I get off on tempting fate—until the day I make a reckless misstep that claims three lives.
The Alaskan bush offers the perfect opportunity to overcome survivor’s guilt and find peace: Live off grid in seclusion where a mistake only threatens one life—my own.
My only tie to humanity is a feisty bush pilot who hates everything I am. Even though the connection between us blazes like a forest fire, she’s determined to keep her distance.
The backcountry has other plans, however, and I end up with her life in my hands.
Unknown to me, there’s a tenacious huntsman on her tracks, shadowing her every move, and one wrong choice leaves her vulnerable.
He takes what's mine.
A wild beast rises inside me, and the hunter becomes the prey. I will level mountains, fight the untamed wilderness, to save her—even if I leave a path of carnage behind me.
Spicy romance author Lynn Burke believes everyone deserves healing and a happily ever after. She loves writing hot, inclusive stories of various pairings or triplings and creates characters who will steal your heart.
She is a USA Today Bestselling author, a wrangler of her three spawn, and a farmer's daughter who grows organic food. To escape reality, she hides in a quiet corner with her nose in a book.
This book was solely picked for the awesome sexy cover and I got introduced to this fabulously skilled author- Lynn Burke. She's seems brazen and forthright as a writer. Not holding back on the grim details, she lays out the well researched plot for us to consume and accept warts and all! What a fresh approach and what a marvelous piece of writing!! The whole story is a one big adventure, one that Brock Charran embarks on.
"Need to prove myself kept me driving away from Fairbanks, a lone cabin, off-grid and out in the woods, my final destination"
He's a man running from his own shadow, own reflection. A man can survive a fall from the highest mountain but he can't survive his soul's fall. So he ditches his worldly life and plans to hide far from the madding crowds, in quietude of wilderness where he needs to quiet the din of the loud accusations clamoring in his head and heart. But he forgets that the back breaking boulder lies in him, there's no escape. Until he sees and indulges in a night of passion with Jessie Blackie as his last hurrah!
" high and dry without a damn goodbye"
She's got a plane load of problems herself. A fledgling trying to fly, hedging off predators of the sky, trying to hide in the clouds as the troubles on earth just keep on coming trying to knock her down
"I'm Strong enough on my own, I will stand on my own two feet. I will see things right by my dad"
Two broken people, two halves of the same coin, their union was lauded & cheered by me loudly!! I'm thoroughly impressed by her style of writing which bares all grim and gruesome, much to my dark addict delight.the scenes of bear kill and other crucial encounters with other predators were not held back in dreadful details.
And she's generous to a fault too I devoured the bonus epilogue and was so in love with Them finding peace and freedom at last 5 stars for Feral Minds and Wild Hearts Follow me on: Email🌻 Bookbub 🌻 Twitter🌻 Instagram🌻 Blog🌻 Facebook🌻 Amazon 🌻
Wilderniss was a rough story to read, and not just because of the emotions Jessie and Brock went through before finding their happy after. Both had stuff they needed sorting out,Brock because of a fatal plane accident he was the pilot of that killed 3 people that were near to him,and Jessie because of Colt,a man that for some reason hated her family, and who tried to force her to fuck him in order to be left alone. Jessie was too smart to give in,and her stubbornness was making things worse by the day…. After Colt’s latest stunt, she needed to cool off,and that stranger at the bar was the perfect solution. Only, when she arrived at the airport to fly a client to the wilderness the next day, guess who was there? Right, her one night stand,Brock! All he really wanted, was to live in solitude after everything that happened. Alone,in the wilderness,he would be responsible only for himself, and not have to worry about anyone else. If only he hadn’t slept with the vixen that turned out to be the pilot to get him to that wilderness…. Getting her out of his system proved harder than he thought….in fact it turned out to be impossible. And even though she first thought of him as another spoilt rich boy like Colt,Jessie found she couldn’t get him out of her system, either. But trouble was brewing….from different sides, and they both would have to go through a lot more before they could finally enjoy their happy after.
A good story, one that held my attention. With likeable characters, and a good plot. And,a word of warning,a few dark moments that might prove to be a little too much for some…..
Man I had so many problems with this book and almost tossed it about a third of the way thru. Then decided I needed to finish it to see if it got better. It didn't. Trying to think about what to write for my review without putting out spoilers.
