A spellbinding new rural romance from the bestselling author of the Callahans of Stringybark Creek trilogy and Fool Me Once.
Jason Weaver just wants to be left alone. It was a tough transition from his army days to civilian life, and he's looking forward to settling into a solitary life.
Tilly Hollis is working two jobs to save for her dream career: running an equine therapy program. Tilly loves her horses more than anything, and after losing her husband and business partner just a few years earlier, she's determined to make it work on her own.
When Jason walks into the cafe where Tilly works, they're immediately drawn to one another. But can they overcome their pasts to find a future together?
Karly Lane lives on the beautiful Mid North Coast of NSW in Australia. A certified small town girl, she is most happy in a little town where everyone knows who your grand parents were. She writes women’s fiction – everything from romantic suspense to family sagas and life in rural Australia. She has romantic suspense titles published under Karlene Blakemore-Mowle and her latest release, Third Time Lucky is available now.
Whenever Australian author Karly Lane releases a new novel I just have to have a copy. Yes, you guessed it, she is one of my favorite authors and the reason is because she puts heart and soul in every book she writes, including this book.
Something Like This is a beautifully written book and it is obvious that the author has a real love and passion for horses in this story. A truly engaging and heartwarming rural romance that I absolutely loved and have no hesitation in highly recommending it to anyone who is looking for their next book to read.
Tilly Hollis had moved from Sydney into her grandparents’ old home at Ben Tirran in New South Wales to follow her dream of running a therapy program with her beloved horses. When her husband David died, Tilly had fallen into a deep depression; it was only when her mother was so sick and needed her that Tilly moved forward. But then her mother had died as well – Tilly needed to get away and the farm where she had good memories of her childhood was the place to continue the dream. Now she was working at the local café as well as training the brumbies – Guy Fawkes Heritage horses – in preparation for the opening of Healing Horses Horse Therapy.
Jason Weaver – ex army, loner and wearing a huge chip on his shoulder – had bought an old rundown farmhouse in Ben Tirran which he was going to renovate. Jason was a builder by trade, but needed the peace and quiet, the isolation, to move forward from where he’d been when he returned home, injured and angry. The day he ventured into the café for some lunch was the day he met Tilly for the first time. He was surly, non-communicative and Tilly decided this stranger wasn’t worth knowing.
What would be the outcome for Tilly’s dream? Would she succeed or was there more tragedy to come in her life? And would Jason find his inner peace? Would Ben Tirran be their sanctuary or a stepping stone?
Something Like This by Aussie author Karly Lane was an excellent read; entertaining, different, emotional and heartwarming. I loved the scenes with the horses – beautiful creatures – it’s obvious how much the author loves her horses. The note at the end which mentions the horrific culling of brumbies in the Guy Fawkes National Park back in 2000 which led to the forming of the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Association, reminded me of how horrified I was when this occurred. The Association is now saving and rehoming brumbies – a much better outcome. Something Like This is one I recommend highly.
With thanks to Allen & Unwin AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
Best selling Australian author Karly Lane’s latest offering in the Rural Romance genre, Something Like This, combines Karly’s love of romance with her love of horses to give her readers yet another unmissable rural romance story. Anyone who has read a Karly Lane novel will know her two biggest loves are horses and romance and Something Like This combines both loves. Even if your not a horsey person (which I’m not) you will love Tilly and Jason’s story. It is more than just horses it is a story of pain, loss, suffering and the power of love.
Through Healing Hooves Horse Therapy Tilly brings together a group of troubled teens, on their last chance, and a few wild brumbies saved from culling. The teens are taught to work with the horses and I’m not sure who was taming who but both boys and horses are offered a new chance at life. It was moving to watch these reluctant teens open up and Tilly’s life long dream come to fruition.
Jason Weaver was planning a quiet life fixing up the old house he had purchased. His time fighting in Afghanistan had left physical and emotional scars and Ben Tirran seemed the perfect place to send time alone. That is until he drops into the local cafe and meets Tilly. Now he can’t keep her out of his mind. Jason is such a likeable character, even when he was being grumpy and disagreeable. I immediately warmed to him and Lane has a remarkable way of invoking empathy in her readers for even the most moody and socially disagreeable of characters.
