The unmistakable flutter clack of a vintage movie projector. Dust particles dancing on an intense beam of light. The warm, caustic smell of overheated metal. And there, on the screen, the opening credits of The Alabaster Rose — the film, that according to urban legend, turns good men into murderers.
FBI Agent Bodhi Locke joins his TV star boyfriend Morgan Cooper Young as he heads to Colorado to film an episode of Hart’s Desire at the haunted Bramford Hotel. It’s all spooky fun and games at first as the cast and crew reenact the 1930’s party that led to the death of two silver screen stars. But when Morgan starts exhibiting signs of ghostly possession, Bodhi’s protective streak comes on strong and he’s locked in a fight to save his love from something more dangerous than a pissed off spirit.
The Vertigo Effect is a sequel to Pull Back, but it reads — and is somewhat intended to be — a standalone. You don’t need to have read the first book to enjoy the relationship between Bodhi and Morgan, and there are no hanging or overarching plot lines connecting the two books. However, I did enjoy the first story and do recommend that you give it a try if you find yourself enjoying this one.
This is a nicely moody book to read in October, and for the most part, I enjoyed all of it. It’s fun, the writing is good, the pacing is good, and the characters and their chemistry are good. But, towards the end it becomes clear that this is 100% fiction. Bodhi makes choices that no one in law enforcement, state or federal, is going to make. I can wave it away as, “oh, he’s doing it because he’s in love,” but I think, in this case, story trumped logic and that’s fine. It’s just something to keep in mind if you’re looking for a realistic FBI agent.
I stayed up all night because I couldn’t put it down! Read it all in one sitting. This book had me sucked right in from page one.
This is the second book in the series and while this story stands completely on its own it’s better to read the first book beforehand so you have a better understanding of and background knowledge for the MCs.
Morgan is a TV star and Bodhi is an FBI agent. When Bodhi is injured on the job he has time off and accompanies Morgan to Colorado where they are going to film an episode of his TV series at a haunted hotel where a gruesome murder took place in the 1930’s. The event is completely shrouded in mystery and Morgan is totally taken in by it.
The story keeps you jumping and on edge. Strange happenings are afoot and Bodhi, being a non-believer keeps looking for logical explanations to counter Morgan’s, and others, beliefs that ghosts are present. But so many things are happening that cannot be explained it’s taking its toll. The mystery is well done and when a new, fresh body turns up things really get tense.
I really loved it. The writing is crisp and clever. It kept me completely engaged and I was bummed when it was over. I can’t wait for book three!
**I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion.**
Bodhi Locke and Morgan Cooper Young's second adventure in the Hollywood Endings series is part murder mystery, part cold case and part paranormal thriller. Bodhi, an FBI agent accompanies his actor boyfriend, Morgan, on his busman's holiday. The production team for his TV show and the cast stay at a famously haunted hotel in Colorado whilst using it as a location for filming. It's the site of an unexplained incident decades before that resulted in another group of actors and crew becoming crazed.
The Vertigo Effect can be read as a standalone, but I'd recommend reading the first book before diving into this one to get the full context of the MCs' relationship. It's really put to the test as Bodhi goes into protective mode when Morgan gets embroiled in solving the murders from the 1930's.
I really like the plot which layers the whodunnits past and present. The twists and turns are cleverly presented. The escalating tension, peril and paranormal elements are well crafted and kept me engaged enough to read the book in one go. I'm already looking forward to seeing what's next for the Hollywood Endings couple. 5* for this Bodhi and Morgan mystery.
An ARC was provided by GRR in exchange for an honest review.
A nice mix of tense anxiety, red herrings, provocative imagery, and sexy, gorgeous heroes.