I read a ton of "romance" novels whether they be regency or paranormal or thrillers or mysteries. I just like a great story where the hero and heroine also have a happy ending. All kinds of settings and all periods in time. A significant chunk of those have graphic sex scenes, as did this one. There was just nothing romantic about the sex in this story. And the passion felt faked as if the author was so busy talking dirty to us thru our couples mouths and inner voices that we didn't get to feel the real emotion in the scene. And, I didn't want the level of "talking like a sailor" these two did. Took me out of the story too much. Or I'm just too freaking old fashioned. Both characters said too much of the wrong things and thought too much of it. Was like reading a Penthouse mag story instead of a romance. So much so I had to stop and see if the author was male or female. Yeah I know. A woman has just as much a right to write exactly what she wants, I'm conditioned to read that kind of writing as being from a man for a man. So it turned me off. Not only that but I'm used to seeing content warnings on books so readers are aware. There are none on this one so I'm going to add it.
Pedophilia. Animal cruelty. Sexual assault.
Your mileage may vary.
I read a lot of reviews now where the reviewer will add content warnings. I got to tell you this book needs them with a capital CW. Since the author didn't put it out there and it's not in the published reviews I'll provide some. Sexual assault. Animal cruelty. Pedophilia. I'm trying to think what other lines were crossed but still just reeling from the disaster that was this book.
This was a very unique read. The author didn't waste any time getting you right into the story. I loved the feral male aspect, living off the land, off the grid. I loved that both characters had internal struggles to overcome. What I could have passed on was the graphic descriptions of certain situations (not the sex scenes, loved those). However, I do see how some were relevant to the story and helped build the momentum. I'm just a bit squeamish I guess lol. Wilderness was my first by this author. Good book, well written. I'll definitely read this author again and I look forward to the next book in the series.
What an adrenaline rush!! My first time to experience Lynn Burke’s books and I was sucked in right from the start!! Wild and rugged!! Had me on the edge of my seat!! Full of angst and chaos! Hot and wild!! Incredible journey!!
If you like reading about explicit sexual acts then this is the book for you. Most of the story deals with the 2 leading characters having explicitly described sex. Yes, there is some drama in the story, but the majority of the book is them having wild hard sex. The description of the book says it's about a man running away from his past in Boston, and living the life of survival in wild Alaska. That is why I bought this book. Unfortunately, that is not what I got.
This is the second book I’ve read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Our main character Brock is tortured by the thoughts plaguing him after and accident claim three lives, but spared his. As a way to repent he chooses to escape to the Alaskan wilderness, but meets Jessie right before he’s due to depart and now he can’t stop thinking about her.
Wilderness was raw and emotional with interesting characters and backstories. Their no strings relationship turns into more as sparks fly. I loved the world building, character development, and top notch spice. I’m looking forward to reading more by Lynn Burke!
What to expect: 🌲 Dirty Talk 🌲 Close Proximity 🌲 Dark Romance 🌲 Romantic Suspense
Do you ever finish a book and just think wtf? Like that's literally my only thought after finishing this... What in the ever-loving hell have I just read? I saw this was a dark romance but it's about the weirdest dark romance I've ever read because I would say the romance itself isn't dark or taboo... But just everything else about the book is. Don't get me wrong, the writing was amazing, the sex was just incredible and the first 20% of the plot was decent...but I can't say that I enjoyed reading the rest of it. It was just too weird. And I love reading Sci-Fi romance which is just glorified alien porn so I can deal with my fair share of weird but this was another level of weird. Like eating raw hearts levels of weird. The characters were good for the first little bit when they were themselves... Before they devolved into the weirdness the wilderness made them. And the ending? Is no one going to talk about what they did? Seriously no words to describe this book. I'm tempted to read from Lynn Burke again cause as I said the writing and sex were great... It just got a little (okay a lotta) weird along the way.
Also, this had literally no content or trigger warnings! This needs to be rectified ASAP, luckily I can deal with a lot but some of the topics are seriously warped and need to be easily found as TW in case that is something that a reader wants to avoid.
TW: Sexual Assault, Pedophilia, Incestuous themes, and Animal Cruelty. Also it was quite graphic in the gore description so if that's not your thing watch out!
Many years ago, after getting my master's degree, a work opportunity sent me westward from NYC to Anchorage. While the job didn't happen I fell in love with Alaska. And ever since I have dreamt of the wildness contained there. There is something unbridled almost feral about its landscape, an internal heartbeat that pounds out a predatory taboo declaring to all who tread upon its lands that it is not afraid to cannibalize those who trespass against it.
Being there prodded some of the darker parts of my soul while simultaneously envoking a level of peace within me I haven't felt again in all the years since. Until now, as here with her book "Wilderness" author Lynn Burke has somehow revived longings from so long ago; a wildness gone dormant but never truly forgotten within me.
