In this exciting series premiere, an eleven-year-old orphan never realized just how special he was until he traveled to a distant world and discovered he possessed an extraordinary ability known as the Guild.
Cooper B. spent his entire childhood moving from one orphanage to another until his peculiar caseworker Ms. Pedigree dropped him off at St. Mary's Academy for the Exceptional Youth. There, he met his two best friends, and together they embarked on grand adventures to help them escape from their reality of being the forgotten ones.
Everything had seemed perfectly normal -- until they meet a quirky, pink haired girl from another world.
That chance meeting would take them on a new adventure, unlike anything they could have ever imagined, and together they would journey to a faraway land in search of Cooper B's true identity. But what they learn will change their lives forever, and Cooper B. will find himself in grave danger -- because the truth was never to be known.
Michael Shane Leighton is the proud Author of the Cooper B. book series. Cooper B. & The Scavenger Hunt is book one in a six book series. Michael was raised in Southern California but has made North Central Illinois home with his beautiful wife Kerry Lynn and their five very energetic children. Michael's passions are reading, laughing, helping others, but most importantly spending quality time with his family.
Finishing this book took a lot longer than it should have because I had to restrain myself and read it together with my 9 year old. If I’d read it solo, I probably would have done it in one sitting. We both LOVED IT! The world, the plot, and the characters- all wonderful! A fabulous journey of self discovery, friendship, and family. We will definitely be adding book 2 to our TBR shelf.
I received a copy of this through Voracious Readers only
I absolutely loved this book. I became so fond of Cooper B. and his friends. I love their interactions and their strong friendship. Their friendship fits the story perfectly. The plot was fantastic, and the experience was amazing. It gave me the feels and it was so extremely touching. The cover of the book is beautiful and the illustrations are too. I adored it so much!! When I saw that this was the 1st of a 6 book series, I was entirely thrilled. Highly recommend!
I just finished this & I absolutely loved it! It says in the back of the book that this is the 1st of a 6 book series, & that makes me soooo happy!! Cooper B & his friends stole my heart! I love the family he has w/Aria & Miles. Then they added Serra to their friend group, & they all fit so perfectly. Miles & Aria helped Cooper just as much as he helped them. They needed each other. I’m so glad they got to experience everything they did on this adventure together. There is so much mystery surrounding Cooper & his identity, & I loved going on the adventure w/them trying to figure it out. The orphanage setting was great. We get introduced to the 3 main friends. Learn a little about them, & see what life has been like for them. Then the next setting is even more amazing than that-it doesn’t say it in the synopsis, so I’m not going to say what/where it is. I absolutely loved that, & cannot wait to see more about this place, world, & people. Such a great story w/a heavy importance of friendship. This gave me all the heartwarming & cozy feels. I absolutely loved it & cannot wait for more! It just came out & I highly recommend! The cover & illustrations above every chapter heading are amazing too!😍 Also, it’s the little things that make me happy lol so the part that books had become obsolete due to technology(summarizing), but they were still available for the people who still preferred actual books...umm 🙋🏻♀️I’ve never been more seen & understood😆😆that’s so me.☺️💜

I was encouraged to read this new book by a friend, and I'm glad I did! I found myself feeling a sense of inclusion in the relationship among friends as they navigated together difficult life circumstances and unbelievable adventures. The worlds in the story come alive as the friends maneuver through each challenge they face. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone. Even better than that, my 13 year old son couldn't put it down and is excited for the next books in the series. Well done!
I loved this book.the central characters are strong and the story has an exciting theme.i look forward to reading the next book..another jk Rowling. On the cards. Great book
I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of Harry Potter. I loved the bond of friendship and fantastical world. I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the next book. A great read for all ages!
If you loved books such as Harry Potter, Scarlet and Ivy, and Seven wonders you’ll love this!
