When Jace Hughes accepts a job to capture and transport a wanted criminal, he doesn’t expect any problems. But when a family of smugglers assassinate his mark right before his eyes, he’s left to pick up the pieces and salvage what he can of the job.
Unfortunately, the real trouble has only just begun.
Turns out, the mark has powerful family… and they just happen to be the galaxy’s most famous Renegade. Now, Jace is forced to face off against one of his own in a battle for his life, but our boy didn’t come this far to get gunned down and fail.
Jace Hughes is a Renegade, and he’ll do everything it takes to keep it that way.
“Human condition is resilient and flexible.” “Family's family, and you stand by them no matter how worthless or problematic they are.” I am so glad JN Chaney decided to write this spin-off Origins of the Renegade Star series. I was sad to see it end but this new The Renegade Origins stories are fantastic and fun to read! It’s like it hasn’t ended at all, and I can continue to go on exciting adventures with Jace Hughes. Trouble always seems to follow Jace. This time, he is forced to face off against one of his own in a battle for his life, the most powerful family renegades like him. There’s even a western style quality to it that reminded me immediately of a certain Gary Cooper film. A lushly drawn, intricate, and action-packed world, all while deftly balancing a huge cast of awesome characters that has left me hungry for the sequel. Hopefully there will be many, many more adventures, with more action filled, nerve wrecking moments like these first two books in the series!
Great writing as always! Enjoyed the renegade vs renegade battle. Lots of action, and seeing how our favorite renegade got started and even then had principles was nice. Read this!!!
Jace is back and he is having some trouble with a legend.
Not much new is added to this series, as to how the universe operates or the inhabitants of it. But we do get a new adventure and a really fun time.
New gadgets and new complications keep this book going. As well, new characters/side kicks are along for the ride. This is definitely a fun sequel that build on the first.
Luke Daniels is back, narrating, and doing a great job. He really brings this story to life and is a pleasure listening to.
All in all, a great book 2. I see there is no book 3, so I guess I'm off to the next series. I look forward to it.
There was some character growth with Jace, he was far less of a prick than the last book. With the exception of Ollie and Siggy, every other character in this book was unlikable. Colt was a joke of a Renegade, about the closes thing to an actual Looney Toon villain. The Connor siblings were too consistent in their portrayal, but none of them were likeable. This whole book was OK at best. There has been fat better stories and characters share in this universe to give this book any more than a solid 3 stars.
The Deal is about 4 years later than the previous book and Jace is still "Renegading". Everything is going well for Jace... his spaceship, the Renegade Star, is payed off and he his job as a Renegade gives him the freedom to galavante space on his own (although there is the ever present Sigmund, his ship's AI).
This book is about on of those Renegade jobs gone wrong and the consequences are far worse than Jace just loosing money for this job.
When Jace Hughes, agrees about to accept a job, everything changes when an assassin takes him out. Unfortunately for Hughes he is a relative of the most feared renegade c in the entire universe. Now, there is a target on his read. Another excellent read in this series!!
Jace Hughes has gradually built himself up as a renegade to be contended with, but he’ll need all the skills he’s acquired over the years if he’s to survive what’s coming for him. As with book 1, almost everything in here’s great. The characters, story, dialogue. Really if I had any complaints, it’s that the villain isn’t smarter, clashing with his notoriety, slightly.
Chaney delivers again! A little more of Jace Hughes backstory here. Flushing out a personality that has rapidly become the mainstay of the Chaneyverse. This book is a great read even as a standalone novel. I highly recommend it. Adventure in swashbuckling set in space in the vein of Firefly.
Crazy thrill ride. You never know what's going to happen next! Have has survived against all odds and by sheer stubbornness and a Hughes will to survive! Edge of your seat excitement!