This first book of her Midnight Sun series is the riviting story of Brock and Jessie. Brock being a wealthy adrenaline junkie from Boston. A man known for his fearlessness, almost arrogant regard for bigger and bigger adventures in life. Adventures that catch up to him in one horrific moment costing three people their lives, and in the aftermath sends him running to the wilds of Alaska to deal with the survivors guilt fueled demons the only remaining way he knows how, in complete solitude. And Jessie, an Alaskan bush pilot fighting like hell to restore her family's charter company to its former glory after her parent's deaths lead to stunning revelations about her father that leads his legacy to be taken out from under her and handed to a competitor. An experience that leaves her angry, emotionally closed off and filled with fiery determination to make it right and reclaim her father's legacy on her terms.
What follows is a powerful, at times overwhelming tale of fate, human brokenness, and the ever enduring fire of the human spirit. A story of how sometimes we meet the right person, at the right time. Someone the universe knows can bear the brunt of our damage, even when we don't want them too, and together endure the suffering in order to come through to the other side more whole than when we began.
It is an all-encompassing, almost erotic tale of human hearts burning hotter than the sun while their souls fight for emotional purchase. An unflinching, primal tale about the need to strip one's self down to the very marrow, to the most raw and vulnerable place within, and bleed in order to truly heal a tortured soul. It is a richly layered tapestry of human need and rawness so overwhelming at times you feel as though you may drown beneath it's depths.
The chemistry and connection between Brock and Jessie is beyond magnificent! The care they afford to each other, stunning. The humor and wickedness between them, sexy and inspiring. I loved every single word of it!
This was my first foray into anything written by Burke, but I can honestly say it will not be my last.
If you like a down , dirty, sometimes rude and definitely Dark story than this one is for you!! Wow!! I could not put it down!! This has encompassed ALL the feels! Make sure you have provisions because you are going to need them. In between the dark depravity there are light moments. Moments when love shows thru like a bright beacon. The two main characters Brock and Jessie were not looking for love nor did they think they needed it until it fell in their laps. The question is, for Brock, is love enough to solidify the peace he’s looking for down soul deep after a tragedy left him feeling so unlike himself?? Jessie is an independent woman with no need of help from anyone, especially a man to stand on her own. She has a business to get back on track after her dad died and left it a mess. She also has a stalker who has plenty of means that will stop at nothing to have her. She has refused him at every turn. Making him mad and frustrated is not the best idea but she will not give into him ever! As much as she doesn’t think she wants love, she finds she just might need it deep down in her soul too. You will have to read this story to find out what happens in the willy wags bush of Alaska and the hearts of Brock & Jessie. There were times when I had to close my eyes and take a breath just to prepare for what was coming next! It totally blew my socks off! Please read the warning then dig in! This book is so worth your precious time and hard earned money. Hold on tight for this ride!
"My heart raced when his cabin came into view, and I flew in low over the river straight toward his home as though I wished fate intended us to crash into one another once more. A sense of impending tragedy shivered down my spine, raising the hairs on my arms, and I lifted away from the river, buzzed his clearing, and caught sight of him at the brush's edge-shirtless and covered in blood."
Brock Charran rolled into my wilderness to stake a claim and sort out his rich-boy past. I'll just fly in and drop his supplies and go. No strings attached like we agreed. Huh! I should have known I'd never be the same after that night. Jessie Blacke has rebuilt her family's flying business on her own constantly fighting against the past and some grudge against her father. The bills keep coming and the harassment never ends. Her next move will alter the course of her life and Brock's beyond anyone's imagination. Lynn Burke takes us on a devastating journey that will raise the hairs on your scalp and make you cringe with revenge. I found myself cheering inside for each character as they fought their demons to the bitter end. Jessie and Brock are heroes of strength, wickedly sexy, and unforgettable!
I'm not going to rate this book. I DNF'd this book at chapter 15, about half way through. Porn with plot books or insta lust stories are not my cup of tea. I want to feel some type of emotional connection between the MCs and I didn't feel a real one with this book.
Don't get me wrong, the author writes smut really well. Also one night stands that turn into something more can be really great plot points in a romance.
Most of this story had Jessie amd Brock living separate. She's a struggling Alaskan Bush pilot and he's a rich boy from a big city that bought land in the wilderness to escape it all. They have a 1 night stand before Brock learns Jessie is his pilot. They get off on the memory of the sex until they see eager awhile later and instantly fall into bed again.
If you are looking for wild sex, this maybe for you but I just couldn't connect to the characters or any connection beyond a physical one.
