4.5 Something Special Stars

I've enjoyed every book I've read by this author, and this is no exception.

This book exudes romance: simple, unadulterated romance. It was such a light and fun read, and it left me with a huge smile on my face.

Shy, slightly geeky Noah doesn't thinks he's anything special, just an ordinary 23-year-old college graduate still living with his parents and working at a bookstore. He's crushing hard on the handsome guy he sees on the tube almost daily: olive-skinned, athletic Sol is beautiful and charming, and Noah doesn't think he stands a chance.

Noah's insecurities almost get the best of him. He doesn't think Sol can want him as much as he wants Sol, and since we are privy to only Noah's POV, we can merely speculate regarding Sol's feelings, but it's obvious (to everyone but Noah, that is!) that Sol is crazy about Noah.

Northcote has an effortless writing style that's easy to get lost in. I read this book without pausing, and I loved every second of it. There's some very mild angst (a lack of communication, really) at the end, but for the most part this is a true FEEL-GOOD book: no major angst, addiction, homophobia, scary villains, stalker ex-boyfriends, or aliens in sight.

I adored the British setting and humour, as well as the secondary characters, particularly Sol's chill and hilarious roommates and Noah's parents, but Sol's mom and little sister were also pretty great.

If you're looking for a sweet, low-key read that will envelope you like a warm blanket, look no further.

There is plenty of steam and feels here, too, and the ending is pure awesomeness. It made me want to sparkle and dance!

This was LOVELY; definitely recommended!

this was such a cute, simple, drama-free story, and it was exactly what i was in the mood for this week.

Jay Northcote has really mastered the art of these no-frills comfort reads, i think. honestly, there was barely a plot outside of the romance in this book, but the characters were so soft and sweet i didn’t even mind.

3.75 stars rounded up.

Another "oldie" by Jay Northcote, Nothing Special is a cute story about two guys who meet because of their daily commute.

Noah can't stop thinking about the handsome stranger in the London Zoo shirt that he sees almost everyday on the train home. He doesn't plan on doing anything more than daydream about him until a friend suggests a crazy way to approach him.

Once they arrange a date, Noah can't believe his risky move actually worked and Sol aggreed to go out with him. What starts as a date, soon becomes a long weekend spent together and a real relationship isn't too far away.

We only get Noah's POV here but I didn't miss Sol's thoughts. He was a pretty open guy and it was clear he liked Noah, pure and simple.

The secondary characters were a nice addition and made the story more real. Sol's sister was adorable with her passion about animals and both their mothers and Noah's dad were very supportive. It's clear that this was written with the inteniton of being a feel-good story and it managed to hit the mark.

There's a bit of drama close to the end, but thankfully it was nothing over the top and it did serve the purpose of making Noah see how serious Sol was about them and overcome his insecurities, so it didn't bother me.

If you're a fan of this author, don't miss the chance to read one of his older books.

*An ARC of this book was kindly provided to me in exchange for an honest review. *

One more "Nothing" book. Such a sweet story. Sol sees something very special in Noah and he just has to find a way to show Noah just how special and beautiful he really is. And Noah is so very unsure as he thinks he's nothing special.

I liked how the relationship built between Sol and Noah and how they both had to overcome insecurities to be together. The chemistry and the tenderness were amazing.

I read it in one sitting and found that I had a sappy grin on my face most of the time. The ending was just absolute perfection.

A very special one... Loved. Loved. Loved.

If you want a break from something long and complicated then check this out. This was a simple tale - sweet and fun.

Geeky Noah thinks he couldn't possibly keep Sol's interest.
Sol is so genuine, how could Noah doubt him?

I admit not much happens, but the angst is minimal, the smex is lovely, and of course there's a happy ending!

I suppose if I had to describe this book, I'd say it was cute. And fun. Not the best I've read this month, but still pretty good.

Shy, thin, bespectacled Noah describes himself as ordinary. But why wouldn't he when he's only ever dated selfish, closet case losers?
“My ex—if he even warrants being called an ex—was the same. We only ever met to hook up. He wouldn’t even go out for a drink with me. I was just a….” His voice trailed off as he remembered Jon’s words to him. You’re just a hole to fuck. Noah could still hear the mocking laughter. “I didn’t matter to him,” he finished.

