The elderly owner of Mogdon Manor, Victor Hamblyn, dies in a mysterious fire. But was it really an accident? Jack and Sarah are skeptical - The victim's three middle-aged children, who all live in the village of Cherringham, are possible heirs. And possible murderers - Did one of them set the fire?
"Cherringham - A Cosy Crime Series" is a series of twelve self-contained episodes. A new case for Jack and Sarah is released each month.
Sarah and Jack team up again when Hope (Sarah's friend) is suspicious about her patient's death when his old manor catches fire and he is found dead in the attic, the only place no one has set foot for a long time. That was a good one, just one little remark: how come the police never gets in the team's way?
Digital Series. Episode 2: The elderly owner of Mogdon Manor, Victor Hamblyn, dies in a mysterious fire. But was it really an accident? Jack and Sarah are skeptical – The victim’s three middle-aged children, who all live in the village of Cherringham, are possible heirs. And possible murderers – Did one of them set the fire? “Cherringham – A Cosy Crime Series” is a series of twelve self-contained episodes. A new case for Jack and Sarah is released each month.
So its back into the fray for Jack and Sarah, a couple of great characters we first met in “Murder on the Thames”and I was very pleased to see them again!
In this instalment they get together once more to investigate a fire, cause supposedly accidental, but of course its not going to be as simple as that – they are definitely suspicious of the circumstances and there is money in the mix…
I thought this was a terrific follow up, consolidating the relationship between the two at a realistic pace, giving us another intriguing Christie-esque mystery to get out teeth into and certainly making this reader want to keep up with each episode as it appears.
Im a little bit in love with Jack as a character – I look forward to finding out more about him as this continues, and I adore the quirky and fairly unusual developing relationship between the two – Sarah herself is wonderfully drawn and very authentic, especially in her role as a mother.
All in all I would continue to recommend this to anyone who likes a nice quick read for those lunch hours and train journeys where time is limited. And I do like the idea of a series such as this – it gives you something to look forward to and its certainly worth the very reasonable price.
If you love a good cosy mystery but would love to have something you can simply dip your toes into and have a lovely reading experience this is for you.
An old manor house catches fire and it's owner, Victor, is found dead in the attic. Is it all accidental or is it murder? That's what Jack and Sarah set out to discover when Sarah's friend Hope, carer for Victor, senses that something is wrong with the whole setup. Firstly, why would the wonky electrics in the library catch fire when the library is rarely, if ever, used? Secondly, why would Victor be found upstairs from his bedroom in the attic when he had time to get downstairs after he had called in a report of the fire? His three greedy children all have good reason to wish their father dead... though the old manor house needs massive repairs, the land is worth a great deal so the inheritance of the property would be advantageous to each one, particularly as they each think they will be the sole beneficiary. Jack and Sarah have their work cut out for them!!
Another fun, short mystery. There are a few little editing problems in the book (like Sarah calling Jack's dog Brady instead of Riley, and some minor grammar issues) so this didn't get 5 stars.
Interessante plottwist.
Weer een leuk deel in deze serie. Leuk om tussendoor te lezen. Een lekker cozy verhaal. Interessante setting. Benieuwd hoeveel er komen.
"Van je familie moet je t hebben." 3.5 sterren @inge1970reads
I would have given this four stars - I really like the characters a lot, and the story was pretty good - but the writing is just a little bit clunky. My parents recommended this to me, they listen to them as audio books and I bet that works a bit better than reading them. I will get more of these though, they are a nice way to pass the time and also I get to travel in my mind to the Cotswolds (till the day I can get back there for real).
This is the second in the series. In the first one we're introduced to the unlikely partnership of retired NYPD homicide detective Jack and Sarah who's just returned back to her hometown of Cherringham following her divorce.
Here, they're investigating the suspicious death of an elderly man in his run-down manor who had a 'forbidden room' in the attic where he was found following a mysterious fire.
All his children thought they would inherit and they all had motives, but was he murdered or was it an accident?
Jack and Sarah are very adept, between them, in coaxing information out of people and I enjoyed the interaction between them.
