Reapers of Crescent City #1

Magical Midlife Reaping

Rate this book
Death’s come calling for handsome playboy and supernatural mischief maker Axel Lacroix but -- all hell breaks loose when Reaper Arla Alcaraz attempts to deliver his sentence.

Rules, duty and paperwork have filled most of Arla’s forty-two years on earth.
Doling out death and keeping the peace in New Orleans isn’t always easy considering its teeming with supernatural creatures and enchantments. Oh, and let’s not forget her one lackluster, on-again, off-again relationship of convenience. Her life has certainly been less than magical.

Axel Lacroix is a lot of things -- none of them approved by the Office of Magical Affairs, but -- he could care less.
He’s easy on the eyes, irresistible, and loves causing a little ruckus now and then. When his meddling goes a step too far though, it’s time for an intervention. Heading off to deliver Axel’s final sentence, Arla couldn’t be happier to rid New Orleans of the constant troubles he’s caused for good. Her plan seemed foolproof enough, but little does she know how this execution’s going to turn her world upside down…

Will Arla prevent a supernatural war from erupting and keep a broken heart at bay, or will their undeniable attraction spell disaster for them?

DNF at 36% when it was clear that Arla and Axel were going to end up in a smut scene.

I was absolutely not a fan of the plot device that brainwashed the MC Axel into lusting after the FMC Reaper Arla, and Arla taking advantage of said spell to have intimate relations with him even though it was made clear that she wasn't the usual type of woman that he was attracted to or went after. While Axel was portrayed as a disruptive selfish human instead of a righteous supernatural like Arla, I don't think it was appropriate to use magic to take away his consent in that manner. Using this to build romantic interest between them for a third of the book was incredibly off-putting to me, and having to read details about how much Arla was enjoying Axel's spelled lust when the clothes were coming off and trying to spin it as "I'm so lucky" was way too much for me. I had to stop reading at that point.

Arla is a witch in charge of the Reaping duties for the Alcaraz family and she is good at it. She has one man that has been a problem for the paranormal community for a long time. She hated him and what he represented and she had no idea really what drove him she and her younger sister Zona decided that it was time for him to die and that she would do it with a potion to get the information they needed as to the mirror and then she could do him end. Alex Lacroix is a man who has never forgotten the horrible death that Grandma Tabby suffered in the old cabin in the swamp when he was a kid and he had seen all the spirits around her bed. He made a point of starting the Haunted Cresent City Tour service that seems to give him some satisfaction that drives the Reaper crazy. Unfortunately for Arla, she loses her job because 0f Alex but she really can't blame him she enjoyed his company. I was given a copy as a gift from Bookfunnel without obligations. I am providing an honest review.

Arla Alcuraza is a witch and her reaper duties are that she keeps the peace in New Orleans within the paranormal community, but her boring life finally gets a lift by none other than Axel Lacroix who has been becoming a problem with the Order of magical affairs on several occasions by running his ghost tours and ripping people off and is now after the magical mirror and finds it with the help of a ghost pirate that now could start a war between to paranormal worlds and its Arla’s job to find out what he knows by any means that includes seducing him but she never been the pretty one ever it’s always been her sister but she must pull it together this time or die trying. Can Arla really kill him to stop the war when the chemistry between them is so strong. This was not a bad read in general but I did get a little lost in the beginning with the Cajun terminology and folklore of New Orleans because I don’t know enough about it but other than that I enjoyed it.

I voluntarily read an arc copy of this book for an honest review.

Arla Alcaraz has a big problem and his name is Axel Lacroix. Ever since the man started his "ghost tour" she had been getting letters from the Order of Magickal Affairs about his shenanigans. Her job as Reaper, the harvester of misbehaving souls, in New Orleans was not made easier by the stunts he pulled. Now he has apparently managed to get his hands on a magical mirror that could start a supernatural war between werewolves and vampires. The only way she knows to try to get information from him is to seduce him and she is not the seducing kind. Her sister on the other hand would have no problem since she got all the looks in the family. There was no way she was going to admit defeat without even trying so she casts a spell that will only last 13 hours. For that length of time she will be irresistible to Axel. As you might guess, things will not go at all the way she planned...

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Not at all what I was anticipating, but much, much better!

This book had so many things going for it. First, the main characters were in their 40's and still going strong. They both had a kinda hollow life and were missing a connection with someone else. Arla felt she was never pretty enough, never bubbly enough or never interesting enough for anyone else to take their time with her. Axel was lonely inside but used his extremely good looks to keep his bed warm and his silver tongue to talk his way out of almost anything. But when these two meet the magic happens, literally and figuratively. Add in the fact that things go from bad to worse for Arla before they get better and I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to see what happens next in Crescent City with our Reapers! I requested a free advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.