Sorry, but my proud gay ass would have ripped that dillhole a new one right there on the spot. *JunkPunch* "I'm motherf*ckin' out!"

Noah then sees stunningly gorgeous Sol on his train home from work for months, but he's too twitterpated to even consider speaking to the GQ-looking London Zoo guy.

But fate and a good friend are on Noah's side and he's convinced to place a "missed connections" ad in the newspaper that Sol continuously reads on the train, which leads to a first date.

The first date leads to a completely *spanktacular*, unforgettable, hot night for them both, which then leads to the entire weekend spent together. Then longer. And longer.
"Didn’t I tell you? I’m attempting to break the world record for longest first date ever.” ~ Sol
And, seriously, they were all lesbian U-Haul'ing it faster than you can say reach around.

They were obviously very compatible and into one another, and they weren't out clubbing baby seals or anything, so more power to them on their lesbionic adventures.

But as Noah's "he's a bottomy steak and I'm toppy Spam sandwich" inner monologue kicks in, their HEA eTrain straight to wedding bells (in 6 weeks flat -- or less) gets temporarily derailed.

"Is this *too* perfect? Is it too soon? We should take a break while I think (too much) about it..." ARGH!

Fortunately, a few days later, Sol tracks chicken shit Noah down and forces him to talk and the ILY's flow freely, Toppy turns Bottomy for a hot minute (*love* the flip-flop action) and we get our HEA.
“You’re a horrible tease,” Noah grumbled.
“I’m a wonderful tease. Now shut up and roll over.”
Noah rolled.

Then as the book ends, Sol titillates Noah's nuptials. (Sounds dirtier than it was.) : )

So all in all, it was good, but waaaaaaay low drama, literally all of which was self-imposed.

3 1/2 stars this time.

There are certain authors that fit a category of comfort read for me. Those authors create characters that I know I am going to fall in love with as they fall in love with each other. One of those authors for me, is Jay Northcote and her latest release of Nothing Special, is another book to add to my must read list.

Now, the title may lead you to believe that this is a sequel to Nothing Serious and while I would love a revisit Mark and Jamie, this is a whole new story, in a whole new town with a whole new couple. Does that mean it’s any less of a story, um… Sol is based on Levi Karter so let that marinade in your knickers for a bit. You done? Good. Let’s move on.

Nothing Special was a delightful tale of Noah, our shy boy who has a mad crush on the hot lad who rides the train and wears a uniform from the London Zoo. Noah fancies the boy but doesn’t have the nerve to talk to him. Yeah, I feel ya Noah, I have been there more than once and I too had a crush on a boy named Sol. I loved the taste of my foot that winter as we worked together and every time I talked about how hot he was, he would end up standing behind me. Not as close as on a crowded train mind you, but the time he was worried about not wearing a tie at work and I told him he looked hot either way? Yeah, I get ya boy.

So Noah has a crush and on the insistence of his best friend, Dom, he puts an ad in the social section of the paper to get Sol’s attention? Does it work? You bet your ass it does and that ad leads to the longest, the sweetest, and the sexiest first date ever. I love how the author has the ability to take the most awkward meet cutes and turn them into a wonderful love story. Life is neither choreographed, nor scripted and we can make some odd choices but that is what makes life amazing and each day a promise of something new. Northcote delivers that with her boys; they are characters you can relate to and want to know.

Gah. These two were so into each other and I was so into them. I adored the way Sol showed affection for Noah and how he proved to Noah he was more than “Nothing Special.” I have always said the best treat for a couple would to be to see how your partner sees you, through their eyes. Noah, what you get from Sol just blows me away, you lucky man.

Nothing Special, that title is misleading because these boys were so much more than special. I loved watching them fall for one another so honestly and that end? I have it marked in my notes that I screamed, because I did! It turned me into goo and was the best ending. Just swoony and romantic and sigh. Special.

Uhm, I keep wondering if the title becomes a 'curse' ... because for me, this is just, well, nice but nothing special (cringe!).

I admit that the idea of Noah placing an ad to capture Sol's attention was cute and the ending was too. The middle was just okay ... they dated, they spent the weekend, they went to the zoo, they had good sex ... nothing special (cringe!) really happened, sadly. I think the only issue was when Noah was freaking out when Sol asked him to move in. But it was resolved quickly.

