Survival of the fittest becomes harsh reality in the blink of an eye.

Greg Healy isn’t fooled. The hunting trip is merely a ploy contrived by his wife and mother to force Greg and his father to end their estrangement. Not even Greg’s teenage daughter or his father’s hunting buddies along for the ride will be enough of a buffer to heal the rift of long-standing resentments. But the helicopter has barely dropped them in the remote Canadian wilderness when they discover their new equipment is dead with no explanation. Now they’ll have to rely on each other and resort to Old West ingenuity to find their way home—before the hunter becomes the hunted.

For seventeen-year-old Darryl Healy, things aren’t much easier on his grandparents’ cattle ranch. Not when his highly intelligent and successful mother keeps hounding him about college applications. But college quickly loses its allure when the lights go out after a cyberattack. Frightening responsibilities fall squarely on Darryl’s unproven shoulders as a power-hungry politician is determined to confiscate the ranch’s resources—by any means necessary.

Danger and death await the Healy family as each group attempts to navigate this terrifying new post-apocalyptic world while the vast wilderness separates them. When deceit arises from within their ranks, they’ll face threats as lethal as the grizzly bears and mountain lions lurking in the shadows.

And in order to survive the nightmare, a deal with the devil might be their only saving grace.

Grace Hamilton is the prepper pen-name for a bad-ass, survivalist momma-bear of four kids, and wife to a wonderful husband. After being stuck in a mountain cabin for six days following a flash flood, she decided she never wanted to feel so powerless or have to send her kids to bed hungry again. Now she lives the prepper lifestyle and knows that if SHTF or TEOTWAWKI happens, she’ll be ready to help protect and provide for her family.

Combine this survivalist mentality with a vivid imagination (as well as a slightly unhealthy day dreaming habit) and you get a prepper fiction author. Grace spends her days thinking about the worst possible survival situations that a person could be thrown into, then throwing her characters into these nightmares while trying to figure out "What SHOULD you do in this situation?"

It’s her wish that through her characters, you will get to experience what life will be like and essentially learn from their mistakes and experiences.

Good

Good book! It was a different EMP book but nonetheless interesting and entertaining. It
shows the things that a family can accomplish by working as one.

This is book one of the EMP: Return of the Wild West series and sees Greg Healy accompanying his own fairly estranged father Tuck, along with his fourteen year old teenage daughter Emma and two of his father’s supposed hunting friends, Tommy Riedel and Eustace Simpson. Greg is an environmental lawyer and heard from a whistle-blower of some shady dealings that Eustace’s oil pipeline company may have been doing which could have damaged the Canadian wilderness. Greg had come along on this supposed hunting trip to try and find evidence of any damage, the other reason was his mother Marion’s wish for him and his father to get along better and make up their differences. He has left his older son Darryl back at his parent’s farm, with his wife and mother Tabitha. The hunting party were dropped off in the middle of the wilderness by helicopter and got busy setting up camp and Emma was keen to go hunting and try out all of the wilderness stuff she had been researching for the trip.

Meanwhile seventeen year old Darryl is being pushed to complete college work by his engineer mother, when he would prefer to either stay in bed or help out at his grandparent’s farm with the milk cows. When he gets no signal from his mobile phone and his father hasn’t called from his satellite phone to tell his mother they all got there okay, he doesn’t worry too much. The last newscast he heard was talking of a Luddite terrorist organisation called ANPRIM, who distain any technology and want life to be brought back to simpler times when there were no modern devices and life was extremely basic. There was talk of what sort of threat they may become as they were increasing attacks worldwide. When all the power and lights go out in the farmhouse and their farm vehicles stop working, none of them know the real reasons. A town meeting is called by the local mayor, someone his grandmother has an extreme dislike of, but he doesn’t realise why until far too late.

The hunting party spot a large plume of smoke in the distance and Tuck guesses correctly that it is the helicopter. Eustace, Tuck and Greg take a hike to the site to see what has happened, but Tuck has a fall, which brings problems further down the line. When they get back to camp, they have to make the decision to either stay and hunt, hoping a helicopter will still come back for them, or start walking back to civilization themselves, having realised something serious must have taken down the helicopter and that help may not be coming for them. Eustace found a map at the crash site and uses that to locate his company’s pipeline and the possibility of a waystation and an easier route to traverse. Seeing tracks of a large bear brings danger to the group and they realise they may well be the hunted rather than hunters now.