Tilly is awesome. She has had tragedy after tragedy thrown at her and yet she was vibrant, determined and strong. What an inspiration! Her story will break your heart. Jason and Tilly were complete opposites neither really into what the other liked but their personalities complemented each other and they were both willing to compromise which I thought was a realistic founding for a relationship.
Horses form a large part of the story in Something Like This and even as a non horse lover I was fascinated by the idea of capturing and taming wild brumbies rather than culling. Lane’s Knowledge and love for these wild horses is evident.
In Something Like This Karly Lane explores the healing power of animals. I have heard of pet therapy where dogs are taken to hospitals, nursing homes and schools but introducing horses as therapy was new to me. Other areas explored were small town gossip, genetic diseases, mental health of people with a disability, communities helping each other and working towards a dream.
Karly Lane is firmly on my must read list. *This review first appeared on the Beauty & Lace website and you can read it here
This is a beautiful heart-warming and emotional story that shows how horses and love can make a very happy life, this story opened my eyes to the plight of the Brumbies and let me get to know Tilly and Jason as they becomes friends and then a lot more in a beautiful country town, this was a great story and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them so well.
Holly Tillis has had a dream for a long time to open a horse therapy clinic she truly understands the way that horses can bring the best out in people, how they love and get to trust the humans that are there to care for them. Tilly’s horses mean so much to her and when she loses her husband she carries on the dream working hard to make her dreams come true. Her life might be about to change when someone new walks into the café she works in and there is an instant spark a pull that is sure to lead somewhere.
Jason Weaver has been through a tough time and has decided it is time to get his life back on track, he is a loner and looking forward to renovating the house he has bought in the small country town of Ben Tirran, although when he meets the waitress in the local café he is feeling things that he has not felt in a long time. Of course he finds it hard to communicate and Tilly stands her ground with him, could this lead somewhere.
Jason and Tilly have both been through tragedy they have been wounded emotionally and now is their time to find happiness but of course it is not easy Jason can be very surly but Tilly and her horses are soon working their charms on Jason and it is not long before Tilly’s dream is up and running and Healing Horses Horse Therapy has her first group through, this opens Jason’s eyes even more and after a rocky journey there is a beautiful HEA for all involved. This is a story that I would highly recommend, getting to know about the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Association was a treat and the way these horses help so many people in life. Karly Lane has written a beautiful story that had me turning the pages, there is so much to love in this one.
Thank you to Allen & Unwin AU for my ARC to read and review.
Despite the devastating loss of her husband, with hard work and the fortuitous inheritance of her grandparents farm, Tilly Hollis is now on the verge of fulfilling their shared dream to launch an equine therapy program for troubled teens. With just a few more weeks of work at a local cafe, she will finally have the funds to build the last of the infrastructure that will allow her to launch Healing Hooves Horse Therapy. In need of solitude and a fresh start, retired army soldier and handyman Jason Weaver plans to renovate the old farmhouse he just purchased on the outskirts of Ben Tirran, and then move on. He is not expecting to have his head turned by a waitress in a small country town, and it surprises them both when a mutual attraction develops.
Something Like This from bestselling Australian author, Karly Lane, is a heartwarming rural romance set in the the New England highlands.
Tilly and Jason are well-realised, appealing characters. Tilly is a strong and resilient woman, particularly for having endured more than her share of tragedy including the loss of her father and brother in separate incidences as a teen, her husband’s untimely death, and most recently her mother’s slow demise from breast cancer. Jason is also no stranger to death, having served in the army he has lost several friends, and is especially haunted by the incident that cost him his lower leg. Still struggling with his past, falling for Tilly encourages him to look to the future.
I thought the relationship between the two characters was very well-handled, Lane allows them both time to adjust to their attraction to one another, and doesn’t rush the inevitable. I appreciated the lack of dramatic obstacles usually employed to keep a couple apart, which served to make this romance more realistic and relatable.
They say some people are horsey people, while others are not, but even non-horsey people will be moved by the touching goals of Tilly’s equine therapy program, and the history of the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses Tilly uses at her farm. Guy Fawkes Heritage horses (previously referred to as wild Brumbies), found in the Guy Fawkes River National Park in north eastern NSW, were once subject to regular culls to protect the environment, but are now considered to be of significant historical, military and cultural value. The population of this spirited breed is now managed with a rehoming project, and in Something Like This, Tilly combines her therapy program with the need to acclimatise these horses to humans.
