Based on the TV series WAGON TRAIN, which initially starred veteran movie supporting actor Ward Bond as the wagon master and Robert Horton as the scout. An American Western series that ran on NBC 1957-62 and then on ABC 1962-65, the show chronicles the adventures of a wagon train as it makes its way from Missouri to California. Danny Green is a young man hired to drive a wagon for Colonel Cluggage because he knows how to set type and work a printing press loaded on the wagon. When Major Seth Adams' wagon train comes on a stranded man, his mules shot, arrows sticking out all over the wagon, it sets off a chain that may get them all killed.
They are in the middle of Ute country and the Major had already promised they would pass straight through. But when it's revealed the man has discovered a diamond mine where the Major says none could be, most of the folks on the train want to invest in the man's new mining company.
The Major satisfies himself there are diamonds and it certainly is handy that the Colonel's wagon holds a printing press and paper. Share certificates are quickly set up and printed by Danny at his boss's instruction. Of course to keep everything above board, the Major will hold all the money in the train strong box.
It takes Danny's pet crow Caleb, who has a propensity for stealing shiny objects, to start unraveling the mystery.
I’ve been collecting these Whitman books, and I recently found this one at an antique shop. I read through this one. This book is based on the television series of the same name as indicated on the cover. It was a decent story with a nice little twist that was fairly easy to figure out. This was YA fiction before YA was a thing.