Full of magic and mystery, the story sets off with an introduction to our protagonist Cooper B. Even Cooper B doesn’t know who he is, all we know is that he was left as a young child alone alongside a roadway in Cooper, Maine. That’s how he received his name Cooper, and hence he was a boy and so he was given the full name Cooper B, an orphanage who spent his first 10 years hopping from one foster home to the next, until his social worker, Ms. Pedigree; a peculiar but endearing character, takes him to his newest home - St Mary’s Academy for exceptional youth. Here he meets his two future best friends Aria and Miles, affectionately known as Red.
The trio instantly become best friends until one day they meet a strange young girl - Serra: the girl their age with bright pink hair.
Is she an Alien? Aria is convinced Ms Pedigree must be one!!!
But what is an Alien? They are little green men with big eyes right? I suppose you could say Serra is an “Alien” she isn’t from this world, but from a different world, where she lives in a place called “Alyssum.”
Cooper B and his friends follow Serra through “the fold” into her world. A world it seems Cooper B was born in. The four friends start year two of their new school “Greyson Academy” - after all they are orphans, no one is going to care where they are, especially now they know Ms Pedigree is also a “Alien” from Alyssum.
The children settle well in their new school until strange things start happening - and it is down to Cooper B and his three best friends to solve the mystery surrounding the school … and… Cooper’s parents.
The story instantly had me hooked with an intriguing and quick introduction to the characters and the new world of Alyssum, with a welcoming sense of magic from Chapter one.
The protagonist is extremely likeable, and very humble, his friends each have complimenting but different characteristics and personalities that will have you thinking of characters from books such as Harry Potter. The language is appropriate for, who I assume the target age is; 9-14 year olds, yet it can easily be enjoyed by all ages. I’m 27 and absolutely loved the book.
I can’t wait for the next book! Very excited to see what happens next at Greyson Academy with Cooper B, his friends and his quest to find the truth!

I was given “Cooper B. And The Scavenger Hunt” by Michael Shane Leighton by Cooper B.Publishing for my honest review. This will be part of a series of 6 books including this one.
This book is for YA’s that will have them enraptured in a mysterious adventure filled with friendship, family, hope, magic and all things other worldly. I was kept enthralled via the authors ability to create a world that was consistently filled with mystery.
We first encounter Cooper B. Is an 11 year old boy being moved from one orphanage to another and although Mrs. Pedigree helps him to find better places this is not Cooper’s destiny. Poor Cooper ends up at St. Mary’s School for Exceptional Youth which is anything but exceptional and deals with a horrific bully named Theodore. However he meets Aria and Miles who will end up being something more as time goes on.
As time goes on the 3 orphans become close friends and Aria questions why Mrs. Pedigree singles them out as special children. This will become even more apparent when they meet Serra and all 4 children end up in Alyssum. This is where the mystery and adventure begins.
Who is Serra and where is Alyssum and Grayson Academy? You will encounter so much that teach Cooper things about his past and lead him through danger and bonds that prove that friends can be just as important as family.
I really could not wait to see what would happen till the very end and now I will be waiting for Mr. Leighton’s next book in this series. I give this book a 5/5 and highly recommend this book series for YA readers.
Cooper B. and the Scavenger Hunt was a great light read. It reminded me a little of the Harry Potter books, the early ones at least.
The story is about a young orphan and his two orphan friends who are brought together in a rather unsavoury orphanage, where during one of their imaginary adventures they meet a very unusual girl with pink hair and from that moment their real adventure begins.
This fabulous book was written by Michael Shane Leighton, and his writing style brought to life a world filled with bright colours and textures I felt I could reach out and touch. He introduces some interesting creatures, that are very cute but deadly, and who would have thought that dragoons were real. This book is a fantasy fiction story that I would suggest would be suited to tweens and younger teen readers, even though I thoroughly enjoyed it, reading it in a day. The authors writing style flowed easily.
The main character Cooper B. grows as the story progresses, ending in him discovering he has some pretty amazing abilities when pushed into a corner. He has many questions, about who he is and where he has come from, he wants to find the answers, and as the adults in his life are not eager to give him the answers, he is determined to find the answers he seeks, with the help of his friends. This is a great start to what could be a wonderful series of books, I hope Michael Leighton can work his characters and have them reach their potential.
