Yūki Tabata (Japanese: 田畠裕基, Hepburn: Tabata Yūki) is a Japanese manga artist.
After working as an assistant to Toshiaki Iwashiro, he created the one-shot Hungry Joker, which was later serialized as a full series. After its conclusion, he launched Black Clover.
Surprising new characters are coming up and the MCs must strength themselves within 3 days in order to save the princess of the Heart Kingdom, by 'strengthening themselves', for a certain MC it also includes learning how to control a demon...
It is another good volume for this outstanding series, the artwork is lovely, the story is entertaining though it has broken no new ground, I will stay tune for more volumes.
Obligatory training arc to get ready to invade the Spade Kingdom. Some powerups are along the lines of "work really hard", some are "upgrade my arcane magic to super dee duper magic", but Asta's is a lot more interesting. We get to meet the devil that is housed in his grimoire, see the devil's history, and learn about how they're going to have to work together (or against each other). Yes, it's the Naruto/Kyuubi thing all over again. Yes, this new Nacht character is just Bloodborne guy with additional furry powers. Whatever. At least this volume has an arc to it, and it follows through with that. A mashup of worn cliches and stuff I've seen done before and better, but it doesn't throw any huge cringeworthy curveball into the middle of it. Just some straightforward shonen stuff.
It's like... lesser D.Gray-Man right now. Nacht has that some Yu Kanda-like look to him, and there's a lot more religious iconography stuff.
Oh and all the shadow demon art is a mess. I liked it at first when Asta's sword was fully dark black ink alongside the rest of the manga using more white space and detailed linework. But now we get shadow things all over that are sloppy black and dark grey messes. It's hard to follow, doesn't play to the artist's strengths (which have mostly been large spreads with lots of characters and detail work).
I’ve read these chapters SOOOOO many times but honestly I could read them a 1,000 more times and I’d still enjoy them just as much as I did the first time I read them. That’s just how much I love Black Clover. From the art, to the characters, and so much more. Tabata has my heart and soul.
--Nacht is kind of an asshole, but at least he has the knowledge and power to back up his assholeness. Though seriously, my dude, your squad just watched one of their members almost DIE and their captain get abducted, maybe read the room and not fucking insult everyone? Just a thought.
--The captains meeting was chaotic and I loved it. Specifically how Nozel and Jack responded to the news; Charlotte's reaction is understandable given her feelings towards Yami, but Jack's and Nozel's reactions solidified their internal respect and connection to Yami.
--Speaking of connections, I find it equal parts sad and amusing that a lot of the big, emotional reactions were towards Yami's abduction, not William's. Yes, Yuno gave a grand speech and I loved it, but from what I could tell, Yami's abduction was the main focus. I feel like this could either be interpreted as a) the captains are still dealing with the knowledge that William had betrayed the kingdom and still hold a grudge against him, thus why they aren't as distraught about his abduction or b) none of the captains are friends/ have a connection with William in general, which is completely understandable. Either way, its an interesting detail.
--Asta's priorities are fucking hilarious. As soon as he meets Liebe face-to-face, his first instinct is to thank him for his help, and his second instinct is to get on his case for calling Asta short when Liebe's around the same height. Solid priorities, I love it.
--Liebe's backstory destroyed me. Like shattered me, then haphazardly put me back together, then destroyed me again. Dammit, why can't anyone have nice things in this series?! WHY?!?!
--Asta is 90% idiot according Liebe. Fucking hilarious.
That's all I've got. This was another stellar volume and we are heading into my second favorite arc of the series so far. I am pumped, I am hyped, I am ready for this!
This was even better than the previous volume. We learn more about Nacht, his secret mission, and also the Dark Triad and their goals. Meanwhile, Nacht trains Asta to make him the ultimate warrior against the Devil hosts. This new training arc is definitely interesting and fun to read. I mean I am glad we are seeing more of Nacht at this point. There is also absurd news about the Elves and that is the only thing I hated about this volume. Finally, the anime ended with episode 170 because it is very close to the manga but we'll get a movie about this arc. If you are curious, apart from the last few chapters, the anime ends with this volume.