A Short Witchy Tell OVER 18 READING

A New Orleans tell with witches, vampires, fairies, other supernaturals, and of course humans. You have a man who hates all things supernatural or magical so much he has made a business of causing them as much trouble as he can. Now it has brought the Reaper after him,, from the time he sees her he has 13 hours left. But love strikes and she saves him costing her her job and turning it over to her little sister. Now her sister is after him and she must find a legal way to clear him . You will find lots of laughs in the crazy world of a guy who hates because of something in his past that he thinks happened one way and thirty years later has to face what really happened when he was young. But loving a witch seems to be helping him out.

I loved this book so much! I especially loved Arla so much. She is in charge of the reaping duties for the Alcaraz family and it was a rather interesting job. The mix of the Cajun words and some of the myths at the beginning took a bit to get used to but once I was used to it it was really good. I enjoyed the mythology used in this book and how it worked with the plot. Arla has a problem with a certain handsome man who leads ghost tours. Axel has some determination and is definitely starting to cause some problems for the supernatural community and there are some other problems too. I really enjoyed how things progressed and the twists and turns that Arla has to deal with. I also loved Arla’s sister. And of course nothing goes to plan for Arla.

Fun, snarky, playful romance

Although a absolutely loved this book by the end, I will admit the beginning took me awhile to get into. However, stick with it because it will not disappoint you. These two couldn't be more opposite! Arla is a strict magical law enforcer who does lots of research. She's also a strong Reaper with lots of power. She comes from a very respected and well known family. Axel, love the name, is a human. However, he won't leave the supernatural alone. He bothers every species threatening to oust them unless they do as he says. He hates monsters and wants them to bow to him. So how the he'll did these two end up making love? You need to read to find out.

Exaggerated

Imagine a world like that of the movie, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" Zanny, always something going wrong. Caricature characters trying to mix with normal. However, instead of cartoons, it is dramatic versions of supernatural creatures like vampires, witches, and werewolves. Every common trope or feature accentuated. That is the reality of Crescent City.

I was looking for something that took itself more seriously. This was too over the top, along with a rushed pacing that made the main characters come off as dense. Too eager to get to kissing no matter if the current situation, or logical train of thought wasn't the place for it.

If you like wacky passion, with brawn over brains, this is more for you.

Arla (FMC) is a reaping who is tasked with a mission to recover something magical that Axel shouldnt have and then take him out of the equation. Except things dont go exactly to plan and one night together complicates things more for them. That in itself brings out all sorts of Supernaturals to add to the mix. Loved Arla & Axel. They had plenty of steam as well as banter together. It was refreshing to read a book where both characters were in their forties. I cant believe that im writing a review including that but sadly there isnt many books i can recall that ive read with characters over 30. Back to the book and i really enjoyed reading this one. Its a good read

Arla is a witch and has reaper duties that keep peace in New Orleans. Axel is a mortal that is making money by doing ghost tours. When he becomes a problem Arla is sent to deal with him. However things change between them once she gets to know him and it makes her question what she was sent to do. Will she ignore her feelings and do what she was sent to do? What will Axle do once he learns about why she is with him?

This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

New Orleans and the supernatural all stay in hiding away from humans. Arla the Reaper is on a mission to kill Axel that runs a tour business. Arla used magic on him to make him in love with Arla. After several attempts of finding where the mirror is Arla gives up. But Axel wont stop falling head over heels for Arla. As time goes the mirror can't be found. Until the ghost Peirre gave it up and over 200 centuries of missing his love he was able to go and be with her.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC.

When I first started this one, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. I thought it started a bit on the slow side, but I stuck with the book & ended up really enjoying it. I found it refreshing to have main characters in their 40s instead of the young/new adult stories that are all over the place. Jade's characters are greatly written & the story keeps your interest. Another hit from Jade.

I liked that this was about Arla who is a reaper and Axel who is a mortal who does ghost tours and is causing problems. I liked that this was different than I have read before and it kept me interested and wanting to find out what happens next.
I received an ARC and am leaving my honest and voluntary review.

Cute first book

I find favorite series by getting the first one free sometimes I keep buying the rest I would get the next if it was 99 cents but not 3 or 4 dollars per for four more books but you can’t find that next great series unless you try a lot but it was still a good story

When, Arla, a reaper is called on to find a magical relic she is uncertain. Arla is used to her sister, whom she views as more beautiful, being able to seduce and cajole men but never thought herself capable. Axel is a bit of a mess but has more personality and interest than Arla is comfortable with normally. The plan is wonky and both learn more about themselves.

This was an entertaining series opener and I enjoyed both the world building and the characters. Expect to get swept away with action, mystery, magic and an intense chemistry that really leapt off the pages. Good fun!

I loved this book and could not put it down. I felt like I was in New Orleans and the bayous. I laughed at the antics of the characters and was on the edge of my seat to see what would happen next. I cannot wait to see if there will be more set in this world.

Fascinated with this

I like spin on reapers being witches... It's a great twist and I love the romance spin. Time line felt a little off to me. All in all a good read. I give it a solid 4.

another cliff hanger ugh

Why why why. I hate cliffhangers. They are rude and frustrating! I liked the story however, the cliff hanger was a turn off hence the 4 stars until you wrote the story continues!