This is like watching a very calm lake, no ripples. Again, it's nice but I guess I also want some "oomph" in my story.

En la línea del autor, no ha sacudido mi mundo pero es una historia dulce, agradable. Un MC no se siente lo suficientemente "bueno" para el otro, ver cómo se da cuenta de que eso no es verdad siempre es bonito.
Un buen rato.

A nice, sweet fluffy story about two men falling in love. It was a light read with the only real issue being Noah's insecurity and belief that he is nothing special. Even Sol's very obvious delight in being with him isn't enough to turn off the voices, both current and past, that tell him he won't be able to keep the beautiful man. Although Noah's insecurity did start to annoy me, it was a romantic, feel good story.

This book's title should be "Absolutely Special"! This story is sweet, adorable and hot! I love Jay Northcote style! This is not the first book that I've read from this author, and I can say that this is one of my favorite!

The story is simple and yet so perfect! Noah and Sol are the perfect match. Noah feels that he is beneath Sol, that Sol will get bored of him, and his insecurities almost lead to the end of their fabulous relationship! Luckily, Sol is sunshine and lightens Noah's life completely!

(For me this was a very interesting reading, because I am Portuguese, and in Portuguese Sol means Sun! I actually think that Sol brightened Noah's life :))

A cute story of a new relationship between two different, but lovely guys. The blurb gives an impression of one of them being insecure and he is, but not as much as I expected. Noah doesn't go overboard with it.
The thing is, it's a well written nice story, but nothing really happens. The only exciting moment is when Noah does the thing to get Sol's attention. I recommend it when you are sad or not up to reading anything heavy.

There are many reasons that I’m a repeat customer when it comes to Northcote but this feel-good story is a prime example of why I adore his stories so much. Despite the title, I think this story is quite special. Smooth writing allows us to quickly engage in Noah’s predicament. It’s quite simple really. Noah has a train crush but he’s certain it will always remain a faraway flame. Why? The handsome stranger is way out of his league. But wait? Who defines the standards for leagues? Handsome train guy, aka Sol, doesn’t agree with the boxes that Noah has constructed. He believes Noah is perfect for him. But can he get Noah to see things from his perspective? Or will Noah allow invisible barriers to keep him from his heart’s greatest desires? I suggest you find out with this sweet, sexy and satisfying story.

What's to like: As always, Jay delivers uncut goodness. *snicker* Seriously, we get the whole nine yards here….likable characters in a relatable situation, packed with loads of sweet and sexy. I’m sure each and every one of us has been in a spot where confidence needed some boosting. Where self-doubt and society’s unrealistic expectations hang heavy on our shoulders. What Jay brings to light here is while the exterior package may be what initially sparks interest, many things play a part in attraction. Personality and character hold more weight than smooth skin and taut muscles. And when the lights go out, connection and affection are far more important. It takes a bit of facing the mirror but Noah understands that it’s not really “leagues” rather than taste, and luckily for him, Sol can’t get enough of his flavor.

What's to love: It was easy to fall for both Noah and Sol. I adored Dom’s suggestion to catch Sol’s attention. It’s tried and true meet-cute but worked like a charm. So they meet. And they click. And it was toe-curling good. Then Noah trips over his own misgivings. He doesn’t think he’s good enough for Sol. He’s afraid of rejection, although Sol hasn’t given him any reason for it. The reluctance is short-lived. I enjoyed their swift fall. I smiled nearly the entire time. My heart was full and light. Then the ending sealed the deal. It was absolute perfection!

Beware of: Insecurity rears its ugly head. Fluffy feel good with slim to zero angst. A quick fall that will leave you either smitten or sulky. Me? I was keen on their…zesty passion. And a lovely take of ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ with British flare.

This book is for: If you are searching for cute and charming, Noah and Sol have it in spades. I would gather that you will agree with me…they are positively special.

THAT ENDING THOUGH. MY BODY IS FULL OF BUTTERFLIES AND RAINBOWS AND SUNSHINE.

That was the fucking cutest.

Some wee annoying things like But honestly this was too adorable for me to care much about those things.

