The Highway of Blood: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario for the 1970s

Rate this book
The Highway of Blood is a scenario for Call of Cthulhu 7th Edition. It is set in 1975 and pays homage to the grindhouse movies of the time. For that reason, it is extremely deadly and gritty and is intended for MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY.

This is an extremely sandboxy scenario, and so the number of sessions will vary greatly depending on the players. This will work with almost any sort of characters from the time period from regular folks to law enforcement to mythos investigators. The replay value of the scenario is therefore very high, with a very different story and outcome each time.

The scenario includes multiple plot ideas, pre-generated characters, numerous handouts, cinematic car chase rules, as well as rules for dealing with the extreme desert environment that the characters find themselves in.

70a grind house horror meets elements of Call of Cthulhu. What more could you want?

The Highway of Blood: A Call of Cthulhu Scenario for the 1970s is an exhaustive scenario setting for a campaign where the players are ok with something a little different from typically Lovecraftian horror…

This campaign setting presents a small town in west Texas during the 1970s with plenty of secrets. Some fun details are provided regarding its 19th and early 20th century history, but it’s unlikely a group passing through will be aware of it.

It’s more likely they are just passing through when they have to stop at the only gas station to fuel up…or maybe their car breaks down…or maybe they have some unfortunate reason to actually visit.

The book provides a number of scenarios to explain why the players would be visiting or passing through along with pregenerated characters, though obviously it remains up to the Keeper and his players to settle on a suitable setup.

Other than an overarching plot line involving some rowdy locals (only a slight hint of the horror ahead), it’s fairly open world with maps of the town and various abandoned areas that certain troublesome players might find themselves visiting. Relevent locations also have notes on various locals and their affiliations or motivations (also how long they’ve been in town) giving ample opportunity for role play.

To round out the setting, notes on 70s vehicles, equipment, and even music for a background soundtrack are provided for inspiration.

For a lengthy mini-campaign, it’s a unique setting that you don’t see very often with calmly Cthulhu….which is part of why I am so impressed my it. More CoC writers should experiment with this kind of outside the box setting…especially as it’s inspired by horror movies and stories that already have tons of Lovecraftian vibes…