Back at the farm, the mayor’s new and heavy handed manner of controlling the town’s people begins to show some cracks. Darryl believes he is making a deal for the future safety of his grandmother’s health, when he makes a deal with the mayor for some medicine, but soon finds out the mayor and his goons don’t hold up to their end of the deal and they far outnumber him and are heavily armed! Darryl starts stepping up and helping his gran with the farm work, but also on checking up on one of their nearest neighbours who is a disabled vet. He also becomes attracted to the shy neighbouring teen Justine, who they meet on the way into town the first day and who lives with her parents and a younger sister. He is soon going to come to realise that his words are taken a certain way, by the power hungry mayor, who is going to do all he can to gain all the resources the town has to offer, by force, and the farm is a prime target, as well as any families who might have a stockpile of their own supplies.

The hunting party are now on their way back to civilization, but it will not be a simple trek through the barren wilderness, as Eustace is caught out in his company’s pollution of the area, when the group find they cannot drink from some of the water sources and believes Greg is out to get him. Eustace will do whatever he can to make sure Greg and his family cannot witness to the damage caused to the wilderness and matters will soon turn very deadly indeed. Both groups of the Healy family are facing dangers they would never have imagined such a short time ago, and will be sorely tested as they try to stay alive long enough to be reunited. One has a trial as they make their way home and the other has a job of trying to hold onto the very home they hold dear. The event that caused the complete loss of power, has shown some people’s true colours and allowed the violent and power hungry to push weaker people about and take what they want! The world has changed and the survivors will need to change how they deal with all the new challenges they face. An interesting approach of a family split into two locations and both facing life changing and deadly foes. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

First story in a new series written by one of my favorite "end of the world as we know it" authors, Grace Hamilton. Grace has written many series in this genre and all have been excellent reads. AND, none of them repeat a story. They are all original and unique stories that keep readers hooked until the end.
SURVIVE THE FALL has several story lines running at the same time. The main characters are all members of the Healy family. When the EMP strikes, the family is located in two camps.
One group is on a hunting trip where their technology driven gear fails the first day and they find the helicopter they expected to pick them up from camp has crashed so they have no choice but to make their way back to their home base on foot. There are several under currents in this group that will cause tension and danger before they make it home.
The second group is located on the family's ranch where they find their operations endangered at the loss of any powered equipment. They must also protect their home and supplies from those who would take advantage while most of the protectors are hunting.
Grace Hamilton's books make you think about what you'd do if something were to happen and you had to take care of your home and family without modern conveniences. Could you?

This is the first book in this series. The story covers what happens to the Healy family and their neighbors when an emp or something knocks out all the power and electronic devices. Tuck, his estranged son Greg and Greg's daughter Emma are on a camping trip along with Tuck's friend Tommy and Eustace the man who is head of the oil pipeline company whose land they are camping on are trying to make it back home. Darryl, his mother Marion and Greg's mother Tabitha are on the family dairy farm taking care of the usual chores. Filmore the mayer of the closest town decides to take advantage of the situation. This is their story. I liked the characters and the settings which were very believable and relatable. The conversations flowed smoothy and the situations were realistic. There will be more stories coming as it did end with a open possibility that I wouldn't call a cliffhanger as the story did accomplish what the characters were working on. I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

The overall story was fine but the finer details are not there. Lot's of continuity errors including a big one where Greg's father and his wife Marion have scenes where their father is Tuck. For the majority of the book, Tuck is Greg's father but there is a chapter where Marion talks about him as her father - and I don't mean father-in-law but when she was little. Not sure how this got past editors but it's really sloppy. Some of the bad guy scenes where very over the top. And what's up with the American flag starting each chapter but the locations in the books are in Canada?

Characters also aren't well developed - Marion had next to nothing to do other than offer tea to a young girl who had just witnessed her families brutal killing! LOL - really? Tea's gonna make it better!

If you’re looking for a textbook post-apocalyptic EMP novel to read, this is it. The author does a nice job of managing dual plot lines that lead to a final , single confrontation. One plot line involves a daughter, father, grandfather and an oil company executive on a hunting trip in the Canadian wilderness. The other plot line is the son, his mother and grandmother left alone at the family farm to defend against predators, both animal and human. Realistic and scary, this story portrays ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances.

The start of what promises to be another post-apocalyptic series from this author. I love the world building that she does, it’s so easy to visualize the scenes as well as the characters. This first book has numerous characters in the same family in different locations and dealing with different situations as the world goes dark. The dialogue between the characters is believable. I am eagerly awaiting book 2 in this series.

If you are a fan of Post Apocalyptic books you cannot go wrong with anything Grace Hamilton writes. If you are not a fan of that type of book already then maybe start with this one. The first in a new series by an author who really knows how to pull you in and keep you reading. Multiple story lines going on at once that all come together well in the end.

Interesting

A nice beginning to a survival series. Greed is the ugly reason behind much of the evil in the world and this story plays on as it unfolds.