I was generously gifted a copy of this book by the author Michael Shane Leighton via Voracious Readers Only.
Cooper B. and the scavenger Hunt is a wonderful story of a young orphan boy and an adventure he stumbles upon. The book begins when Cooper B. is found as an orphaned baby and is put into different foster homes. He finally makes friends in an orphanage where all the children are brought by the same mysterious woman. Cooper and his friends stumble upon a little girl in their yard and realize only Cooper can understand her until his friends put on bracelets. But why can Cooper understand her at all? All three friends believe she is an alien but when she takes them to her world, they discover so much more. In this new world is where Cooper B. begins to embark on a fun filled adventure. An adventure that leads to him to find out who he is and who the mysterious women is that found him and his friends. A wonder filled adventure, each page has something new and exciting on it for everyone to enjoy. Who is Cooper B and why is he so important? What is this new world and why are the people there not exactly aliens? Cooper B and the scavenger hunt has many questions in it that keep the reader interested and wanting more. I wonder what adventures Cooper B and his friends will go on next.
I don't typically reach for middle grade stories that often anymore, but I was thoroughly impressed by this story! It was fun, easy to follow, and I can't wait to read the rest of this 6 story series.
This book definitely had that Harry Potter feel in the sense of the close knit of friends who came from nothing and stumbled into a magical world, but this time it was a sci-fi edition. The author did a wonderful job at keeping you on your toes and painting a vivid picture of the world they were in. The world was filled with mystery, adventure and interesting characters, making it a series I think many young adults will gravitate towards.
Overall, I highly recommend this to young an old as it was a positively fun adventure from beginning to end! The heartwarming friendships, mystery and adventure is something to make you want to come back for more.
Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC from the author for review purposes. I'd like to thank Michael Leighton for providing me this opportunity!
3 orphans, brought together over time find themselves on an adventure in another world.
I received this book through Voracious Readers and it sounded like a fun read.
Cooper B, found abandoned in Cooper, Maine at the age of one, has always been an orphan and has accepted that foster families always tire of him and he always ends up back in the system. At St. Mary’s Academy for Exceptional Youth, Cooper soon makes friends with Aria and Miles. One day they come across a strange girl, with bright pink hair, named Serra and decide to follow her. They find themselves in a new world, one that is similar but also quite different from their own. Attending Grayson Academy, they learn about the new world that is becoming their home, make new friends, learn magic and attempt to discover what happened to Cooper’s missing parents.
This was a wonderful story, part 1 of 6, it was a good read with great character’s that have a fun dynamic as they interact with each other. I enjoyed this book.
I received a copy of this book from VRO and this is my voluntary honest review. One thrilling heart warming adventure with a fantastic plot and strong likable characters. So well written! A pleasant, good, quick read, fun and lighthearted read! I love this cover! It is so inviting! It really draws you in so you don't want to miss out on the story! Wow! Don't miss this amazing adventure! Read and enjoy!
I really enjoyed that book. It reminded me of Harry Potter a lot! The characters are so loveable and I really connected with each of them. Such an easy read, I couldn't put it down. When will book 2 be available? I can't wait to find out what Grayson's Academy has in store for Cooper B and his friends *Thanks Voracious readers only for the opportunity to read and review this awesome book.
A wonderful way to start a new series. Cooper B. is left alone, so alone he is named after the city he was found in. He was moved from home to home until he landed at St. Mary's Academy for Exceptional Youth where he is soon joined by fellow orphans Aria and Miles. The three friends create their own adventures as distractions from the world, but after crossing paths with a mysterious girl in the woods, their lives are forever changed and the real adventure begins. This book was a delightful read, and while it's labeled as middle-grade, it is worded and structured in such a way that an elementary student might find it exactly what they are looking for. The level of adventure was perfect - think first-year Harry Potter, a few levels removed. Just enough tension and thrill to keep the book moving, but not enough to create nightmares. Would highly recommend this be put on your child's, or even your own, TBR shelf. I can't wait to see what happens next!
