Johnny Silver #3

One Bullet Too Many

Rate this book
JOHNNY SILVER FACES HIS MOST EVIL OPPONENT YET IN THIS PULSATING THRILLER. HE’S AN EX-MERCENARY WHO WANTS TO SEE JUSTICE DONE. WHATEVER IT TAKES . . . AND THAT USUALLY INVOLVES BREAKING A FEW THINGS.

Life in the Polish resort of Lake Cezar is idyllic, that is, until local crime lord, Emil Provda, not satisfied with prostitution, drug-smuggling and gun-running, starts a protection racket among the resort's businesses.

But this time Provda has picked the wrong battle. Local hotel owner, Stanislav, is one of a group of five ex-mercenaries. The old gang - Stanislav, Johnny Silver, Bull, Red and Pieter - must get together for this final fight.

Putting their lives on the line, they decide to close Provda down if it's the last thing they do. The gang's crusade against Provda brings them up against their toughest opponents yet and the odds against them rise with each battle, until the final duel on a deserted island. Just when they think it's over, there's one more bullet to come; but who is on the receiving end?

Weak plot

A complete load of nonsense. Why I finished the book is beyond me. The author is taking the art of story telling to the extremes of fantasy.

Not a bad book. Not a terrible book. A leading contender for Worst. Book. Ever!
We meet a band of five mercenaries trying to get a family of white farmers out of Zimbabwe. These unfortunates have been forced off their farm. Just for being white! Please note that this review is not in any way a pean for Magabe, but ... did the antecedents of the family actually pay anyone to take over the property? Have they been paying award wages for the century or so that they have 'owned' it? We skip over awkward detail. And many more subsequent ones.
There is a gunfight near the border. The mercenaries effortlessly kill their attackers, but suffer extreme pangs of conscience for having done so.
Next, we are in Africa for the marriage of the the leader, Johnnie, to a gorgeous woman. He wonders what he has done to deserve her. So did I.
The reception is somewhat spoiled by one of the mercenaries arriving in a recently beaten up state. This one is the one of the group who is cerebral, as in, can add, divide and is able to use cutlery. It transpires two people who are bigger than he is want protection money to safeguard the welfare of the business that he has bought with his proceeds from the Zim job. Consider me naive, but if one member of a mercenary gang is physically assaulted, are the other members not duty bound to make mayhem with the perpetrators? If not, what is the point of being a mercenary?
Ah, well.
It goes downhill from here. Or perhaps it just keeps plumbing the bottom. One of the mercenaries, Bull, of Native American heritage, always refers to himself in the third person, and calls himself Apache Warrior. One stereotype to go, please.
The unwild bunch wind up in Poland, but I didn't care enough to be bothered to find out what they did there. They did seem to come back with the love and respect of all the people that they met. Except for the Really Bad Guys, who had all been dispatched.
If you like books with invincible protagonists, bad Baddies, and not many things happening, this book could well be for you.
One review posted below praises the "Great characters, good banter between them, and above all, honour and brotherhood". Perhaps there are two editions.

Great read

Another one from Paul Bennett that hooks you from page 1 to the end. Great characters that you can relate and visualise. Story can be brutal at times, but not for the sake of it. Scene settings take you into the whole scenario. Every book in this four book set gets better. Shame only one book left.

This is one of the worst books i've ever read. It was so bad i couldn't finish it because it was pure fantasy and badly written. There is no way they would ever have befriended their enemy's son because it makes no sense at all. Also anyone that's been around weapons knows that they fire rounds and not bullets.

Would i reccomend this book? Reckon Not!

Alas. The last page read. More Please

My review title says it all. A very book, but hopefully it is not the last we will see of Johnny Silver” and his brother’s in arms, and dark humor.

I highly recommend this book. Thank you Paul Bennett.

Entertaining

Funny, fairly fast moving, entertaining and a good light read in my opinion.
A little childish in places and I was never sure of the validity in the reasoning to look after the boy, but heyho, I did enjoy it.

Excellent read, these mercenary/vigilantes certainly keep busy

Another great thriller in the Johnny Silver series. A group of individuals that form an amazing team. Great characters, good banter between them, and above all, honour and brotherhood

Another fun read and should not be taken seriously. Silver and the team go to to Poland this time to help Stan. The problem being a protection racket run by a local gangster. Crazy odds against the five of them, but an action packed ride to get to the conclusion.

Poor spelling and grammar. Yet another lazy writer assuming the Glock pistol has a “Safety switch” (the safety is actually built into the trigger)

Good read.

A good read that has Silver and his crew/mares reaching out to help one of their friends who has a hotel escape the clutches of criminals demanding protection money.