This is a post-apocalyptic story focused on one family in two locations.

Greg has agreed to go on a hunting trip with his father, Tuck, whom Greg tends to avoid due to their pattern of arguing. Greg is surprised by his teenage daughter’s enthusiasm for the trip. Emma is excited and has been studying to prepare to show her father and grandfather that she can be trusted in this environment. There are two other men along for the trip: Tuck’s best friend, Tommy, a rugged fellow, and Eustace, the brawny foreman of the pipeline company who is to serve as guide on the company land.

Greg is distressed when his satellite phone doesn’t work and the hunters soon realize none of their electronic equipment is working. When they see a fire in the distance three of the men make the hike to discover that the helicopter that dropped them off has crashed. Finally, they are realizing that something is very wrong and they are apparently stranded with minimal supplies and limited hope of rescue. As they agree to trek their way down the pipeline it is clear that there are secrets and hidden tensions that threaten the group as much as the stark wilderness with snakes and bears.

Meanwhile, back home, Greg’s son, Darryl, is struggling to complete his college applications while trying to help his grandmother and mother run the family ranch. When the power failed, none of the ranch hands showed up for work. Since the mechanical equipment isn’t working, the cows have to be milked by hand. Fences have to be repaired to control the herd and soon they realize that the fences need to be turned into a wall to protect against predators - wild animals and human thieves. Will these three be able to help their neighbors and protect their property against the powers in the local town who seek to take their resources, even at gunpoint?

I found this to be a fairly predictable EMP power loss, post-apocalyptic story. The author has presented dual, well-constructed plotlines with flawed – very human – characters. The story reads easily but I was disappointed by what I will call a lack of energy. The two threads of the story are adequately written technically and have some danger and intrigue. Still, both experiences seemed depressed to me. The story ends with a shoot-out and a trailing enemy who will no doubt make trouble in the next book.

It may just be that I wasn’t particularly gripped by any of the characters. I will recommend the book to fans of the post-apocalyptic genre, and there are plenty of five-star reviews to encourage them to read this..

A camping/hunting trip into Canada’s Northwest Territories turns into a nightmare. Greg Healy, his father Tuck, his daughter Emma, along with two of his hunting friends Tommy and Eustace, helicopter into the Canadian Wilderness on a hunting trip. Greg, an environmental lawyer, had another covert reason for the trip. The trip turns sour when what appears to be an EMP shuts down all their technology. Encountering a grumpy bear adds to their dismay. Following a pipeline to a weigh station brings hope but once again, the situation goes bad. Once again, they head out for home. Will they all make it? Back at Greg’s parent’s home; a ranch in northwestern Washington State near Ferndale, the situation for Greg’s mother Marion, his wife Tabitha, and his son Darryl, is not much better. They have to deal with a small community on the verge of panic, and a psychotic Mayor Filmore who has decided to take over, collecting all supplies by any means necessary. Will they survive the Mayor’s scheme? The story is interesting, with a great cast of characters, authentic circumstances, with tension and events that keep you listening. I enjoyed this first volume of a new series and look forward to the next book. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This book has a great post apocalyptic story-line. The characters and world-building is very believable and relatable. The interactions between characters flow smoothly and the situations feel realistic in this setting. I lovecthe ability to continue on to other books because the ending is open-ended but nit with any major cliff hangers. I enjoyed the book i and would recommend it.

An EMP strike, possibly from a radical group similar to Antifa but a lot smarter. Highly technical. People in this small town are led by an evil, pompous mayor who will resort to murder to accomplish his goals. An oil company executive who will also resort to murder to hide his underhanded bribes which make make money and pollute the environment. This all leads to an outstanding story of justice and survival. A realistic scenario and and outstanding read!!

I’m never disappointed in anything Grace puts out! She is amazing and all of her stories and characters are believable. Some are also relatable while others are loathsome. She never fails to pull on your emotions.
The kids are my favorite part of this story. I love them. Such strong and capable kids!
Narration by Andrew Tell was perfect as alway!

Good dystopian disaster

Survive the Fall is an apoc/dystopian tale one family’s struggles and violence they encounter. I like the primary characters and there’s plenty of action and drama.

I won’t be reading the next book in this series because I have a conviction about using my Lord’s name in vain and book 1 does that.

I’m not sure of where I got this from but, it was probably BookFunnel. This is my honest opinion.

The author draws you into the story of a family trying to survive a worldwide calamity. I started the book one morning and finished it the next afternoon. I have read several books from Grace Hamilton, and she does a fine job of telling the story of a family/individual going through a crisis who are good people and having to fight off that 10% of people that would take advantage of the crisis to harm others.