This is a pretty interesting manga to review - it is not consistently good for me, but I imagine for someone who’s just starting out with manga/anime, this would be consistently good. The series is basically multiple arcs when a bunch of setup work happens, then things go crazy and then resolution. The setup work is usually something I’ve seen very often, so it’s not the best part for me. Things going crazy part is where things improve for me and they continually improve until resolutions. Which tend to be brilliant here. The resolution works because they tend to be emotionally arousing/unique elements are introduced and things getting escalated phase is interesting because more stuff is happening there.
This volume falls in the category of certain threads being resolved (that have been in motion since the very beginning of the series). There are some very emotionally arousing moments as well. All in all, great stuff and the volume ends on both a ridiculous high and a ridiculous cliffhanger.
This series is brilliant (even if slightly inconsistent).
With only a week to save Yami and William from the Spade Kingdom, Nacht begins training Asta to control his Devil power - in the process drawing out the Devil living inside his grimoire. But Asta and the newly manifested Liebe might have more in common than anyone could possibly imagine.
Okay, two gut-punches in as many volumes. I see you, Black Clover. I see you. The beginning of this volume is fairly quiet as it's likely to be in the aftermath of a big battle arc, but the training stuff in the second half and the flashbacks to Liebe's life and explanations of how the Devils work was very, very good.
I can't believe I'm up to date now and have to wait for single volumes to release like everyone else ;_;
There’s not much to say other than I love this series like nothing else. I came here from the anime so I already saw this volume take place but that didn’t take away from the experience of reading it. If anything, it added to my love for this world and the characters. The connection between Asta and Liebe was such a huge plot twist and it was genius! They’re literally twins. This volume just enforced my adoration for Asta too. He is the epitome of main characters—every main character from every genre and media wants to be him. That ending too? I was on the edge of my seat, especially since that wasn’t at the end of the anime. I’m so glad I have the next five volumes because I’m about to go nuts!
We finally get to meet Asta’s devil, and his backstory is not only sad but crucially linked to Asta’s past as well. I still have some questions, but Asta’s mom was such a strong anti magic user that she could not control her powers and had to live in seclusion. Thus, why she has to give Asta up, because if he stayed with her, he would have died. Liebe, being a devil with no mana, was able to stay with her, however, so she adopted him and raised him for a time. But, ugh, the story of how Liebe ended up in the grimoire is so sad, and I wonder when he will tell it to Asta.
Nacht is a bit of an ass, but it’s clear he has his own issues, and he’s powerful enough to back up his attitude.
Meanwhile, all of our main characters are training up for the upcoming invasion of the Spade Kingdom in order to save Yami and Vangeance, and prevent the end of the world.
In the aftermath of William and Yami being abducted by the Spade Kingdom for unsavory purposes, Vice Captain of the Black Bulls Nacht magically appears and explains that they have three days to save the missing captains. Everyone gets a stern talking to about getting stronger fast cause only a handful get to go on the rescue mission, but Asta gets a special training course in which he comes face to face with his inner demon...literally.
We get to meet Asta's devil for the first time and see his backstory and even though it isn't explicitly stated, these two have a deeper connection than any of us realized and I'm ready to adopt both these children.
I am a little tired of the cliché of their being secret members of the Black Bulls and on first impression Nacht is kind of unlikable but his powers are cool and he does bring something new to the table. Also it is really nice to finally get the full backstory about Liebe and Asta's mom and learn about some really key details about the world like why was Asta left at the church doorstep and why does he lack magic. And seeing Asta and Liebe bond is actually really nice and also seeing Yuno get a surprise helper is also really cool and I cannot wait to see how that person has changed since their last appearance.
This volume is one of my absolute favourites. Personally, the way that the author makes us attached to these characters and then uses that attachment towards them to create a heartfelt moment is one of the things that make me infatuated with this series.
( spoilers ahead) The volume itself is about the main character Asta trying to bond with his demon to become stronger, showing us the connection between them and the demon's backstory.
Overall, it was a great book, the illustrations were also very pleasant to look at and the story brought me to tears. I definitely recommend this series to others.
I don’t want to say much about this volume other than….if last volume had the feeling of Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back, this volume has us in the very beginning of Return of the Jedi! I think the art is of course impressive and the story captivating. I loved the feelings that you get along with the dire need to grow stronger. Kudos to Yuki Tabata for continuing to grow not only the universe, but the problems along with the solutions. Learning more about the devils was very interesting to me. Good stuff!
