హరిజనుల మీద పెత్తనం చెలాయించినంత మాత్రాన, వారి మీద చీటికిమాటికి నోరు పారేసుకున్నంత మాత్రాన తాము పెత్తందార్లయిపోరు. పెత్తందార్ల తొత్తులుగానే మిగిలిపోతారు. తమ ప్రయోజనాలు దెబ్బతినే పరిస్థితి వస్తే తొత్తుల్ని కూడా వెంటాడి వేధిస్తారు అదే పెత్తందార్లు.

బి.సి. కులాల సహాకారం తీసుకుంటునే హరిజనుల్ని అణచివేసే భూస్వామ్యపు అహంకారం, స్వార్థం, కుటిల వ్యూహంలోని ఎత్తుగడలు అర్థమవుతాయి ఈ నవల చదివితే.

ముఖ్యంగా పీడిత కులాల్లోని అంతర్గత వైరుధ్యాల్ని తమ స్వప్రయోజనాలకు అణుగుణంగా రెచ్చగొట్టడమనే పద్ధతి ఈ నాటికీ కొనసాగడం వర్తమాన, సామాజిక, రాజకీయ పరిస్థితుల్ని గమనించిన వారికి తేటతెల్లంగా కనిపిస్తోంది. అందుకే 'స్మశానం దున్నేరు' నవల కేవలం ఒక కథ మాత్రమే కాదు. ఒకనాటి జీవితాన్ని రికార్డు చేసిన నవల మాత్రమే కాదు, దానికి సామాజికపరమైన ప్రాసంగికత వుంది.

About the author

Dr. Kesava Reddy was a renowned Telugu novelist.[1] Hailing from Andhra Pradesh state in India. In his writings, he addresses many of the important social problems in India like poverty, prejudices, and superstitions, and encourages people to be socially responsible. He successfully bridges the idealistic and popular styles of literature.

Kesava Reddy was born in Thalapula Palli, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh to Ranga Reddy P, a farmer. He did his early education at S.V University, Tirupathi. He obtained his MBBS degree from Pondicherry University, and his pg diploma in dermatology in CMC medical college, Vellore. Reddy worked as a medical officer in Victoria Hospital, Dichpally, Nizamabad. He later retired and settled in Nizamabad town.

Although the set-up has deceived me, the book & author didn't.
Quite gripping, enticing and marvellous tale.
I'd just hand it down to Sir Kesava Reddy gaaru as one of the finest authors when comes to remorse, revenge and revolt.
Ah. . the nature in his world. .

For someone as empathetic as me, this book affected me deeply and left me feeling low for a while. It strongly highlights how harsh and unfair society can be. However, this is not a light read. The themes can feel heavy and may not appeal to readers looking for entertainment alone. But for those who enjoy meaningful, reflective literature, this book is definitely worth reading.

It’s not my favourite Keshava reddy book but it is still a very good read. It does talk a lot about caste systems, rich-poor divide very effectively and is very close to reality till date.

I finished reading Smashanam Dunneru by Kesava Reddy and I’m honestly shattered. Like his other novels, this one hits you hard, like a thousand lightning bolts.

At first, the title makes you expect a horror story. A graveyard and the act of ploughing it suggest something eerie. But there are no ghosts or supernatural elements here, and yet it still feels like a horror novel. Because this is the kind of horror Kesava Reddy excels at, the horror of society and human nature. And in many ways, it is far more disturbing than anything supernatural.

The novel shows that injustice does not always come from people above us. Sometimes it comes from those around us, people in the same class as us, those who believe in the system even more fiercely than those above who benefit from it. This idea has echoed throughout history and still holds true. Viktor Frankl writes something similar in his memoir Man’s Search for Meaning, where prisoners often feared certain fellow inmates in positions of power more than the Nazis themselves.

But the novel isn’t without light. Kesava Reddy also shows that among those above us, there are always a few who see the injustice clearly and are willing to stand beside you, even when you are ready to give up on yourself. History gives us such examples too. Oskar Schindler, a German who was not Jewish, risked his life to save hundreds of Jews during the Holocaust.

In the end, a graveyard that begins as a place for the dead becomes a space teeming with life, while a village that was once green turns red. This captures everything the novel wants to convey. Even with all its horrors, mankind can still be humane, if it chooses to be.
