It was just another quiet night in her tiny town when Ember McNair got word that the local security guard at the art museum had been knocked out. A priceless painting had been stolen. Against her better judgment, Ember promised her beau, Cedric, that she would respect his position as sheriff and stay out of the investigation.
But then the painting showed up. Along with a dead body!
Turns out the painting is known to be a *cursed* painting. And someone looked to have stolen it and placed it in the home of the murder victim. Ember knew at that moment that she was needed. Teamed up with Kali (her feline familiar), Sage (her ditzy-witch best friend), and an ancestral ghost, Ember could crack this case before the murderer strikes again.
But what about all those promises to not get involved??
Death by a painting. Another really nice story about Ember and her magical friends. With another bunch of suspects and of course, a killer. A little romance, magic and friendship. And art. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ember McNair was informed that a security guard at the art museum had been knocked out and a valuable painting had been stolen. To keep the peace with her boyfriend, wolf shifter Cedric, she promised to stay out of the investigation and let him do his job as Sheriff.
But a complication makes it impossible to stay out of things when the painting showed up and Dr. Matthew Tanner’s suspiciously dead body is nearby. It appears that the painting is cursed. Whoever stole it put it in Matthew’s home. Cedric can’t solve this one alone. So Ember teams up with Kali (her feline familiar), Sage (her crazy witch best friend), and an ancestral ghost. The ghosts confirmed that the curse wasn’t real, just a coincidence that people buy paintings and people die. Talako, a ghost who hung out fairly regularly at the Broken Broom, had been watching the medical examiner’s office and it was discovered that Dr. Tanner had fought with the killer, had bruising and skin under his nails. So it definitely wasn’t the painting. Ember would have to look further to find the culprit! It is probable that her dynamic team could find the murderer quickly. But what would that mean for Cedric to have her break the promises she made to him to stay out of it?
Once again, there is much going on here to be figured out. The mystery will capture the reader and pile on the excitement as Ember follows the clues! The characters are well-portrayed, and the story line is fast-paced and intriguing! Grab your copy and see what trouble the gang can get into.
After 4 books I have become quite comfortable with the "paws" characters. Very engaging cosy series. I will keep reading the series! The heroine is a bit dim about taking risks, but I like her grounded reality. Cedric, love the name, is stalwart and intelligent, a nice change up from the typical bumbling cop so often found in mysteries. The magic abilities are still vague. And the main ghost seems unpredictably solid at times. And for a series with "paws" in e dry title and a cat on the cover, the cat takes little part in the story. More cat, please! A few quibbles: the artist was Ruebens, the sandwich is a rueben, bodies do not float upstream, if it's hard and cramped under your desk, why not travel up a single flight of stairs to a comfy bed and warm cat for a nap?
This is an entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and a fun and entertaining storyline. Amber is a witch who owns and runs a small pub restaurant in a small Louisiana town. Her family has owned a restaurant for generations and she is the current proprietor. She can see and speak to ghosts and much more. Her best friend is a bat shifter and her boyfriend is a police detective. She also has a knack for solving crimes. On occasion with the help of her best friend or her cat familiar or even the ghost of one of her ancestors and or Her boyfriend the detective. Read on and see how she solves murder mysteries and other crimes in their small Louisiana town.
This mystery had me all over the place. I figured out the murder, but did the same person steal the painting? And why that painting? It was so good! I loved trying to figure out things with the clues given. And the way it ended...just ahhh, so perfect!

When Ember hears about an allegedly cursed painting being stolen and the security guard seriously hurt, she investigates. She had promised Cedric she would stay away from it, however, with the help of Kali, Talako, and Sage, she sifts through the clues. I especially loved when Sage drove everyone batty.

Absolutely adorable! The mystery itself was pretty cool. Not an idea that's been overly used. I do feel bad for the person who killed someone, but also I don't at the same time. Well written and super excited to see how easily Cedric and Ember have come around to helping each other on cases. Looking forward to the next book!
Witty and charming whodunit. Interesting and entertaining characters tell a whimisical and Intrigueing whodunit. Keeps you guessing until the end! Good whodunnit!

I love this series. As soon as the murderer was introduced, I knew the person was the one who committed the crime, but it was so fun watching Ember come to the same conclusion. Predictable? Yes. Enjoyable? Yes.
If you love whodoneit books you will love this. There is an art heist and a murder st the museum. Ember and Kaili are helping Cedric solve the crime. Can't wait for the next one!
Ahhh I didn’t realize this was a full fledged murder mystery. And a very good one. I just thought the cat would have more to do with the solution. But that’s all right. Maybe in the next one.
This storyline was really good and, of course, you didn’t know who did it until you knew more of the facts. I’m really enjoying this series but when are we gonna get to the sister??
Ember McNair is a witch and owner of The Broken Broom, a pub. She is also known as the town sleuth. Her boyfriend Cedric, also a werewolf, is a sheriff. A painting has been stolen from a local museum. But not just any painting. This painting is worth a pretty penny, and is said to be cursed. As the story goes, whomever is in the house that the painting resides will die. The last person to see the painting was Brent Underwood, the guard at the museum, who had been brutally hit on the head at the scene of the crime.
Ember had no sooner set out to start searching for the missing painting, when a dead body shows up. Dr Matthew Tanner was found in his house, murdered....with the stolen painting. Who would have wanted him dead? Did he steal the painting himself? Was the curse real? The even bigger question is, will Ember accept Cedrics proposal?
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. Corrine Winters has become one of my favorite cozy mystery authors. This is just like every other book I've read of hers. It has laughs, light romance, and of course the ever loving mystery. I rate this ⭐⭐⭐⭐.