I've know this book was coming for awhile and let me tell you, Lynn Burke has done an outstanding job with the writing of Brock and Jessie's story. Both of these characters have pasts they are running from or trying to forget when they cross paths. One night together and they go their separate ways. But fate has a way of throwing people together. Full of emotion, drama, mystery and a person who is stalking Jessie, they must come together to stop or get rid of the threat!!!I was on the edge of my seat flipping the pages as fast as I could read. What happens is something I didn't even see coming. Ms. Burke has some "dark" in her that totally fit this story. Now it's got me excited for the next book in this series. Very well written with two main characters that will suck you into the story!
Phenomenal Adventure and Getting Beyond Adversity Story!!
Brock is an adrenaline junkie. He walks away from a horrific accident that kills friends and family. He is going to Alaska to have a solitary existence. Jessie was taught to fly at a young age by her father. When her parents are killed; the family charter business was basically stolen, and now the rich creep Cort is after her.
Brock and Jessie have one amazing night, then realize she is flying him out to his remote cabin. Brock befriends a chickadee and battles a grizzly, and looks forward to the supply run by Jessie. Our characters are both in a bad place, but they relate to each other and a tentative relationship develops.
Pure survival, both in the wild and in the city. Fascinating story which will keep you thoroughly entertained and glued to your seat until the last page!!
**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My first by Burke, I found it well written and entertaining. A tad predictable at points, but a joy to read nonetheless.
The characters were well formed with distinctive characteristics and histories. I liked Jessie's spitfire attitude. I cackled that the rich boy was named Brock, but otherwise he fit the entitled attitude to a rather well-done degree - entitled but principled. Very well written character, even if I hate his name. 🤣
The worldbuilding was well written. The descriptions of the winter Alaskan wilderness were beautiful.
The storyline was enjoyable and sm€xƴ. The chemistry between the two main characters was on point. His feralness, in particular, was 👌. And the finding yourself trope was sweet yet satisfying.
Brock and Jessie meet and decide on a one night stand but fate has other things in mind.
I love that Jessie is such a strong character, she has it hard with trying to continue her business and having a stalker and Brock wants to live off the grid. Again, fate has a way of bringing them together, literally fighting for their lives.
I love how much of a caveman Brock is, they really are meant for each other. When these two love, they love so hard, I’m surprised my reader didn’t burn up. And what a storyline, it was so intriguing that I was glued to the pages waiting to see what was coming next.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I absolutely loved this book!! It was in the top five books I’ve read this year. Brock he’s trying to escape from his demons and took off to the wilds of Alaska. He buys a cabin sight unseen to escape the world he just doesn’t feel comfortable in any longer. But he doesn’t expect is Jessie. She is born and raised in Alaska and trying to keep her father‘s bush plane company afloat and out of the hands of an evil man. These two come with so much baggage in their lives it’s a wonder Jessie has such a confident and laid-back personality. Can they help each other unload some of the baggage in the wilds of Alaska?
Great story, Great characters who actually evolve in the story. Brock(Mr. Rich Man) and Jessie(Ms.Vixen) have immediate palpable attraction for one another, but their pasts keep them closed off emotionally. Hot Protective Growly Alpha Male, meets Sexy Badass Spunky Bush Pilot. I loved going on this wild ride through the wilderness, suspense, romance, angst, murder and mystery. Lynn brought all the feels with this one! There are some darker concepts in this book, possible triggers for some, but still a great read. No cheating, HEA
This is one of the best books I've read recently. The characters were both real with rough edges but still likeable and relatable. The chemistry was hot, and the sex scenes were even hotter. This book has everything; action, romance, sex, wilderness... this book isn't darker any darker than your average Nora Roberts novel, though the reasons for darkness are more scandalous. I couldn't put this down! I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Do you like your books on the darker side? Do you want your heroines to be strong? How about your heroes? Do you like it when they need to live off the grid to deal with personal guilt? Then you’ve found the perfect book! I couldn’t put this one down. Dinner was definitely a fend for yourself night!
Wilderness was the first book I’ve read by Lynn Burke and wow! Ms Burke delivers a dark, twisted journey through Alaska that I’m not going to forget anytime soon.
Brock is an adrenaline junkie who finds himself lost and trying to find himself after a tragic accident. After being a pilot for a good portion of his life, he decides that isolation in the great wilderness of Alaska is a great place to discover himself again. After buying a cabin that has no indoor plumbing, no electricity and is completely off the grid, he starts his journey.