Also bonus that this was actually authentically British and not cringey as fuck like a lot of books with British characters are for me.

Usually I don’t read Young Adult novels, so Jay Northcote wasn’t on my reading list until now. That changed with Nothing Special, though. The main characters are a few years older and Noah and Sol are just adorable together.

I absolutely loved this fluffy story and Noah and Sol have joined my list of favourite couples. Their love story was amazingly sweet and not too angsty. Recommended if you want a light and easy read.

Hmm...

The writing is...good, but there is so much stop and go between scenes that it's almost as if the author is asking you to take multiple breaks from the story. A single chapter can have anywhere from 2-7, with an average of approximately 5 scene changes per chapter. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes I felt there were breaks that easily could have had a simple transitioning paragraph instead, or some short scenes only a few paragraphs long that could have been excluded entirely without taking anything away from the story. And that...leads to the other issue I have.

I already knew prior to reading this story that "nothing special" would really happen throughout, but I don't think I was quite prepared for how little this story would make me feel. It's an extremely easy read with very little excitement of any kind. I didn't even feel very interested in the sex, which is a bit of a letdown. At first I felt connected to Noah (he likes books, cats, and is a bit shy in the beginning, all of which can describe me) but after a while I just stopped caring. About Noah, about Noah and Sol, about the book.

Some pluses:

-bookshops and cat love (best animal ever!)
-accepting parents is always a good thing
-simple, sweet romance with little complications
-very easy read

It's a perfect read when all you want is something light and full of romance. Unfortunately, it turns out I was in the mood for more action than this provided. I'm no less interested in reading more by this author, however I'm also not more interested and I think it will be a while before I pick something up by Northcote again.

A 23 year old boy, Noah is living with his parents while working in a bookstore. Noah has been crushing on this gorgeous guy he sees almost every day in the subway. He is shy and he thinks this guy is out of his league. He thinks he’s nothing special.

Noah’s friend Dom is determined to help his friend so he suggests to place an ad in the paper.. The gorgeous guy, Sol, is interested too so they start dating. Even so, Noah is still insecure..

A light read, with no angst or major drama, Nothing Special was or some reason just in OK read for me. Maybe it was just me or something…

Anyway, my major problem with this one was the fact that nothing really happened. So…I was bored a little. I found the entire story too rushed and I didn’t like that sometimes some things were too detailed. The story is sweet and the characters are cute, but the story didn’t impressed me with anything. I felt like I read the same story before. Unfortunately, nothing was outstanding.

Overall book review: 3.5
Audio book: Matthew Lloyd Davies (Narrator) - 3.5
Book cover 4 Stars

This book took me ages to finish. Why? I don’t really know. I completely lost interest. I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it more if I read it myself? I’m thinking that might have made a difference, yes. It’s not that the narrator was bad, it’s maybe more a thing of personal preference, I’m not really a big fan of the British accent. And maybe that was it?

Also, I really was looking forward to the book in the beginning, because the way they met was just so sweet! But then it went on and on and on with nothing really happening in-between. Or again, maybe I was in a bad mood? I was so thankful for the little drama at the end I I completely perked up.

It was sweet all-and-all and I’m not sorry I read it, but it didn’t make me bounce on my chair.

This was so adorkable.....I floved it!! Noah was sweet and so unsure of himself. The ad in the paper was a stroke of genius! Noah and Sol fall into an easy-going relationship and I like that there was no major drama or angst. Sometimes if you're lucky, it can be that easy. The miscommunication between them could've pushed them into opposite directions, but it was with a huge sigh of relief that they managed to sort that blip out!! Oh! the epilogue gave me the warm and fuzzies and rounded off the story with a contented sigh. I'm still sat here smiling ike a loon - it was "yes"!!!! My only question would now be - did Dom get to give his speech??? Very enjoyable read, highly recommended!

I love Jay's books, she is such a fantastic author who writes very real stories with characters you fall in love with and who you really do care for. It was such a pleasure to read Noah and Sol's story - it was a feel good story that made my heart ache and put a giant goofy smile on my face. And I adore epilogues, which meant I was in heaven with this one ;) If you're looking for something well written, sweet and easy-going, then look no further. Great job, Jay.