Morgan alone is an overload to anybody's senses; however, a deeply committed, determined, fiercely sexy Bodhi is so irresistible I wanted to squeeze and hug him before turning him back into Morgan's waiting arms where he belongs. These two are the quintessential American M/M ideal for a queer happily-ever-after. Personality -wise, background (upbringing, country, culture), and career path for each man is as different, opposite even, as any two could get. That said, their spark, chemistry, and the way they fit together so perfectly like puzzle pieces - all show how perfectly matched they are, all because although they seem so unlikely a couple, they look wonderful together, feel so right, and are strongly, earnestly committed to work at being together for the long haul. Their story is beautiful; the bantering full of humor and lovely imagery, details (sharp, reflexive recall for Bodhi, and lovely picturesque phrasings from Morgan), and the conclusion ultimately highly satisfying. I've never encountered this writer before, and very much enjoyed her technique and the first two segments of this series. Well done - five stars!
Bodhi and Morgan are perfect together. The way they love each other, are always protective of each other and their relationship, it's powerful. With the trouble that they seem to always find themselves in, their lives will definitely never be boring. This time around they are in a haunted hotel with Morgan's cast and crew to film a couple episodes of his show. I really like the cast and crew, well, not Adele, but the rest are good people. They were very welcoming of Bodhi, and you could clearly tell that they all really liked Morgan. When things started happening with Morgan, they were there to help any way they could. I enjoyed the mystery of the story, trying to figure out what's happening, who's responsible, can this person or that person be trusted. I love books like this. Bodhi being all angry boyfriend/FBI Special Agent towards the end, especially kicking in doors and dragging people around, yeah that was hot. Morgan's new gig as director at the end was hot as well, kinda wish I could've been a fly on the wall. I'm looking forward to what crazy, possibly scary, adventure book 3 will take us on.
I loved this second book in the Hollywood Endings series! (Actually, I think it's even better than the first one.) Bodhi and Morgan are still working on their 'opposites-attract' love story, but it's easy to see how committed to each other they are. When things start to go bump in the night on the set of Morgan's show, the duo investigate. Bodhi doesn't believe in ghosts or the supernatural, but Morgan isn't so certain. Is it ghosts or just someone(s) very clever (and evil) behind the weird things happening on the set and to Morgan. I loved the air of suspense and danger as events unraveled. Strange things happen, and then a murder. Oh, and Morgan is acting strangely. This is an exciting page-turner you won't want to put down. It's not necessary to read book I to enjoy this one. The mystery starts and ends here.
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.
Wow! What a difference between our first introduction of Bo & Morgan and this one. While I enjoyed the last book, this book blew me away in comparison. There was suspense, action, a mystery, continued growth of Morgan and Bo’s relationship, and also love scenes that make you root for the success of the characters with a passion. The author gave us the knowledge we needed to understand the concepts and nuisances in the storyline without adding a ton of boring material that only a researcher would look for. I was guessing until the very end and still found myself shocked at the who and why. This review is written as an honest and unbiased reflection of my thoughts after reading an Advanced Reader’s Copy.
Morgan and Bodhi are so incredible to follow along. There is humor, heat, love, and everything in between. As they go on a trip to a haunted hotel, nothing will prepare either for what happens next. As Bodhi tries to figure out what is happening, Morgan is focused on unraveling an old mystery.
You will find yourself with bated breath more than once while reading this book and it is well worth it. Also, if you haven't read the first one, you won't be lost. Yep, that was me. Thought I had read the first one so dived into this one only to realize I hadn't but was way too caught up in the action.
I read the previous book, and commented that although it was the first story in the series,it read like a second book. I still feel that way, and would like the story of how these guts met and fell for one another.
Still, the relationship between Bo and Morgan did seem real, despite one being a Hollywood star and the other a cop. They work really well together. I enjoyed the mystery, and liked the supernatural edge. I loved the way they stood together, and were always there for the other. Well written, and a decent read, I'll certainly look for future books starring these two.
The sequel has the exact same issues as the first one, but compounded with even worse editing. A very good editor would make this series so much better. I think the atmosphere and mystery are better in this instalment, even if it's a bit and Bodhi acts nothing like a professional LE official. Overall, it was enjoyable but it remains popcorn entertainment that could be elevated with a few tweaks. Nevertheless, I'll keep an eye out for further instalments.