When he comes to the closest town he’s going to see for quite some time, he discovers a woman who gets his blood running for the first time in two years. After a wild night, he leaves her to catch his flight to his cabin. What he didn’t expect to discover was the woman who he just spent the night with is his bush pilot.
Jessie is trying to keep her father’s business afloat but isn’t having any good luck, especially when her competition wants her and her father’s business and won’t take no for an answer. When she meets Brock after another run in with her competition she thinks a night to burn off her anger is just what she needs. She didn’t expect that Brock would be her passenger or that he would be what keeps her going when things get really tough.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from start to end. It’s intense in the best of ways but also has a dark side that may make some feel a bit uncomfortable.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read what else this author has to offer!
I thought this was cute! It kind of reminded me of The Simple Wild in a way. Jessie and Brock bother have personal demons they need to overcome. I love how they helped each other work through those.
I do wish we could have seen their relationship develop more and I wish there was an epilogue.
This was so interesting, I couldn’t put it down. This is my first book by this author. I enjoyed the back and forth these two had. He was broody and she was sassy. The wilderness was so well described. It makes me want to go camping. This book was so sexy. I enjoyed those scenes a lot. I’m going on to book 2. I highly recommend this book.
Brock gets off the grid to escape the repercussions of a plane crash that killed three people, one who was his brother's fiance. He meets Jessie, who has problems of her own. But they strike a cord of need in each other. Set in the wilds of Alaska.
Haven't really got much to say about this book. Part of me was like it was okay, then the other part of me is like I didn't like some of the choices the author made so its only a 2 star from me.
Heads up - this is not an easy read. There is a stark contrast between the heat and sexual chemistry that is instant between Brock and Jessie and the cold, stark and harsh environment around them.
Jessie is a bush pilot trying to rebuild her father's business, whilst fighting the man who destroyed it. Brock's stop-over in Jessie's small town before moving to a cabin in the woods, sets their paths on a collision course. Jessie is the pilot that takes his out there.
Living in the wild is harsh but Brock relishes the quiet and solitude following tragic events from his past. Jessie is the one person he wants in his life. But with wildlife, a creepy and disgusting 'neighbour', and Jessie's nemesis all add to the drama.
It is not easy to read - some of the subject matter is sensitive and not to everyone's tastes so read with caution. Some of the scenes are quite horrific. However, it was all important for the story development and added an extra dimension. The characters have to make really difficult moral life and death decisions that will forever impact on your views of these characters. I can't say that I enjoyed this book because it is the wrong word. It was a book that kept me hooked - the characters were interesting and the story had so many twists and turns that I couldn't really put it down. The only reason I would put it down would be when I was sleeping and working.
This is the 1st in a new series and is Brock and Jessie’s story. After Brock survives a tragedy, he decides he need isolation and makes a move to the wilderness of Alaska where he will have total anonymity, and his only contact with the outside world will be the bush pilot who will deliver his supplies. The night before his big move he meets Jessie and there is an instant connection between them, and after a wonderful night he leaves her alone in the hotel room. Jessie is working had to rebuild her family’s business and is a bush pilot, who had acquired a stalker along the way. Neither character is looking for love and the chemistry between them is explosive. This is a well written flawless dark story which is filled with drama, danger, emotions, danger, suspense, violence, mystery, and is a thrilling and steamy read which had me totally intrigued and on tenterhooks throughout. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend for all.
Brock Charran has decided to take to the Alaskan wilderness, escaping the residual horrors of a accident that claimed three lives, including that of his brother’s fiancé, but somehow spared his. He’s seeking his own personal penitence - and certainly doesn’t need complications of the heart from swaying him from his self-imposed solitude. The night he’s due to leave - he spends it with the fiercely independent, and hypnotically sensual Jessie Blacke. Afterwards, no matter how hard he tries, Brock can’t seem to get her from his mind.
Wilderness is a deeply emotive read - which certainly provided food for the senses. The remoteness evoked such feelings of rawness and longing - that in those moments when Brock and Jessie did come together, it was literally electrifying. Lynn Burke is a new-to-me author, and after reading and enjoying Wilderness I’ll certainly be seeking out more of her works.
—>>> A lot happens in the middle-of-nowhere Alaskan wilderness, but nothing makes Brock take notice of life in the moment beyond his misery more than Jessie, the sexy bush pilot who had dropped him off there at his bare-basics cabin the next day…after spending a night with her with no strings attached.
A few twisted surprises are packed into his adventure, so hold on as you get Brock and Jessie’s backstories and follow along on Brock’s isolated sojourn for his soul. Will this rich city boy have bitten off more than he could chew?