I enjoyed the structure of the plot, the authors really pack so much into such a short story, the characters are individually developed, and there were some unexpected surprises, which all made for a very satisfying whodunnit.
Jack Brennan and Sarah Edwards are back for book two in this captivating series. Jack is former NYPD and Sarah is a web designer. Somehow they keep stumbling across murder in their little hamlet in England.
I find this series intriguing because it is unconventional. The text flows well and the characters are spot on and we really come to care about them. That is a mark of a great writer. It doesn’t matter that this book is not very long. You come away with a great satisfaction when reading it that you have consumed a full length novel.
I find myself looking forward to when the body is discovered and who will have to convince whom to take this murder seriously.
Just a great read. I definitely recommend it highly.
This is a very nice, compact, readable story. In the style of a modern day "Inspector Morse" the episodes make you want to read more. Thank you to the writer and publisher for the chance to provide an unbiased review.
I love these short stories. Jack and Sarah are teaming up again to figure out if one of Victor Hamblyn’s children set the fire that took his life. What they did not expect to find was that old Vic had a buried secret of his own.
To back up, Victor Hamblyn, the owner of Mogdon Manor needs a bit of help around the house, the chair lift was not his idea, but the stairs are getting to be too difficult to maneuver on his own. So one evening after his caregiver has gone home, Victor rides up to his bedroom, settles in for the night and that is when he smells smoke. He needs to get to his most treasured possession, unfortunately it is up in the attic and when his body is found, no one understand not only how did he get there, but what was he looking for.
Jack, a retired NYPD homicide detective and Sarah a Cherringham local, start banging about and soon discover why Victor was willing to risk his life. This will leave Victor’s conniving brood stunned and pointing fingers but a hidden chapter of their father's life will be revealed, a love story will be told, and souls can finally find peace.
After just reading the first of the series, I was eager to get on to the next. Whereas the first was a short story, I had the idea from somewhere that this was going to be full length.
Unfortunately this was not the case.
It appears that I have stumbled across a series of short stories and although I am not a fast reader had finished this one in a couple of hours. In the right place I can see, as a short story thats an easy and enjoyable read, it fitting in well and I will keep the next one handy for when that time comes.
For the most part however, I enjoy a full length tale where there is space to explore characters and motives and even to find an odd clue or two to help fathom the plot.
I find it difficult to score this one the same scale as a full novel and so will settle for an average 3*
3.5 stars from me. To be honest, I enjoy this series, I am currently reading a third book and liked it. I read this one during my holiday and I like that it goes straight to the point, does not include lot of nonsense. You still manage to get some surprises in. And you do not need to read these books in the order they were released, there are not any spoilers to the previous books. Ideal from my side. Plot wise, it starts with Sarah's friend does not believe her employer's death was an acident and she has some good reasons for it, like based on where the fire started. And it starts rather unortodox investigation, where Sarah and Jack try to sort it out based on facts and asking around. And in the end coming to the right conlusion about what happened. While in the meantime uncovering some surprises and few family secrets. Overall, its a nice short read. And I enjoyed it.
07/10 Punkte.
This is an interesting series. More novella-in length than a full book but that keeps it quick and interesting. I'm hoping we see some more character development as the books go along. In this book, a manor house burns down, but our intrepid somewhat amateur detectives Jack and Sarah (only somewhat since Jack is former NYPD) are suspicious about it's causes. The two are going to team up to see about a few things including what was hidden on the floor that the manor's owner was found dead on, in a room he forbade anyone from entering. They will also figure out why the owner's children, none of whom seem like particularly nice people were cut out of his will.
A wealthy old gentleman dies when his crumbling mansion catches fire, and the death is ruled an accident. But the man’s caretaker disagrees, and asks Sarah and Jack to investigate. The man’s daughter and two sons each believe that they will inherit the entire estate, and all three have substantial plans for the manor and grounds. But would they resort to murder? Again, this is an interesting pairing - their partnership isn’t romantic, although I suppose it could get there eventually. The mystery is well told, and the characters act like normal people, so I’m enjoying the series.