I absolutely loved this book. It had a great story line and you really got to love the characters. I'm glad that Miles, Aria, Cooper and Serra all had the chance of meeting and becoming a family. It's really heart-warming. I was really happy for one mystery to be solved about Coopers past, but there are still so many things that will undoubtedly unfold in the books to come, which I cannot wait to read!
I absolutely love this book! I've only read this first one but I couldn't put it down and once I finished it I don't think I can wait to read what happens next! The way the characters interact with each other really makes me love that my friends are always there for me. If you're looking for an adventure this is the one! I got my complimentary copy from Voracious Readers Only
This book was absolutely amazing even my little sister loved it (but who could not) I got to say I probably wouldn’t of picked this if I didn’t receive a free copy but I’m glad I did !
A fun book that I definately want to read to my 9 year old. I think she will love it. The comradiery between Cooper, Aria, Miles and Serra is sweet and caring. I love the adventure they go on and I can't wait to read the next in the series. To go from being unwanted orphans to three very important 'aliens' is such a great start to this story.
The atmosphere was the best part of this book but the characters didn’t connect to me very much and I do recognise this is the first in a six part series. A good quick read which is fun and lighthearted which may excite your Harry Potter hearts.
I do not support J K Rowling in anyway, I don’t think she is right.
Disclaimer: I received a copy in a giveaway for review.
I was very excited to pick this one up because I love a good middle grade mystery. A scavenger hunt thrown in is a bonus!
There were quite a few elements that I liked. The worldbuilding was pretty fun. It's a mix of sci-fi and fantasy and has some whimsy. The characters were interesting and engaging. The friendship dynamics were heartwarming at times and humorous at others. Found family is one of my favorite tropes. The mystery in this book is layered. There's the main mystery and then there's the scavenger hunt. I really liked the scavenger hunt element. I wish that part had been longer.
Given that "scavenger hunt" is in the title of the book, I expected the scavenger hunt to have been featured more but it didn't occur until about 2/3 of the way through the book. The first 2/3 was a lot of setup - getting to know the characters, the world. Which was fine but not what I was expecting. The writing style at the beginning of the book was great but then things started getting a bit confusing. The way characters or character actions / reactions were described was sometimes inconsistent. I also would have liked to see a bit more depth for some of the characters (e.g., Theo, Bolliver). I could see influences from some other well-known middle grade fantasies but there were enough unique characteristics to separate this world a little bit from the others.
Overall, it was a fun read, though not quite what I was expecting. This was an ambitious story covering a lot of ground and I think the series has potential. Oh and I LOVE the cover art.
When I first picked this book up I was really excited to read about the magical boarding school. I enjoyed reading about our main character, Cooper B. and his friends and found the setting to be interesting. Unfortunately I found many aspects of the story to be very similar to a very popular magical school series. I saw these similarities in characters and plot points and it took away from my general enjoyment of the story. That said, it did have some unique features that I had fun reading about, like the scavenger hunt! I had enjoyed figuring out the clues with the characters and wish that it was a more prominent part of the book. I also would have liked to learn more about the rules of the magic system and the world in general, which I think will be explored in future books.
Overall it was a cute story, but unfortunately it just wasn't for me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. This book will almost certainly appeal to fans of Harry Potter and similar fantasy novels in the middle grade/young adult age group. I found the storyline interesting - some aspects were very similar to Harry Potter, but not to the point that the author had copied the ideas. The characters were relatable and likeable, and the dialogue was mostly well written. The storyline became a little convoluted and hard to follow in places, and I did find some aspects of the writing a little "clunky" and awkward. In some places particular words were used out of context, and I felt like the author may have had trouble finding the correct word. I think the book could be polished with the help of a good Editor.
I’m so surprised by how much I loved this one. I loved the school setting, magic and the mystery. Cooper and his friends were interesting characters and this book was such a quick read.