An engaging story, set at a gentle pace, told with genuine warmth for her characters and setting, Something Like This is a lovely and eminently satisfying read.
‘The way she saw it, life handed out the cards and you played whatever hand you were dealt. Still, she could understand people needing some kind of comfort-any kind, really, in times like this.’
Something Like This marks the sixteenth novel from foremost rural fiction novelist Karly Lane. With echoes of the past, passion projects, acceptance, second chances, trust and support running through Karly Lane’s latest, readers will be visibly moved by this poignant tale.
With two leads with broken lives heading this new title from the bestselling author of Fool Me Once, Something Like This is about the careful plans we make and how these well made intentions can be derailed. We meet Jason Weaver, a former solider who is seeking solace and meaning in his life following a tragic accident, that has left him with a significant physical loss. A move to the small town of Ben Tirran in the New England highland region is Jason’s attempt to achieve a sense of acceptance in his life, following his past trauma. Meanwhile, female lead Tilly Hollis is one hard working woman, toiling through two separate jobs in an attempt to mask her pain and build on her dreams of building her own business. With hopes of establishing an equine therapy program, drawing on her adoration for horses, Tilly wants to make a difference. But when these two tortured souls cross paths they cannot fight their attraction to one another. With the past, present and future bearing down on this couple, can they make a go of things?
As a long-standing fan of Karly Lane’s work, I was eagerly awaiting this new release. I follow Lane on social media and I know how passionate she is about horses. Something Like This is a story that allows Lane to channel her love and appreciation for horses, in particular the Guy Fawkes Horse Heritage program, which forms a significant portion of her new book. I know I came away feeling a lot more knowledgeable about these horses and their enlightening history. I was also inspired to do some online research on this subject, which further enhanced my working knowledge of this highly interesting topic.
Not only is Something Like This a wonderful and touching tribute to the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses project, it is also a heartwarming rural romance. We have two rather broken leads, each with their own past history of loss, grief, trauma and tragedy haunting their present day lives. I felt Tilly and Jason were carefully realised on the pages of Something Like This and we received an excellent insight into their feelings via Lane’s thoughtful prose. My heart went out to both Tilly and Jason, as each has clearly suffered deeply. Tilly in particular is a stoic and determined woman, despite the heart wrenching past experiences she endured in the form of the deaths of two family members, her husband’s shock loss and her mother’s battle with cancer. However, Tilly remains resilient and persistent in her pursuit of establishing her equine therapy business. I admired Tilly’s resolve and approach very much. My sympathies were also directed to returned soldier Jason, a man seeking to establish a sense of calm and acceptance in his life. Through Jason we learn of the impact of PTSD on returned soldiers and we gain an insight into the life of an amputee. This was handled with a great deal of respect and sensitivity, thanks to Lane’s delicate prose.
The romance in Something Like This takes an instant attraction route and I really enjoyed this gentle pathway to love and happiness. There are some issues that our leads contend with along the way to their final union. Lane treats the romance side of her narrative with plenty of realism, intuition and passion. Both sides of the relationship was explored in a balanced format. This allows the story to delve into Jason’s anxiety issues related to his physical injuries, to Tilly’s reluctance to let go of her past losses. It is a tough road travelled, but it is well worth the journey.
With the stunning background of the rural based New England highlands illuminating Something Like This further, Karly Lane’s latest is an embracing tale that will appeal to all readers.

