who abandoned The Rose of the Sea - well think again. Things are just starting to get really interesting! Ms. Talbot must of spent a lot of days and nights creating the many, many disastrous, overbearing, devious and almost unbearable circumstances to place before the slew of interesting and entertaining characters that finally arrive on a totally deserted island.
Ms. Talbot has not only deviated from the path from her usual style but has taken a jump right over the cliff in this must read trilogy. So much emotion flows through her characters (and the reader!!!) that it is nearly impossible to anticipate what could possibly happen next to further deflate the unbearable situations as well as the characters resigned to face... face what??? Pick up a copy of Feral Fate and prepare to be blown away by this exciting (understated!) apocalyptic survival adventure that ranks with the best I've read by any author - bar none!!!
An EMP attack has crippled the cruise ship Rose of the Sea. The survivors had to finally abandon ship after it became caught up on a reef. After several weeks at sea in the rescue boats, they finally made it to land. Unfortunately, it is a deserted island. The dynamics of the group change as the group gets smaller and weaker. The group realizes that if they want to survive they need to work together and use all of their skills. Some people know how to hunt and fish, others know how to preserve what they catch and some have medical knowledge to keep others alive. One day they see a sailboat in the distance and hope that they will be rescued. The sailboat is damaged and the crew is dead. They are able to get it pulled into the bay and were able to fix it up enough to sail and hopefully to find help. The author has sucked me into the story and I feel as if I am there trying to survive with all of them. It makes me think that the “preppers” may be on the right track. I can’t wait for the next book.
The second book in the Waves of Fate series finds the few survivors of the Cruise Ship, Rose of the Sea, finally nearing land after many days sailing in a desolate ocean. They land on an island, which unfortunately, is devoid of man, and even has few animal life on it. Zon, the large Louisiana swamp man, immediately begins starting trouble, and in an effort to bring the survivors together, Gunner appoints Zon as the leader. There are many dangers and tragic deaths as the survivors try to piece together their lives in a hostile environment. The author expands on the main characters, and puts in pieces of the back stories that formed who they are today. This story is a great read that I really enjoyed. My only criticism is that, as it appears the majority of the characters are American, some of the dialogue needs to be adjusted. For instance, as a man who has spent his life in the bayous of Louisiana, Zon would never say, "oy," or consider himself to be a bloke or feel like Father Christmas. Otherwise, it's a great book and I look forward to the next one in the series.
Feral Fate picks up exactly where book #1 ends. Seventy-two survivors of the cruise liner Rose of the Sea end up on a deserted island in the South Pacific. They are all at odds with no one taking a leadership position until Acting Captain Gunner MacCrae steps up. This book chronicles their time on the island and their foray to find help when a battered yacht washes ashore. Alliances form, especially when people realize they may be stuck there forever. The small party seeking help on the waves is finally rescued by a yacht that had been in Sydney Harbor at the time of the EMP strike. When Gunner et al learn that America is truly at war they realize their journey is not yet sealed.
Great rendition of life on a deserted island, Feral Fate comes alive in the last few chapters. Once again awkward wording and sentence structure lost a star from its rating. Purely this reader's opinion. The end sets up book 3 nicely.
Stranded on a Deserted Pacific Island This book is the second in a 'disaster at sea' trilogy. In this episode, the survivors finally wash up on a deserted island. Now, they must survive on knowledge, skills, and wits. And it is tougher than it sounds. This is such an exciting story. Once again, we find out the mettle of each person as they face more incomprehensible situations. More importantly, the survivors find out more about themselves and their own limitations. No one can survive these conditions alone. And no one can imagine what will happen next. This is an excellent series that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait for the final installment. I know that I will read this entire series again in its entirety. I was given this ARC by the author for free and this is my honest review.
The second book in this series continues with the survivors landing on a deserted island. Their troubles continue as they must find a way to survive with no food or shelter. With an amazing mix of characters, this book is as good as "First Fate", but this story delves even deeper into the characters' personalities. More of their pasts are brought in, and you suddenly see how they change with all of the hardships they suffer.
I loved this book, as I did the first! I think the characters become deeper, and the story has just as much action and emotion. I am anxious after the ending, and finding out the third book will be the last, but I will read it as soon as I can.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
These people just need a break, even a tiny one. Feral Fate is a direct continuation of First Fate. The survivors have made it to a deserted island, but they continue to struggle. Some of them have useful skills for survival, some just offer positive words for morale and others follow orders. It’s definitely a tough piece of luck but they make it work. However, from now I will take notes while watching survivor shows like Naked and Afraid. We follow the same characters from First Fate: Gabby, Gunner, Zon and Madeline. There is a swift change in attitude and abilities as their fate unfolds. I’m looking forward to seeing if they get rescued and how the rest of the world is faring. I received an early copy from the author and voluntarily wrote my review.
The second book gave me a bit more character development but not exactly as much as I hoped for. I think I had the idea I would get move of a fully developed story about each like the Lost television show, it dove deep into each person’s individual story and in turn it built up the main story, and I think that is what I feel is missing in this. Also, it also seems to be what could be mystery nuggets being dropped of this island that could be made into something more but not enough to make it that poignant or maybe it is and I’m just really missing the messages. Maybe I’m just over analyzing the book. When the third comes out, I’ll still read it, I want to see where the author is going with this story.