I seriously love Bodhi and Morgan!! This was a great story filled with a mystery and a haunting. When Morgan’s TV show films at a haunted hotel, he brings Bodhi along for the adventure. I loved the haunting, mystery, action, suspense, and passion! I love the chemistry between Morgan and Bodhi. This story line was better than the first book and I loved that one. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advance copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
I’m not usually a big fan of horror or ghost stories so I was a little skeptical going into this one. I loved Bodhi and Morgan from the first story so I was eager to give this a chance. I love the way these two love each other and how Morgan is so take charge and daring in where he likes PDA. He makes Bodhi step outside his box and it’s sexy. I was hooked from the start and really enjoyed this story and I was glad to see how it all was wrapped up. Great story!
A bit of The Shining, a bit of Scooby Doo Where Are You? with the continuing development of the relationship between Bodhi and Morgan. There is a great mix of chills and steam in this one, don't start it at night unless you want to be up reading very, very late to find out who or what is behind the past and present dangers. If you enjoy a great romantic suspense tale and if you are a fan of Morgan Brice's Badlands series you are going to love the two books about these two characters.
Bodhi and Morgan's story continues along. While this can be read as a standalone, you'll appreciate the growth of Morgan and Bodhi's relationship if you've read the book prior to this one.
This adventure of theirs is full of mystery and plot twists and turns with some paranormal elements in the story. I enjoy Morgan and Bodhi's relationship development. The overall storyline is unique, there's romance, there's action, there's mystery and you can't put it down.
The Vertigo Effect by JD Sampson is tge second book in the Hollywood Endings series. Amazing... that's how I describe this paranormal romance/suspense novel... absolutely amazing. Action, mystery, steam, danger.... this story had me fully wrapped up in the drama. Fantastic characters, interesting story... I cant wait to read more!
Great addition to Bodhi and Morgan's story. This has action, suspense and an haunting that just made is a great story. I love that I was on the edge of my seat and with the strange things happening just made me more interested in this story. It is great to seeing how these two relationships grows and I can't wait to see what happens next with these two.
Great add to the series. A shorter read then what am use to but full of everything I needed! Bodhi Locke and Morgan Cooper Young just grab you; and I love their dynamic. Crazy plot and had me guessing what could happen next! Can't wait for more. I voluntarily reviewed an 'Advance Author’s Copy' of this book.
I really enjoyed this addition to the Hollywood Endings series. Full of intrigue, suspense, mystery and so much more, you will be kept on the edge of your seat. Morgan and Bodhi just can't seem to stay away from trouble! It is wonderful seeing how their relationship is evolving and growing. These two together are terrific. I can't wait for more!
Not only do I love these guys, Bodhi and Morgan but the plots and mysteries are great also. These guys have such love for each other you can almost feel the emotions. This story had a mystery that I have never read before and was very intriguing and interesting. I can't wait to get to the next one!
I thought this book was even better than the first one in the series and that is saying something because I really enjoyed it. The author did a great job with combining murder mystery, paranormal, and a thriller all together. I have to admit I had no clue who the villain was. I recommend this series to be read.
Bodhi and Morgan find themselves staying at a haunted house with a tragic past when their stay turns a bit wild. A fabulous whodunit mystery with intriguing and mystifying happenings and plenty of twists and turns, can our duo solve this caper before they fall victim to the previous curse ?
Enjoyed the characters and plot. Pretty fast moving with entertaining secondary characters. Light on the suspense but still fun story. Editing could have been better.
This is a continued series with FBI Bodhi and Hollywood star Morgan. Their relationship grows, love and protection help to keep them safe, along with another murder mystery to solve. Bizarre with a touch of paranormal makes for a wonderful read.
I really enjoyed reading this great, mysterious, fantastic, nail biting, keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat, sexy, amazing and totally awesome addition to this marvelous series.
This was a really well written mystery with a hint of paranormal. I really liked the slow build up to the actual mystery which was further into the book than what you would expect. However, the storyline was very strong and kept me engaged until the meat of the mystery came up. I really enjoyed reading this book and felt like it was better than the first in the series.