Something Like This is book #4 of the 2021 Australian Women Writers Challenge
Thank you to Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review. A warm hearted love story that gives the same feels as a strong tender hug. Tilly Hollis is working very hard to make her dream of a horse therapy program a reality. This was her dream with her husband until he suddenly passed away. Now she is determined to do this on her own and make it a success. Jason Weaver is left injured after his army days and he wants nothing more than to be left alone and live his life in peace. Recovering from a broken heart and battling himself from the war days he’s not expecting to be bowled over by Tilly. One day when they both set eyes on the other they find themselves instantly drawn to each other but can they both put the past behind them and settle for a future together. Karly is always on my must read list and delivers every single time. As we look forward to and come to hope with each Karly Lane story we get the golden setting of country and farming life, the beautifully portrayed romantic love affair and the heartfelt community spirit. The strong, determined but aching heroine meets the dashing yet troubled hero in a tale of love, loss, life, new beginnings and healing from the past. In addition to the romantic relationship we get a wonderful description of horses and horse therapy, something I don’t know much about and I think is an amazing concept so it was great to be educated more on the subject. While it’s slightly linked to another of Karly’s dazzling reads, Someone Like You, it can still be devoured as a stand-alone. Karly’s dreamy rural tales always will take you away to a time of happiness and love. Two adorable leads, a bright supporting gang and a stunning atmospheric small town landscape make this a must read for fans of the genre.
A story with a big heart. I'm not really a 'horse' person, but you'd have to be stone cold heartless not to be touched by the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses used in this equine therapy program for troubled youngsters (google the horses). What a beautiful thing to do. The equine therapist's romance with a damaged war veteran was very touching, as was the heroine's sister's story. All the feels here, thanks Karly Lane.
Karly Lane is fast becoming one of my favourite authors. She writes heartwarming stories with likeable characters and this one was no different. A lovely story.
Honestly, it’s so boring I keep forgetting that I’m reading it, and will stumble across it days later and have to figure out where it came from and then have to work REALLY hard to remember anything about the story to try and read on a bit.
Something Like This is the latest romance from one of my favourite authors. Tilly has had some unfortunate losses in her life including the loss of both her parents, her husband and her brother. She has returned to her Grandparents farm to fulfill her and her late husbands dream to start a horse therapy business using the wild Guy Fawkes horses (Brumbies) from the local National Parks. Jason Weaver is an army veteran who has bought the property down the road from Tilly so he can renovate and flip the house whilst escaping from society. He wasn't expecting to meet Tilly at the cafe where she works in town and feel an instant attraction. This is a slow burn romance with both characters fighting their attraction and dealing with their own reasons for not wanting to admit their feelings. I really enjoyed learning about the history of the Guy Fawkes history and seeing how horse therapy works. I didn't connect to the main characters in this book as much as previous books though and I missed learning about more of the side characters and the town.
A story of vulnerability, facing your fears, fighting for what you want and believe in, pushing those comfort zones, healing relationships and finding love again after loss.
I did not want to stop listening to this book, it was so captivating and like it was more non-fiction that fiction - the way Karly was able to intertwine so many storyline’s, with characters facing completely different life challenges and the way they were all able to still be relatable to each other was amazing and made for such an engaging story.
It has such an important message around helping troubled teens with equine horse therapy and also using this to help people who have faced trauma and I love coming away from a book where it’s taught be a thing or two and this did just that.
Karly has such a talent for addressing true to life issues and events in her stories and her characters come from all walks of life and you can imagine them being people your could one day, truly come across in life.
Something Like This by Karly Lane has been a pleasure to read. I adore reading Australian rural romances and to experience the budding romances of the lead characters. Karly has clearly done her research when writing about the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses, a knowledge gained from her own experiences with these magnificent animals.
There were numerous off shoots to the story involving various characters and their trials and tribulations. This made for a very wholesome story but it was the lead character Tilly who was always willing to be involved in the lives of others and it is her experiences and emotions that are predominantly described in this novel.
I was very keen to read another Karly Lane novel and am very grateful to have had the opportunity. Thank you Karly Lane, Allen & Unwin and Beauty & Lace Book Club, I have thoroughly enjoyed this read.
Two lost hurt souls come together. One a lady who has lost nearly everyone whom she loved, and is set to get her and her now dead husband’s dream running - a horse rehabilitation place, where she saves brumbies and young troubled people are rehabilitated through their experiences with the horses. The other an ex soldier who was injured whilst in service and he needs to learn to trust again, and to believe that he can have a loving relationship, and doesn‘t need to be so aloof with other people.
Love the horsey background story, love the rural setting, really enjoyed the romance of these two characters. Really enjoyed this book, and happily for me I have two more of Karly’s books in my TBR pile, which have been relocated to the top of the TBR pile.
Tilly and Jason's story. "The Man from Snowy River" ...hint!!brumby horses (I appreciate the research into the brumby horse and the result of change after the culling of them. I remember reading an author some years back with the same theme in her story) I'm not into horses myself but am glad I gave my daughter the opportunity to do horse riding lessons. To me owning a horse is an expensive hobby especially if counting your money(pennies).
The story and characters was a little hard for me to read (on a emotional level as communication with my sister is very poor and I don't know how to change it. Guarding your self in relationships due to failures not sure to risk again)
Karly Lane always has great story lines and characters with a lot of depth in her books, and this one is no exception.
One main character in this one are Tilly Hollis who is working two jobs to bring hers and her deceased husband's dreams alive by running a horse therapy program for people with PTSD, disabilities, and troublesome teenagers following the wrong tracks.
The other main character is Jason Weaver who has recently moved into town in his house he is renovating. He is also starting a building business as he lost half of his leg in the army whilst he was serving.
They lock eyes on each other when he arrives where Tilly works in a cafe in the small town. The big question is will they be able to get past the traumas of their pasts to have a future together?
Another 'read the first page and can't stop till I've finished' book. Karly Lane, your characters drive me nuts until they fast become old friends, well most of them anyway. The small threads of mystery about them woven throughout ensures intrigue. Once again you bring the countryside alive, and I can almost smell the horse poo and hear the snickering of these brumbies. This storyline is so relevant to today on so many levels. But still includes all those comfy reminders of the old days in the bush and how things. were done. I loved this story! 10 stars from me!💐💝 ** ** ** ** **
Karly Lane has done it again with ᏕᎧᎷᏋᏖᏂᎥᏁᎶ ᏝᎥᏦᏋ ᏖᏂᎥᏕ!
This beautiful and endearing rural romance will leave you with the warm and fuzzies! Jason and Tilly are both struggling with their pasts: Jason as a wounded ex service man and Tilly coping with the deaths of her husband, mother and brother. When they meet, it isn't exactly love at first sight!
Whilst the main plotline focuses on their budding romance, the sub plots of horse therapy and sibling bonding is utterly poignant. I absolutely loved the Australian patrioism that this book evoked: especially the Brumbies and Tԋҽ Mαɳ Fɾσɱ Sɳσɯყ Rιʋҽɾ references!
Jason Weaver just wants to be left alone. It was a tough transition from his army days to civilian life, and he's looking forward to settling into a solitary life.

A huge thank you to Allen and Unwin for sending me a review copy.
This was exactly the book I was needing. After a sea of fantasy it was nice to mix it up with some Aussie rural fiction. As per Karlys style this book had an extremely likeable protagonist living in yhe outback who falls for the semi damaged new bloke in town. Was it predictable at times? Yes. Did I care? No. This was the perfect comfort read. Like a big warm hug from a friend you haven't seen in a while. Loved it.
Solid Karly Lane material that allowed for necessary escapism amidst the chaos. Love the strength of healing in nature and the history of the Brumbies. Who doesn’t love The Man from Snowy River. A few tears with the breast cancer subplot as it mirrored my situation that unfolds at this time of year. I’m going to beat this so I can read Karly Lane novels for years to come!
An interesting book that has two people hurt by tragedy finding each other by accident and striking up a friendship. Tilly only has a sister left in her family and does not have a great relationship with her, she is also trying to bring to life a dream that she shared with her late husband. Jason has his own ghosts to conquer. Recommended.
I was caught up in the story of Tilly & Jason from the beginning. How they each battled their past traumas and with the help of working with horses and following their dreams they were able to move on and live a life of enjoyment. It was also informative on the how a group of volunteers helped form the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Association and save the Wild Brumbies from extinction.
Omg Karly this is one of the best books I have read. Couldn't put it down from cover to cover. The storyline between Jason and Tilly kept you guessing and then you throw in sister Jess. Loved this story and how she eventually got her house business up and running. Ive love love. She is one of my favourite authors and her books are amazing. Good job again. ❤️📚
I really liked this book. Another brilliant and easy read from Karly Lane. I love how you can finish her novels and jump online to research real companies and places she mentions in her fiction that help to promote rural aussie communities and groups.
Although the characters and the story were okay, I didn't really feel much listening to this book. I think part of the reason for this was that the main male character was too dour for me.
